They burst on the scene in 1980 and never looked back. With smash hits like  “Blood and Roses,” “Only a Memory,” “Behind the Wall of Sleep,” and “A Girl Like You," The Smithereens have cultivated an incredibly loyal fanbase, and they are coming to Rams Head On Stage for one show on June 8th! We hopped on the phone with Dennis Diken, one of the founders (and the drummer) to talk about staying power for 4 years, what makes a Smithereens show so special, new projects, and tried to clear up a rumor from a 2012 Rams Head show! Normally, I'd say "have a listen now, and then grab your best friend and get a pair of tickets!" But not today. Put this on pause, get the tickets first (they are selling out) and THEN come back and have a listen! Oxygen is critical for health and sometimes teeth may impede the flow as jawbones have shrunk as we have evolved. A nice smile is a mental boost to a giver or a recipient. She offers a different approach to dentistry. She provides a broad scope of dental and orthodontic techniques that address underlying causes, not just the symptoms. OK, so the title is a little dramatic (and abbreviated). It is the title of a book by local author, Susan Moynihan -- 100 Things to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die! And while some of these types of books are geared to tourists in town for a weekend, this one is not. Sure, it serves that purpose, but no matter if you are here for a few days, or have lived here your entire life, there will be something unexpected and cool you will discover! We all know about Chick & Ruth's Delly, but how many know about the Modern Stone Age Kitchen in Chestertown? That's the advantage of having a book written by an almost lifelong resident. It's a fast and easy read and is the perfect book to have around the house for when your guests say, "What should we do?" Own an Airbnb? Are you a realtor? Maybe you work at a local hotel? This is a must-read! Have a listen! And today, he joins us in advance of his Rams Head Presents show at Maryland Hall on May 17th. Unlike your kids or your dogs, when you call them, they come! I am talking about the 1000+ men and women who make up the Anne Arundel County Fire Department! Sure, the department is an arm of the County Government, but the IAFF Local 1563 is the Union that collectively bargains for their pay and benefits, makes sure that they are staffed safely, and they are getting the support they need. After all, they see some pretty horrid things in the course of their duty! Today, we speak with Joe Addivinola, the long-time President of IAFF Local 1563, to see how the union plays a role. And, it is a lot larger than I imagined! From literacy campaigns to coat drives, our Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedics go all out for the community when they are not working that 24 on 3 off shift! Did you know that the Union owns a four-story building in Millersville? Did you know there is a huge banquet room that can be rented out? Did you know they are a nonprofit, and you can donate directly to support their work? Me either! Joe even lets us know his thoughts about Anne Arundel County Executive Pittman! This was a VERY enlightening conversation and some insight into the men and women who put the wet stuff on the red stuff! Have a listen! You can tell it is spring when the Ospreys return to the Chesapeake Bay. And you can tell it is summer when Bands in the Sand takes over the beach at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation! We took the opportunity to record this podcast in the Merganser Room at the Foundation while watching the Osprey swoop and dive for food as they rebuild their nests. We also took the chance to look out to where THE party will be held on June 14th! Hilary Harp Falk, the President of CBF, joined me along with Billy Sadtler, the GM of Presenting Sponsor, Annapolis Subaru, to talk about the event, but equally important, the why. Annapolis Subaru has been the Presenting Sponsor since the event's inception, and cimulatively, Bands in the Sand has raised more than $5.5 million to help protect and preserve the Bay we all hold so dearly. Education and advocacy are the names of the game, especially in the current environment. Thousands of children (and adults) take part in learning about the ecosystem and the Bay in general each year. Thousands of hours are volunteered every year to keep up the fantastic work CBF has done for 60 years. And helping is not that hard. Volunteer, become a member, donate, or simply be more mindful at home. But as for that party on June 14th.... headlining is none other than Sister Hazel along with Tony Roy and Yawd Lynk(fantastic reggae band) and perpetual crowd favorite Misspent Youth to close out the night! On top of the entertainment included with your ticket is sand between your toes (and after this winter, we ALL need that), along with unlimited food from the Boatyard Bar & Grill, Caliente Grill, Timber Pizza, The Bell House Catering, and Always Ice Cream. Need an oyster fix? Head to The Choptank's Oyster Reef! And to wash it all down, your selection of water, sodas, beers, wines, and ready-to-drink cocktails from Katcef Brothers! It is truly an all-inclusive evening- even down to the free parking and free shuttle to take you to the beach! With Earth Day coming up, it is a perfect time to secure your tickets and celebrate Earth Day by supporting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. All tickets purchased prior to May 1st are discounted to $25! But enough of this... Have a listen! Pets are family! And no one knows that better than Dr. Megan Martorana. After practicing for many years, Dr. Megan decided to put four wheels under her practice and bring the vet to you. Enter Annapolis Area Mobile Vet! Look it's stressful going to a people doctor. Imagine the stress for a beloved cat or dog? Here, get in this crate... drive around for a while and wham-- some guy in a white coat is poking your butt with a needle. Was it a trip to the vet? Or an abduction! Annapolis Area Mobile Vet takes a different approach. Think of her as your old-time primary care physician. She comes to your home (or wherever your loved one may be) and introduces herself and offers a treat and a belly rub to get acquainted. Once comfortable, your dog or cat can be cared for in the place where they are most comfortable. Need a bonus ? Instead of a quick check by the doc, Dr. Megan will spend as long as it takes to make you and your pet comfortable!Makes perfect sense to me! Do you have a four legged family member? Have a listen! NOTE: We met and recorded at Bean Rush Cafe in West Annapolis and it was super busy (yay for them) and super loud (boo for us) so the sound was difficult to edit. My apologies! When you think of timeless composers. Burt Bacharach is at the top of the list. And on April 16th, Todd Rundgren will be bringing a bit of Burt to Maryland Hall in a Rams Head Presents show! We hopped on the phone with Todd this morning to talk about the show. Why Bacharach? What to expect? How he is interpreting the songs (if at all)? And his thoughts on any up and coming composers! ANd Todd is not coming alone. He has Rob Shirakbari who was Bacharach's collaborator and musical director, Wendy Moten from The Voice, and a cast of musicians that have worked with Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and others. April 16th will be a special night for Annapolis and for those unfaniliar with the depth of Bacharach, your evening will be filled with "OMG, I didn;t realize that was HIS song!" Have a listen now, and then grab your best friend and get a pair of tickets! LINKS: Todd Rundgren: What The World Needs Now (Website) Todd Rundgren: What The World Needs Now (Tickets)
