Episode 112!  Struck by the events of 9/11, which took place when he was 15 years old, James (J) was convinced stopping radicalization and violence was the best way to help his community.  After earning multiple degrees, he went on to work for the City of Pittsburgh Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security and Region 13 Counter-Terrorism Fusion Center. As an emergency management specialist, J routinely deployed with Pittsburgh SWAT to barricaded suspects and hostage situations, responded to major natural disasters, trained citizen responders, and authored the operationalization of Pittsburgh's evacuation plan.  Due to a mix of chronic stress and endless self-loathing, J hit rock bottom that nearly cost him his life in December of 2010.  Luckily, he was fortunate to be surrounded by great people who taught him how to repair his relationship with himself. This event - and the way others engaged with him - changed his life. As he began to heal and reconnect with others, James realized that virtually everyone around him was going through some version of the same problem.  Constant self-criticism, a deep sense of worthlessness, and hiding the truth from others in shame.  If he wanted to help, he needed to learn why this was happening - and how to fix it.  Tune in to hear how J helps men replace chronic insecurity and shame with a sense of internal peace and grounded confidence.  Enjoy! ===========================================================Connect with J here: Website: https://www.jamesjstamatelos.com/Thanks for listening! For over fifty years, Kool & the Gang have been essential innovators of funk, soul, disco, and R&B, creating rock & roll's most danceable anthems. They are one of the grooviest and most sampled bands of all time, with a recognizable sound that resonates across generations and has brought joy to millions of fans around the globe.Kool & the Gang took their funky groove all the way to the top with a mix of pop songwriting, fantastic vocals, and a killer horn section. Formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, brothers Robert "Kool" and Ronald Bell got their start in clubs, mastering a repertoire of jazz standards and Motown covers. In 1969, they signed to newly formed De-Lite Records and released the up-tempo instrumental "Kool & the Gang." They subsequently released two live albums showcasing their ability to produce brilliantly crafted songs and blistering jams over an infectious beat. Their big break came in 1973 with the album Wild and Peaceful, which leaned deep into funky grooves, horn arrangements, and chanted vocals on the songs "Funky Stuff," "Jungle Boogie," and "Hollywood Swinging" - three instant dance floor classics. They slid easily into the growing disco scene, with their "Open Sesame" featured on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. In the 1980s, Kool & the Gang added lead vocalist James "J.T." Taylor and released two massive hits, the bumping "Ladies Night" and the smooth "Too Hot." With this, they accomplished something rare in the music industry - maintaining the fans who loved their funky roots, while reaching an entirely new audience tuned into their growing pop sensibilities. In 1980, they blew the roof off with the international hit "Celebration" and produced nineteen charting singles during the decade. Kool & the Gang's impact cannot be understated - from the throwback grooves of Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars to the inclusion of the group's songs in almost every party playlist. Countless samples of their music laid the foundation for some of hip-hop's biggest hits by artists including Eric B. & Rakim, Tupac, Lil' Kim, and JAY-Z. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Salvaging Empire: Sovereignty, Natural Resources, and Environmental Science in the South Atlantic (Cornell University Press, 2023) by Dr. James J. A. Blair probes the historical roots and current predicaments of a twenty-first century settler colony seeking to control an uncertain future through resource management and environmental science. Four decades after a violent 1982 war between the United Kingdom and Argentina reestablished British authority over the Falkland Islands (Las Malvinas in Spanish), a commercial fishing boom and offshore oil discoveries have intensified the sovereignty dispute over the South Atlantic archipelago. Scholarly literature on the South Atlantic focuses primarily on military history of the 1982 conflict. However, contested claims over natural resources have now made this disputed territory a critical site for examining the wider relationship between imperial sovereignty and environmental governance. Dr. Blair argues that by claiming self-determination and consenting to British sovereignty, the Falkland Islanders have crafted a settler colonial protectorate to extract resources and extend empire in the South Atlantic. Responding to current debates in environmental anthropology, critical geography, Atlantic history, political ecology, and science and technology studies, Dr. Blair describes how settlers have asserted indigeneity in dynamic relation with the environment. Salvaging Empire uncovers the South Atlantic's outsized importance for understanding the broader implications of resource management and environmental science for the geopolitics of empire. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Kool & The Gang's Robert 'Kool' Bell on 60 years of creating hits

