In this episode of the Dover Download podcast, Deputy City Manager Christopher Parker chats with Christine Sieks and Doug Glennon about holiday festivities and downtown Dover activities. Glennon discusses Communitively's initiatives, including First Friday Shop Local events, the Holiday Stroll featuring hot cocoa and s'mores stations in Waldron Court, Plaid Friday promotions encouraging shopping at local businesses rather than big box retailers, and the Autumn Art Amble, organized by Susan Hanna. Sieks explains the Light Up Dover project, formed by 14 volunteers when the previous organization could no longer continue. The initiative focuses on three main goals: lighting the tops of downtown buildings, creating a mural on the old Earcraft building, and dramatically enhancing the community Christmas tree. The tree lighting is scheduled for Dec. 5, with 40 boxes of ornaments and hundreds of lights. Both guests emphasize the growing collaboration among various Dover organizations including Dover Main Street, the Arts Commission, Dover Doers, and the Holiday Parade organizers. They highlight how different groups are learning to work together rather than separately, pooling resources and coordinating efforts for greater community impact during the 2025 holiday season and planning ahead for 2026.In This Week in Dover History, we learn about Thanksgiving week in 1925, when Dover residents enjoyed holiday dining at establishments like the Magnet Restaurant and Kimball Tavern, entertainment at the Strand and Orpheum theaters, and Ethel Mae Shorey's 10th annual Thanksgiving performance at the Dover Opera House.
In Episode 89, we're back with our 5 Fun Things series! After a very busy stretch at Rhythm and Confetti, we're excited to reconnect and share what we've been up to. Here are 5 Fun Fall Festivities we've been up to at Rhythm since our last episode!1. Year-End Show Reveal Our annual Reveal continues to be one of the most anticipated events of the entire season. With a large graduating class and a need for lots of character opportunities, we built four days of clues leading up to the announcement. The reveal of The Greatest Rhythm Show: A Sparktacular Circus Spectacle—our circus-inspired spin on The Greatest Showman—generated huge buzz in the studio and online. Immediately afterward, we decorated our Fun Wall with themed banners and balloons, which became a favorite photo spot throughout the fall.2. Fun at the Fair with Senior Edge Company To celebrate the new show theme and give our seniors a night out, we headed to the North Georgia State Fair. The dancers arrived in Circus-inspired looks (with grads dressed as their individual show characters), and the bright fairgrounds provided the perfect backdrop for fun and colorful photos we'll use throughout the season. We created a scavenger hunt, divided them into teams, and sent them off to complete creative tasks—from snapping cotton candy pics to teaching dance moves to strangers. At the end of the night, dancers filled out a form with personalized compliments for each teammate. We compiled the messages into keepsake prints featuring a photo and all the notes from their peers.3. Year-End Show Retreat Our annual retreat remains a cornerstone of our season. We rented a peaceful Airbnb south of Atlanta to focus on planning the entire show—concepts, music, edits, costumes, costume orders, emails, dress rehearsal schedules, and more. The setting allowed for fresh air, walks, porch time, and the kind of creative space that makes the workload manageable. It was packed with productivity, but also with fun, food, and a little college football in the background.4. Halloweek at Rhythm Halloweek is always a fall favorite. Dancers dress up all week long, and our faculty goes all-in with coordinated costumes for a themed photo and video shoot scheduled during a staff meeting. This year, even with a circus theme in play, K-Pop Demon Hunter–inspired costumes absolutely dominated. Our adult classes also delivered full-out, spooky, highly produced videos with elaborate staging and costumes. Their commitment grows every year and the results are always a highlight!5. Raise the Roof and Hammer Out Hunger With construction still underway on our new studios, we leaned into a building theme for our fall community outreach. We launched a food drive benefiting MUST Ministries, and our Rhythm families responded with incredible generosity. A friendly competition between companies added extra excitement, with the winning group earning a pizza party. Next month we'll shift from food to warm clothing, collecting coats and winter wear for local schools. We always look forward to giving back to our community! That's our fall recap. If you'd like us to dive deeper into any of these topics, reach out by DM or email. And be sure to join us next time—we're heading into Camp Confetti reveal season, and we can't wait to share what's coming for summer!Let's Get Social! Santa Claus is getting ready to return to Haverhill later this month and bringing along some friends from the “Island of Misfit Toys,” the theme of the 61st Annual VFW Santa Parade.During an appearance on WHAV's morning show, parade Chairman Daniel Plourde discussed the theme, taken from the 1964 television special, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”“Yeah, the parade is coming up. It's on the 23rd of November, Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock. We leave from the Bradford Fire Station promptly at 1 and we go down Main Street, cross over the Merrimack River, turn left on Merrimack, turn right at the post office and end at the Boys and Girls Club at the corner of Emerson,” Plourde said.Planning for the parade started in May and it costs about $50,000 to mount the parade each year—all covered by donations from both corporate sponsors and individual donors. Expenses include hiring the marching bands and other acts. More than 50 entries from high school marching bands across the region, floats from local organizations, antique cars and other performers will pass down the parade route, Plourde said.