Carolyn was named Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year by Music Row magazine in 2000 and landed a record deal of her own with the Arista Nashville label. Her self-produced debut, Room with a View, hit the Top 10 in the US and earned Gold status in Canada. The singles "Complicated“ and "I Don't Want You to Go“ were both Top 10 hits in the US. Episode 278: Suzy Bogguss started playing and performing on a hand-me-down guitar from her sister in small-town Illinois. After a few years making a living out west playing at ski lodges, she moved to Nashville, where she carved out a special place in 1990s country music. Amid a time of diversity and vibrancy in the format, her sweet, folky voice took flight when she found the right songs, including the career-makers “Someday Soon” and “Outbound Plane.” She's toured steadily ever since, though recordings have been selective since 2000. During the pandemic though, she took on her first album of new material with last fall's Prayin' For Sunshine, the first where she'd written all of the songs. In this hour, we cover every key stage of this award-winning career.

ArTEEtude is West Cork´s first art, fashion and design podcast created and produced by Detlef Schlich. Schlich operates with his podcast cross-sectorally. For him a visual artist has to think transversely instead just enjoying the luxury of being the antagonist. To drive the narrative and to be a protagonist, he will dive and discover with us into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. Michael Elliott is the author of the first-ever biography of songwriting legend John Hiatt. Elliott is a contributor to the pioneering roots music authority No Depression. His music writing has also appeared in PopMatters, Albumism, Americana UK, and The Bitter Southerner. Michael spent close to thirty years in radio as operations manager, music director, program director, and disc jockey in a variety of formats. He has interviewed and produced profiles on musicians as diverse as Isaac Hayes, Charlie Daniels, Delbert McClinton, Johnny Rivers, and Little Richard. He lives in Raleigh, NC where he and his wife, Elizabeth, volunteer for the NC Reading Service, a nonprofit radio service that delivers content to the blind and visually impaired. Elliot´s biography about Hiatt is based on Elliott's multiple extensive and deeply personal interviews with Hiatt as well as his collaborators and contemporaries, including Rosanne Cash, Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, and many others, Have a Little Faith is the journey through the musical landscape of the 1960s through today that places Hiatt's long career in context with the glossy pop, college-alternative, mainstream country, and heartland rock of the last half-century. A variety of artists in multiple genres have covered his songs, including Aaron Neville, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Chaka Khan, Albert Lee, Dave Edmunds, Delbert McClinton, Desert Rose Band, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Iggy Pop, I'm with Her, Jeff Healey, Jewel, Jimmy Buffett, Joan Baez, Joe Bonamassa, Joe Cocker, Keith Urban, Linda Ronstadt, Mandy Moore, Maria Muldaur, Nick Lowe, Paula Abdul, Paulini, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Ry Cooder, Suzy Bogguss, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, The Searchers, Three Dog Night, Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel, and Willy DeVille. Suzy Bogguss calls in. Six of her songs were Top 10 hits, three albums were certified gold, and one album received a platinum certification. She won Top New Female Vocalist from the Academy of Country Music and the Horizon Award from the Country Music Association.www.suzybogguss.com
This month's guest, Matraca Berg, grew up in a musical family. Her mother Icee Berg (yep, real name!) was a songwriter and session singer who at first wasn't crazy that her daughter wanted a career in country music but later became her best teacher. Her stepfather, Dave Kirby, was a songwriter whose credits include the Gene Watson classic I've Got Memories to Burn and Charlie Pride's Is Anybody Goin to San Antone. The family lived in Nashville and often hosted parties featuring writers and singers. So, it stands to reason that being around that kind of environment would kinda rub off on a person. But in Matraca's case, it was more than just a smudge; she was gifted the talent- and the drive- to have over 50 of her songs recorded, including several that helped female artists to dominate country music in the 1990s like they have never before... or since. She is a CMA and ACM-winning 2008 Nashville Songwriting Hall of Fame inductee who's quick to give credit to her co-writers, she's married to Jeff Hanna of the legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and she's a pretty great solo artist too. Bryan hosts this episode that highlights how those who do not have Parkinson's can make an incredible impact on the lives of those afflicted with this horrible disease. Joining Bryan is the wife of legendary country songwriter Freddy Powers and the author of the book "The Spree of '83: The Life and Times of Freddy Powers", Jake Brown. If you haven't heard of Freddy Powers, you may have heard of Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, or George Jones. Freddie Powers was the prolific songwriter responsible for more than 10 number one hits for Merle Haggard. Powers also wrote songs cut by Ray Charles, Stoney LaRue, Suzy Bogguss, and Big & Rich. Freddy was diagnosed with Parkinson's. However, he refused to let P.D. define him. Powers thrived from the support of his wife Catherine to those such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Tanya Tucker, John Rich / Big and Rich, Mary Sarah, and Pauline Reese. Listen as Catherine and Jake recount how Freddy continued to invest in the lives of others. Even deep into the progression of Parkinson's, Freddy kept his sense of humor while inviting others into his life. He passed away in 2016. The musician founded the Freddy Powers Parkinson Organization to raise funds for research into the disease. Add your experience and suggestions to the conversation in this Parkinson's podcast. Aledo, Illinois-native, ACM, CMA award winning country music start Suzy Bogguss will play a show in Carthage, Illinois on Saturday, June 12th. She chatted with AM 1330 WRAM Morning Show co-host Shawn Temple about what she's been up to since the Covid-19 pandemic shut down her live shows early in 2020, growing up in Aledo and what it means to do what you love for a career that spans nearly five decades.
