If you've ever found yourself relaxing on the couch with a warm cup of tea, lost in thought about your day, Cecily's beautiful music is exactly what you need to enhance those moments. Cecily is an amazing vocalist and songwriter based in DC, known for her soothing and rich voice. She describes her music as a blend of soul with strong influences from jazz, 90's R&B, and a touch of folk. She's shared the stage with some incredible talent, opening for award-winning artists like Gregory Porter and Jose James, as well as R&B stars like Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner. She's even performed alongside folk artist Becca Stevens and alternative soul pioneer Bilal. Just this past June, she released Awakening Pt. II, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2019 project Awakening Pt. I. I had the pleasure of chatting with her virtually on Zoom, and it was truly inspiring. We explored her musical influences, reminisced about her experiences at the Umbria Jazz Festival, and discussed her connection to Gil Scott-Heron. We also delved into the messages and creative process behind Awakening Pt. II. We wrapped up our conversation by talking about her approach to songwriting and the challenges of releasing an album independently. It was such a delightful exchange, and I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed our conversation!

Acclaimed international jazz artist Jose James has a composure about him that one might compare to James Bond. The Minneapolis native claims he was one of the least talented artists in his music circles growing up, yet he ultimately attended The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. His first album, The Dreamer, debuted in 2008. Since then, he's gone on to play at the Kennedy Center, The Hollywood Bowl, Ancienne Belgique, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Melbourne Symphony and has recorded 11 more records including his latest which dropped April 5—the stunning album 1978, named for the year of his birth. Along the way, he's picked up honor after honor in establishing himself as an extraordinary jazz singer/songwriter—but one built for the hip-hop generation. Pitchfork called him, “one of the suavest vocal improvisers on the scene,” and it's been said his arrangements and approach are “in deep conversation with funk, R&B, and hip-hop.” Despite oozing cool, he's not really all about himself. You quickly understand that James lives for the collaboration and building art that he loves with others. “I really grew up with this idea that you make music with a band, with other people,” he told me recently on The Load Out Music Podcast. He grew up feeling the diverse vibes of bands ranging from the Ohio Players and Peter, Paul and Mary found in his mother's record collection; the funky global beats of his multi-instrumentalist father's band, Ipso Facto; the western church music of his Catholic school and diverse artists such as Nirvana, 10,000 Maniacs, De la Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Grammy-winner Bobby McFerrin who was the creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for a time in the early 1990s. When he was 17, James attended a McFerrin concert with the noted jazz pianist Chick Corea. It was then that he was hooked on the idea that a career in music was inevitable—but he still was surprised that others saw it as well. “Wow,” James said. “People see something in me that I might not see. I didn't really go to college. I didn't want to do the traditional route. I was like, I can have a coffee shop job and pay my rent and see what happens. This is where my spirit is taking me.” Despite a love for jazz, early on James understood that jazz could be limiting and wanted to explore the boundaries of the genre. “There is a strong jazz radio, but it's pretty strict about what they play,” he said, noting that listeners essentially find smooth or classic jazz on radio, but the parameters are narrow. Thus, he approaches each record with the understanding that he must keep certain singles within the ditches, producing them to be radio friendly, while stretching boundaries on other tracks with dance, pop and hip-hop beats. “I think it's more frustrating that jazz, in general, is not more popular in America,” he muses, despite his voice not elevating to indicate any semblance of anger. “You go to Tokyo, go to any shopping mall, restaurant, they are playing jazz.” As James' star has risen, he's realized two principal realities about his chosen career: That money and power still drive the industry and that he would be little without the graciousness of other artists. “It's not just about talent, James said. “It's about who's pushing you and how much money.” This became apparent to him when he released a single independently in 2012 to little fanfare. However, the same single was included on his first album for the vaunted Blue Note label and it became a sensational hit, landing him appearances on David Letterman's and Conan O'Brien's late-night shows. James credits his success to mentors who have given him their time including legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner (who worked with John Coltrane), singer Anita Baker, composer Christian McBride, band leader Chico Hamilton and even former late-night host Jay Leno. “There's so much generosity going around,” he said. “You have to take the wins.” As for 1978, James said that it is, “The first time I've really gotten personal in a concrete way. I'm going to reveal more about myself and where I'm from.” He points to the racial politics of Minnesota and efforts to bring to bear a range of influences including Prince, Michael Jackson and even Bob Dylan. “I call it party and politics because, to me, that's what the 70s kind of resonates with. People knew how to party. They could throw down. But they were also famous for taking a stand.” Thus, the first half of the album is what he calls “party,” while the second half focuses on “politics,” including pieces written in the memories of George Floyd and Trayvon Martin. “I don't really worry about it,” James said of injecting politics into his art. “I've definitely gotten some of that—the shut up and sing kind of vibe. If it's important to you, I think you've got to talk about it. If people don't like it, that's kind of fine.” It's important to Jose James indeed. Enjoy a tremendous episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with the acclaimed jazz maestro.
