The St. Louis comedy scene is a busy one. Just about any night of the week, you can catch local comedians honing their sets at open-mic night, improvising madly on stage with a troupe of their closest friends or battling each other with wit and good humor as local drunks cheer. For the past three years, a three-day comedy festival has brought those disparate elements together. The Flyover Comedy Festival launched in 2017 and returns to the city’s Grove neighborhood beginning this Thursday (Nov. 7). It’s a showcase for local talent in the scene and also a chance for big names to show off their best stuff. In this segment, St. Louis on the Air host Sarah Fenske and co-founder Zach Gzehoviak discuss the festival with local comedians Kenny Kinds and Tina Dybal.
This is our 100th podcast episode. It features 9 stories by storytelling MVP Rob T. It is over 4 hours long. On the couch during these stories were Jeremy Hellwig, Kenny Kinds, Amy Milton, Kris Wernowsky, Andrew Mihalevich, Bobby Jaycox, Stryker, Spurlock, Christian Lawrence, and Zach Stovall. The first two stories are from when our sound was not as good. So, if that bothers you, just skip ahead. 7 out of 9 stories sound great. Thanks for listening for 100 episodes. Here's to a couple hundred more.
This week we present two stories from people who left home for university and discovered something unexpected. Part 1: After Kenny Kinds begins lying to his parents about his grades, he has to question why he is in engineering school in the first place. Part 2: After a tragedy, Brianna Shaughnessy discovers a different way to heal at the Great Barrier Reef. Kenny Kinds is an application developer/comedian and yes, those two things pair together nicely. He also co-hosts the monthly storytelling show Sorry Please Continue at The Heavy Anchor in St. Louis. Brianna Shaughnessy is a PhD Student in Environmental Biology at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Prior to joining Jarrett Byrnes' lab as a Coasts and Communities Fellow, she completed a Master's of Professional Science through Northeastern University's Three Seas Program. Her past research focussed on surveying kelp forests with the purpose of assessing the impacts of global change on such critical ecosystems. As a native of Cape Cod, MA, an integral part of Brianna's upbringing involved constantly questioning and developing a deep respect for coastal communities. Her current research focusses on the development of sustainable fisheries practices in hopes of acting as liaison between the community that raised her and the scientists aiming to understand and protect it. SPC makes its second trip to what is quickly becoming one of our favorite storytelling destinations. For our latest stop in Columbus, we decided to tackle our storytellers’ college experience in what we dubbed The Ohio State Edition. Whiskey Bear Comedy head honcho and comedy festival favorite Dustin Meadows tells a ridiculous story about his time in school where he majored in pop culture and how a homework assignment led to hitting a friend with his car. Hashtag Comedy’s Sarah Storer tells an insanely entertaining cautionary tale about why you should never fall in love in Bible school. Spoiler alert, there’s probably some dry humping. Comedian Pat Deering tells an unusual story about a prank gone awry and how a lost pocket knife almost got him into a heap of trouble. Columbus storyteller and Babe to Know Christine Hovarth tells a very, er, timely story about taking Plan B. This show was the second stop on our 2017 Midwestern tour and includes all of the SPC staff including Kenny Kinds, Tim Cornett, Jeremy Hellwig and Kris Wernowsky..

The History... Ever since there was electricity in the form of airwaves, the world has sought to communicate and project thoughts, feelings, and vibrations, with the hope of a worthy recipient on the opposite end to absorb the message. Conventional radio, originally broadcasted via towers and transmitters, became a current which could be felt and interpreted with wire antennae. This medium, often commercially driven, lucrative, and at times corrupt in practice saw its ascent, peak, and the beginning of its decline all during the 20th century. Then… the current went underground. The desire and need to be free of a federally controlled, and caste system-like monopoly gave birth to an assortment of alternative means for one to be heard. The advent of coaxial cable, fiber optics, and data flowing through phone lines revolutionized the way information, and more importantly, music… was sent and received. The Soul made a breakthrough. The Future… Satellite, cable and now Internet radio, while different in their applications, yet similar in intent, have slain the all-encompassing ogre and put the power back into the hands of the people it was meant to serve. YOU! KNOC Radio is the natural progression and brainchild of the people. KNOC (Keep Nourishing Our Communities) has emerged from the rubble to provide a voice for the unheard. Encouragement of individual expression and attentiveness to one’s Soul is the model for the next millennium through quality programs on and offline, artistic endeavors and audio on demand. A nu standard in radio has arrived. My first internet based radio show was called "Eklektika", co-hosted with comedian/filmmaker Kenny Kinds, and afterwards there was "Knocturnal Sunshine", a ray of light in the night, featuring Soul, Acid Jazz, Lounge and more. I buried the show after the passing of a dear friend at the hands of the police, and it is now reborn, infused with healing energy to make the world a better place from my stance of artivism. Indulge in this mix as it blurs genres, color lines, and periods in time....some new, some olde, an exploration at its best. No track list will be put up, if you like a song, Shazzam it, then buy it. That is all...enjoy. (Spoiler alert: Jose James, Fertile Ground, Roni Size, Marc Cary, and a couple of songs regarding the act of kissing all appear here...)
This is the first episode of Comedy vs Everything, featuring the always curmudgeonly and hilarious Kenney Kinds (@Steelyken). We thought it went terribly, partly because of our idiotic seating arrangement but mostly because our guest kept insisting how bad it was. Turns out, it's pretty funny. Topics include: movies; old people falling off ladders. Shout out to @JMooreComic and @EricBrownSucks for submitting bad jokes for Guess the Punchline. If you want to drink along, drink on: Us saying we are doing poorly. Mention of people you don't know. Ladder. Any other suggested rules for the drinking game? Tell @CvEpodcast
