In this episode of the Focused Healthy Family Podcast, Gina and Don sit down with Scott Cramblitt, Financial Services Professional Agent with New York Life Insurance, to unpack one of the most important — and often avoided — conversations families need to have: long-term care planning. As our population ages and longevity increases, more families are facing the emotional, physical, and financial realities of long-term care. Scott helps us understand: What long-term care insurance actually covers The financial risks families face without a plan The rising costs of extended care Common misconceptions about Medicare and long-term care When is the right time to plan The benefits and challenges of different policy options This episode provides clarity, practical education, and encouragement to take action before a crisis forces the conversation. If you want to protect your family, your legacy, and your independence, this is an episode you cannot afford to miss. www.newyorklife.com  C: 443-928-9788 mscramblitt@ft.newyorklife.com Scott's Bio Scott Cramblitt was born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Glen Burnie, just outside of Baltimore City. He attended Virginia Tech from 1997 to 2002, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Economics. In 2005, Scott and his family relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he built an 18-year career in the automotive industry. Throughout his time in automotive leadership, he was known for developing teams, mentoring employees, and helping people grow both professionally and personally. His passion for improving people's lives became a driving force in his career. That passion has now transitioned into the health and insurance space, where Scott helps individuals and families make informed decisions that protect their financial future and long-term wellbeing.  Scott and his wife, Jessica, are proud parents of two sons, Nick and Ben. Outside of work, he enjoys coaching youth sports, especially baseball, playing golf, and spending time with his family and their rescue dogs. At the core of everything Scott does is his mission: to improve people's lives — whether through mentorship, financial education, or helping families prepare for life's unexpected challenges. #FocusedHealthyFamily #LongTermCare #LongTermCareInsurance #AgingWell #FinancialPlanning #CaregiverSupport #FamilyPlanning #RetirementPlanning #ProtectYourLegacy #HealthAndWealth #InsuranceEducation #SeniorCare #FuturePlanning

The Valley Today
Collecting Community: How the MSV Tells the Valley's Story

The Valley Today

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 19, 2025 30:18

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) is more than just a repository of artifacts—it's a vibrant center for community, history, and storytelling. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael sits down with Scott Stroh, the museum's new Executive Director and CEO, and Nick Powers, Curator of Collections, to discuss the MSV's evolving role in Winchester and the wider valley. Scott, less than a year into his role, brings a lifelong passion for history and museums, having previously led George Mason's Gunston Hall. "I am very blessed and fortunate to have been able to take my love of history and museums and make it into a career," he shares. Since arriving in Winchester, Scott has been struck by the community's warmth and the museum's central place in local life. Collecting the Valley's Many Voices Nick Powers, a familiar voice to listeners, explains the museum's unique approach to collecting. The MSV's collection spans 150 miles, from Harper's Ferry to Natural Bridge, and covers a vast array of stories and communities. "We try to collect and exhibit all the communities that make up the valley," Nick says, emphasizing the importance of allowing communities to tell their own stories. The museum's holdings are vast—over 25,000 objects, from miniature chairs to massive furniture, each meticulously cataloged. Recent upgrades to storage ensure both preservation and room for growth, reflecting the MSV's commitment to stewardship and active collecting. History in the Making The conversation highlights how history is not just about the distant past. Nick points out that today's everyday objects could become tomorrow's artifacts, and the museum actively collects contemporary art and stories. "There's always something new coming around the bend," he notes, referencing both changing land use and the valley's vibrant artistic community. Janet and Nick reminisce about estate sales and family heirlooms, underscoring the personal connections that make the MSV's collections so meaningful. Scott echoes this sentiment, describing the museum's artifacts as the "collective identity of the valley," akin to family heirlooms that tell the story of a people and a place. Staff Favorites and Community Connections A highlight of the current MSV experience is the "Inside Job: Staff Favorites from the Valley Collection" exhibition, celebrating the building's 20th anniversary. Staff members selected their favorite objects, with Nick curating complementary pieces. The result is an exhibition that not only showcases artifacts but also the personal stories and evolving perspectives of the museum's team. One standout story is the "Little Beasties" toys, crafted during the Depression by the Shenandoah Community Workers of Bird Haven, Virginia. These toys, along with marketing ephemera, illustrate how valley residents used creativity and local resources to overcome hardship. Sharing the Valley's Treasures The MSV's reputation extends far beyond Winchester. A prized Grandma Moses painting from the collection is currently on loan to the Smithsonian American Art Museum, part of a major retrospective. Nick reveals that Grandma Moses spent nearly two decades in the Shenandoah Valley, a little-known fact that deepens the region's artistic legacy. Looking Forward: Apple Blossom and Revolutionary Valley The museum is gearing up for major exhibitions. In 2027, the MSV will help celebrate the 100th Apple Blossom Festival parade with a community-driven exhibition. Residents are encouraged to submit objects and photographs that tell the story of this beloved event. "We want to acknowledge the very diverse group of people that make this a success year after year," Nick says. Another milestone is the upcoming "Revolutionary Valley" exhibition, opening July 4, 2026, to mark America's 250th anniversary. The show will explore the valley's role in the Revolution and beyond, featuring never-before-seen objects and personal stories, such as the correspondence of James Wood Jr. and the remarkable legal battle of Sarah Strother, a woman born enslaved on the Glen Burnie property who fought for—and won—her freedom. The Power of Storytelling As the conversation draws to a close, Scott emphasizes the museum's mission: "At the end of the day, it's about stories, it's about people, it's about place, and it's about fostering dialogue and understanding." The MSV stands as a testament to the valley's rich, diverse, and ongoing story—inviting all to explore, learn, and connect. For more information on current and upcoming exhibitions, visit msv.org or follow @visitmsv on social media. Memberships are available and make thoughtful gifts for anyone eager to discover the valley's past, present, and future.

