A while back, we spoke with Jo Ann at STAIR and learned that their services stop at second grade. But what about beyond? Enter Erin Snell and Charting Careers! Erin is the Executive Director who is steering the ship and steering our Annapolis area under-served youth to success in middle school, high school, college, and career. Combined with a small staff and a small army of volunteers, this local non-profit is truly making a difference in the lives of students and young adults, but also of their families. The Charting Careers program is seeing its success as "their kids" excel in school and move on to careers and higher education, which was seemingly out of reach. This is an organization worthy of financial support as well as volunteer support--you can be a mentor or even something as simple as driving a student to a program that would otherwise be inaccessible. Have a listen! LINKS: Charting Careers (Website) Charting Careers (Facebook) Charting Careers (Instagram)

Who is Ben? Ben is many things. He is an Annapolitan. He's a loving son. He's a fighter. He's a cancer survivor. He beat all the odds. And tragically, he's no longer with us. Today we speak with Ben's parents, Leslie and Kirk Shadrick who are carrying on his legacy in a number of ways. We learn about Ben's short life, and all that he enjoyed. We discussed his struggles and victories and his death. And we discuss how his legacy will live on. The Benjamin Mario Shadrick Foundation is building an orphanage in Cuernavaca Mexico in Ben's name. Additionally, they provide grants to help with costs for alternative cancer treatments and for training for parents of a brain-injured child. More immediately, in partnership with Maryland Hall, they will be hosting a fundraiser on November 18th called Movers & Shakers. In a nutshell, local community members and leaders will be paired with professional dancers in a Dancing With the Stars style event. County Executive Steuart Pittman will be dancing, but as of now, it is undetermined if he will be a mover, or a shaker! Have a listen! One of my favorite places to shop is Local By Design (downtown, at the mall, and in the gallery) and I particularly enjoy their monthly Market weekends at the Gallery (last weekend of the month). And the last time, I discovered Sage Vintage! What a cool little shop amongst many cool little shops in the Annapolis Design District. They are located at 1805C Virginia Drive (across from In Home Stone) in Annapolis and for unique home furnishings and accessories, it is a place to check out. We spoke with Beth to find out what "mid-century" means, how she sources the furniture and accessories (spoiler, she has a big truck with a lot of miles on it), and discussed some of the fantastic finds in this shop that was meant for browsing--from candles to armoires. From carpets to Pyrex! Swing by. Often. The inventory is constantly changing. Have a listen! LINKS: Sage Vintage (Website) Sage Vintage (Facebook) Sage Vintage (Instagram)

So the name "Irish Restaurant Company" may not be too familiar, but if I were to say Galway Bay, Killarney House, Brian Boru, Pirates Cove, or Egg Nog, you might perk up! Today, we speak with GM Sean Lynch, and co-owner Anthony Clarke about their four restaurants and how each has become not only a restaurant in a community but a part OF the community. From fundraising dinners to making the staff and customers feel truly like family. We talk about the Axis of Evil (trivia team at Galway's Pub Quiz Night) and their donations to Box of Rain; and the $800,000 in charitable contributions that the Irish Restaurant Company has facilitated and contributed to that goes back to our community. Galway Bay got a renovation recently as did Killarney House, and up this winter--Pirate's Cove! New menus and of course, egg nog. Yes, the famous Galway Bay Egg Nog is currently on a slow boat from Ireland, and this year they are bringing in 2 containers worth--according to Anthony it is about 4,600 bottles! But you can find it at any of their restaurants, most area liquor stores, and even online (but they cannot ship so you need to pick it up at a restaurant). And don't forget, the special Galway Bay Egg Nog Ice Cream is available too in partnership with Always Ice Cream! Truly a great organization and a great bunch of people! Have a listen! There's a new school in town, and it is likely coming to the Annapolis Mall! New Village Academy is a different type of public high school designed to allow those who have "checked out" of school to realize their full potential by teaching differently! With a focus on mentorship, internship, and peer support, this new school has received the green light from the Anne Arundel County Board of Education to move forward and begin to accept students beginning in the fall of 2024. We sat down with the founder/brainchild of the school, Romey Pittman (yes, she is the sister of Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman) and Darius Stanton, President of the Governing Board to learn a lot more. This is a tuition-free public school that understands that reading, writing, and arithmetic are not for everyone. This is a public school that understands that students thrive when they are engaged and that not everyone engages in the same way. This is a public school that is poised to set Anne Arundel County apart from the crowd when it comes to educating our children. Have a listen!