Nanci Griffith got an early start on her path to performing and songwriting. At the age of 6 she began to write songs, thinking of it as “part of the process of learning how to play guitar.” While she doesn’t remember many of her earliest songs, she does recall that “the first original song my mother commented on…was a song about Timothy Leary.” Then at the age of 14, when a campfire turn at the Kerrville Folk Festival caught the ear of singer-songwriter Tom Russell, she was on her way. Having recorded 18 albums and performed concerts all over the world, it’s safe to say that she’s never looked back. Griffith's career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, Folk, and what she terms "folkabilly." Griffith won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. This album features Griffith covering the songs of artists who are her major influences. One of her better-known songs is "From a Distance" by Julie Gold, although Bette Midler's version achieved greater commercial success. Similarly, other artists have occasionally achieved greater success with Griffith's songs than Griffith herself. For example, Kathy Mattea had a country music top five hit with a 1986 cover of Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime," and Suzy Bogguss had one of her largest hits with Griffith's and Tom Russell's "Outbound Plane." First broadcast in 1994, Tent Show Radio is a one-hour public radio program created from the best live recordings from acclaimed musical acts who grace the Big Top Chautauqua stage each summer in beautiful Bayfield, WI. During intermission, host Michael Perry spins a story “from the backstage dressing room, with the one lonely little light bulb burning." Topics range from Mike’s battles with trees, to the behavior of rogue chickens, to the search for hope while stoking a wood stove in the darkness. Running 52 weeks a year, Tent Show Radio is broadcast on 31 listener supported radio stations across 6 states and on most podcast streaming platforms. "Tent Show Radio" is also available for streaming at www.tentshowradio.org. Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua was founded in 1986. The first show under canvas was the Nelson-Ferris Concert Company Production Riding the Wind, the story of Bayfield and Madeline Island. Since then Big Top has welcomed over 700,000 patrons to the grounds for 2,000+ concerts and shows and countless lectures, workshops and other unique events. In addition to the action on the tent grounds, Big Top has also broadcast its performances over the public radio airwaves since 1994 through Tent Show Radio, bringing Big Top concerts into living rooms across the country and around the world via internet streaming and podcasts. Our resident band, the Blue Canvas Orchestra, also tours to theaters and schools throughout the Upper Midwest. Over the course of 30 years we’ve touched millions of lives and created millions of memories with our eclectic blend of excellent musical offerings.
