The latest “State of the Air” report by the American Lung Association finds that nearly half of people living in the U.S. breathe unhealthy levels of air pollution. Soot and smog are on the rise in part because climate change is bringing more wildfires and ozone-forming conditions. Also, a key climate modeling program within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or NOAA is slated for near-elimination, according to a draft White House memo. That could have consequences for weather forecasting, disaster preparedness, agriculture, military operations and more. Plus - parakeets have astounding vocal abilities and are able to mimic as many as 1700 human words. And their brains may provide insight into how we humans talk. In a recent study, researchers found human-like neural activity during vocalization. They hope this research may help shed light on communication disorders in humans such as autism. ***Join us on Zoom Thursday, May 8 at 8 p.m. Eastern for the next Living on Earth Book Club event! Can rising insurance premiums finally make climate change a reality for everyone? And, what does it mean for the world that climate change denier Donald Trump has returned to the American presidency? Jonathan Mingle, journalist and author of "Fire and Ice," joins the podcast to explore the tangible impacts of climate change on everyday life. We discuss the disturbing projections of a world three degrees warmer and the looming crisis of insurability in the U.S. We also examine political challenges and the potential impacts of a second Trump presidency on global climate action, highlighting the stark choices and immediate actions needed to address these issues amidst seeming federal inaction. There is an urgent need to break free from our fossil fuel dependency and rethink our energy, agriculture, and land use systems for a climate-stable future. So, we discuss the current impacts of climate change, such as wildfires, hurricanes, and heatwaves, which are not just future threats but present realities. Our discussion spans from the tangible effects on regions like New England and Vermont to the broader socio-political implications, including mass migrations, rising nationalism, and xenophobia, drawing parallels with historical events like the Arab Spring.Messaging plays a critical role in the climate change debate, and we examine the challenges of crafting a universally compelling narrative that transcends political divides. Despite widespread support for climate initiatives, political messaging remains contentious, and Jonathan highlights the importance of building coalitions to advance meaningful action. Finally, we highlight the environmental and health impacts of black carbon, the pressing need to rethink democratic structures for better climate outcomes, and the importance of both individual and corporate responsibility in addressing these urgent environmental challenges.-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:BlueskyYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

In today's episode, we explore a tragic but educational case involving a 15-year-old girl who suffered severe inhalation injury following a house fire. While heroically rescuing her brother and his friend, she endured prolonged cardiac arrest and severe multi-organ dysfunction. We'll focus on the pathophysiology, investigation, and management of inhalation injuries, including the critical role of recognizing carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning in these complex cases.Key Learning Points:Exposure to house fire and prolonged cardiac arrestSigns of inhalation injury and airway compromisePathophysiology of inhalation injuries and their impact on multiple organ systemsManagement strategies for inhalation injury, including airway protection and ventilationDifferentiating carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning in pediatric fire victimsCase PresentationA 15-year-old previously healthy girl is brought to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) after experiencing cardiac arrest during a house fire. She was found unconscious by firefighters after a heroic rescue attempt where she saved her brother and his friend. Upon arrival at the hospital, she was unresponsive, intubated, and in severe cardiovascular distress with signs of multi-organ dysfunction.Key findings include:Soot deposits and superficial burns on extremitiesProlonged resuscitation (45 minutes of field CPR and 47 minutes of in-hospital CPR)Cardiovascular compromise with PVCs, cool extremities, and delayed capillary refillMetabolic acidosis, AKI, coagulopathy, transaminitisSevere hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy on EEGThese findings raise immediate concern for inhalation injury, which is the primary focus of today's discussion.Pathophysiology of Inhalation InjuryWhen a patient is exposed to smoke and hot gases during a fire, inhalation injury results in significant damage to the respiratory system. Inhalation injury has three main components:Upper airway involvement – Thermal injury can cause swelling and obstruction.Chemical pneumonitis – Noxious chemicals like carbon monoxide and cyanide trigger inflammation in the lungs.

