In June 1834, while marching with Zion's Camp through Illinois, Joseph Smith and his followers came across an ancient Native American burial mound. Members of the group dug into the mound and uncovered a human skeleton—with what appeared to be an arrowhead among its ribs. According to multiple members of Zion's Camp, Joseph Smith then received a vision revealing the identity of the dead man. His name was Zelph. He was described as a “white Lamanite,” a warrior and “man of God” who had fought under a great prophet named Onandagus. Wilford Woodruff recorded that Onandagus was known across a territory extending from “the hill Cumorah” to the Rocky Mountains and that Joseph received this information “in a vision.” But the story gets considerably more interesting when we dig deeper. In this episode of Mormonism Live, we examine the earliest surviving Zelph accounts from Wilford Woodruff, Reuben McBride, Levi Hancock, Heber C. Kimball, and others. What did these witnesses independently agree Joseph said? Which details appeared later? And how did the story change as it was edited into the official history of the Church? We also explore Joseph Smith's own remarkable letter written during Zion's Camp describing the group as wandering across the “plains of the Nephites,” examine the possible connections between Zelph, Cumorah, the Land of Desolation, and Book of Mormon geography, and look at what modern archaeology has discovered about the mound where the skeleton was reportedly found. Was Zelph simply an unusual nineteenth-century frontier story? Or did Joseph Smith make a specific prophetic claim about an actual ancient person—one that potentially tells us where Joseph believed Book of Mormon peoples lived? Bible News Prophecy with Dr Bob Thiel and Steve Dupuie Do End-Time Prophecies Require a Rebuilt Jewish Temple? Dr. Bob Thiel joins Steve Dupuie on Bible News Prophecy to examine the Temple Institute, the history of the first and second temples, New Testament uses of the Greek words naos and hieron, Christians as the temple of God, end-time animal sacrifices, the abomination of desolation, and his conclusion that a physical Jewish temple is not required for biblical prophecy to be fulfilled. The Temple Institute and the Desire to Rebuild Steve Dupuie opens by asking whether Jewish groups currently want to build a temple. Dr. Bob Thiel identifies the Temple Institute as one such organization and discusses a newsletter that cites Deuteronomy 12:5–7 and asks supporters to help rebuild the temple. Thiel notes, however, that the quoted passage speaks about a chosen place of worship and sacrifice without explicitly requiring a temple building. The First and Second Temples in Biblical History Thiel reviews the history of Solomon's temple, its destruction by Babylon, the construction of the second temple after Cyrus's decree, Herod's later expansion, and the temple's destruction by Roman forces in AD 70. He connects the latter event with Jesus' prophecy in Matthew 24 that not one stone would remain upon another. The transcript itself cautions that these historical dates are preserved as stated by the speakers and should be independently verified when used as formal historical citations. Christians as the Temple of God When Steve asks whether a holy Jewish temple can be built in the present age, Thiel answers no. He turns to passages in 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians that describe believers as the temple of the Holy Spirit and the temple of the living God. In his interpretation, the New Testament identifies Spirit-filled Christians, including Christian Jews, as God's holy temple rather than a future Jewish building. Naos and Hieron: Two Greek Words for Temple Thiel distinguishes between two Greek words translated as “temple.” He says hieron usually refers to a physical temple complex, while naos may refer to the inner sanctuary, Christ's body, or the community of believers. He points to John 2, where Jesus says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up,” and the passage explains that He was speaking of His body. Thiel uses this distinction to support his view that prophetic references to God's temple need not describe a rebuilt Jewish structure. A Spiritual Building With Christ as the Cornerstone The discussion continues with Ephesians 2, where Christians are described as a building founded on the apostles and prophets, with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone. Thiel interprets the growing “holy temple in the Lord” as the church collectively rather than a physical sanctuary. He also draws on 1 Peter to describe Christians as a chosen generation, royal priesthood, holy nation, and special people. Christ's Sacrifice and the Question of Holiness Thiel argues that New Testament teaching about Christ's sacrifice makes a restored system of temple sacrifices unnecessary for Christians. Referring to Hebrews 9, he describes Christ as High Priest of a greater tabernacle not made with human hands. From this, he concludes that a Jewish religious building may be constructed, but it would not constitute God's holy temple in the New Testament sense. Animal Sacrifices Without a Temple Steve asks whether Daniel's end-time prophecies concerning sacrifices require a temple. Thiel says they do not. He cites biblical examples of sacrifices offered before Solomon's temple existed and after the first temple was destroyed but before the second temple was completed. According to Thiel, an altar, priestly leadership, religious implements, willingness, and government permission would be sufficient for sacrifices to resume. The Abomination of Desolation and the “Holy Place” The final discussion concerns Jesus' warning in Matthew 24 about the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place. Thiel emphasizes that Jesus said “holy place,” not “holy temple.” He refers to the Greek terms topos for “place” and hagios for “holy,” arguing that the phrase may describe a location rather than a particular building. He therefore rejects the assumption that this prophecy requires a rebuilt Jewish temple. Living as God's Holy People Thiel closes by urging Christians not to wait for a temple that, in his view, God would recognize as holy in this age. Instead, he says Christians themselves are called to be God's holy people and should live accordingly. The episode concludes with a reference to the Bible News Prophecy website and the Continuing Church of God's free literature.

(Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Tanzanian Christians worried about Muslim threats In several Muslim-majority communities along Tanzania's coast in eastern Africa along the Indian Ocean, small Christian churches continue to worship under growing pressure, with pastors and congregations describing intimidation, disruption, and insecurity, reports International Christian Concern. For many believers in Zanzibar and parts of coastal Tanzania, where 99 percent of the population is Muslim, church leaders say some congregations have experienced threats, harassment, and occasional attacks.  One pastor said, “When a church is threatened, it is not only a building that is affected. People begin to fear even the simple act of coming together to pray. Mothers worry about bringing their children, and some believers spend the entire service looking over their shoulders instead of worshipping freely.” Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Tanzania. Trump, Hegseth clashed over missile depletion concerns President Donald Trump's frustration over the Iran war boiled over at Camp David last week, where he demanded answers from War Secretary Pete Hegseth on why he had apparently been misled on extreme munitions shortages that now threaten to limit military options with Iran, reports The Washington Post. President Trump vented at Hegseth that he thought the munitions issue “had been fixed.”  The shortages, particularly in long-range guided missiles and air-defense interceptors, have been part of the reason President Trump has pulled back from launching additional massive strikes against Iran in recent days. Senate Republicans hold Dr. Fauci in contempt of Congress Senate Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in contempt of Congress after he declined to answer lawmakers' questions during a fiery hearing last week, reports NBC News. Fauci, who has been a target of the right since he served as a top health official during the Covid pandemic, invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times during the hearing, explaining in his opening remarks that he believed Republicans would try to use his testimony to prosecute him. However, Fauci had been given a full and unconditional pardon by President Joe Biden before he left office on January 19, 2025. In an 8-5 party-line vote, Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held Fauci in contempt. Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, the committee chair, said, “We are voting on whether a witness who has received the benefit of a sweeping federal pardon can be ordered by this committee to answer questions and then defy that order without consequence.” He added, “I ordered him to answer and warned him about contempt, yet he still refused. That is obstruction of a congressional investigation.” The committee can refer the contempt of Congress resolution directly to the Justice Department or request that Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota hold a full Senate vote. Senator Paul said the committee would hand-deliver the referral to the Justice Department. Contempt of Congress is a criminal misdemeanor offense punishable by up to a $100,000 fine and one year in jail. Proverbs 18:12 says, “Before a downfall, the heart is haughty …” In an impromptu press conference, Senator Paul insisted that Dr. Fauci be held accountable for the COVID-19 pandemic. PAUL: “A million Americans died, and I think they deserve to know the truth. Anthony Fauci has advocated for dangerous gain-of-function research for two decades now. The question ‘why' is not a question that he can have liability for. “He was given a pardon. Interestingly, the pardon starts in 2014. That's when the funding of the lab in Wuhan, [China] started. So, I think he should answer questions. As far as pleading the Fifth [Amendment] when you have a pardon, all you have to do is tell the truth, just not commit a new crime. So, I think the American people do deserve to know this. “This is the same Anthony Fauci who said, in a Washington Post op-ed in 2011, even if a pandemic should start from a lab, if someone's bitten in a lab or the virus escapes the lab, that the knowledge would be worth the risks. I don't think many Americans believe that! “This deserves to be thoroughly, exhaustively debated, so we don't do this again.” Christian congressman: Dr. Fauci under divine judgment Appearing with Fox News Host Brian Kilmeade on July 27th, Republican Congressman Tim Burchett of Tennessee talked about the recent revelations from Dr. Anthony Fauci's pandemic-era diary entries which showed a fixation on his own "explosive" fame, reports The Christian Post. KILMEADE: “Congressman, we saw this, but now we can read this. What changes about how this guy is perceived once and for all?” BURCHETT: “I think his arrogance shows. The Bible talks about professing themselves to be wise; they became fools. We closed down mom-and-pop operations. Jewish and Christian fellowships were shut down. The big boys were allowed to stay open. This thing was a disaster from the start, and we celebrated this guy, [meaning Fauci].” The phrase from Romans 1:22-28, which is part of the Apostle Paul's larger indictment against the pagan world, describes the corruption and prideful self-delusion that afflicts the minds of those who reject God. The refusal to worship God leads to a litany of self-destructive sins that ends with God abandoning individuals and societies "to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.” Southwest Airlines blocks ICE from detaining illegal aliens on 6 flights Firm in the belief that immigration enforcement is bad for business, Southwest Airlines is pushing back hard against efforts to detain illegal immigrants at U.S. airports, reports The Western Journal. A report from the Wall Street Journal highlights a July 25 incident in which an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent tried to board a Southwest Airlines jet in Dallas. The agent was prevented from carrying out his duties by Southwest Airlines. The Dallas-based airline staff also refused to share passenger information with ICE. In recent weeks, a half-dozen other incidents involving Southwest have taken place. The incidents occur as ICE has been broadening their efforts to arrest illegal aliens at airports. Planned Parenthood sues Trump over denial of Title X funding And finally, Planned Parenthood is suing the Trump administration to challenge updated Title X funding guidelines issued earlier this year that could render the abortion giant ineligible for so-called “family planning” grants, reports LifeSiteNews.com. In April, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services issued updated guidelines for Title X applications, which drop contraception promotion in favor of “natural family planning methods,” tout an objective to “strengthen family formation and assist clients in achieving healthy pregnancies,” and require applicants to reject abortion as a method of family planning. The new standards threaten to disqualify longtime Title X recipients such as Planned Parenthood. As a result, the nation's largest abortion chain announced on July 29 that it is suing the Trump administration over them. Isaiah 59:7 describes the abortion giant to a “t.” “Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. In this trip to the drylands, we get to see the usual sights of abandonment, as we listen to the lady say these words to her confidante, when she learns of her man’s intention to part away so as to seek wealth: “Upon a parched, dull-headed tree, which has dried up, losing all its leaves, akin to a spun net, spiders have woven their cobwebs in those wastelands. Akin to the spread of threads on a loom when stitching a garment, the sun's rays shimmer in that sweltering drylands space.  Small, young fruits of the toothbrush tree in the shape of a cuckoo's eyes mature and turn into dark purple fruits, appearing akin to precious gems, and these fall from the soft branches of the tree, in the heat of summer in those arid spaces. They say he's going to part away alone thither, my friend! About me, they say that in the manner of a young calf, which desires to be with its mother, but is separated by herders, lacking culture, I will suffer and suffer, and speak many disparaging things. Why did that lover of mine fall prey to such an illusion?” Time to take a walk through these formidable spaces again! The lady starts by talking about the drylands, and to do that she focuses on the cobwebs spun around a dried-up tree, as if a net has been cast upon it. Then she turns her attention to the scorching sun’s rays and places that in parallel to the threads in a loom at a weaver’s place. The similes continue and she equates the fruits of the toothbrush tree, first to a cuckoo’s eyes when unripe and then to precious gems when ripe. She mentions how these lie scattered in the heat of the summer. All these facets have been recorded to say that’s where the man is heading, all alone, according to the townsfolk. Then she mentions how these same townsfolk are saying that now the lady will cry and wallow like a calf separated from its mother by those cruel cattle herders. The lady concludes by wondering why the man had become so confused and chose this path that leads nowhere! Other than the usual lament about a man parting away, the essence of this verse lies in its picture perfect similes to capture both the spread of the land and the suffering of the mind!

