Remakes continue to proliferate on our screens. Over the last few months, we've had live action remakes in cinemas of classic animations Snow White, Lilo And Stitch, and How To Train Your Dragon, along with legacy reboots of the horror hit I Know What You Did Last Summer and DC's Superman, and - coming soon - a new spin on the 1980s comedy The Naked Gun.So is this all just evidence of a dearth of creativity in Hollywood? Or are there some artistically valid reasons to re-make existing films? And can a remake ever be better than the original? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode delve into the past, present and future of the remake. Mark speaks to critic Anne Billson about the remakes she considers worthy of our attention, from Brian De Palma's Scarface to John Carpenter's The Thing. And he also talks with Jim McBride who, in 1983, directed Breathless - a remake of Jean-Luc Godard's French New Wave classic A Bout de Souffle, which Mark has long considered superior to the original.Ellen talks to TV critic Roxana Hadadi about what television can bring to the remake party - and about the TV series that managed to improve on their source material. And Ellen also speaks to Noah Hawley, showrunner of the multi-Emmy winning Fargo and upcoming Alien: Earth TV series, about the creative possibilities of TV reboots. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Dregs shares the story of the day he started doing graffiti. It was also when he began experimenting with rapping. Dregs talks about all the “cool shit in The City” back then, the early 2000s. From sports and music to the aforementioned underworld of San Francisco, SF was lit. It was a time when you could simply step outside your home and find something or someone or some people. You could take a random Muni ride and let stuff happen. And it happened all over town, with creativity pouring out of so many corners. For Dregs, tagging happened first. He started hanging out more in The Sunset, which was quieter than his own hood. He and his buddies would tag, hang out in the park with their boomboxes, drink 40s, and freestyle. One of those buddies had a computer audio-editing program and a cheap mic (RIP Radio Shack). That friend sent him a track over AIM and it blew young Dregs away. Then he learned that two other guys wanted to battle. Dregs hopped on a bus to Lawton Park to join in. It was his first rap battle. The crew that battled that day ended up uniting and making more and more music together. They formed a tagging crew called GMC (Gas Mask Colony), which didn't last long as as a tagging crew, but they kept the name for their rap group. But the group splintered. As mentioned, Dregs ended up at ISA in Potrero. He got into a DJ program and honed his skills. Soon, it was time to get into a studio to lay down some tracks. They recorded their first song and people liked it. The crew of four included several different ethnicities and neighborhoods across San Francisco, so they had widespread reach. We take a sidebar to discuss how Dregs got his name. It's a story that involves the movie Scarface. Because of time, I ask Dregs to walk us quickly through the years between getting underway with hip-hop and starting his show, History of The Bay. He did music with his GMC posse as well as some solo projects. Days of hanging out and drinking 40s gave way to adult-life realities—jobs and such. They hadn't figured out a way to make money off their art. Dregs went to City College and then spent two years at UC Riverside. He came back and worked as a youth counselor in the Tenderloin. At another job in TL, a woman in supportive housing where Dregs worked had a psychotic breakdown. He was the only employee around, and even though he was about to leave for the day, he helped her out. The next day, a boss type thanked Dregs, but told him he'd never get properly compensated for what he did until or unless he had a bachelor's degree. And so he enrolled at SF State. He was in his late-twenties at this point, and did better in school than he had ever done. He was a straight-A student, in fact. He took a heavy courseload. It was the first time he'd had Black teachers. One of them advised Dregs to go to graduate school. He looked through the graduate-level programs available and decided that law was his best fit. And so off he went, to law school in Davis. He did well at this level, also. He graduated, passed the California bar, and got hired by a firm. He was making good money and thought about saying good-bye to making music. But then the folks he worked with at the law firm convinced him not to. One of the first cuts he did in that era was a collaboration with Andre Nikatina called “Fog Mode.” When the song dropped, it was the pandemic. Dregs had been doing his law work from home. It “sucked,” he tells me. But the track took on a life of its own. He realized amid it all that it was time to go for it with his art. One of the first steps was to get his social media ramped up. Some people suggested TikTok, but Dregs wasn't sure what content to throw up on that app. Others said, “Talk about you, talk about your interests.” He looked around and realized that no one out there was really talking about the SF/Bay hip-hop Dregs grew up on, or the prolific taggers he ran with. Around this time, in December 2021, his dad passed away. In the early stages of his grief, Dregs figured it was once again time to quit art and turn his energy and attention to taking care of his mom. But then something happened, something that some of us who've experienced loss can possibly relate to. In March 2022, Dregs launched History of The Bay on TikTok. With his music and social media popping, his law work took a back seat. Folks in his firm took notice and laid Dregs off. It was for the best. Find Dregs online at his website or on social media @dregs_one. Get History of The Bay on any podcast app. We end the podcast with Dregs' take on our theme this season—keep it local.