Support the showSupport the show

Op Potkaars: https://potkaars.nl/blog/2024/10/27/nabeschouwing-met-willem-engel-en-bodemprocedure-viruswaarheid-vs-cbg-24-oktober-2024Support the show
SHOW NOTES: Today, as temperatures cool, learn the importance of servicing your heating system and having your chimney cleaned. You'll also hear an easy way to stop leaky toilet flushes, plus lots of expert advice for DIY homeowners just like you to get projects done the right way! - Chimney Cleaning: Soot happens, but cleaning your chimney will keep your home safe and smoke-free. - Heating System: Avoid winter woes by having your heating system professionally serviced. - Leaky Toilets: Flush out the problem with this innovative fix for a leaky toilet flush valve. Q & A: - Soundproofing: Noisy neighbors can be heard through a duplex wall. Donna can muffle the sound by adding a second layer of drywall or a noise-proofing compound. - Pool Water: Mac's pool is green when he uncovers it each spring. Leaving the filter running while it's covered may strain the equipment, so he should use chemicals to shock the water. - Concrete Repair: Seeping water has cracked a corner of Audrey's concrete porch. It's a common problem that's easily fixed with products that will adhere to the old cement. - Fencing: How should Sam treat the cedar fence posts he's installing? He should tamp down gravel stone around the posts to allow drainage instead of pouring cement, which will hold moisture. - Windows: Natalie's old vinyl windows won't stay up. The springs in the window jams have broken down and are hard to fix, so it may be time to replace the windows. - Basement Water: Water came into the basement after a big storm. Scott gets tips for improving the outside drainage first, then addressing the grading and retaining wall. - Electrical Wiring: Sandra's very old house has knob and tubing wiring in some areas. It's very dangerous and should be deactivated and updated as soon as possible. - Bathroom Vanity: How can Nick attach a marble bathroom vanity top to the cabinet base? After doing a dry fit for plumbing, he should apply adhesive to the top edge of the base and caulk against the wall. - Backsplash: Audrey is curious about a product used for backsplashes. It's a two-sided adhesive material she can stick on the wall first, and then stick tiles to the material. - Deck Stain: How soon can Randy stain a new pressure-treated lumber deck? We recommend waiting till spring to expose it to the elements and let it dry out. ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help! Soot is perhaps the most complex product of combustion, and at the same time one of the most profound for our everyday fire safety engineering. The topic of soot is not getting much love in the world of fire science, so I've chosen to give you a broad introduction to this subject. In this episode of fire fundamentals we will go through:· Soot creation from chemical perspective;· Soot creation from practical perspective;· Soot effects on radiation, toxicity and obscuration;· Extinction coefficient and specific extinction coefficient;· Soot yield and surrogate value of soot yield for complex fuels. If you would like to follow up on this episode with some reading, I highly recommend:· Bart Merci and Tarek Beji book „Fluid Mechanics Aspects of Fire and Smoke Dynamics in Enclosures”· Jose Torero lecture “Prof. Jose Torero - Fire: A Story of Fascination, Familiarity and Fear” available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIY0litILRA&t=2082s· W. “Stay there in the garden, where love grows free and wild. Come to my garden. Come, sweet child.” While these lyrics are technically from The Secret Garden Musical, they feel quite fitting as we once again discuss The Secret Garden; however, this time we're taking it back to the thing that started it all - the book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Join us as we compare the book, the musical, and the movie, discuss some key characters who we meet for the first time, and learn once again that pronunciations are difficult for Taylor.

Spotify Wrapped discussion starts at 11:35. Before that section, Elle talks about Wilbur Soot's new surprise solo album ‘Mammalian Sighing Reflex'.
A soot particle is smaller than particles of dust and mold. It's about 1/30 the size of a human hair. And it is a pollutant dangerous for humans and the environment. We talk with a Marquette University professor who's studying soot and engaging the public about its impact.
Life on Earth is based on carbon. It's one of the most common elements in the universe. So you might think that Earth itself would be packed with the stuff — but it's not. Carbon accounts for roughly three-hundredths of one percent of Earth's crust. That means Earth probably formed inside the “soot line” — the distance from the young Sun where conditions were cool enough to form carbon compounds. The Sun and planets were born from a giant cloud of gas and dust. Most of the cloud collapsed to form the Sun. But a swirling disk of material encircled the young Sun. It contained a rich chemical brew, including a fair amount of carbon. But the young Sun was so hot that it vaporized nearby bits of carbon compounds and others. It then blew the resulting gases into the outer solar system. At a certain distance away, temperatures got low enough for the carbon to form solid grains — the soot line. Many of these grains were incorporated into the newly forming planets beyond that line. Earth was inside the soot line, though, so there wasn't much carbon to gobble up. A recent study said the zone between the soot line and the surface of a star might be a good region to scan for possibly habitable planets. Such worlds would be bigger and heavier than Earth. They might have atmospheres made of methane, and a rich mixture of other carbon compounds — some of the most important ingredients for life like that on Earth.