“We're doing very well so far. We have 20 plus floats, over 20 marching groups and about a dozen high school marching bands and other performing acts. So, we are in pretty good shape so far but there is always room for more,” Plourde said.Floats and marching units set up at the Caleb Dustin Hunking School behind the Bradford Fire Station on the morning of the parade and are judged. Prizes are given in five categories, including Most Parade Spirit and Best Overall Float, Plourde said.“Especially this year with it being the ‘Island of Misfit Toys,' I expect to see some very creative things going down the street this year. It should be very entertaining,” Plourde said, noting this year's theme is apt because the misfit toys debut as part of the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer animated movie which was released in 1964, the same year the Haverhill Santa Parade was launched.Plourde said he expects every inch of space along the entire route will be filled with parade goers.“Everyone has their favorite spots that some of them have been sitting in for generations. It's always very entertaining for me to drive down Main Street the morning before the parade and see the chairs lined up marking territory,” Plourde said. Some 50 people have volunteered as parade ambassadors and will be on hand dressed in red coats to assist on the day of the parade. The parade committee will also have its own float to collect donations. Those who wish to contribute before parade day may made donations at HaverhillSantaParade.com.The parade was established by the late John T. Sullivan when he was commander of Haverhill's VFW Lorraine Post 29. In addition to Plourde, other members of this year's parade committee are Sullivan's son, Thomas J. Sullivan, who serves as vice chair; Jessica Plourde, secretary; and Heather Powers, treasurer.Support the show

OSF Saint Luke Medical Center in Kewanee is inviting animal lovers to their annual "Blessing of Pets" event on October 8th. GDP Script/ Top Stories for September 27th Publish Date: September 27th PRE-ROLL: From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Saturday, September 27th and Happy Birthday to Meatloaf I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by Gwinnett KIA Mall of Georgia. It's Back — Magical Nights of Lights returns to Lanier Islands Magazine still rates Georgia No. 1 for business Three of Georgia’s top higher education institutions retain high rankings All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: 07.14.22 KIA MOG STORY 1: It's Back — Magical Nights of Lights returns to Lanier Islands After a five-year break, one of Georgia’s most cherished holiday traditions is finally back. Lanier Islands Resort announced Thursday that Magical Nights of Lights will return for the 2025 holiday season, promising a reimagined experience that’s bigger, brighter, and, well, just plain magical. From Nov. 15 to Jan. 4, 2026, the lakeside resort will transform into a glowing wonderland. Picture this: miles of twinkling lights, animated displays, and Christmas carols playing through your car radio. Classic favorites like Candy Cane Lane and the 12 Days of Christmas are back, but there’s new fun too—Pickleball Elves, anyone? The tour ends with two festive stops: Holiday Headquarters (think mulled wine, s’mores, and axe throwing) and License to Chill Snow Island, complete with snow tubing and ice skating. Tickets start at $25 per car, and overnight guests get a free light tour. STORY 2: Magazine still rates Georgia No. 1 for business For the 12th year running, Georgia has snagged the top spot on Area Development Magazine’s list of best states for doing business. A dozen years—pretty impressive, right? The magazine pointed to affordable housing, reliable child care, and solid transportation as key reasons for the streak. Southern states dominated the rankings, with Georgia leading the pack, followed by South Carolina, Texas, and North Carolina. Gov. Brian Kemp credited the win to teamwork between state leaders and local communities, while the Georgia Chamber of Commerce called the state the “economic envy of the nation.” But the game is changing. Tax breaks and cheap land aren’t enough anymore. Companies are eyeing climate risks, water access, and long-term resilience. Georgia, the magazine noted, is already ahead in those areas. It’s not just about business—it’s about building a place where people want to live, work, and stay. STORY 3: Three of Georgia’s top higher education institutions retain high rankings Georgia’s top universities are holding their own in the 2026 U.S. News rankings, with all three—Georgia Tech, UGA, and Emory—landing in the top 100. Tech climbed to 32nd, tied with NYU and two California public schools. UGA stayed steady at 46th, sharing the spot with four others. Emory? Sitting pretty at 24th, right alongside Georgetown. The rankings factor in everything from graduation rates to faculty pay to post-grad earnings. And in specific fields? Georgia schools shine. Emory’s nursing program is second only to Duke. Tech’s environmental and industrial programs are No. 1, and UGA’s insurance program? Best in the nation. For in-state students, Tech and UGA are a steal at just over $10,000 a year. Out-of-state? Triple that. Emory, though, comes with a hefty $70,000 price tag. Worth it? Depends who you ask. