If we are lucky, we will live a healthy and full life. But for some, the start can be a little rough. Jonah is one of them. Jonah was born in January of 2021. When he came home from the hospital, he was a little jaundiced, and his parents, Danielle and Sean Moore weren't overly concerned. But when it did not get better, more tests were done and Jonah was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. The diagnosis would change their world. Jonah, at only a few months old, needed a liver transplant. Danielle was a perfect donor. Meanwhile, Sean, a firefighter with Anne Arundel County needed to hold it all together while caring for their other son. For sure, theirs is a story of love, commitment, and tenacity. But it is a story of thankfulness. For each other, for the fire department community, for friends and relatives, for strangers, and for family. And also, thankfulness for Jonah who is a fighter at 10-months of age, but with the help of those that love him, go on to do great things! This is a lifelong health concern for Jonah and his parents have set up a fund (to only be used for Jonah's costs to treat the BA)through the Children's Organ Transplant Association to handle some of his costs in the future--who knows what medicine will cost in 20 or 30 years? And through community donations and fundraisers, it is off to a great start! Have a listen first. And then read up, learn, and help if you can! And disgustingly, he describes what happens when it is not healthy! We discuss the ongoing changes in the recycling world and a new concern for the Bay and the environment--septic pollution! He and his wife opened an office of Goosehead Insurance. The commute evaporated and Tim and Clare were now afforded the chance to become a part of the community where they lived and played. We sat down with Tim the other day to talk about why people should work with a broker for things as simple as car and home insurance. And we found out that things are not so simple as car and home insurance. Goosehead represents more than 100 carriers and Tim and Clare's expertise can guide you to the best product for your individual needs.  One comment stuck out for me during our conversation. WARNING: F-Bombs Ahead. NSFW (or little kids) You've been warned!  Another disclaimer--Monica and I are friends and this was one of the most comfortable and fun ones of these local business spotlights! With all that said, today we sit down with Monica Alvarado to talk about her thriving business, Bread and Butter Kitchen located at 2nd Street and the Annapolis Harbor. Burnt out from the corporate drag, in 2016, Monica took a leap of faith and took over a fledgling cafe on a handshake (mistake), and Bread and Butter Kitchen was born. But now, in their sixth year, thousands of area residents have made it a favorite place for breakfast or lunch.  Monica works with local farmers to source their food and places such a high priority on her employees--it's SO refreshing. In fact, much of the menu is a result of her crew's creativity in the kitchen. Monica does NOT work closely with maskholes. And by that, we mean those that refused to honor her mask-required policy during COVID despite plenty of ways to order and eat withot a mask in place at their harborside tables. Her policy was in place primarily for her employees some of whom are at a higher risk, and to be honest, a no maskhole policy is a good one! As I said, Bread and Butter Kitchen is the Hard Rock Cafe of Annapolis -- Love All Serve All.   And if you have not been there, make the trip. Parking is reasonably plentiful nearby and just added..a slip for you boaters! Have a listen! When October ends, it means that the holiday season is upon us and in Anne Arundel County, that means the return of Galway Bay's Irish Egg Nog! We sat down with Anthony Clarke and Sean Lynch to talk about the origins of the egg nog and really what is the secret ingredient that sets this apart from all the others!  We talked about the guy who drives from Michigan to pick up several cases and then drives back (that's dedication) to exactly how much they produced in Ireland for this year--because once it is gone, it is gone! And did you know they have Galway Bay Irish Egg Nog ice cream now too? ONLY available in their restaurants as a dessert or for takeaway in pint containers. It's a perfect addition to pumpkin pie at my Thanksgiving dinner. This is a partnership with Always Ice Cream (formerly Annapolis Ice Cream) and sorry kids--you need to be 21 to get this treat too! It is only available for a limited time (or until the supply runs out) and ONLY available here in Maryland. The easiest way to score a bottle or ten is to order online and then pick it up at Galway Bay, Brian Boru, Killarney House, or Pirate's Cove along with lunch or dinner! Of course, it is also available at your favorite liquor store! Have a listen and then put in your order before it's all gone! LINKS: Galway Bay Irish Egg Nog

Dealing with cancer is something too many of us will need to deal with in our lifetimes. If we have health insurance, it may cover a portion of the cost of medical care. But what about the rest?  From emotional support for families to transportation to a loss of income, cancer is quite simply devastating. And Fish For A Cure has been helping bridge that gap since 2007! The concept is simple and fun. Get some friends together, raise some money, go fishing, and have a celebration all to benefit the Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center's Geaton and JoAnn DeCesaris Cancer Institute. Today, we sit down with Lex Arizzi, one of the event's longtime organizers to learn more, and how to support the cause.  I just made my contribution to a boat...will you? Have a listen!
