Acorns, Hazelnuts & Fire: A Conversation with Elspeth Hay, Ron Reed, Joanna Brooks & Gale Pettifer

In this episode, we are uplifting some of the ideas in Elspeth Hay's remarkable book,   Feed Us with Trees: Nuts and the Future of Food.  After starting with Sara Jolena offering a summary of some of the big ideas in the book, we move into a conversation with author Elspeth Hay and a few of the many people whom Elspeth has mentioned in the book: Ron Reed, Karuk tribal member and cultural biologist; Joanna Brooks, settler scholar and author of Why We Left; and Gale Pettifer, commoner and scholar of the New Forest in England. Together they trace a set of histories that turn out to be deeply entangled: Indigenous land dispossession in California, the enclosure of the English commons, the suppression of cultural burning, the erasure of ancestral foodways — and the folk songs, forest laws, and buried memories that survived all of it. Timestamps0:00  —  Welcome & introduction: Sara Jolena introduces the episode, inspired by Elspeth Hay's book Feed Us with Trees, and the “no farm, no food” myth it challenges.2:51  —  Guest introductions: Elspeth introduces Ron Reed (Karuk Nation, cultural biologist), Joanna Brooks (Why We Left), and Gale Pettifer (New Forest commoner and commons scholar).5:44  —  Ron Reed's opening story: childhood memories of harvesting acorns, mushrooms, and salmon; the Klamath Dam removal; and the ongoing fight to restore Indigenous fire practices with public trust objectives.9:20  —  Gale Pettifer on the New Forest: a thousand years of contested common rights, Norman forest law, and what it means to still practice ancient commoning in the 21st century.12:58  —  Joanna Brooks on settler scholarship and song: tracing her European ancestry through folk ballads, a grandmother's lullaby, and a plate of hazelnuts at the British Museum that the curators couldn't explain.18:29  —  Fire across continents: Elspeth connects her experience of gorse burning debates in the New Forest to Ron's work on cultural burning — the same argument, on opposite sides of the Atlantic.30:58  —  Dragons, sacred fire, and colonial memory: a discussion of how fire moved from sacred to feared in Anglo-Saxon and English tradition, illustrated by the New Forest dragon legend and the introduction of Christianity.34:31  —  Songs of grief and displacement: Joanna traces the emotional record of enclosure through English murder ballads — songs about hazel trees, beaver hats, and families starving off the land — and what they reveal about why colonial settlers “lost their minds.”43:12  —  Magna Carta, common law, and the 1877 New Forest Act: Gale traces how brutal Norman forest law paradoxically became the foundation of commoners' rights, and how public outcry saved the New Forest from privatization.47:33  —  The allotment parallel: Elspeth draws a striking connection between English allotment gardens and the U.S. federal allotment system used to break up Indigenous tribal lands — the same word, the same colonial logic, on both sides of the ocean.1:10:42  —  Cycles of colonization and reverse transmission: Sara Jolena traces how colonial practices — from plantation timekeeping to fire suppression — were exported back to Europe, and the importance of distinguishing imperial forces from common people's forces within every culture.1:16:11  —  Closing round: guests share what is shifting now — prescribed fire training in Wellfleet, MA; intergenerational transfer of fire ecology knowledge; the joy of reconnecting with the New Forest through free-roaming ponies — and an invitation to listeners to bring these ideas into their communities.Elspeth HayBook: Feed us with treesWebsiteBioInstaRon ReedArticle about Ron Reed - How Karuk ceremonial leader Ron Reed used Western science to take down the Klamath damsInterview featuring Ron - Fire is Food: A Virtual Brown Bag Discussion with Ron Reed and Kari NorgaardJoanna BrooksBook: Why We Left WebsiteBioLinkedinGale Pettifer LinkedinBioSend us a messageSupport the showLearn more about Sara Jolena Wolcott and Sequoia SamanvayaMusic Title: Both of UsMusic by: madiRFAN Don't forget to "like" and share this episode!