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: CITY OF SUGAR HILL STORY 4: Police: Woman stabbed to death at home near Stone Mountain Gwinnett County police are investigating after a woman was fatally stabbed Thursday in what appears to be a domestic violence case. Officers responded to a call around 4:30 p.m. about a person down at a home on Deshong Drive, near the Gwinnett-DeKalb County line. Inside, they found a woman who had died from stab wounds. A female relative was detained elsewhere in Gwinnett, and detectives are questioning her. The victim’s name hasn’t been released yet, pending notification of her family. Anyone with information can contact detectives or Crime Stoppers for a possible cash reward. STORY 5: Housing Matters: Conversion of extended-stay hotel to affordable housing to begin soon A vacant Extended Stay America off Jimmy Carter Boulevard is getting a second life. Starting in December, it’ll be transformed into affordable housing for seniors, homeless youth, and young adults aging out of foster care. Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett Housing Corporation bought the property in February for $14.5 million, using funds from the Affordable Housing Development Fund and the American Rescue Plan. Units will be for single or double occupancy, with rents about $500 below market. Leasing starts in 2026. Break 3: STORY 6: Duluth Fall Festival returns this weekend The 42nd Duluth Fall Festival is back this weekend, and it’s pulling out all the stops—over 180 arts and crafts vendors, 40+ food booths, and nearly two dozen performers spread across two stages. It’s a lot. Festivities kick off Saturday at 10 a.m. with the parade, which some say is the biggest in Gwinnett. After that? The opening ceremony at the Festival Center Amphitheater, followed by nonstop entertainment on the Festival Center and Parsons Alley stages. Sunday starts early with the Donut Dash 5K at 8 a.m. and a church service at 10 a.m. Parking? It’s tight. Use the free shuttles from local schools. And leave the pets at home—it’s hot, crowded, and not ideal for furry friends. Proceeds go straight back into the community, funding everything from downtown beautification to nonprofits like Rainbow Village and Spectrum Autism Center. Details at duluthfallfestival.org. STORY 7: FAFSA application now open for current and future GGC students For Georgia Gwinnett College students, the road to scholarships, grants, and financial aid starts now—FAFSA for the 2026–2027 school year is officially open. FAFSA isn’t just a form; it’s the key to federal grants, work-study gigs, and loans. Plus, state and school aid programs use it to figure out who qualifies for what. The earlier you file, the better your chances of snagging the most aid. Need help? The Grizzly Welcome Center (Building D) is open weekdays to guide students through the process. Pro tip: File ASAP. We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: Ingles Markets 5 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. This week, I'm diving into all the cozy vibes that make fall so special—creating new traditions like apple picking with family and friends, and whipping up comforting recipes like Marry Me Chicken Orzo, Creamy Chicken Gnocchi Soup, and big pots of Chili for these upcoming rainy evenings. Plus, a sprinkle of Italian flair from shows I'm currently streaming that's shaping my fall seasonal cooking. Currently, I'm working on the balancing act of being present with a partner who doesn't love constant content creation (yes, the compromise between one cute photo vs. capturing the whole day). Join me as we lean into cozy kitchen recipes, family traditions, and the joy of savoring autumn together. Festivities are held in the historic Westside neighborhood, home to many of Kansas City's Latinx residents. It began in the classrooms of the Mattie Rhodes Art Center where children worked on Dia de los Muertos themed projects after school. It was in one of those classrooms that Richard Bay, a local artist and art educator in the Kansas City Public School District, held a discussion night about the holiday where an impressive crowd gathered to learn about its traditional practices. The people's interest was apparent, as was the need for more space, and thus a gallery was opened next door in order to foster a space for cultural and artistic education. Since then Mattie Rhodes Center has dedicated itself to this idea and hosts a variety of events during Dia de los Muertos, including an altar exhibition made for and by members of the community, cultural workshops and tours, and related celebrations in the streets of the Westside. Altogether, we hope to create an experience that is similar to and honors the traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. We cherish the connections and collaborations we have made through this event with our community members as well as valued institutions around the city such as the Kansas City Museum in the Northeast, Stonelion Puppets Theater, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The holiday of Dia de los Muertos varies from place to place, from person to person. The holiday originates in Mexico, though it is celebrated in many other countries in different forms. Dia de los Muertos embodies themes from both All Saints and All Souls Day (Catholic holidays) and those of the