Creatively Down and Dirty is our new podcast series where we deep-dive with one creator into one project. Prepare to hear it all, from what sparked the initial idea from the high-highs to the low-lows during the making of it and ultimately, how it got released out into the wide world. What began as a commission for a tour documentary turned into Antony Crook's debut feature film, and all because of a global pandemic! In this very special episode, we caught up with Antony amidst the madness of SXSW, where he premiered If the Stars had a Sound, celebrating legendary Scottish band Mogwai.Originally from Manchester and now based in Upstate New York with his family, Antony started out as a photographer, and has shot icons from David Hockney to Snoop Dogg. He then made the leap into filmmaking with a music video for his friend's band, Mogwai, which went viral on Nowness over a decade ago. Now he's come full circle with this film that reflects the personal relationships, integrity and creativity that went into the making of it, and it's been perfectly summarised by The Austin Chronicle as “A true underdog story and a breathtaking look at community-building”.From throwing out the rulebook to being given Mogwai's music stems, from sifting through days of GoPro footage to sourcing funding to inviting fans to be part of the journey…Antony reveals the depth, detail and devotion it takes to get a project of this scale off the ground and into the world.“I didn't want the film to be like anything else out there. Mogwai have always done their own thing, their way, and this film had to be consistent with that”If the Stars had a Sound is a must-watch and screens later this month at various festivals, including Sheffield DocFest and Raindance Film Festival. MAYA is opening in several theaters and VOD on January 26th, so I thought it would be fun to re-release this episode. Social impact films are increasingly more common, something I imagine that I'll highlight more as we go through season 2, and MAYA is a good example of a film touching on an important issue. You can here for more information on screenings: https://www.artists4change.org/Enjoy and see you on Tuesday, January 23rd.BenI talk with Julia Verdin, the multi-hyphenate writer and director of the new film MAYA.When you think of a social impact film, you may think school project. But in your her new film MAYA, Julia put in the research and the dedication to her craft to make sure you'll learn something and be deeply entertained. MAYA had its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival in London in October, and opens in select theaters and video in demand in late January, 2024. It deals gently with the topic of sex trafficking, and some of the acting performances, especially Rumer Willis, has stuck with me, along with the score and certainly the direction. We discuss her career, how to break into social impact filmmaking, the challenges of casting real-life, say, police officers, and the importance of keeping a positive attitude. As you'll hear from Julia, changing the world for the better is certainly difficult, but it doesn't mean it can't be fun. Links:Artists for Change (https://www.artists4change.org/)MAYA Website (https://www.artists4change.org/filmprojects/maya/)Julia Verdin Rough Diamond Productions (https://www.roughdiamondproductions.net/julia-verdin/)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content

Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling may be America's last great joke teller. His savant-like ability to remember every joke he's heard since he was eight years old, coupled with his lightning-fast wit and infectious laugh, has established him as a comedy icon. Famous for being the head writer of the Howard Stern show for 18 years, even more infamous for leaving that position, Jackie's story is fascinating, funny, and heartwarming. And in an age of political correctness, he still helps us belly-laugh at ourselves, and the world around us, with a kindness and sincerity that defuses his unfiltered punch lines. In the feature documentary JOKE MAN we follow Jackie's improbable journey - from fledgling days of comedy on Long Island, through his time as one of the “Beatles of Radio,” to his success as an author and actor. We hear from friends and fellow entertainers including Willie Nelson, Penn Jillette, Billy West, Artie Lang, Marc Cuban, Sean Young and former Stern show staffers who give us their take on what makes Jackie truly unique. JOKE MAN is a universal story of self-discovery, grit and how humor is the biggest key to authentic happiness.JOKE MAN is produced and directed by Ian Karr. Karr is the founder of the creative and content-driven production agency, IKA Collective. IKA's credits encompass television series, promos, commercials and original digital content. Notable clients include AMC Networks, WB/Discovery, Showtime, FOX, Hallmark Channel, United Airlines and NBC/Universal. Karr and IKA Collective have played integral roles in the successful launches and promotion of hit television series including Better Call Saul, Empire, Gotham, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Weeds, Dexter and Californication. The company received a Clio for its work on FX's American Horror Story: Cult. In addition to filmmaking, Karr spent 8 years at Sirius XM as co-host of Jackie's Joke Hunt, which aired on the Howard Stern Channels. JOKE MAN is produced and edited by Ronni Thomas. Thomas began his career with horror icons Troma, and in 2003 produced Hey Is Dee Dee Home alongside maverick filmmaker Lech Kowlaski. In 2020 he directed The Broken and the Bad, commissioned by AMC and the producers of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His 2017 short film Walter Potter: The Man Who Married Kittens was nominated for best short doc at the Raindance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. His feature debut, The Kybalion, premiered in 2021 and won best documentary and best director at Italy's Life Beyond Life Film Festival.