Formed as a jazz ensemble in the mid-'60s, Kool & the Gang became one of the most inspired and influential funk units during the '70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the '80s after their breakout hit "Celebration." Just as funky as James Brown or Parliament (and sampled almost as frequently), Kool & the Gang relied on their jazz backgrounds and long friendship to form a tightly knit group.  Their 21 Top 40 hits display a huge range, from the tough funk of "Jungle Boogie," to the smooth instrumental soul of "Summer Madness," to the lively pop of "Joanna." They hit the Top Ten of the R&B chart with several albums that include the gold Wild and Peaceful in 1973, the all platinum Ladies' Night in 79, Celebrate in 80, Something Special in 81 and Emergency in 84.   Since the '90s, Kool & The Gang have focused most on touring, but they've released several original albums during this time too - the latest of which is People Just Wanna Have Fun in 2023. Our guest today is ROBERT 'KOOL' BELL who with his brother Ronald, founded the group. The boys grew up in Jersey City and picked up the music bug from their father, who was a professional boxer. The duo formed the Jazziacs in 1964 with several neighbourhood friends: they soon renamed themselves the Soul Town Band and began playing clubs in Greenwich Village. After a mix-up with a club owner resulted in the group being billed Kool & the Flames, (and in order to not offend James Brown) they changed their name to Kool & the Gang and quickly became a success on the R&B charts. It was with their 6th album, Wild and Peaceful that Kool & the Gang hit the big time. "Funky Stuff" became their first Top 40 hit at the end of 1973. Then both "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging" reached the Top Ten. Over the next four years, Kool & the Gang delivered a Grammy-nominated recording and scored several Top 40 hits. Their hit "Open Sesame appeared on the Grammy-winning film soundtrack Saturday Night Fever.  However, after this, the rise of disco stalled their popularity. In 1979, the group added two new vocalists, Earl Toon Jr and former Jersey nightclub singer James J.T Taylor. Kool & the Gang also began working with Brazilian jazz fusion arranger/producer Eumir Deodato who produced them from 1979 to 1982. Their first album together, Ladies Night  was their biggest hit yet, the first of three consecutive platinum albums, with the Top Ten singles "Too Hot" and the title track. Celebrate was released in 1979 and spawned Kool & the Gang's only number one hit, "Celebration," an anthem favoured by thousands at ball games, wedding receptions and even astronauts in space. The group produced several more hits, including the single "Get Down on It." Between 1983 and 1985, the band had a pair of number two hits with "Joanna" and "Cherish.” Kool & The Gang remained a going concern throughout the 2000s, teaming up with many younger artists. Fellow co-founders Ronald Bell and Dennis D.T Thomas both passed away in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The album "Perfect Union" was completed with both musicians and was released during the latter year. It was promoted with extensive touring, including performances in 2022 with the German Philharmonic Orchestra. Just ahead of their 60thanniversary, Kool & the Gang quickly returned in 2023 with the album "People Just Wanna Have Fun" led by the single "Let's Party." Kool & The Gang remain the most sampled group in the world. Their longevity is a testament to their talents and Robert ‘Kool' Bell fills us in on all the ins and outs of their journey this week. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks with Alex Young of UCLA and James Lee of the University of Minnesota about quantitative genetics and its relationship to complex traits and the genomic revolution. Young, trained as a mathematician, and Lee, trained as a psychologist, have both converged upon research programs exploring the role of genetics in generating variation in human behavior and disease. First, the trio reviews quantitative genetics' modern basis in R. A. Fisher's 1918 paper The Correlation between Relatives on the Supposition of Mendelian Inheritance, and how the field emerged from the same intellectual root as population genetics in the first decades of the 20th century. They then discuss phenomena closely associated with quantitative characteristics: polygenicity, heritability and the central limit theorem. Razib also outlines the role of population genetic parameters like mutation, selection and drift in shaping the distribution of any given trait, particularly the characteristic's variation and median values. After a deep dive into major concerns like the difference between heritability in the “broad sense” and “narrow sense,” what additive genetic variance is and why it's so important to evolution and applied breeding and contemporary heritability estimates of traits like height and intelligence using twin studies and family-based genomic analyses, the conversation concludes with a discussion of Gregory Clark's new PNAS paper, The inheritance of social status: England, 1600 to 2022. What are its implications? Why did it ignite a firestorm on social media? Lee in fact contributed a comment on the paper to PNAS, while Young has tackled its methods and conclusions on social media. In a conversation that stretches on for over two hours, Razib, Lee and Young touch upon many aspects of a discipline that combines the statistical insights of the 20th century with the genomic technologies of the 21st. Lee also expounds on a result from one of his papers that didn't make it into the final publication due to reviewer skepticism: what he calls a “beer-chugging phenotype” reported from the study of twins.

On today's episode, we're thrilled to be joined once again by friend-of-the-show Dr. Jim Brown, Jr., Associate Professor of English and Director of the Digital Studies Center at Rutgers-Camden. While Jim is mainly known to us as an expert in digital rhetorical studies, today we speak to him about his experience as outgoing president of the Camden chapter of Rutgers' faculty union, the AAUP-AFT, amid its recent historic labor strike and contract negotiations. The Rutgers faculty strike was a massive success, earning pay increases and structural bargaining changes that will redound not only to the benefit of Rutgers' precarious faculty but also to colleagues at peer institutions–including, perhaps, at your own university, listener! In a wide-ranging conversation, Calvin picks Jim's brain about the general duties of serving as a union chapter president, the events leading up to the April strike (including the university president's threat of a legal injunction), the details of the union's victories, the broader issue of neoliberalism in academic labor, and the challenges of forging solidarity across so many different job categories (e.g. tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track teaching faculty, adjunct faculty, graduate faculty, and graduate researchers–all across many different disciplines). Finally, Jim explains how he applied his rhetorical training to the strike and negotiations, and how the strike and negotiations continue to influence his digital rhetoric research. What are the benefits and risks of transhumanist technologies, and why are they so taboo? How do we legislate to avoid existential risks, without holding back too much the enormous possible benefits? How do we secure the mental health, rights and equal access of the public as it inevitably rolls out? So today we have the tricky and somewhat taboo topic of how to ethically guide the ever-increasing application of transhumanist technologies. With the recent advances in bio-technology, and some technologies already making their way into our bodies, it seems that the move towards a transhumanist vision of how to improve our standard of living is already well under way. So the question now is how do we educate ourselves the public and legislate tech corporations and governments, to be sure that people's mental and physical health, access to opportunities, and personal freedoms are not being compromised in the gold-rush.    Fortunately our guest today is a sociologist and bioethicist with over 25 years of debating exactly these kind of questions. He is the executive director of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies or IEET, and he is the Associate Provost for Institutional research, Assessment and Planning at the University of Massachusetts Boston, James Hughes. He is a Buddhist and techno-optimist, and was executive director of the World Transhumanist Organisation from 2004-2006. He argues for a democratic transhumanism in which human enhancement technologies should only be allowed if available to everyone, with respect for the rights of the individuals to control their own bodies. He's the writer of many articles and papers and the author of the book,“Citizen Cyborg: Why democratic societies must respond to the redesigned human of the future”. He is currently working on another book about moral enhancement, tentatively titled “Cyborg Buddha: Using neurotechnology to become better people”. Being a techno-optimist and futurist myself, yet extremely cautious of mankind's reckless and often blind curiosity when developing technology, I felt it was an important time to take a balanced multi-perspectival look into the ethics and policy development of transhumanist technologies. The interview offered me a process of re-evalutation of my own preconceptions and triggers, so I hope it helps you question your own opinions on this complex topic.  