This week we attended the most incredible party thrown for @onthescentmedia byGlorious Brands and Muse Communications - a room filled with friends: movers andshakers of the scent scene, from press, PR and brands alike. All were there tocelebrate the official launch of On The Scent Magazine - and somehow, with all theirlove and support - it suddenly felt real! The magazine was arrayed on tables around the gorgeously flower-bedecked room,Mimosa cocktails were sipped, fragrant friends laughed and we all basked in themost spectacular view of London, delighting in the golden hour (and a rareopportunity to come together across various companies who are usually the onesholding launches, not getting to relax and attend them!) It was just JOYOUS, andwe are so grateful to everyone who helped organise it, and who came together insuch scented harmony.Ahhhh! Bliss. After reliving the magic of that night, we are excitedly counting the hours until theFragrance Foundation Jasmine Awards (the podcast is nominated for three awardsin Best Audio and Best Visual categories this year, while Suzy is up for anotherthree for her writing!)Meanwhile, of course we had to continue our in-depth chat about#whatwearewearing lately (because there's a LOT to tell you about…)Nicola: Guerlain Cuir Beluga‘Typically tough, the leather accord reveals a new facet here. Gracing the skin withsoftness and enhanced by a refreshing tangerine accord, leather becomes suppleand luminous, blending with intriguing immortelle notes before melting into avelvety lingering trail of amber, musk and vanilla notes. An untameable leather, assupple as white suede.'Suzy: Amouage Love HibiscusBy Jérôme Epinet‘From the moment it begins, Love Hibiscus ingeniously presents both of its mainfacetsat the same time: a hibiscus note – tart, berry-like, and herbaceous - and anappetising sugar-coated Palmier accord - sweet, buttery, and caramelised. Linkingthem together, with their citrusy, woody aspects, are a delicious passion fruit and agenerous proportion of frankincense. Finally, sandalwood, Indian papyrus, andvanilla bring the depth that renders the whole perfume indulgent and sensuous.'Nicola: M&S Discover Warm Neroli‘This 50ml eau de parfum from Discover combines sparkling neroli and bergamottop notes with a soft musk base for an elegant, long-lasting fragrance. The carefullydeveloped formula creates a distinctive scented profile that transitions beautifullyfrom day to night. The sleek bottle design ensures easy application, while theconcentrated parfum formula provides all-day wear without the need for frequentreapplication. Perfect for adding an elegant touch to your perfume collection. From sweet, fruity notes to spicy ambers, experimentation is a key part of findingthe fragrance that suits you. ʽDiscoverʼ offers you a variety of scents mapped acrossthe fragrance families for you to explore and find your perfect scent.'Suzy: Balmain Destin (from £25)By Quentin Bisch‘An uplifting, feminine blend of strawberry, peony, and creamy sandalwood notes. The bold and feminine fragrance embodies Balmain's savoir-faire and modern pulse. It opens with a flash of neon-saturated, ripe strawberry. The vibrant fruit sparks ajoyful, optimistic energy, playfully contrasting the spicy pepper notes of baies rose.Rosy notes of peony reveal unexpected creamy lychee facets. The fragrance'sfloralcy deepens with a lily accord. Its delicate green note and the intense spice ofakigalawood come together, intermingling with a sandalwood accord and smoothpatchouli for a radiant woody effect. The brilliant, musky second-skin scent ofAmbrexolide grounds the composition in an irresistible, and unforgettable, sensualwarmth.'Nicola: Aime Parfum de Peau (from The French Pharmacy)‘Creamy santal mixes with white musk and ambroxan – a renewable molecule withwoody, amber notes that assists in extending the perfume's scent profile. With aroll-on application based on jojoba oil, Parfum de Peau inspires an intimate gestureof loving self-care. How to use: Apply a small amount of Parfum de Peau to pulse-points on the body, allowing for development of the scent with your own naturalchemistry – on wrists, inner arms, the neckline and just behind the ears.'Suzy: RNDL Circus‘Life never stands still. It twists and turns, dazzles and delights. Circus embracesthe spectacle. Vibrant, unexpected, and a little bit crazy, yet always in control. Forthe days that feel like a performance and the nights you steal the spotlight. Createdalongside Mathieu Maneuvrier, one of the most talented perfumers working today.Top notes: peach, cherry, strawberry.Heart notes: tobacco, maté, smoke, Greek saffron.Base notes: musk, amber, gourmand, cypress, cedarwood.'Nicola: Nuxe Huile prodigieuse® Multi-Purpose Dry Oil‘The irresistible scent of sunshine and warm sand of this oil with an inimitable drytouch will infuse your skin with radiant sensuality. Itsaddictive scent of Magnolia, Orange Blossom and Vanilla and unique dry oil texturepromise a truly Prodigious experience.Suzy: Miller Harris Tea Tonique extrait‘Tea Tonique Extrait pays homage to the olfactive artistry of the original eau deparfum, amplifying its beloved character into a richer, more immersive expression.A study of infusion and tea in its many guises, dis1lled for longer and drawn deeper, where brightness is intensified and lightness gains textured depth. Time andpatience allow each note to unfold slowly and completely. The fragrance opens with the unmistakable sparkle of Calabrian bergamot but here, the rind of the fruit heightened. The citrus oil feels more vivid, more tactile, asthough the peel itself has been pressed between fingertips. As the citrus radianceexpands, a softer dimension begins to unfurl. Peach blossom reveals, supple andskin-like, like ripe peach warmed by the sun: luminous, velvety, quietly addictive.Cool and sweet nutmeg threads through the fragrance with amplified presence, itsspice drawn out and lingering longer on skin.At the heart remains the clarity of freshly brewed tea, while mate takes on a moreinvigorating intensity. Jasmine and a whisper of violet lend a delicate, powderyelegance that softens the composition without dimming its light. As the fragrancesettles, light woods, smoky birch and comforting musk anchor the radiance, evoking the earth beneath the tea bushes and grounding the freshness…'

