Welcome to a revamped Everything Compliance Shout Out & Rants. We have a new host, Adam Turteltaub, and a new panelist, Rebecca Walker, who joins returning regulars Matt Kelly, Jonathan Armstrong, and Karen Moore for the next iteration of Everything Compliance Shout Outs and Rants. Turteltaub rants about flopping in the World Cup. Matt Kelly rants about the Supreme Court's Slaughter decision for allowing the president to fire independent agency commissioners, warning it will end bipartisan stability, drive away minority-party commissioners, and create volatile, hyper-partisan regulation. Rebecca Walker shouts out about curiosity, citing Harvard graduate Noah Eckstein's speech “The Punchline” and the advice to “listen like you might be wrong,” applying it to investigations, risk assessment, and compliance decision-making; a book and TED Talk on being wrong are recommended. Jonathan Armstrong highlights Slaughter's implications for EU/UK/Swiss-US data transfers and gives a football transfer shout-out. Karen Moore shouts out to America ahead of its 250th birthday and to her child's partner, Ren Nguyen, for becoming a certified air traffic controller. Everything Compliance Shout Outs and Rants is a production of the Compliance Podcast Network.

Dave Kellett returns from his first-ever college reunion with a full heart — and a renewed appreciation for old friends, running jokes, and the occasional listener washing dishes through the cold open. From there, Brad and Dave dig into one of the trickiest parts of writing comics: how much work should the reader have to do to “get” the punchline? Using Brad's motorcycle-jump-over-a-ravine metaphor, they discuss why wider joke “canyons” can create bigger laughs, why shorter jumps can feel merely “technically funny,” and why the best cartoonists learn how to build strong launching ramps while understanding that every reader brings a different landing ramp. Also in this episode: How to show music in a silent medium, why semi-realistic comics should still embrace comics iconography, a quick San Diego Comic-Con update, Bluesky's expanded image carousel, and why obsessing over analytics can become a form of creative procrastination. Topics covered in this episode include: Writing punchlines that require inference from the reader Brad's “motorcycle jumping a ravine” metaphor for humor Why wider joke gaps can produce bigger laughs The difference between “funny” and “technically funny” Why some jokes land for one reader and miss for another How audience literacy, life experience, and context affect comedy Why “it took me a second” can be a feature, not a bug The danger of making every joke too obvious Why memorable comics often take bigger comedic swings Why being someone's “top three cartoonist” matters more than broad mild approval The difference between newspaper-era comics and webcomics-era audience building Dave's San Diego Comic-Con booth update The free ComicLab pin for listeners at Booth 1228 Bluesky expanding post image limits from 4 images to 10 How the new Bluesky carousel can help sequential artists How to communicate piano music in comics Why floating music notes are not “too cartoony” for semi-realistic comics Using established comics iconography instead of reinventing the wheel Why comics can suggest music but rarely reproduce the experience of music How manga and anime use visual language more freely Using musical notation as a visual “spice,” not the whole dish Why analytics can become creative avoidance Whether it matters how quickly a comic reaches its maximum views Why “magic number” thinking can distract from improving the next comic Why creators should spend less time dusting bookcases and more time making better comics What's better? A simple gag or one that requires the audience to think? UPDATE: Comic-Con International booth 1228 Update: Bluesky update... 10 images per post!
This week on Dishing It Out, Gary and Gareth welcome comedian Willa White to the studio for a chat that goes from belly laughs to brutally honest life stories and back again.Willa talks about how he first got in to stand-up, going from recovery meetings and prison to comedy workshops, Vicar Street, touring, and building a career without ever really planning to become a comedian. He opens up about his past, addiction, recovery, time in prison in Ireland and the UK, and how comedy became part of a very different life.Food-wise, there's plenty to get stuck into too. Willa chats about prison food, working as a butcher, growing up on simple dinners, his love of pork chops, offal and chowder (as long as it's not more than a tenner!)In this week's Nespresso Dish of the Week, Gareth guides you through how to properly pan-fry fish at home without fear. Then it's over to your Culinary Conundrums, where the lads explain mise en place and what it actually means for home cooks.Keep those questions coming to food@goloudnow.com .

If you follow politics at all, your head must be on a swivel (and hurting) with all of the upheaval going in America and abroad. In many cases, promises were made but not kept which may be making you rethink some of your recent choices at the ballot box and even squirm a bit.Comedian JP Sears dissects these recent events and, like the deft, wise humorist he is, reminds us that giving our power as citizens way too easily on promises not delivered makes us the punchline of the joke, a lesson all of us can learn from as we create a better destiny for ourselves and the world this week on Spirit Gym.Learn more about JP and his work on his website. There's a strong, hidden connection between comedy and clarity. When communicating, there's a fundamental difference between your point (the “what”) and the payoff (the “so what”). The intentional structure and sequence of clarity needs to take a critical cue from joke telling: start strong, and always end with a laugh. Ang pagbabalik ni Inah Evans sa The Linya-Linya Show!Marami nang nangyari mula noong huli natin siyang makasama— mula hosting, TV shows, podcast guestings, theater, improv, at stand-up comedy. Busy at blessed, ika nga. Listen up, yo.

The box office big beast this week is Toy Story 5, and we're bringing you Mark's verdict on this fifth instalment of the beloved Pixar franchise. It's been a Take favourite since it first hit screens in the 90s and has never let us down so far, but can it really live up to the hype for the fifth film in a row? Plus we've got two more reviews from this weekend's cinema slate. First up, Welsh language drama Effi o Blaenau, which recasts a Greek tragedy plot in working-class Cardiff. And from gritty modern drama to glossy period drama, there's Virginia Woolf's Night and Day - an ‘unromantic comedy' based on a comic novel by modernist literature's most famous feminist. It also brings us to our guest this week… It's Timothy Spall, who will be chatting to Simon about playing the film's crusty old patriarch, Mr. Hilbery. One of our most respected and versatile British actors, Spall has played everyone from Winston Churchill to Wormtail, and has made several celebrated films with Mike Leigh (famously, the friendliest of all directors). This one is a meaty chat not to be missed. Mark will be playing Mr Punchline in this week's Laughter Lift - unfortunately unlikely to make it any funnier. John's monologue this time delves into Acting A.G. Todd Blanche telling congress that they will take Trump's slush fund "settlement" off the table in his lawsuit against the IRS but they are keeping Trump and his family's IRS immunity in and it stays intact. John also discusses Secretary of State AND National Security Advisor Marco Rubio saying to lawmakers that they are winning the non-war in Iran. Plus, they marvel at the forehead slapping stupidity of Trump appointing boot-licking nepo-baby Bill Pulte as Director of National Intelligence replacing Tulsi Gabbord. Next, John interviews Colonel Edmund J. Barrett (Ret.) who is running for the Maryland State Senate in legislative district 37, facing off in a June 23rd primary against Katie Clendaniel to see who will take on incumbent Republican Johnny Mautz in the general election this fall. And finally, comedian Greg Proops returns and they talk about his new album "KIDDING... BUT STILL" which is out now from A Special Thing records. So today I want to introduce you to a cop turned comedian, Jim Perry. We're going to talk about his journey into stand up comedy and why cops are a natural fit to tell jokes, deal with hecklers, and survive when your jokes bomb on stage.