Today, we sit down with Amy Gowan, the President and CEO of this quasi-public entity whose sole purpose is to help businesses succeed in Anne Arundel County! We discuss how diverse the county is and how the EDC is involved, from supporting our farmers in South County to a new Town Center in Glen Burnie. We discuss the programs for minority businesses (IVP) and the depth of knowledge and connections within the team. They say that most businesses don't make it five years! So what about one that makes it SEVENTY FIVE years?? Today, we are talking about Ann's Dari-Creme up in Glen Burnie outside of the Marley Station Mall! There's a lot to unpack here, from a start in Coney Island to the change of ownership in 1976, when Howard and Thea Pinsky, along with their partner Joe, purchased the iconic "hot dog stand" based on the number of rolls purchased from a local bread distributor! Sadly, Howard passed away in 2021, but Joe and Howard's family are carrying on the tradition. Today, Joe joins us with Amy, Stacy, MaryLou, and longtime manager Cindy to talk about 75 years of goodness along Ritchie Highway. If there ever was a shining example of not messing with a good thing, Ann's is it. Spoiler, we tried to wrest a few secrets from the team, but failed miserably--so the chili, brand of dogs, and bread will remain a secret! On August 31st, they will kick off their 75th Anniversary all day with giveaways, t-shirts, ice cream, plenty of specials, and a surprise or two. Be sure to stop by and grab a double dog (as I did), or if you dare, a triple dog! What a great group and what a great, true legacy business in Anne Arundel County! Have a listen! In the first half, shamanic energy healer and allopathic physician Dr. Sharon Martin shared insights on self-care and spiritual connection during the holiday season. "We've got to lower our expectations of ourselves and the burdens we put on ourselves-- this idea that you have to buy everything, you have to do everything," she said, advocating for a more centered approach to the holidays, with a focus on forgiveness. Dr. Martin pointed out the need to bring the sacred into daily life, explaining, "We as humans are intimately linked to the energies of nature, of the cosmos," and can access universal consciousness through such things as rituals, music, and meditation. "Sound is a primal energy of the universe," she added, noting that music can align the mind, body, and spirit. When asked about her spiritual practices, she described her connection to "magical beings," particularly dragons, which she views as a creative energy source. "I connect to that force... to ask for assistance, to help understand," Martin detailed. Ultimately, she believes that returning to the heart and embracing gratitude is essential for personal evolution. Regarding manifesting, she emphasized the importance of having a strong belief in the outcome and aligning one's desires with action. She suggested that successful individuals often visualize their goals, tapping into the "big field of pure potential" that connects them to a universal consciousness.-------------In the latter half, exorcist and spiritual deliverance minister Bill Bean shared his harrowing journey through childhood trauma and demonic forces that plagued his family, as well as some of the cases of demonic oppression and possession that he's worked on in recent years. He recounted how his family's struggles began when they moved into a home in Glen Burnie, Maryland, where dark forces had been invited through ancestral rituals. From ages five to twelve, Bean faced regular demonic attacks that caused immense trauma, leading to the destruction of his family. He poignantly remarked, "It's a miracle that I'm here today...the devil was trying to kill me."Recalling a particularly intense case from 2014 at the home of a possessed woman, he confronted a "black hooded being" at least seven feet tall with glowing red eyes and possible folded-in wings. "I shouted at it. I said, by the mighty power of Yahweh, the mighty and holy name, and Yeshua Jesus, in Christ's name, I bind and rebuke you and command you to depart!" He threw a mixture of holy water and oil on it, and "it let out a screech like I have never heard before or since in my life" and then it fled the home.He revealed that such dark entities often enter through a specific portal or location in the home, and that it's crucial to maintain a high frequency and vibration when dealing with them. "When a person's frequency is down...they are wide open and vulnerable for demonic attack," he noted. Bean also discussed his extensive travel to assist those in need, sharing that he's helped people in over 60 countries, including over the phone and video, demonstrating that faith transcends physical distance.

