IM Willy Hendriks is a Netherlands based chess trainer, and an author of three books: Move First Think Later ( 2012 ECF Book of the Year), On the Origin of Good Moves, and his new book, Ink War: Romanticism vs. Modernity in Chess. Ink War is an entertaining and informative look at the first World Championship Match between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort. As we discuss the two players had some common biographical traits, but were bitter rivals away from the board. Willy explains why the job of a chess professional was harder in those days, and shares some common misconceptions about the contributions that each player made to the advancement of chess. Since Willy is an accomplished player, trainer and improver, we also discuss Willy's chess improvement philosophy, his own OTB game, and a few of his favorite chess books. The Lakers made the first notable trade of tradin' season Monday, acquiring Washington forward Rui Hachimura for three second round draft picks, plus guard Kendrick Nunn. We covered a lot of what Hachimura brings to the table in a special bonus episode of the podcast Monday afternoon, but to summarize: Hachimura brings much more balance to the rotation, providing a wing who can score and much needed size in the place of a guard (Nunn) who won't play once Lonnie Walker and Austin Reaves return. The price to acquire Hachimura was pretty low for a team that has multiple second-round picks. Hachimura has been disappointing in Washington, but that franchise has been very unstable and not very competitive on the floor, which can definitely limit a young player's development. In LA, Hachimura won't have the pressure of bein ga lottery pick. he's just a dude here to play a role. Context matters. LeBron makes a lot of guys better, if they can figure out how to play with him. Now, it's a chance to look at what the trade means for the Lakers going forward, and what it implies about Rob Pelinka's strategy going forward. Hachimura is a restricted free agent this summer, and ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports the Lakers made this deal with the intention of keeping Hachimura around. That would require a new contract, which would eat into the $30 or so million the Lakers are slated to have available to them this offseason. It means the Lakers would be looking to fill out the roster around Anthony Davis and James, rather than taking a "big swing" at a star. Important developments, at least in theory. Meanwhile, Tuesday is Lakers vs. Clippers, and on to preview this very, very important game between two teams that have struggled this season to meet expectations and are only a couple games apart in the standings is Darian Vaziri. Host of Locked on Clippers, plus DimeDropper on YouTube, he helps get everyone up to speed on what's going on with the Clippers, how the Hachimura trade could impact the W.C. playoff race, whether the Clippers are likely to get the games they need out of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George... ...and what to watch in tonight's game. With the Lakers showing real signs of life through major adversity following the disastrous 2-10 start, fans (and players, surely) have been hoping the front office would come through with some help for a roster of game-but-limited guys? For LeBron James, who has been balling out to keep the team afloat in the absence of Anthony Davis? Especially now that Davis could be back over the next week or so? Monday, the Lakers pulled the trigger, reportedly agreeing to send Kendrick Nunn and three second round picks to the Washington Wizards for forward Rui Hachimura, the 9th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Is it a good deal? One that can move the needle for the Lakers as they try to climb back into the playoff race? Well, if nothing else, it's a good balancing of the roster. The Lakers need size and athleticism up front (with some scoring punch) much more than they need Nunn, especially once Austin Reaves and Lonnie Walker IV are healthy and back. Hachimura is a restricted free agent following this season, so the deal also gives the Lakers control over a young player who has shown signs of real talent amidst availability and consistency issues in Washington. The big thing for the Lakers: In LA, Hachimura doesn't arrive with the expectations of a lottery pick. He's just a dude they acquired with some second round picks and a very expendable player. If the Lakers can create a role for him, accentuate what he does well and hide what he doesn't? They'll have made a great deal. Hachimura, physically at least, is exactly what you look for in a modern NBA forward. It's just never quite translated on either side of the floor. So what's next? As we start 2023, we will be moving ahead without Chuck Nunn as our audio guy; We're all moving on and up. It's time to ask these baby birds to fly the nest to new, thrilling, higher, feats. As Chuck would say and did say, "find what you can't not."