What we discuss: 00:00 Intro 08:00 Difficulty accepting our inevitable transhumanist future 14:00 The taboo of transhumanism and debating toxic issues 19:45 It's not the tech that's the risk but the way we use it and legislate it: Max Tegmark 33:20 The History of Transhumanism 44:50 Is Eugenics connected to Transhumanism? 51:00 The roadmap towards markets rolling out transhumanist technologies  52:30 The Kurzweilian paradigm: Smaller, smarter and faster  55:45 Backing up memories - replacing and supplementing brain function 57:00 Instantiating brain backups in robot bodies, cloned bodies or computers 58:45 The Metaverse and brain-internet interfaces assessed 01:03:00 Augmented reality will be more popular than virtual reality 01:06:00 Technology interfering with the evolution of brains and culture 01:10:00 Selective scientific publication about the negative mental health outcomes 01:21:00 Neurolink: brain computer internet interfaces assessed 01:27:00 Gene therapy assessed: the risks of yet further inequality of wealth and power 01:43:50 The Singularity explained 01:56:20 Inequality leads to dangerous conflict VS Transnational collaboration leads to peace References: James J Hughes ‘Citizen Cyborg' Nick Bostrum - ‘A History of Transhumanist thought' paper The Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies IEET

The Cleveland Torso Murders, brought to you by Alaina!!! This is definitely a gnarly case that dates back to the 1930s when torsos started popping up left and right. Many bodies were never identified and to this day the identity of the Mad Butcher is unknown. Part 1 will cover the first six bodies to turn up in the area of Kingsbury Run and will touch upon the arrival of a fancy new inspector in town to lead the case. Imagine for a moment that you are watching your loved one slowly deteriorate. They can no longer remember your name, what they did yesterday, what to do with their keys, or even how to brush their teeth. As the disease progresses, they become more and more withdrawn, until eventually, they can no longer recognize the faces of their loved ones. It's a heart-wrenching experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone. This is the reality for millions of people around the world who are affected by Alzheimer's disease. While there is no cure for Alzheimer's, there is hope. New research is providing insights into how we can better treat the disease. One such study has found that targeting amyloid beta could be more effective than previously thought.Amyloid-positive carriers of autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease-causing mutations were put under observation for 3 years. The study found that higher levels of soluble Aβ42 predicted a lower risk of progression to cognitive impairment to a greater extent than lower levels of brain amyloid. In other words, it showed that treating Alzheimer's disease by targeting amyloid beta could be more effective than previously thought. This is an important finding that could change the way we approach Alzheimer's disease treatment in the future. For me, these hits close to home. My mother, mother-in-law, my brother-in-law, neighbor, sister's mother-in-law, and I have watched as the disease slowly robbed families of their memories, their ability to communicate, and eventually their mobility. To see that there might be a way to target the disease more effectively is very exciting. It gives me hope that one day we might be able to slow down or even stop the progression of Alzheimer's and Give people like me and your loved ones some of their precious memories back.Today my guest is Dr. Alberto Espay. Alberto Espay is a professor and endowed chair at the University of Cincinnati's James J. and Joan A. Gardner Center for Parkinson's disease. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed research articles and 8 books, including Common Movement Disorders Pitfalls and Brain Fables: The Hidden History of Neurodegenerative Diseases and a Blueprint to Conquer Them.Espay has served as Chair of the Movement Disorders Section of the American Academy of Neurology, Associate Editor of the Movement Disorders journal, and on the Executive Committee of the Parkinson Study Group.