The 2023 holiday season was already in full swing, with many of us busy wrapping gifts and preparing for festive gatherings, when 24-year-old Braonain McGinnis quietly vanished from his home in Glen Burnie, Maryland. Braonain and his mother, Patricia, worked opposite shifts, so it wasn't unusual for them to miss each other except for brief moments when coming or going. Therefore, Patricia did not immediately notice that her son was missing. Initially, she thought Braonain was at work and, later on, that he was simply asleep in his room. However, when Patricia realized Braonain had disappeared, she reported him missing to the Anne Arundel County Police Department, who began investigating his whereabouts on December 21, 2023. Christmas passed with no word from Braonain, and then New Year's came, deepening their concerns. A couple of weeks after Braonain was last seen, his family was shocked to learn that his vehicle had been found abandoned over 2,000 miles away in the mountains of Arizona. Extensive searches ensued, but no trace of Braonain McGinnis was ever found. It has been nearly a year since Braonain vanished, and his loved ones have worked tirelessly to try to piece together the clues that he left behind. If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Braonain McGinnis, please call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 928-774-4523 or 1-800-338-7888 or Silent Witness at 928-774-6111. Needless to say, we know each other very well by now!    In today's episode, we share eight key factors that have helped us develop and maintain a close relationship in our 20 years of working together.   Aubrey Edwards is the CEO of Bright Beginning Children's Learning Center. She is consistently completing professional development hours and is currently taking online courses at Anne Arundel Community College to further her education. Aubrey has earned her Teacher Certification, Positive Education Certification, Coaching & Mentoring Certification, and Directors of Operations Certification.    She started with BBCLC when they first opened their doors in September of 2004 and has a total of 24 years of experience working in Early Education. Aubrey has always been passionate about working with children and making a difference in every child's life that walks through BBCLC's doors. Her mission has always been to create a safe, nurturing and fun environment for all children to learn and grow.    Aubrey currently resides in Glen Burnie, Maryland, with her two boys, Cruz (age 9) and Enzo (age 3). They love trying new experiences, spending as much time outside, and going out to eat.   Topics covered in this episode include: How Aubrey and I started working together over 20 years ago The key to creating effective communication Building respect in new or developing relationships   If you want successful long-term relationships, be sure to tune in!   Show notes available at www.leadinglady-coaching.com/podcast   Resources Mentioned:  Book a call with me: https://leadinglady-coaching.com/work-with-me/ For more information on Bright Beginning Children's Learning Center, check out their links: Website: https://bright-beginning.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bright.beginning867 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bbclc Contact Aubrey: a.edwards@bright-beginning.com   Have you joined the Leading Ladies Facebook Group yet?!
