When the Bowens' new neighbor Baylee Parsons and her mom, Jill, heard that The Flood was rehearsing on Wednesday night, they dropped by to test the waters (ooo! See what we did there?) The first tune the guys played for these lovely Flood first-timers illustrated the band's longtime interest in old-time string band music. They turned to their usual go-to guy — Charlie Poole — and his “Leaving Home,” a 1927 winking, nodding retelling of the classic Frankie and Johnny story.Pamela's video of the tune is further enhanced here with vintage film footage from He Was Her Man, Dudley Murphy's 1931 film starring Gilda Gray and Walter Fenner. For the back story on this great old tune, check out this earlier Flood Watch article. Sarah Dionne joined Tim and Mary Lee to discuss: How should parents relate to their adult children who are leaving the home (children generally between the ages of 17 and 22)?There are many books teaching parents how to care for toddlers and teenagers, but fewer about what to do with adult children who are leaving or have already left the home. How do parents handle it when their children are leaving home? It's heartbreaking, yet by the time they are 18, parents should be ready and encouraged to see them leave. How long should daughters stay in their father's home? With time, the authority of father and mother shifts from command to wise counsel. But the obligation to be a mother and father does not end when children are over 18. They still need counsel; they should not be cut off—launched and forgotten. How do you keep your children's hearts soft toward you as they grow into adulthood?Links:1. Today's guest is a musical architect whose fingerprints are on some of the most emotionally resonant and sonically rich records of the last decade. He's not the loudest in the room—but when he's in the studio, every note, every tone, every beat matters. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer with an unmatched intuition, he brings out the soul in every song, guiding artists to their most authentic performances. From Grammy-winning collaborations with Kacey Musgraves to shaping records across indie, country, rock, and beyond, he's the quiet force behind the soundtracks to our lives. DESIGN YOUR FAMILY'S HOMESCHOOL WITH YOUR HOMESCHOOL BLUEPRINT https://littlebylittlehomeschool.com/blueprint CREATE YOUR HOME TASK SYSTEM WITH THE TIDY HOME https://www.littlebylittlehomeschool.com/tidyhome The truth is that someday, your children will be grown and will leave home. It's not a pleasant thought in the midst of the long full days of homeschooling. But, it comes anyway. And after all of these years with your homeschool children in your home, what is life like for mom afterwards? Over the past few years, I've been in this season of life. My kids are launching, sometimes coming back home for a season, and living their young adult lives no longer under the direction of their mother. I'm going to be brutally honest about my experience in today's episode. There were a few hidden realities that no one prepared me for that I want to share with you. My hope this that you feel equipped to someday (or now) walk through the season of your children growing up with grace and peace...and a deep satisfaction that the homeschool years were well worth it. ♥ Leigh Website - https://www.littlebylittlehomeschool.com Newsletter - https://littlebylittlehomeschool.subscribemenow.com/ Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/homeschoollifestylecommunity Follow - https://www.instagram.com/littlebylittlehomeschool/ Connect - info@littlebylittlehomeschool.com Listen to these related episodes: 185. On this week's episode of the Voices of Wisdom, I have the great pleasure of talking to Anne Upczak-Garcia, the author of the heart-wrenching, deep, beautiful story in the book Among Walkers. Being the daughter of a Venezuelan family, this book broke my heart into pieces. Not only did it illuminate a migrant crisis (the ramifications of which I was not fully aware of) but it also illuminated my own sadness of being disconnected from my homeland. In this podcast episode, we talk about: What Venezuela was like in the 90s How Venezuela got to this point + a few historical events Why Anne wrote this story as an American woman Why Anne decided to give the book a happy ending What happens when a government has so much control The heartbreak of being disconnected from one's homeland And so much more!! Anne is a writer, mother and educator. She writes because she believes it is important to tell stories, to listen to stories and to pass stories along to children. She writes in her journal, she writes for work and she writes fiction. All of these types of writing free her mind and help her spirit grow. She is available for readings, podcasts, presentations or workshops. Just reach out! You can contact Anne on her website: https://www.anneupczakgarcia.com/ To purchase the book, click here: https://www.amazon.com/Among-Walkers-Anne-Upczak-Garcia/dp/B0C8S9TJ1P Her book is also available on Barnes & Noble & Apple Books. You don't need fancy binoculars or lavish trips abroad to look for birds. In fact, you don't even have to leave home — you can enjoy the birds out the window every day. And you don't actually have to physically go anywhere to find birds. You can use a smartphone or computer to go birding. There are several websites where you can view live feeds of nests.
