Send us a textTiny explores Rabbit Hole's Hiegold Single Barrel Cask Strength bourbon while discussing the brand's artistic approach to bottle design and distillery architecture. We take a deep dive into the complex nature of bourbon blending, aging conditions, and how whiskey changes over time.• Rabbit Hole Distillery founded by Kaveh Zamanian creates bourbon that captures the essence of what you smell in actual rickhouses• Kentucky exclusive Hiegold features special label designs by Mark Gagnon celebrating Ohio's aviation history• The Louisville distillery offers a modern architectural experience culminating in a sixth-floor bar with city views• Rabbit Hole's lineup includes Cave Hill (standard bourbon), Hiegold (high rye), DARERINGER (sherry finished), and Boxergrail (rye)• Discussion of how bourbon consistency was the industry standard until about 10 years ago when batch variation became desirable• Experiment mixing Cave Hill and Hiegold together created a distinct gingerbread cookie flavor not present in either bourbon alone• Environmental factors affecting bourbon from production through transportation and shelf storage significantly impact flavor• Upcoming podcast featuring Greg Schneider and his new Four Branches Distillery's 9-year Kentucky straight bourbonPlease support our sponsors: Middle West Spirits (check out their new purchase of Old Elk), Whiskey Thief Distillery, Spirit of French Lick, Rosewood Bourbons and Ryes, and Alan Bishop's One Piece at a Time Distilling Institute.Bourbon enthusiasts know that every bottle tells a story, but Rabbit Hole takes this concept to artistic heights with their intricately designed single barrel releases. Tiny explores their Hiegold expression – a bourbon featuring German rye that captures the authentic essence of what you smell walking through a Kentucky rickhouse rather than the caramel-sweet profiles dominating today's market. The episode peels back the layers on Rabbit Hole's Louisville distillery, a modern architectural marvel where visitors spiral alongside the still, culminating at a sixth-floor bar overlooking the city. Unlike traditional Kentucky distilleries that lean heavily on heritage, founder Kaveh Zamanian has created a contemporary bourbon experience that honors tradition through flavor rather than façade. What truly captivates is Tiny's deep dive into bourbon's evolution over the past decade. Where consistency once reigned supreme, today's market celebrates batch variation – a marketing revolution pioneered by legends like Elmer T. Lee, Jimmy Russell, and Booker Noe who transformed "inconsistency" into exclusivity. Similarly, finished whiskeys once derided by purists are now embraced as innovative expressions of the distiller's craft. The most fascinating segment comes when Tiny experiments with mixing bourbons, discovering how Cave Hill and Hiegold together create a distinct gingerbread cookie note absent in either bourbon independently. This sparks a broader discussion about how bourbon's chemical composition continuously evolves through production, transportation, storage conditions, and even how it settles on your shelf at home.Whether you're a bourbon novice or connoisseur, this episode offers valuable insights into how environmental factors shape what's in your glass, why modern distilleries are embracing batch variation, and why the seemingly simple act of If You Have Gohsts voice over Whiskey ThiefSupport the showhttps://www.scotchybourbonboys.com The Scotchy bourbon Boys are #3 in Feedspots Top 60 whiskey podcasts in the world https://podcast.feedspot.com/whiskey_podcasts/

Ireland's largest distillery is celebrating 200 years since the original Midleton Distillery opened in 1825, along with the 50th anniversary of the “new” Midleton, which replaced the original distillery in 1975. In the news, Old Elk is getting new ownership and a new home in Ohio, while the Dublin Liberties Distillery is shutting down because of the headwinds facing the Irish Whiskey industry.

A Weirdly Timed Episode... Let's get the awkwardness out of the way - I had the pleasure of interviewing Mel Maddox, now-former Master Blender for Old Elk, on May 2nd. A few days later, it was announced that Old Elk had been acquired by Middle West Spirits (a previous guest!) and, subsequently, all workings at their Fort Collins, Colorado location were ceasing. This included laying off all production staff, including Mel. This was still a wonderful conversation in which I learned about Old Elk, but my favorite part was learning more about Mel. The way she looks at whiskey when creating a blend is synesthetic, hard to describe to those who haven't experienced what color something tastes like or the what shape a mashbill makes in your mind. It's a beautiful talent (my version is seeing sounds in color) that is at once intangible and singular. Long story short...I don't know what the next steps are for Old Elk, or for Mel, but I wish them both the best. I think Old Elk was putting out the best stuff it ever had, and clearly her talents were on full display in blending and finishing. We as whiskey enthusiasts can only hope her next role continues to rely on those talents. Thank you to Mel for entering the Whiskey Ring! In this Tasting Talk on Distilling the West, Dan and Dave explore Old Elk Wheated Bourbon, which they describe as a "vanilla bomb." They dive into the bourbon's pronounced vanilla notes, discussing how the wheat in the mash bill contributes to its smooth, sweet profile. Alongside the vanilla, they highlight hints of caramel, subtle spice, and a creamy texture, making it a rich and inviting pour. Their lively discussion offers a great perspective on what makes this bourbon stand out, perfect for those who enjoy sweeter, well-rounded whiskey flavors.

It's a great conversation as Mel and Jesse drink through some Old Elk Port Cask Finish, some Cigar Cut and then she invites him to be a part of the tasting panel for the NEW Old Elk Wheat Whiskey Cognac Finish! It's a great episode as we get closer to Episode 100! It's Episode 99 of The Bourbon Showdown Podcast with Melinda Maddox from Old Elk!
Tasting Notes: The EPITOME of "Sleeper Hit" the 2022 Old Elk Four Grain is a blend of 2 of the best MGP recipes at unheard of ages. The High Malt MGP bourbon and the high wheat MGP bourbon. Both are relatively polarizing whiskies on their own at younger ages, but at these ages, mellowed out and blended together the combination is something EXTRAORDINARY! Eucalyptus, mint, camphor, and herbs on the nose. On the palate, cinnamon spice, a signature of MGP is followed by toffee and caramel, then whipped into an oak frenzy on the finish.
On this episode, Butch and Lance pop the top on a bottle of Old Elk Cigar Cut and look to decide if this bottle is worth being Almost Allocated.
The holidays might be over, but the fun continues. This week, we welcome our first ever female co-host to the podcast to discuss a very interesting pour. The Old Elk Distillery was founded in 2013 by Curt Richardson and proudly calls Fort Collins, Colorado home. With longtime MGP distiller Greg Metze at the helm, Old Elk's "quiet on purpose" motto has been tested by the excellent and buzzworthy products they are releasing. In this episode, we taste and review Old Elk Cigar Cut Island Blend. Coming in at 111.7 proof and boasting four different types of base distillate with secondary cask finishing of 2 years (sherry, port, rum, and sauternes), there is no telling what we will think of this one. While we are happy that you are back with us for another week, you might want to watch out! Kenny is airing some grievances, but Anthony and the special guest host help bring him back down to earth. Master Distiller Greg Metze joins the show to share the professional and life lessons he's learned during four decades in the whiskey industry. Before leaving a 38-year career at Seagrams and MGP, Greg crafted custom mash bills for Old Elk. The creative freedom of working with new grain-builds inspired him to leave his legacy in Indiana of distilling 65% bourbons and 85% of ryes in the market, and blaze a new path with Old Elk by using his knowledge and passion for creating the highest quality spirits.Guests: Greg Metze & Ross GrahamHosts: Jake Hukee & Peter KImListen to more episodes and read stories at keyinthelake.com