My guest this week is international best-selling author Dr. Caroline Cauchi. Caroline has written 9 novels, including the modern day fairy tale "The Drowning of Arthur Braxton," which was subsequently made into a feature film that won Best UK feature at the Raindance Film Festival. She is also head of book editing at BubbleCow and is currently the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Liverpool University. Caroline's latest novel, Mrs. Van Gogh, is the story of twenty-eight year old Johanna Van Gogh-Bonger, sister-in-law to artist Vincent Van Gogh. It's through her eyes that we meet the Van Gogh brothers: charming Theo and unstable, drug-addled, starving artist Vincent. What became of Vincent's art after their deaths is thanks, in large part, to Johanna, and yet we know so little about her. In our conversation, Caroline explains what drew her to Johanna, what new insights she learned into Vincent, the photograph that inspired it all, and so much more. Today's episode features an in-depth conversation on a wide range of topics with Award-winning Actress, Writer, Director & Author, KATIE BOLAND. Chosen by Elle Canada as one of the three Canadians to watch, as an actress she has more than 80 credits to her name. A multiple award winner, she's won a Canadian Screen Award, was a TIFF Rising Star, a Birks Diamond Woman In Film, named Best Emerging Actress by the Toronto Film Screen and one of Playbacks Ten To Watch. Long Story, Short a ten-episode web-series Boland created and wrote based on her collection of personal essays premiered on Hulu and was recently re-released on Youtube and garnered hundreds of thousands of hits and called “the best new thing on the internet." For her performance, Boland won a Canadian Screen Award. Long Story, Short was nominated for Best Webseries at the Raindance Film Festival. Also an author, Boland's collection of short stories, Eat Your Heart Out was chosen by the Globe and Mail as one of three hot summer reads, “Actress-turned-writer Katie Boland is a notable new voice in Canadian fiction...a vibrant collection, populated by well-drawn characters who are broken but bursting with life. Reminiscent of Hemingway's sharp minimalism, paired with Kerouac's verve, Eat Your Heart Out tackles being alive in the here and now, with sterling writing and stellar voices. Boland is a bold new old-soul.” Boland's directorial debut, short film Lolz-Ita, that she wrote and starred in, had it's North American premiere at the Austin Film Festival and was nominated for Best Narrative Short. It was also a part of TIFF's Short Cuts: Share Her Journey, which highlights the “most exciting emerging female film makers in the world” as well as the Whistler Film Festival where it was nominated for the EDA Short Film Award which recognizes female film makers. It was nominated for jury prizes at the Dallas International Film Festival and Cucalorus. It was also chosen as Short Of the Week, who said, “Boland portrays the title character with commendable subtlety, fleshing out the confusion of the young woman compellingly. It's a complicated duality to inhabit... Her performance has the power to make or break the film, and Boland wows.” Most recently, it was chosen as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Boland is currently in post production on a new short Twins and she directed, wrote and starred in the pilot ReFrame for Refinery 29 x Kate Spade. Boland was the youngest person chosen by Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly to be on a panel of cultural experts who helped steer a sweeping review of cultural policies. Recently, Boland was also on the cover of IndieScreen magazine as one of Canada's “most impressive young producers.” Katie splits her time between Toronto and Los Angeles. She has two feature films to be released in the coming year and three television series she wrote and created in development at CTV, Chorus and UCP. She is currently editing her feature debut We're All In This Together that she wrote, directed, produced and starred as twins in. This wonderful film "Carving the Divine" shows us that the path to mastery of this ancient art is as much a spiritual discipline as it is the learning of a skill. The profound yet stern compassion of the teacher, and the sincerity of the apprentices as they seek to uncover the images within the wood, are wonderfully shown. Watching this film, one may grasp how the art of the Busshi is not simply to produce sculpture: it is itself a Way of life and wisdom, in which the images mirror the artists' own hearts."- Meido Moore, Rinzai Zen priest Abbot at Korinji Rinzai Zen MonasteryWhat is Carving The Divine about?Carving the Divine is a documentary film that offers a rare look into a 1400-year-old Buddhist woodcarving tradition and the practitioners struggling to preserve its legacy in a rapidly changing Japan.Carving the Divine has become the official selection for 30 film festivals, showing in a total of 22 countries, and won awards at 13 festivals worldwide, such as winning the Best Director Award of a Foreign Language Documentary at World Cinema Milan and premiering at the famous Raindance Film Festival in London.Carving the Divine Awards: World Cinema Milan Festival 2019 - Best Director of a Foreign Language Documentary Award Art Quake Kyoto 2019 - Best Feature Length Film Award Helsinki Education Film Festival International - Best Historical Feature Award Australia Independent Film Festival 2019 - Jury Award Arte