In this episode, we're joined by local author David Gendell, whose work shines a light on Annapolis history and its unique place in the Chesapeake Bay story. We touched on his earlier books about the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse and the schooner America, before diving into his newest release, Battles at Annapolis. The book tells the story of the two Army–Navy football games ever played in Annapolis—one in 1893 and the other in 1942. David walks us through the atmosphere of those games, the colorful characters on and off the field, and how both contests reflected the times—one in an era of growth and tradition, the other during the uncertainty of World War II. It's a blend of sports, history, and hometown pride, all told through the lens of Annapolis's most iconic rivalry. Have a listen. Lonnie Jordan — the voice, keys, and heartbeat of WAR — is headed to Annapolis for two intimate nights at Rams Head On Stage on September 25 and 26, 2025, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Why Can't We Be Friends?. Tickets available! I caught up with Lonnie to preview the shows: what the band is bringing to a close-up venue like Rams Head, how the anniversary set differs from a standard WAR night, and which deep cuts, medleys, and story moments he's weaving between the hits. We also dug into carrying the legacy as the last founding member onstage, the “pocket” that makes a WAR groove feel like WAR, and how a band called WAR has spent five decades singing about unity and connection. With era-defining songs like “Low Rider,” “Why Can't We Be Friends?,” “The Cisco Kid,” and “Spill the Wine,” WAR's music has topped charts, soundtracked films and stadiums, and been sampled across generations — and now you can experience it shoulder-to-shoulder in one of the most intimate rooms on the tour.      In 2019, Gerardo Martinez had a crazy idea to buy a vacant lot in Edgewater that was overgrown and had become a town dumping spot and turn it into a sustainable farm. Here we are five years later and Wild Kid Acres is an international model for sustainability and Gerardo now sits as the Goodwill Ambassador for Regenerative Agriculture at the United Nations! To say this little farm has come a long way is a gross underestimate. We spoke with Gerardo back in 2022 and wanted to catch up and see what was new. Farm visits continue, but has expanded to include a huge educational element. Gone is the cinder block shed, replaced with a 10,000 SF barn built by a small Army (err I mean Navy) of volunteers. The present is busy, and the future looks bright as Gerardo takes his ideas around thye globe to demonstrate how farms will sustain us in so many ways--with nourishment to community! Annapolis is gearing up for one of its signature traditions this fall — the return of the world-famous Annapopis Powerboat and Annapolis Sailboat Shows. First up is the Annapolis Powerboat Show from October 2–5, followed by the Annapolis Sailboat Show from October 9–12. Tickets are on sale now, and we caught up with Mary Ewenson, one of the show's owners, to get the inside scoop. Mary shared what attendees can expect this year: the sheer number of boats on display, the exciting debuts of some very cool new models, and why both serious buyers and casual dreamers will want to make their way to City Dock in Downtown Annapolis. We also talked logistics, from parking and dining, to how the shows are being organized amid ongoing construction. Of equal (if not more) importance, we got an answer to the burning question, "What will we do without a Pusser's Painkiller?" Most importantly, we discussed what these shows mean to Annapolis, not just as a community gathering but as a cornerstone of the global boating world. Have a listen. We dive into the mission of OEM and the wide range of responsibilities they carry to keep residents safe. Preeti also shares some practical tips for preparedness that every household can put into place, along with a candid look at the challenges that keep her awake at night. From communication systems and community outreach to the behind-the-scenes capabilities that most people don't even realize exist, she gives us an inside look at how the county gears up for emergencies big and small. Craig Cussimanio - https://www.craigforward6.com/ The future of Annapolis is on the ballot this year, and the first big step comes on Tuesday, September 16th, with the Democratic Primary. While there are no contested Republican primaries, Democratic voters will be making critical choices in Ward 1, Ward 3, Ward 4, Ward 6, and for Mayor. The winners here will move on to November's general election, where they'll be joined by candidates in Ward 2, Ward 5, Ward 7, and Ward 8. This election could not be more important. Annapolis will elect a new mayor and see a majority of the City Council change hands. If you've ever wanted your voice heard—if you've ever wanted change—this is the time to show up and vote. Local elections determine how our neighborhoods grow, how our streets are maintained, how our taxes are spent, and how our future is shaped. Every single vote matters, and staying home is simply not an option. To help voters make informed decisions, we invited every candidate in a contested race to join us for an unedited podcast conversation. Each candidate was asked the same questions—none of which were provided in advance—and all had the opportunity to answer freely, speak at length, and close with their own pitch to voters. These were not polished campaign ads, but candid conversations meant to give you a better sense of the people behind the campaign signs. We encourage every voter to listen to these conversations. They're raw, honest, and a chance to hear directly from the people who want to represent you. Don't miss this opportunity to make your own decision based on what you hear—not just what you see on a mailer or a yard sign. September 16th is your chance to make a real impact on the future of Annapolis. Mark your calendar, remind your neighbors, and most importantly—show up and vote.

Tucked away in Shady Side is one of the Chesapeake's true hidden gems—the Captain Avery Museum. Step through the doors and you're stepping back into the 1860s, into the life of a waterman making his living from the Bay. It's a small museum with a big story, and right now it's hosting something very special. The Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit called SPARK is on display, showing how rural communities across America have solved local problems with the creativity of ordinary people. It's a fascinating reminder that innovation doesn't just come from labs and cities—it happens in our neighborhoods too. And while you're there, don't miss Buyboats to Beaches, a semi-permanent exhibit that traces 100 years of resiliency on the Chesapeake. The centerpiece is the Norman Gross collection of boat models—each one tied to a personal story, each one a piece of Bay history made tangible. Of course, no Chesapeake museum would be complete without celebrating the oyster, and the Captain Avery Museum does it in style with their annual Oyster Festival. Mark your calendars for October 15th when the grounds will come alive with food, music, and all things oyster. We sat down with Executive Director Elaina Lill Uhl and Board Member Peggy Oriani to talk about what makes the museum so unique, the joy of preserving Bay heritage, and how these exhibits keep the waterman's story alive for future generations. If you've never been to the Captain Avery Museum, it's worth the trip. History, community, innovation, and oysters—it's all waiting in Shady Side. Have a listen! Ray Weaver is coming home to Maryland with two powerful performances this September. You can catch him at the Annapolis Songwriters Festival, running September 11 through 14, where he'll also be leading a free songwriting workshop for festivalgoers. Then, on September 15, Ray will headline an intimate evening at Killarney House Pub in Davidsonville with A Father's Heart—a night of music and stories benefiting EMBOLC. Seating is limited for that special event. In our conversation today, Ray opened up about his local roots in Pasadena, how his music resonates across audiences, and the inspiration behind both his upcoming appearances and future projects. With a career that's earned praise from legends like Rodney Crowell and taken him across Europe and the U.S., Ray continues to craft songs that connect deeply while telling stories that matter. The Steep Canyon Rangers are headed to Annapolis for the Annapolis Songwriters Festival, bringing their acclaimed sound to Maryland Hall on September 11, 2025! [ad ASWF] I had the chance to catch up with Aaron Burdett to talk about the upcoming show, his role as the newest member of the Rangers, and how he's bringing a fresh voice to a band already known for pushing the boundaries of bluegrass. We also dug into the band's songwriting process, their journey from the mountains of North Carolina to the biggest stages in music, and how they've managed to keep their sound both rooted in tradition and constantly evolving. With 14 studio albums, Grammy recognition, and collaborations with Steve Martin under their belt, the Rangers have proven themselves as one of the most influential groups in Americana and bluegrass today—and now they're bringing it all to Annapolis.