In this episode of The Third Story podcast, host Leo Sidran talks with singer-songwriter Jose James about his professional and personal journey.
Singer Jose James on his new record 1978, his professional and personal journey, the unique demands of being a jazz singer today, why he believes good art should be transformative, how he stays healthy, the creative challenges brought on by happiness and whether or not one needs to suffer in order to make good art. This episode is dedicated to the late saxophonist and vocoder master Casey Benjamin who passed away on March 30th at the age of 45. Casey, a brilliant and influential musician, spent much of his career at the crossroads of jazz and hip hop. I never knew him but I was always very aware of him and a big admirer of his playing. During this conversation with Jose James, Casey's name came up several times. Given the context of his recent passing, what was originally a set of casual commentaries about Benjamin's dedication to music and community was transformed into a tribute to him and I am heartened by how much admiration Jose and Taali had for their friend. www.third-story.com https://leosidran.substack.com/ https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story
"The words love and like both have 4 letters, but they're two different things all together" - Whodini (from One Love - 1986) "Funk used to be a bad word" - Funkadelic (from Let's Take It To The Stage - 1975) "Jazz is a 4 letter word" - Max Roach, Nicholas Payton and anyone else who can read, write and count. The word jazz is a controversial term. It might be the new "N" word. It's meaning has gone through various changes, in the early 1900's jazz meant fornication. In an interview with The Harvard Crimson (2001) Max Roach, the legendary drummer, composer and activist, pointed out his distaste for the word most commonly used to describe the music to which he dedicated his life. In the article he used the example of the infamous Scottsboro Boys Trial, which took place in 1931 in Alabama. In the case, which eventually made its way to the Supreme Court, several black boys were accused of raping two white girls. During the trial a letter one of the alleged victims wrote to a friend was used to proved that no rape had occurred, in the letter the word jazz came up - she wrote "those boys didn't jazz me". Jazz it seems used to be a very bad word. So, in that context, one can see how using the word jazz to describe ones art would be an insult. Nonetheless, Jazz is word that we are left with. Jazz is 4 letter word, a word that inadequately describes such an important, exquisitley advanced and beautifully articulated African American musical artform. Love it or hate it (2 more 4 letter words...) the Jazz label has now been so widely marketed and associated with this music that... it is what it is. I usually preface my descripition of this artform by calling it the "music we so lovingly call, Jazz". It's my attempt to lessen to the sting of our frought linguistic history. I'm not embarrassed or even against the jazz label, but I know it has a history of distain by many of the creators of the music. Miles Davis didn't like it, he suggested calling it social music, Roy Hargrove is on record saying the term means nothing to him, and Nicholas Payton hates it and has suggested it be relabeled BAM - Black American Music, right on brother! My stance is thus, call it what ya like, all that really matters is what happens on the band stand and in between your ears. A groove, is a groove, is a groove and "jazz" is the groove that moves me, hopefully it moves you too - enough to shout out loud a couple other 4 letter words - "Yeah baby" Enjoy, Brian "katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Jose James - What A Little Moonlight Can Do (2015) Robert Glasper Trio - 59 South (2009) Mark Egan - Summer Fun (2015) Ben Williams - Moontrane (2011) Luciana Souza - Backfile (2000) Terence Blanchard - Him Or Me (2009) Captain Black Big Band - Water Babies (2021) Roy Hargrove Big Band - Roy Allan (2009) Gil Scott-Heron - I Think I'll Call It Morning (1971) Nicholas Payton - Jazz Is A 4 Letter Word (2019) Christian McBride Trio - I Guess I'll have To Forget (2013)