Send us a textSPECIAL NOTE: SEASON 15 OF THE GOOD, THE POD AND THE UGLY CELEBRATES THE USE OF THE PRACTICAL AND DIGITAL EFFECT KNOWN AS THE SQUIB. IRL GUN VIOLENCE IS INTOLERABLE AND RENOUNCED BUT... CINEMATIC VIOLENCE WILL BE CELEBRATED IN A WAY WILL DISTURB SOME LISTENERS. Season 15's temporal pincer movement is inverted with this week's pairing to present its earlier film first. So, one week early, we present to you SCARFACE (1983) with returning guest Erik Van Der Wolf from the Blood & Popcorn podcast filling in for Jack who had a boat to catch. After last week's meager showing with First Blood, we return to the blood-filled squib in full force in a movie whose violent reputation Erik disputes, taking a chainsaw to arguments by contemporary critics and noting the various cutaways and reaction shows in lieu of direct onscreen violence. He also makes a case that director Brian De Palma shows uncharacteristic restraint in camera flourishes. What's unrestrained— agreed then and now—is the profanity, clocked at 1.32/minute “f's” given, timed by some film nerd and diligently regurgitated by one of your chin beard hosts who watched the Blu-ray commentary. Typically, we make a halfhearted attempt here in the show notes for a plot recap, but we all know the story of Scarface who's got his word and his balls. This 1980's remake marks a rare confluence of film and actual contemporary events as its Scarface, aka cocaine cowboy Tony Montana played by Al Pacino, is a Cuban refugee, mapping the original immigrant story of the 1932 movie onto real Florida violence. The film is also credited as giving Michelle Pfiefer her breakout role (if one discounts Grease II) in portraying coke whore arm candy. And actual Cuban immigrant and total hottie Steven Bauer plays Montana's bestie (and friend's sister-fucker) Manny Ray. Blood packets explode during a hotel drug deal gone wrong and again when Montana promotes himself over his boss's dead body and then again when given cocaine super powers at the end of the film as Scarface holds off a mercenary army of hitmen, but surprising no squib explodes when Montana shoots Ray in a fit of rage for what could be interpreted as incestual cockblocking. But you knew the plot already. Listen as adult boys who grew up in the VHS era (and Thomas) discuss a film that guest Erik loves and the others find a lesser entry in the De Palma 80s filmography. Guest Erik brings a reread of the Oliver Stone screenplay and filmic muscle memory to recite scenes from the formative flick; Ryan stays bullish on the original black and white gangster picture (and on the film Two of a Kind, the 1983 feature that reunited John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John after Grease I), mainly wishing the De Palma film was closer to the original film's runtime; Ken warms to the film and to Erik; and Thomas might have an opinion after his first watch but is more interested in the sequel videogame for the PS2 and prequel novels by comic book and erotic vampire author L.A. Banks. Next week, Jack returns to discuss the school shooter film Elephant. His selections include: Gladiator, The Patriot, A Beautiful Mind, Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan, American Sniper, Hidden Figures, Top Gun: Maverick, and Avatar. He emphasizes true stories, war films, musicals, and movies with strong moral or patriotic themes. Personal Movie Preferences: Cruz shares his favorite films (The Princess Bride, The Godfather, Scarface, Fletch), and discusses his love for musicals and classic comedies. He recounts personal anecdotes, including taking his mother to Broadway shows and watching Saving Private Ryan and Dallas Buyers Club. What makes us keep watching a show three seasons past its prime? Why do some critically acclaimed series leave us cold while others become personal obsessions? The Powers Point crew tackles these questions and more in this entertaining deep-dive into viewing habits with special guest Mo.The conversation flows naturally from Keith's liquid diet adventures and Jim's buffet experiences to a passionate analysis of Breaking Bad's legacy. When Mo confesses he couldn't finish Better Call Saul despite loving the original series, it sparks a thoughtful examination of how spin-offs often struggle to capture the magic that made their predecessors great. The group contemplates whether Walter White truly died and draws fascinating parallels to other controversial series finales like The Sopranos.Everyone takes turns revealing the popular shows they just couldn't connect with – from Big Bang Theory to Seinfeld – creating a judgment-free space to admit when critical darlings