Hey, y'all! Welcome to the Gary Church Podcast . . . from Gary Church, here in Wheaton, IL. This is our last episode of the Gary Church Podcast and we want to thank all our subscribers and listeners over the last 4 years. We began this ministry as a way to reach out to folks during COVID. As our weekly live-streaming services have taken root and grown (which can be found at www.garychurch.org), the need for this podcast has ended. We want to especially thank Tony Venezia and Deb Evans for all their hard work on this project, as well as those generous donors who funded the ministry, but would rather not be named. We thought it fitting to end with the glory of the resurrection, our true end as Christians! May those who have not discovered him yet come to find Christ as Lord and Savior through these episodes, and those who follow Christ already be strengthened in their faith. This is the scripture and sermon from March 31, 2024- the First Sunday of Easter . . . Resurrection of the Lord Sunday!  Our scripture is read by Cindy Plate (00:05) and the sermon by Rev. Dr. Chris Pierson is entitled "Whom Are You Looking For?" (02:44). At Gary Church our mission through Christ is to grow in joyful faith and serve all in love!  John 20:1-18 Revised Common Lectionary

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

What difference does Easter make for you in how you live your life? Does it make any difference at all?For me Easter is not so much about getting into heaven as it is an affirmation by God of all Jesus said and did; is a statement of God’s utter and profound commitment to this world and all who live in it; and an invitation to live in anticipation of completion of that.Importantly, Easter is not the end of the story in John, it is one step – life and ministry of Jesus; denial and betrayal, crucifixion, resurrection and appearance to Mary, ascension and return, resurrection appearance to other disciples, giving of Spirit to those disciples… the story goes on. So what next for us?The notes for this sermon can be found here

Jesus was raised from the dead while it was still night. God’s work of resurrection gets underway in the darkness. Even now the risen Christ is making his way towards us in the gloom, and we will hear his loving voice calling our name.

This morning I would like to retrace the details of the death, burial, & resurrection of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Mary Magdalene. Mary was a devoted disciple of Christ after He delivered her from demonic possession & saved her.  From Jesus' ministry, to the cross, & then to the grave, Mary Magdalene stood faithfully by Jesus' side & witnessed His passion first hand. Since she was the first follower of Christ to see the Lord alive & talk with Him after He arose from death, certainly her experience is worthy of careful examination. Now, Mary did not start out the first Easter Sunday morning very well. But before the day was over, she had experienced a resurrection of hope in the Risen Savior.