... and then go after that. Thank you so much Chuck! You're a forever friend and I'm eternally grateful for all that you've given me. Jen's really amazing too and both Rico and I are blessed by your friendship. ~Hosts: Amy Nicholls & Rico Illiano (Rico's our intro and exit man) ~Sound Design by: Amy Nicholls who owes (Sound Wizard) Chuck Nunn (@djchucknunn) for Intros and Exits and for his years of audio support that was the foundation of this podcast. ~New Intro and Exit Music by Chuck Nunn. Well, there was a lot of things that we could have called Part 2 with Chuck Nunn, but overall, this episode really explores nuance and specifics to the job of either Performance, Learning, DJing or Tattooing, that may or may not, be so evident. Chuck shares all that led him to being a DJ and we hear together, how Chuck came to working on The Apprenticeship Diaries. Lots of respect goes to Chuck in this episode as he discusses the hard knocks to getting to where he is today. Again, endless thanks to our Nunn Chuck. Just like the bassist in a band, we really need him. What better way to start the New Year than to FINALLY spotlight the man behind the podcast, trying ever so much to make this tech-ignorant band of podcast-newbs, sound good... Chuck Nunn?!!! In this, we'll hear about Chuck's beginnings and how he found himself working and loving, the life of a wedding DJ. This is a really cool chat as Amy tries to draw as many parallels to the world of tattooing to that of a DJ. No matter what Amy's able to comprehend, the point is that Chuck is the kind of guy who follows his passions; He doesn't make excuses as to why he can't, rather, he seeks to walk into the unknown and help his friends along the way. We loved starting 2023 out with you Chuck (and Jen too). Thank you! The Lakers cruised past the Atlanta Hawks in a full-team effort. Despite being short-handed, LA had multiple players step up, like Dennis Schroder, Thomas Bryant, Max Christie and more. Kendrick Nunn stole the show with his best performance as a Laker, dropping 23 points while LeBron had 25 and Westbrook 18. Trevor Lane and Sean Davis break down the win and what it means for the Lakers on the trade market... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The day started poorly for the Lakers, who announced that Austin Reaves (hamstring) and Lonnie Walker IV (knee) will miss the next two weeks (at least), and meanwhile Troy Brown (quad) wouldn't be able to play Friday against the Hawks at Crypto. The Lakers were down so many bodies they signed veteran SG/SF Sterling Brown (not the actor), and had him suit up. So would the Lakers suffer on the court, giving back a game after a fantastic win Wednesday over Miami? Absolutely not! LeBron James was again excellent, but he had tons of help. Dennis Schröder stayed hot, scoring 21 points. Thomas Bryant was 8-12 from the floor, and had 13 rebounds. Russell Westbrook was strong, and Kendrick Nunn (remember him?) had easily his best game as a Laker. 23 points in just under 27 minutes. With so many guys on the shelf, Nunn will get more minutes now out of necessity, and doesn't need to look over his shoulder quite as much. Maybe that's the thing that can help him reach the form that prompted the Lakers to sign him, and podcast hosts to believe he could/would be a serious contributor? It would be a nice silver lining to the injuries Nunn used this time to find his form, and became a useful player heading into the second half of the season. We'll see what happens in Sacramento Saturday night, but the Lakers have quietly gone 16-11 since the 2-10 start. Guys are playing well around James. The light at the end of the tunnel maybe, just maybe, is actually light, not a train. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Given how the Lakers handled Kendrick Nunn's injury last year, Anthony is curious if they're trying a version of that now with Anthony Davis. Then, as the Lakers are pretty depressing right now, he chooses instead to thank all of you for the support you've given us this year, as well as the team who makes this channel what it is. December 15th is approaching fast. That's the day the NBA's trade market opens up wider, as players (like Patrick Beverley) who signed contracts last summer can be traded. So what could be coming for the Lakers? It's fairly common knowledge that the Lakers would be willing to package Kendrick Nunn with Beverley in an effort to bring in some help, in a move that could be helpful if less splashy than trading Russell Westbrook. But what does that look like? What kind of player would the Lakers get in return? Is it a matter of taking on long term salary? Giving up one pick instead of two? Are there any potential deals where the Lakers could actually demand draft capital come to them? And regarding Westbrook, how has his play changed the context of a deal? It's no longer addition by subtraction, given the success Russ has found as a sixth man. And meanwhile, the context around the league has also changed. Are the Pacers, for example, in any hurry to trade Buddy Hield and Myles Turner, given their surprisingly competitive start? The Hornets might be sellers... but do you want any of their stuff? But before all that, Anthony Davis is listed as probable for Friday's game in Philadelphia. He played great in the first game of the trip against Giannis, and now faces Joel Embiid, against whom he had arguably his best game of last season. It seems like Davis is really starting to relish, and take personally, these marquee matchups against the league's best bigs. And speaking of which, if you make a list of the three best bigs in the NBA, is Davis on it? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron and AD should be available against Philadelphia. Is Davis one of the three best bigs in the league? SEGMENT 2: Revisiting the context around trading Westbrook, from his value to the value he has for the Lakers to the potential places he could be sent. SEGMENT 3: What if the Lakers flipped Beverley and Nunn? What could they get for those guys? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. For the last two seasons, pundits, team officials and Lakers players alike have all agreed that the key to the team's success is Anthony Davis. He needs to be their most dominant player on a night in, night out basis. The difference between All Star AD and MVP caliber AD is the thing that can elevate the Lakers more than any other personnel move that's available to them. The last three games for the Lakers, all wins, have shown what that looks like, as Davis has thrashed the competition. But that's without LeBron James in the lineup, and against subpar competition. So what has to happen for this version of Davis to be the one the Lakers see even when James is back? When the schedule toughens up, and teams game play for even more heavily than they already do? Is it James that has to change? He's been the team's leading scorer in fourth quarters every year they've played together, including the 2020 title year and the playoff run. Is this a matter of habit - LeBron has been a closer his entire career, after all - a function of his talent, the natural hierarchy of things, or something else? Is it Davis, himself, that has prevented this ascension? What role does Darvin Ham and the offense he designs play in all this? And what about the supporting cast? But first... are the Lakers really waiting on a trade to based on measuring their chances this season, or does success or failure now not really figure into the equation, at least relative to future success? Do the Lakers have players of value, beyond those first rounders? Does his Sixth Man stint raise the value of Russell Westbrook? Are Beverley, Nunn, etc. anything more than contract numbers on a spreadsheet? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Are the Lakers really thinking about this season when considering trades, or is it more about long term potential? SEGMENT 2: Who has value for the Lakers? And what needs to happen for Anthony Davis to be "The Man" on the Lakers? SEGMENT 3: More on AD. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Tuesday's show was centered around the question of why the Lakers seem to be waiting before pushing hard on a trade. Multiple reports, starting in the preseason and moving through this week, have stated in one form or another that the team wants to see what it has with everyone available before making big decisions. In this case, seeing Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant in the lineup, both of whom ought to be back on Friday vs. Detroit. Is that enough for the team to compete? Is it enough to show they'd be good enough to push their remaining chips into the center of the table? A lot depends on Anthony Davis and LeBron James (ok, just about everything). If those guys are super elite? If they're not? What about something in between? The answer to that question is something the Lakers need to consider. We put it out on a poll, and got some interesting responses from Lakers fans. That, no surprise, is a major discussion point. But first, news! The aforementioned Bryant and Schroder practiced with the South Bay G-League squad Tuesday, another indication they should return on Friday. Meanwhile, Kendrick Nunn joined them, not because he's hurt, but to try and find a rhythm that has been totally absent to this point during the season. It's shocking to say, but Nunn has been unplayable to this point, and likely will find himself absorbing a lot of DNPs once Schroder is available. The Lakers would love to see him fix what ails him, though. And finally, Max Christie may lose some PT when more players are available, but not for lack of performance. After a shaky Summer League and preseason, the 19-year old rookie has held up surprisingly well playing rotation minutes over the last few games. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers should be getting a boost to the rotation on Friday. How much does it matter? SEGMENT 2: Max Christie has been a very pleasant surprise, after Darvin Ham basically stuck him into the rotation out of necessity. SEGMENT 3: Are LeBron and AD good enough right now to justify a trade? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built Bar Built Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