For the second part of my ongoing series about Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Clara from Angura Research Center was kind enough to return to the show. You might remember her from the episode we did together on Shuji Terayama, but she’s also a huge Kurosawa fan. We had a lot to say about the horror films and thrillers he made at the beginning of the 2000s: Séance (2000), Pulse (2001), Bright Future (2002), Doppelganger (2003), and the short film Matasaburo the Wind Imp (2003). I think you can tell from the episode that we could truly have just kept talking about Kurosawa forever and are both dazzled by him. The Exhortation in View of Desolation(05/24/26)

The disciples had just witnessed Jesus feed 5,000 people, yet when faced with feeding 4,000, they asked: Where will we get enough food? Why do we forget yesterday's miracle when facing today's problem? Jesus didn't ask for more resources - He simply asked what they had available. The kingdom of heaven has never depended on the abundance in your hands, only on the surrender of what is in your hands. Are you just amazed by Jesus, or are you actually following Him?

The Temple will be a place where the true God is worshiped... until a false god struts in. Today we'll look at the "Abomination of Desolation." Daniel prophesied it, Jesus warned of it. It's the desecration of the most holy place by a most unholy person. But that place does not exist, today! The city of peace had become a city of blood. The city that was supposed to receive the prophets murdered them. The city that was supposed to teach the Law to the nations rejected the messengers who called her back to that Law. Yet Christ's words are not cold judgment. They are judgment through tears. He had long summoned Jerusalem under the shelter of His wings, but she was unwilling. So Jesus pronounces the sentence: “Behold, your house is being left to you desolate!” This is not vague end-of-the-world language. It is the covenantal abandonment of the old-covenant temple order, fulfilled in the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in AD 70. The house was left desolate because Immanuel had departed. But is the a failure of God's promises? God forbid!  It is their fulfillment in Christ. The old house is abandoned because the true Temple has come. The old priesthood is eclipsed because the true Priest has come. The old sacrifices are finished because the true Sacrifice has come. And the new house is being built in Him.

Today, Pastor Jack teaches that spiritual desolation will not only involve grief and fear, but it's lonely as well. When we turn back to intimacy with God and return to prayer and the study of God's Word, life will become pure, simple, and even beautiful again.
