Joe McGovern is a former teacher, vice principal, social worker, pro soccer player, and wilderness therapy guide who now makes his living acting and teaching in Los Angeles. Joe is also the filmmaker and star of the documentary film The Other Side, in which he travels around the US in a camper van, meeting and interviewing conservatives and those on the other end of the political spectrum from himself, a progressive liberal democrat. 20,000 miles, 5 months, 35 states and 82 interviews later, The Other Side was finally completed with support from The Foundation for Independent Voter Education (FIVE) and with help from the public through a GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign. theothersidedocumentary.com The Rolling Wave theme music by OILS oilsoilsoils.bandcamp.com

In this episode, we prepared for Judgment Day by watching all of the Terminator movies (1984-2015/forever). How did the franchise end up with some of the most iconic imagery of nuclear weapon use? Should we be worried about artificial intelligence taking over our nuclear command and control systems? Why does Skynet seem to put out more models of terminator than Apple does iPhones? Tim, Joel, and special guest Alex answer these questions and more. Before we say “hasta la vista… baby,” we recommend reading: -Ben Shapiro, Atomic Bomb Cinema, 2001 -Bruce Blair, Strategic Command and Control, 1985 and The Logic of Accidental Nuclear War, 1993 -Joe McGovern, “‘The Terminator’ at 30: An Oral History,” Entertainment Weekly, July 17, 2014 Check out these resources and more on our website, SuperCriticalPodcast.com. For the August13, 2015 edition of Tell Somebody,I got together with Joe McGovern to talk about his current project. According to his website, theothersidedocumentary.com, Joe is a progressive liberal democrat who has always been interested in politics, but who recently grew tired of the extreme political partisanship in America today. He got the idea for a documentary film he calls “The Other Side: a liberal democrat explores conservative America” to see if he could find another way – a better way – to talk to those he disagrees with. 20,000 miles, 5 months, 35 states and 82 interviews later, Joe and his team are editing the footage of his journey into a 75 minute documentary. Joe and Charlie were passing through the area again on August 8, 2015, and I caught up with him in Independence, MO for breakfast and a conversation about his film. Give a listen. Bennet Kelley taks to filmmaker and author Joe McGovern, who has left the comforts of his home in Venice Beach, California and traveled across the country seeking out Republicans to try to bridge the partisan divide as part of his documentary The Other Side. He currently is raising money on GoFundMe to finish and distribute the end result of 82 interviews..
Joe McGovern, just like John Steinbeck, only completely differently, is driving across America with his dog Charlie. Joe is in search of conservative Republicans to talk to and record for a documentary film he is calling The Other Side. Can progressives learn anything useful from those on the right?