brad allan williams is not only a great guitar player but also a serious recording engineer, and someone who understands both the technical and emotional sides to record making. Known for his work with Jose James, Nate Smith and Brittany Howard, he released his album œconomy on Pete Min's Colorfield label earlier this year. Like all Colorfield releases, œconomy was born from an improvisatory spirit that reflects the label's mission. Artists show up to the recording sessions with nothing written. They create spontaneously in the studio and then edit, arrange, and develop those improvisations into their record. In the case of brad's œconomy album, he added string arrangements to his free form compositions and a few virtuosic cameos by drummer Mark Guiliana. This conversation is not only an exploration of that process but also a master class in Memphis music history, a meditation on the merits of music with “layered emotions”, a conversation about relationship between suffering and art, connecting the threads of noise rock and bebop, specialization vs broad knowledge, the value of vulnerability in music, why he doesn't capitalize his name, and the journey that led him from Memphis to Los Angeles by way of Southern Mississippi, North Texas, New Jersey, New York, and the moon. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

For saxophonist Ben Wendel, the pandemic provided the space for him to develop his latest solo record, All One (Edition Records), a project that is both very solitary and very collaborative. It features a woodwind choir of saxophones and bassoons performed entirely by Ben, and then joined by special guests like singers Cecile McLorin Salvant and Jose James, guitarist Bill Frisell, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard. Wendel is no stranger to experimentation or to collaboration. As a member of the genre bending group Kneebody, he has always had one foot in contemporary music. And previous solo projects were motivated by his desire to collaborate, like The Seasons which found him composing 12 original pieces dedicated to 12 musicians he admired and then performed with those musicians. Wendel performed at the Village Vanguard in New York earlier this spring. He was joined by his longtime friend and musical partner, drummer Nate Wood, Harish Raghavan on bass, Gilad Hekselman & Nir Felder on guitar (they split the week between them) and Larry Goldings on piano. We spoke that week about playing in that sacred space, his desire to connect and to belong, his ongoing negotiation with technology, and how his personal experience during the pandemic influenced his music. Plus, learning the ineffable wisdom of his elders in the music. www.third-story.com https://www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Matt talks about R&B first dance songs to play as a married couple. Important Links View the complete list of R&B first dance songs. See all Wedding Songs Podcast episodes Podcast Transcript R&B music is soulful, it's romantic, and I think it makes for some of the best wedding songs you can play as a married couple. Today I am going to be focusing on more of the newer songs so of course, these are not the tried and true classics that you can find. Examples like Sam Cook and Nat King Cole. I just want to give you some ideas that are outside of the box that maybe you haven't thought of, that maybe describe your relationship and your love for each other. Now, if you prefer to read the list, or listen to the list (as you know we cannot play the list legally), you can do so on the website MyWeddingSongs.com and just search for First Dance songs and it will come up. While you are on the website, make sure you sign up for our monthly newsletter of all the new wedding songs released in the previous month, plus what is trending. Let us go ahead and get started with the first song on the list. It is by Veto and is called “Forever”. Released in 2022 it is a brand new song but it is quickly becoming very popular. Lyrics include…You have all the leverage, girl, I'm yours if you want it, Let's make it forever, girl. Another great new song is by Selah Sue called “You (Rework)” with the lyrics…All I need is time in your embrace, It's always so much better, Never in my life I've felt this way, Yes, you are all I need. Another one of my recent favorites is by Ric Hassani and is called “Angel (Acoustic Version)” You may not have heard of him yet, but this is a fantastic first dance song with the lyrics…I might lose sleep tonight, ‘Cause finally my dream has come true, I was created for you, You are my angel. As I said, the lyrics fit very nicely into