Billy talks with 2020 Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame Nominee Shawn Camp. They discuss Shawn moving to Nashville in 1987 to play fiddle for The Osbourne Brothers, writing “Two Pina Coladas” for Garth Brooks (which became a #1 hit), the Grammy and IBMA winning band, the Earls of Leicester, and playing John Prine’s Christmas Parties in Nashville with The Bring The Whole Damn Family Band. More about Shawn Camp Darrell DeShawn "Shawn" Camp (born August 29, 1966 in Perryville, Arkansas) is an American musician who performs country and Americana music. Originally signed to Reprise Records in 1993 as a recording artist, Camp charted two minor singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts that year. Since then, he has found success as a songwriter, having co-written hit singles for many country music artists, including Garth Brooks, Josh Turner, Brooks & Dunn, and Blake Shelton, although he continues to record his own material as well. Camp was raised in Perryville, Arkansas by a musical family. In 1987, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee and worked in the backing bands of such acts as The Grand Priarie Boys, Osborne Brothers, Alan Jackson, Suzy Bogguss and Trisha Yearwood. In 1991, he was signed to Reprise Records, with two minor Top 40 singles charting in 1993. He later left the label over creative differences, but continued to write songs for other artists. Camp's first Number One as a songwriter came in early 1998, when Garth Brooks reached the top of the Billboard country charts with "Two Piña Coladas", a song co-written by Camp. Later that same year, Brooks & Dunn also reached Number One with "How Long Gone", another Camp co-write. Camp released a second album, titled Lucky Silver Dollar, in 2001. In 2006, he was nominated as Songwriter of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music; also, Billboard ranked him #10 on their 2006 list of Hot Country Songwriters. The same year, two songs co-written by Camp entered the country charts: "Nobody But Me" by Blake Shelton, and "Would You Go with Me" by Josh Turner, which peaked at No. 4 and No. 1, respectively, on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs charts. Camp also co-wrote Turner's 2007 single "Firecracker" and George Strait's 2008 single "River of Love".
The Treachery of AG Barr. Biggest Brutus in all the Swamp. Peter Navarro describes the sordid details of the "Deep State Coup" with Maria Bartiromo. Yes, Bill Barr was actually "fast-tracking" the Biden Executive Orders. Rule By Deception. Meanwhile, our notes on "Battered Conservative Syndrome." After marveling at Liz Cheney's interview this morning with Chris Wallace, Sundance at the Conservative Treehouse concludes the "GOP is NOT recoverable." We must face the reality that our GOP Leaders simply despise their own voters. A Third Party is required. Time now for the acceptance phase, and to end this absurd cycle of abuse. A matter of basic self-respect for GOP Voters. Plus, Lee Smith on "The Thirty Tyrants." A formidable sketch of America's Pro-China Oligarchs and their efforts to "destroy their own countrymen." Fortunately, if historical precedent is any guide, their rule will not last long. Times Like These. Hard Hat and a Hammer. With Listener Calls & Music via Alan Jackson and the Foo Fighters. The Suzy Bogguss story starts in the small town of Aledo, Illinois, where she grew up listening to her dad's Merle Haggard 8-tracks. In 1985, she got a big break when she sang at Silver Dollar City, a Nashville amusement park that Dolly Parton turned into Dollywood the next year. With Parton's endorsement, she became a featured performer at the park and earned a record deal.Bogguss is more of a song interpreter than a songwriter - the title track of her 1989 debut album Somewhere Between is a Haggard cover - but she did co-write one of her biggest hits: "Hey Cinderella," an unconventional take on the famous fairy tale.Speaking from her home in Franklin, Tennessee, Bogguss tells the "Hey Cinderella" story, talks about her Dollywood days, and performs her song "Letting Go."https://www.suzybogguss.com/https://www.songfacts.com/https://www.facebook.com/songfactshttps://twitter.com/Songfactshttp://pantheonpodcasts.com/https://twitter.com/pantheonpodsHosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanaganhttps://twitter.com/ofe1818https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.

My guest today is Pat Bergeson. Pat is an amazing guitarist, a natural who is at ease with virtually any style. His credits include Lyle Lovett, Shelby Lynne, Suzy Bogguss, Butch Trucks and many, many more. As Pat will tell you though, the one that is probably the game changer for him is the phone call he got from Chet Atkins that changed his life and career. Not only a great guitarist, Pat is also a ridiculously great harmonica player. He plays chromatic harp on a diatonic harp, not an easy feat…this enables him to convert his knowledge of jazz harmony and killer guitar chops onto another instrument. You'll hear this for yourself. Pat has his own solo records out to- check em out- the most recent one being “Hippy Dance”- you are listening to the title track right now. He also has plays duets with his wife, jazz singer Annie Sellick and they occasionally tour with Tommy Emmanuel. Catch em if you can you'll love it. I'm so glad Pat was in town and available the day I called him up to do this. He's a great guy and fun hang and goes without saying an incredible guitar player. Throughout the interiew there are a few tunes we play together and you can hear Pat panned slightly right and myself on the left. Hope you enjoy! Recorded at Pat's house, Nashville, TN Feb 2018 Pat's website for more info, shows etc... http://patbergeson.com/ Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
