Bert Mizusawa is a retired major general in the United States Army, serving in the Army from 1979 to 2015. Mizusawa also served in the United States Senate as a professional staff member and as a Senior Executive in the Pentagon, making him one of only a handful of individuals to serve at flag rank in the military as well as in both the legislative and executive branches. Mizusawa is also an attorney and is admitted to the bars of New York, the District of Columbia, Virginia and the United States Supreme Court. Awards: Distinguished Service Medal Silver Star Defense Superior Service Medal Legion of Merit Bronze Star Medal Combat Infantryman Master Parachutist Ranger Air Assault Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge Humanitarian Service Medal 1983 Soviet defector incident Mizusawa led the Joint Security Force in a historic firefight against North Korean forces. Mizusawa was awarded the Silver Star for “exceptional valor and gallantry in action” while serving as the Commander of the Joint Security Force (JSF) Company at Panmunjom, Korea on 22 and 23 November 1984. His citation reads “In reaction to thirty attacking North Korean soldiers in pursuit of a Soviet defector, Captain Mizusawa's outstanding leadership and aggressive actions in leading his company while under fire were instrumental in defeating the enemy. Additionally, he personally led the defector to safety while under fire and deliberately, at great risk to himself, exposed himself to the enemy in front of his own troops to ensure the success of his company's combat action. Throughout the intense firefight, Captain Mizusawa displayed a complete disregard for his own personal safety while accomplishing his mission.” Some have credited the successful firefight and rescue of the Soviet defector, which unexpectedly did not result in a Soviet demarche, for convincing President Reagan to hold firm in his negotiations with the Soviet Union, which ultimately led to the end of the Cold War. Meritorious Civilian Service Award

Andrew Nunn is a mentalist who explores how perception, pressure, and hidden assumptions shape our decision-making. Rather than offering generic mindset advice, Andy shows how intelligent people get fooled by their own thinking — often in real time. On stage as a behavioural keynote speaker, through what seems to be live mind-reading and behavioural insight, Andy is able to demonstrate how failure reshapes belief, how perception distorts reality, and how the stories in our heads quietly shape what we do. In his own life, he was able to move from a place of addiction to running some of the world's most challenging ultramarathons. Andy doesn't just teach mindset; he shows us how we fall for constructs and how our minds and perceptions actually work.    LINKS   Andy's website www.andrewnunn.com   The Mojo Sessions website www.themojosessions.com   The Mojo Sessions on Patreon www.patreon.com/TheMojoSessions Full transcripts of the show (plus time codes) are available on Patreon.   The Mojo Sessions on Facebook www.facebook.com/TheMojoSessions   Gary on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/gary-bertwistle   Gary on Twitter www.twitter.com/GaryBertwistle   The Mojo Sessions on Instagram www.instagram.com/themojosessions   If you like what you hear, we'd be grateful for a review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Happy listening!   © 2026 Gary Bertwistle.  All Rights Reserved.

He's a mentalist turned keynote speaker who knows how to captivate an audience. In this episode, Andy and I talk about what it really takes to evolve from entertaining an audience to transforming them.Because getting laughs, applause, and “that was amazing!” is one thing… but creating a keynote that actually changes how people think and act is a completely different skill.Andy shares his journey from performing magic and mentalism to working together to build a thought leadership keynote, including what surprised him, what challenged him, and what finally clicked. We also get into the behind-the-scenes of shaping a talk that's not just engaging, but structured, clear, and impactful (and yes, still includes some mind-blowing moments). If you've ever wondered how to go from being “good on stage” to being truly bookable as a keynote speaker, this conversation will give you a whole new perspective.Andy and I talk about:Why being entertaining isn't enough—and what audiences actually need from a keynoteThe biggest mindset shift from performer to thought leaderHow to turn audience engagement into meaningful transformationWhat it takes to structure a keynote that works at 30, 45, or 60 minutesThe role of storytelling and personal experience in building a powerful talk About My Guest: Andrew (Andy) Nunn is a sought-after speaker for leading organisations including Google, Amazon, SAP, Sony, and Ralph Lauren, where he delivers interactive keynotes that spark self-awareness, connection, and change. S7 Ep17: The long shadow of British rule: India's colonial legacy

VoxDev Talks

Eighty years after Indian independence, the economic fingerprint of British colonial rule is still visible at the district level. Two institutions in particular left scars: whether a district was governed directly by British administrators or by one of India's roughly 680 Indian princes, and what kind of land tax arrangement the British put in place. For example, by 1991, directly ruled districts had nine percentage points fewer middle schools and a 20-percentage-point lower probability of having a road than areas under indirect rule. The question was whether those gaps would eventually close.Lakshmi Iyer of the University of Notre Dame tells Tim Phillips that by 2011 infrastructure gaps had closed completely. Targeted post-independence programmes, including the Minimum Needs Program of the 1970s and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan of 2001, pushed schools, health centres, and roads towards underserved districts. The picture for land tenure is mixed. Areas that historically had landlord-based systems are still 17% behind non-landlord areas in wheat yields, and the gap in fertiliser use has widened rather than narrowed. One reason, the policy response was a universal subsidy rather than being specifically aimed at places that had fallen behind. So colonial legacies can be erased, but only by policies designed to reach the places that were left behind. When policies have equalisation built in, historical gaps disappear. When they do not, the gaps persist. The research behind this episode:Iyer, Lakshmi and Coleson Weir. 2025. "History, Institutions, and Economic Performance: The Legacy of Colonial Land Tenure Systems in India." American Economic Review 95 (4). The Killing Fields (1984), directed by Roland Joffe, depicts the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia and the genocide that followed, which resulted in the death of approximately 2-3 million people. The film is based on the experiences of New York Times journalist Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterson) and Cambodian journalist Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor). It provides a haunting depiction of mass violence as well as a moving story about these two colleagues and friends. In the wake of the 50th anniversary of the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia, it is worth revisiting a film that is as powerful and relevant today as when it was released.Timestamps:0:00      Introduction2:16       The Khmer Rouge and Year Zero6:04      The U.S. contribution to the Cambodian genocide8:14        The role of journalists in Cambodia and conflict zones17:34      The treatment of journalists under international law18:46     The killing fields and the film's impact24:08    Sydney Schanberg and Dith Pran, and journalistic ethics34:10     The ECCC and transitional justice in Cambodia42:44     Journalists and international criminal proceedings47:50     Haing Ngor and his tragic fate53:26     Civil society endeavors to bring history to life55:21      The fall of Phnom Penh 59:03    The failed attempt to get Dith Pran out1:00:15  The risks facing journalists today Further reading:  Becker, Elizabeth, When the War Was Over: Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge Revolution (1988)Brown, Mark, “Genocide Films, Public Criminology, Collective Memory,” 53 (6) The British Journal of Criminology (2013)   Chandler, David P., The Pol Pot Regime (1991)Kiernan, Ben, Genocide in Cambodia (Revised ed. 2008) Ngor, Haing (with Warner, Roger), Survival in the Killing Fields (1987)Nunn, Nora, "Rose-Colored Genocide: Hollywood, Harmonizing Narratives, and the Cinematic Legacy,” 14(2) Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal 65 (2020)Schanberg, Sydney H., The Death and Life of Dith Pran (1985)Shawcross, William, Sideshow (1979) Law on Film is created and produced by Jonathan Hafetz.