Audiovisual ➡️ fanlink.tv/Y0UTUBE Tracklisting ➡️ soon.. Warm, smooth, and slightly unexpected — Mathilde Nordberg's 'Frangelico Sour 'sets the mood for this episode. Hazelnut liqueur meets fresh lemon and lime, shaken to a creamy foam that balances sweetness with sharp citrus bite. It's round, nutty, and refreshing at once, a refined twist on a classic sour. That layered elegance mirrors Mathilde's sound: intimate yet vibrant, soft in texture but grounded in groove. Moving between Melodic and Afro House, Mathilde blends organic depth with club-ready energy. As a producer, songwriter, and DJ, she records her own cello, piano, and vocal samples, weaving acoustic warmth into electronic precision. Released on labels like Unreleased Records, Ki Records, and Didschn, her music carries analog soul with modern drive. This mix flows just like the cocktail: smooth at first sip, then alive with subtle tension and lift. Grooving, emotive, and effortlessly moving, it features many of Mathilde's own productions, offering a deep dive into her signature sound. Microcosmos Records presents Flying Carpet, the third studio album from German duo Grasz & Schultz. Founded in 2019 by Jule Grasz and Hans Schultz, the project draws on over three decades of combined experience in ambient, chillout, techno, and psybient. Psybient grooves meet guitar-driven melodies, keyboard melodies and bubbling synth textures. The tracks are danceable yet relaxed, each distinct in character but unified by mood and flow — perfect for movement, travel, and deep listening. The Animal Rescue Podcast: what you always wanted to know but didn’t know who to ask

This week I talk with Adam Spencer, founder of Furlanthropy, who went from being afraid of dogs to creating the first charity-owned crowdfunding platform for animal welfare after adopting Hazelnut, a rescue dog whose original family surrendered her due to their inability to afford Parvo treatment. Discovering that two-thirds of pet euthanasia in America occurs due to financial constraints, Adam developed a crowdfunding platform that sends funds directly to veterinarians (often within 48 hours for emergencies), provides donation receipts for all donations, accepts various payment methods including stocks and donor-advised funds, and charges only 8% in fees versus the 15% typical with for-profit platforms. The platform has helped pets in nearly every US state and is working on expanding internationally. And they don't just focus on vet bills, rather they support most animal-related causes. The story of the Bell Witch stands as America's most vicious haunting—a tale so disturbing it's hard to believe it happened at all. Long before ghost hunting apps and night vision cameras, this malevolent spirit terrorized a frontier family with shocking physical power and psychological cruelty. When respected farmer John Bell spotted a strange creature in his Tennessee cornfield in 1817, he couldn't have imagined it would lead to years of torment. What began as mysterious knocking quickly escalated into something unprecedented—an entity that could speak, recite scripture, and physically attack both family members and visitors. The Bells' teenage daughter Betsy endured the worst—being pinched, slapped, and having her hair pulled until she broke off her engagement, seemingly the entity's goal all along. What makes this case extraordinary isn't just the physical phenomena but the intelligence behind it. "Kate," as the entity called herself, displayed preferences and vendettas. She tormented John Bell relentlessly while showing kindness only to his wife Lucy. She quoted Bible passages that stumped ministers and revealed private secrets that sent visitors fleeing. Even future President Andrew Jackson allegedly encountered her power when his wagon wheels mysteriously locked on approach to the Bell property. After witnessing his men being tormented, Jackson reportedly declared he'd "rather fight the British than the Bell Witch."The haunting culminated with John Bell's death in 1820, when a mysterious black liquid appeared in the medicine cabinet—liquid that killed a cat instantly when tested. As mourners gathered for Bell's funeral, Kate's mocking laughter echoed through the cemetery, a final act of cruelty that cemented this case as uniquely malevolent. Whether demonic entity, vengeful spirit, or something else entirely, the Bell Witch remains paranormal history's most compelling mystery. Next time you hear knocking at night, remember—it could be more than just the wind.Thank you for listening to the Paranormal Peeps Podcast. Not many bands make it 30+ years. Fewer still with the same five members. But here we are with Jett Beres, the bassist with Sister Hazel, who will be headlining Bands in the Sand on June 14th. Jett hopped on the phone with us this afternoon to talk about the upcoming show, and we covered a lot of ground, notably the band's penchant for playing for a good cause like the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. In fact, their name comes from Sister Hazel, a nun who gave her blessing, provided they do good! But how does a band stay together 30+ years with the same five members? How have they been able to release an album every two years? What are their Hazelnuts looking for when they come to a show? What should we look for on June 14th? Find out all that and more, and eavesdrop on our conversation. Listen to the dumbest question I have ever asked. And if you are going to be at Bands in the Sand--Jett offers a warning about trying to jump up on the stage! Have a listen! Beaked hazelnuts are a wild food native to North America. Indigenous peoples in British Columbia have passed down stories of these hazelnuts as a vital food source their ancestors planted and cultivated. These stories motivated Chelsea Geralda Armstrong of Simon Fraser University to look more deeply at the genetics of the beaked hazelnut and determine just how widely it was cultivated. Indigenous rights attorney Jack Woodward hopes research like this can make a difference in the Land Back movement, providing evidence that land once considered wilderness by European settler colonists was actually being carefully managed by tribes.Another science story in the news catch your eye?