Non Stop Festival 2019 - Best Screenplay Award Religion Today Film Festival 2019 - In the Spirit of Faith Award and commendation Award Japan Indies Film Festival 2020 - Best Documentary Feature Award Puerto Rico International Film Festival ENFOQUE 2020  - The mention of Honor of Best International Documentary Film New York Interfaith Film & Music Festival  2020  - Best International Documentary award Rhode Island International Film Festival Roving Eye 2021 - Best Documentary First Prize  Rhode Island International Film Festival 2021 -  Flickers International Vision Award: First Prize World Independent Cinema Award (WICA) 2021 - Best Cinematography in a Documentary - Best Director of a Foreign Language Documentary Buddhist Arts and Film Festival 2022 - Best Documentary Award, Boulder ColoradoThe art of Busshi is one of the most significant cultural legacies of Japan.  Yet at this point, this tradition is virtually unknown to the Western World.   These statues have been an integral part of Japanese culture for 1400 years for a reason.  And it will be my great pleasure and privilege that Carving the Divine will be the first experience of these cultural treasures for many people around the world.More information please visit: http://www.carvingthedivine.comhttps://www.facebook.com/CarvingTheDivine/https://www.instagram.com/carvingthedivine/https://twitter.com/CarvingDivineSupport the show

It captures the hardships and aspirations of the current generation of apprentice-artisans training under the harsh-yet-kind tutelage of a master carver. Heart-warming and intimate, "Carving the Divine" unveils the secret world of master-disciple relationships among sculptors of religious icons. It also shines a spotlight on the time-honored traditions of passing down ancient techniques to a new generation. Has Japan retained enough reverence for the demanding learning process that takes years of thankless dedication to just begin to develop mastery? I sat breathlessly through “Carving the Divine”, silently cheering on those few committed artists as they approached gaining the exquisite skill of depicting through carved wood the most sublime of Buddhist sacred images. Will they make it? Can they accept the firm and relentless coaching from their masters? Filmmaker Yujiro Seki pulls aside the curtain and shows us nakedly the disciplined world of the busshi, master carvers of Buddhist wonder. An amazingly touching film!"- An-Shu Stephen K. PETA's documentary, "Test Subjects" is winning hearts and minds on the film festival circuit. The film depicts three scientists who found the moral courage to leave vivisection behind and cross over to fight for the animals. After premiering at the famed Raindance Film Festival in England, it has been nominated for best documentary short at the Lancaster International Film Festival. In honor of that, we reprise an episode on one of the scientists featured in the documentary, Dr. Frances Cheng. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Cheng talks about how she came from Taiwan to the U.S. to become a scientist.  As a graduate student, she did a test on saturated fats on rats and learned that the physiology of rats and humans are so different that too often it renders animal tests useless. It's the reason 95 percent of drugs tested on rats fail in human trials. Cheng talks about how that fact began a new emotional journey for her as a scientist. She now regrets having experimented on animals but is haunted by her past actions and can't talk about it without feeling the pain of her test subjects. Cheng now works for PETA and is proud to say she has now saved more animals than she tortured and killed as a researcher.  SEE THE DOCUMENTARY NOW Go to PETA.org for more information. Working project title: Symbiosis/Dysbiosis. After the presentations Tosca and digital technologist Sara Lisa Vogl connected and later began work on the Symbiosis/Dysbiosis project. Bringing in Neuroscientist/coder Brendan Lehman, Photogrammetric/new media artist Allison Moore, VR world builder Jason Stapleton, Sound designer Penelope Walcott, AR collaborator Peter Henderson, and early involved Arduino robot builder Lorena Salomé. Symbiosis/Dysbiosis is generously funded by the Goethe-Institute Montreal, Canada Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council with sponsorship from bHaptics and ARTIVIVE. Tosca and Sara Lisa thought it would be fun to participate in the A MAZE. / Berlin festival but knew the Sym/Dys project was far too large not to mention myriad COVID19 restrictions plus, looking at VRChat as a platform et viola! a Mycelia mood board branched out. Sara Lisa was introduced to the Meta Crew South Africa while working for SXSW and felt that this amazing group of creators might be interested in working on a Mycelia world - and they were!! Concept for Mycelia was, of course, to bring living mycelium bio-sonification into VRChat with reactive audio aspects via a live human & nonhuman electronic music performance. Sara Lisa had been learning how to work with a Sports Pole in VR and thought she could add to the performance with an interpretive full-body tracked dance as spores above Tosca's avatar. Living mycelium and human performances have taken place for A MAZE. / Berlin The Venice Film Festival 2021- VR Expanded and the Raindance Film Festival where Mycelia won the Spirit of the Festival award. nanotopia will be releasing the Mycelia performances soon. Here is a preview! xoxox Happy New Year 2022!