a first dance song. Now, this next song was on top of the R&B adult chart, and it is by the popular Kem with his song “Stuck On You”. It was released in 2022 with the lyrics…And your love, Is all I needed, To be fearless, Baby, I'm stuck on you. And, the last song I have, released in 2022, is by an artist probably most well known for his song “Down”. It is Jay Sean with his song “Incomplete” with the lyrics (I should say the lover lyrics)…Never know when it could be different, If there was no you, I'd be, I'd be incomplete. Probably my favorite song on the whole list is by the artists Jose James and Taali with the song “I Found A Love”. Lyrics include…I found a love, The kind to hold, The kind that lifts you from the bottom of your soul, The kind that makes, The broken whole. Next up is Leela James in 2021 with the song “You're The One” with romantic lyrics…You're the one that treats me right, Just the way I like, You're the one. I like the connotations of this next song, “At My Worst” by Pink Sweat$ and Kehlani with the lyrics…If you stay forever, let me hold your hand, I can fill those places in your heart no one else can, Let me show you, love, oh, I don't pretend. Next up is actually a popular first dance song, “Conversations In The Dark” by John Legend, released in 2020. Lyrics include…You get hung up on your flaws, Well, in my eyes, you are perfect, As you are. Another duet is “Anything For You” by Ledisi and PJ Morton. It was released in 2020 with the lyrics…I will do anything for you, You are my life, one means us two, Anything, anything for you. Rahsaan Patterson released “Sent From Heaven” in 2019 with the lyrics…Thoughts of you rise like the sun, and, My days are much brighter Because you're sent from heaven. Another popular first dance song is by Snoh Aalegra “Find Someone Like You” released in 2019 with the lyrics…I've been waitin' my whole life, to find someone like you, Find someone like you. Here is another song that is not going to be on everybody's radar. Derran Day's song “My Word” was released in 2018 with the lyrics…Cross every star,

We had the pleasure of interviewing José James over Zoom video! Out now, the jazz voice of the hip hop generation José James (Rainbow Blonde Records) releases his first ever Christmas album Merry Christmas from José James. In addition to the album release, José also premieres the official performance video for the original track "Christmas in New York" today. The contemporary album celebrates the holiday season while honoring classic jazz and pop records of the 1950s. Combining the classic jazz-crooner elegance of Frank Sinatra and Nat “King” Cole with the earthy sophistication of soul legends Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, the ten track Merry Christmas from José James takes listeners on a world-class holiday experience from one of the greatest living voices in jazz.Listeners can find two original tracks, “Christmas in New York” and “Christmas Day” along with popular ballads such as “The Christmas Song,” “White Christmas,” “Let it Snow” and “This Christmas,” a modern twist on the Donny Hathaway holiday favorite. In James' version, he musically brings an aspect of R&B and hip-hop to the mostly Jazz collection.Songwriting for the project was spearheaded by José James and his partner, recently Grammy nominated Talia Billig. The album's studio band features Grammy winning and nominated all stars Ben Williams (bass), Aaron Parks(piano), Jharis Yokley (drums) and Marcus Strickland (soprano saxophone). Produced by José James and Brian Bender and recorded by Ariel Shafir at Dreamland Studios, the album was mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios. The session was recorded completely live on 2” tape and mixed in LCR (left-center-right) by Brian Bender at Motherbrain West.