PlayAnnapolis is working to make sure every child in the Annapolis area has the opportunity to participate in sports and recreation, regardless of cost, transportation or circumstance. In this episode of the Local Business Spotlight, Emily Tomasini, co-founder and president of PlayAnnapolis, and Stan Womack, founder of the Annapolis All Stars, discuss the barriers that keep children off the field and why access to organized sports matters far beyond the final score. PlayAnnapolis brings together eighteen local sports programs to raise money for scholarships, connect families with available leagues and advocate for better fields and facilities. The group has also partnered with local schools to introduce children to soccer, basketball, lacrosse and other activities close to home. Scholarship support grew from about $1,900 during its first year to nearly $18,000 the following year, a sign that both the demand and the opportunity are significant. Emily and Stan also talk about the need for coaches, referees, mentors, volunteers and community partners, along with a long-term vision for a dedicated athletic complex in Annapolis. The Massacoustics may only be two brothers onstage, but Andrew and Matthew Thompson have spent more than 25 years figuring out how to make two people sound like a full band. (Have you ever seen a guy drum with one hand and play the bass with the other?) Their music pulls from Americana, roots rock, country, and gritty acoustic road music, with big harmonies, a no-frills live approach, and the kind of chemistry that only comes from playing together for decades. In this conversation, we talk about their upcoming show at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis on Thursday, June 18, what fans can expect from a Massacoustics live set, and why they have stayed away from loops, tracks, and other stage shortcuts. Dermot and Kieran Mulroney are bringing a little California country to Annapolis. Their band, jackrabbit., is headed to Rams Head On Stage on Saturday, May 30, as part of the First Rodeo Tour, and this conversation digs into the sound, the songs, and the brotherly chemistry behind it all. The Mulroneys describe jackrabbit. as "Cali-Country," a blend of Bakersfield twang, Eagles-style harmonies, and the warm, easy feel of classic Sunset Strip soft rock.