Aztecs and the Mayans. The culminations of these many beliefs focus on families reflecting upon those who have passed and rejoice in the happiness they once shared. Even though families are saddened by a loved one's departure, they do not cry on the Day of the Dead. The elders say the road back to the world of the living must not be made slippery by tears. El Dia de Los Muertos evokes happy and sad emotions, but it is always a celebration that unites the living the dead together for a short time. The holiday can be seen as practice in which we laugh at death, we triumph over it by celebrating life. While Halloween focuses on scary images of monsters, witches and other frights, the Day of the Dead displays a strong sense of respect and love for family, ancestry, and community. Death is a natural part of life, and this holiday allows people to talk and laugh about death and lose some of their fear. Although traditionally Dia de Los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, many people celebrate the days of the dead from October 18th through November 9th, with each day dedicated to different groups of souls, also including a thirteen day feast. For this celebration of life and death, ofrendas (altars) are constructed for those who have passed and people tell stories and reflect on the good times they all once shared. There are many standards for the creation of the altars. Specific items are called for, the inclusion of the four elements (earth, wind, fire, and water), a towel and bowl of water, a cushion or chair, photographs, candles, flowers, personal items and even food. Our exhibit of altars and artwork displays and explains these aspects and brings others to the surface. Some work portrays the traditional aspects of the day of the dead, while others reflect contemporary views that push the principles of ofrendas. They also present many different views to the public, some dedicated to family and others purely aesthetic. The artwork of various local artists on the walls stirs up the celebration and positive energy that the holiday exudes. The fiestas take you right to the heart of Mexico with the parade, performers, live music, food, activities, marketplace, and art that involve the entire community. The workshops teach you how to decorate and prepare for the festivities, and the slide presentation shows you first hand accounts of the holiday in Mexico. Overall, we bring you many ways to learn, understand, experience and celebrate this wonderful and uplifting Mexican holiday. Traditional Mexican Calendar: Many people witness the holiday of Dia de los Muertos on November 1st and 2nd, All Saints and All Souls Days. In some areas of Mexico the holiday begins as early as October 18th and lasts through November 9th. Although the days change from place to place and family to family, the basic festivities remain the same. Below is a calendar of the Days of the Dead from many areas in Mexico. October 25th- The Feast of the Holy Souls. This is the beginning of a 13-day feast of the dead for the Tzeltals of Mexico. Here graves are decorated with pine needles and tusus (yellow wildflowers). October 27th- The souls of those who have no living family members are offered breads and water from jugs on this day. October 28th- On this day the accidentados return (the souls of those who died in accidents). This is also the day for the souls who have caused great harm or murder to return. They are also offered jugs of water and breads. These souls are un-forgiven for their acts, so their offerings are placed outside the houses or in the corner of a church. October 30th- The unbaptized souls return on this day. The children who visit on this day are known as Los Ninos Limbos (children who died before baptism). October 31st- Angelitos (the souls of children) show up on this day and must return to the land of the dead by afternoon of the following day. Toys and candy are left for them. November 1st- The souls of the dead adults return today. Cigars, cigarettes, alcohol and liquor is left out for the adults only on this day. The adults may remain until the next day. Many families spend the night in the cemetery to spend time with them. This day is known as All Saints Day, a Catholic festival day. Someone is called to ring a bell through town or in the church to summon the souls of the adults. November 2nd- Known as All Souls Day, another Catholic festival day. This day focuses on the living assisting the dead in their move into Heaven. This is usually the last day of celebration and includes the largest fiestas. By the end of the day, all the souls must leave, and to help them along, the mummers (dancers) wear costumes and masks and run through the streets dancing and singing, trying to scare the spirits back to the land of the dead. November 3rd- The living may share and eat the objects from the altar. People usually give their objects to their neighbors saying, they were left for them by the souls. In Mixquic, a bellman rings a bell on the hours of each day of the dead to announce the different happenings and rituals to be performed. The Aztecs dedicated an entire month to the dead. The month was called Miccailhuitontli, and was named after and presided over by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, who was the Lady of the Dead. This happens from July 24th through August 12th. During this month, rituals were dedicated to her and the god of war known as Huitzilopochtli. This was the time of the harvest and it was believed that the souls followed the scents of the harvest in order to find their way to their altars.
