Bonus Podcast: An Exit Interview With Gavin Buckley

Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley sat down with me, "a dodgy at best journalist ever. No fact-checking, complete bullshit, but he does his job, which is horrific, the Annapolis equivalent of Fox News," for an in-depth and candid conversation as he wrapped up his second and final term in office, reflecting on eight eventful years that transformed the city and tested its resilience. In this hour-long interview recorded in late August, Buckley discusses everything from the City Dock redevelopment and economic revitalization to lessons learned from crises like the Capital Gazette shooting, the pandemic, and frequent flooding events. He defends the urgency of the City Dock project, arguing that those trying to block it "should be ashamed," and stresses the need for world-class facilities to match Annapolis's global maritime reputation. He also opens up about challenges behind the scenes, including struggles with city permitting, public art projects that never came to fruition, and balancing transparency with leadership amid criticism. Buckley's trademark mix of humor and blunt honesty shines through as he looks back on the highs and lows of governing a historic city while trying to modernize it—sometimes against strong headwinds. Looking ahead, Buckley says he's ready to give his family a break and enjoy Annapolis as a private citizen again, though he hints at staying involved in economic development. He speaks proudly of Maryland's bipartisan cooperation and praises state leaders for putting people before politics, suggesting the state could serve as a national model. The conversation captures Buckley's unapologetic passion for Annapolis, his self-deprecating humor, and his enduring optimism about the city's future. NOTE: This was recorded on August 19, 2025. We held the release of this to not cause any undue interference with the current election. Have a listen!

Best known as the frontman of Men at Work, Colin has built a rich solo career blending sharp lyrics, acoustic pop, and a lot of humanity. In this conversation, he looks back at the early days, how he rebuilt his audience, and talks about what fans can expect when he brings his live show to the Francis Scott Key Auditorium. Is your life a hot mess? Join the club! Is your home or office a hot mess? Join that club too! But, for that club, Tina Gann has the answer. Simply Organized is a professional organizer that was born out of Tina's own "aha" moment when, during an overseas move, she was forced to live out of a suitcase! Simply Organized doesn't just come and organize; they will actually learn how you live and organize according to your lifestyle, which makes perfect sense to me. They can work hand-in-hand with you, or you can give them free rein to get you less stressed and more productive. One service that made a lot of sense to me was unpacking. Say you are moving and your new home is a blank slate, why not let Tina and team come in and organize and unpack it for you? I'm planning an extra night in a hotel to let Simply Organized handle that for my next move! And, before we stopped recording, Tina left us with some solid DIY tips for getting our organizing act together! Have a listen.

We touched on his earlier books about the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse and the schooner America, before diving into his newest release, Battles at Annapolis. The book tells the story of the two Army–Navy football games ever played in Annapolis—one in 1893 and the other in 1942. David walks us through the atmosphere of those games, the colorful characters on and off the field, and how both contests reflected the times—one in an era of growth and tradition, the other during the uncertainty of World War II. It's a blend of sports, history, and hometown pride, all told through the lens of Annapolis's most iconic rivalry. Have a listen. Tickets available! I caught up with Lonnie to preview the shows: what the band is bringing to a close-up venue like Rams Head, how the anniversary set differs from a standard WAR night, and which deep cuts, medleys, and story moments he's weaving between the hits. We also dug into carrying the legacy as the last founding member onstage, the “pocket” that makes a WAR groove feel like WAR, and how a band called WAR has spent five decades singing about unity and connection. With era-defining songs like “Low Rider,” “Why Can't We Be Friends?,” “The Cisco Kid,” and “Spill the Wine,” WAR's music has topped charts, soundtracked films and stadiums, and been sampled across generations — and now you can experience it shoulder-to-shoulder in one of the most intimate rooms on the tour. Here we are five years later and Wild Kid Acres is an international model for sustainability and Gerardo now sits as the Goodwill Ambassador for Regenerative Agriculture at the United Nations! To say this little farm has come a long way is a gross underestimate. We spoke with Gerardo back in 2022 and wanted to catch up and see what was new. Farm visits continue, but has expanded to include a huge educational element. Gone is the cinder block shed, replaced with a 10,000 SF barn built by a small Army (err I mean Navy) of volunteers. The present is busy, and the future looks bright as Gerardo takes his ideas around thye globe to demonstrate how farms will sustain us in so many ways--with nourishment to community!
