Christian Zyp interviews Matthew Bauckman and Jaret Belliveau (co-directors) about their documentary KUNG FU ELLIOT. Released originally in 2014, CUFF.Docs is having a 10th anniversary screening of the film on Sunday November 24th, 2024 at 9pm at the Globe Cinema in Calgary.KUNG FU ELLIOT tell the bizarre story of Elliot "White Lightning" Scott, a martial artist with big ambitions: he's determined to become Canada's first kung fu action hero with his low-budget karate epic, BLOOD FIGHT. This surreal documentary captures two years in the lives of a passionate amateur filmmaker, his supportive partner Linda Lum, and their cast and crew of outrageous dreamers striving to achieve success.https://www.kungfuelliot.com/
This week in another exciting episode, we discuss robot overlord Elon Musk and the wacky name he has given he's new baby; as well as the exciting stars taking on the roles of Joe Exotic and that bitch Carol Baskin in an upcoming Tiger King movie. We also review, utterly ridiculous docu-film Kung Fu Elliot. A tale more disturbing than Donald Trump's hair and we learn that some Dick Dastardly type Mother F****r went and change the year, so it isn't actually 2020... So make a nice cup of something hot, throw two sugars in it and prepare your ears!
In this installment of our "Catching Up On Movies About Making Movies" month, Trevor introduces Kyle to the delightfully shocking Canadian documentary, Kung Fu Elliot (2014)! Following the exploits of one Elliot "White Lightning" Scott and his attempts to make no budget action films and become "Canada's first action star", the documentary begins as a story about a wide-eyed dreamer, only to become something much darker and more compelling than most would expect. Directed by Matthew Bauckman and Jaret Belliveau, Kung Fu Elliot is one of Trevor's favorite documentaries, and one we here at Catching Up On Cinema feel is criminally overlooked. Do yourself and look it up on Amazon Prime if you haven't already: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07BLM27YP/ref=cm_sw_tw_r_pv_wb_6oHjtcRr4v3z7

Andrew and Phil welcome the filmmakers behind the new documentary 'Kung Fu Elliot' to this special episode of 'In the Queue'. Jaret Belliveau and Matthew Bauckman are the Canadian filmmakers who racked up awards at Slamdance and Fantastic Fest for this fascinating, stranger-than-fiction tale of Elliot 'White Lightning' Scott, a self-proclaimed martial arts master and amateur filmmaker. The documentary chronicles Elliot's attempt to make his masterwork, "Blood Fight". In the meantime, Elliot's long-suffering girlfriend Linda complains that he will never propose marriage, despite the fact that she seems bitter and bored with him. As the film progresses, it becomes clear that the initially affable Elliot is not who he portrays himself to be...to Linda and the world. Here at 'In the Queue' we love having filmmakers on the podcast to talk about their work. What better compliment to this discussion than viewing 'Kung Fu Elliot' yourself? The doc can be downloaded on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video. Thanks again to Jaret and Matt for being on the show. You can download the podcast here by right-clicking on the hypertext link and choosing "save as", or you can use the convenient player attached to this post.