“It's the perfect album to put on whenever there's a certain spirit in the air,” James says. “I hope that people can feel a little bit of the joy and the wonder, year round, that 8-year-old José felt, not only about Christmas and all the obvious things—the ornaments, the tree, the holiday season—but also the music,” he continued.A 13 date tour to support the album will launch at SF Jazz in San Francisco on November 27th and conclude at New York's City Winery on December 14th. Stops also include Seattle, Portland, Santa Cruz, LA, Phoenix, Santa Fe, Minneapolis and Chicago. (All tour dates listed below). About José James James, a Minneapolis, MN native who spent most of his career in New York, was discovered by Gilles Peterson in London before his major label debut with Blue Note Records. He has produced and written 11 albums covering the best of jazz, pop, hip-hop and R&B. In 2017, José made his screen debut with a performing role in Fifty Shades Darker. He now lives in Amsterdam with Talia Billig, his partner and Grammy nominated songwriter. We want to hear from you! Drummer, composer and bandleader Nate Smith is known and celebrated in many circles. In recent years his drumming has become as influential as it has been ubiquitous. Transcription books of his playing have been written, and any drummer trying to play funk or pocket oriented music today will have to confront Nate's playing one way or another. He has a very specific and personal way of drumming, both deeply reliable and rooted, and also very fluid and flexible. Some know him from his early work with Dave Holland and Chris Potter. Some know him from his association with the Vulfpeck crew, and the Vulf adjacent project The Fearless Flyers. Some know him from his playing with southern rock singer songwriter and icon Brittany Howard. Some - many in fact - may have discovered him by way of the singer Jose James, and the viral videos that Jose made of Nate's nightly solos back in 2016, which he tagged with the hashtag #thelegendarynatesmith. As Nate tells it, he was in his early 40s when he had his first viral video and it changed his life and career. Some know him from his own compositions and solo records. He recently released Kinfolk 2: See The Birds, the second in a trilogy that seeks to tell Nate's personal story through music. He says, “I'm interested in compositions that have a narrative and a concept. I think about ‘what's the story'?” One gets the sense that although Nate is an incredible drummer, the drums are not the end of the story for him, but rather, the means to an end. He's so deeply funky and creative on the drums and also such an intensely sensitive and emotional composer - he even co-wrote and co-produced a track for Michael Jackson, back when he was still living in Richmond, Virginia, where he cut his teeth and earned his stripes. We talked recently about the technical, emotional, strategic, mystical, unpredictable aspects to music and a life in music, how where you come from affects how you sound, the value and values of great leadership, the influence of other drummer-bandleaders on his conception, and what the internet taught him about his own playing. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.natesmithmusic.com/

This week's guest is Richard “Crave The Spave” Spaven. He's been one of the most requested names as of late and ohhhhhh what a treat it was! Having played with Jose James, Flying Lotus, Gang Star, Cinematic Orchestra, Jameszoo (which I was hipped to via Ian Maciak on HIS episode) and many more, Richard's career as a sideman alone is enough to put him in the legend category, but it's his solo ventures that really showcase his unique ability to be a drummer's drummer without being too drummy. These are, of course, all technical terms, but he respects both the craft and the audience at all times. His ability to finagle through complex patterns while maintaining a conscious level of listenability is second to none. He's a proper English gentlemen and, in this episode, he dissects the 5 biggest influences that made him into the drummer he is today. This week's guest is Aaron Steele. Aaron is a melting pot of creativity who has a Rolodex of influences including everything from hardcore to jazz to singer-songwriter to r&b to electronica to funk to pop and back again. Don't you dare put him in a box! Aaron's resume includes Portugal. The Man. Hayley Williams of Paramore, Peter Bradley Adams, Chrome Sparks, Jose James and, of course, many more. Our chat went well over two hours, so I consolidated it just a bit. We'll be jumping in right as we get into the topic of comparing yourself to other players (something that Aaron never does)…before eventually dissecting the top 5 influences that shaped Aaron's style. As to be expected, Aarons's choices are NOT expected, but they are very impactful and I'm really excited to dive deeper into all these artists. You can find all the songs referenced or played in this episode in a Spotify playlist. Just search ‘Big Fat Five Podcast - Aaron Steele'.