simply don't resonate. These confessions lead to a broader discussion about what makes entertainment personally meaningful versus universally acclaimed. When the topic turns to potential Scarface sequels, the hosts debate whether modern filmmaking techniques could ever recapture the gritty authenticity that defined the original. The episode takes an unexpected nostalgic turn when Keith reveals he's been watching Scott's old wrestling videos on YouTube, leading to hilarious stories from their wrestling days including unexpected table crashes and colorful commentary. Throughout it all, the camaraderie between hosts shines through, making listeners feel like they're simply hanging out with friends discussing their latest streaming obsessions.Whether you're looking for your next binge-worthy recommendation or validation that it's okay to dislike that show everyone else loves, this episode delivers with humor, honesty and the Powers Point promise: everything is on the table except religion and politics. Pacino said when you make $10 million dollars for a movie you don't get $10 million dollars. After lawyers, agents and the government take their share you end up with around $4 million. His living expenses alone were at least that amount before he put his own cash into arthouse films which made no money and in many cases were not even distributed. Things were out of control as his staff and expenses expanded. He owned two cars, but was paying for sixteen, along with multiple cell phones, salaries and a $400,000 a year for a landscaper on a house he didn't even own! The list goes on and the star wasn't even signing his own cheques and his money was draining out faster than a leaking pipe. Hangers on took advantage of Pacino's generosity as his staff and expenses eventually grew beyond his means. He said, the more money he made the less he had! What can we learn from Pacino's mistakes? You don't have to be a movie star to experience the same issues. Managing your money is important whether you're making $100,000 a year or $100 million! Deremy Dove and Thomas Sena (Pop Culture Five Podcast) join for the final Martin Scorsese themed movie focus special. This week, it's the Corruption Themed Trilogy: WOLF OF WALL STREET, THE IRISHMAN & KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON! TOPICS DISCUSSED: *Why are these well-intended misfires somewhat dull & rather inaccurate? *Why does Wolf of Wall Street feel as divisive as Scarface? *Why were some of the actors in The Irishman unfairly thrown under the bus for playing underveloped characters? *Why did Scorsese get too derivative of his own style here? *And a neat clip at the end of a Scorsese 2019 BBC1 Radio Interview where he discussed the on-going arguments about running time and movie lengths.
So it's come to this... the FINAL RECKONING. We've had so many reckonings over this series but this is the last one, we promise. To help us process this reckoning we've enlisted friend of the show, past + future + current guest, and musician extraordinaire Rob McLay. There's much to talk about but before we get into the film we also discuss some other movies we've been watching lately: THE SWIMMER, BAD SHABBOS, SCARFACE, and two less-than classic Tom Cruise vehicles KNIGHT AND DAY and THE MUMMY.MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING is such a strange film; an awkward, unwieldy, exposition beast that also has two of the greatest action set pieces in the series (and cinema) history. We're all still processing the silliness so in many ways this podcast episode is more our own attempt at clarity than it is a review for you the listener. All the same, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Along the way, they're aided by pastry-chef Agatha (Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird, Little Women), who crafts the iconic Courtesan au Chocolat, and pursued by the vengeful heir Dmitri (Adrien Brody, The Pianist, Midnight in Paris). The stellar ensemble also features F. Our hosts return to the Podcave to review the episode, Catwalk.Unfortunately, it's not one that claws its way into their hearts. They both agree that the episode is surprisingly bland and forgettable, falling flat like a plank of wood.Dong Yang lets it "hang" a bit too much in this episode, as they over animate Scarface's expressions, turning him from a puppet into a real boy. Making him less creepy and more cartoonish, which undermines his intimidation. Our hosts also joke about Catwoman's cringe poetry recitals, and her apparent belief that the Tasmanian Tiger is a cat and not a marsupial. Plus, they wonder if the giant log fight between Batman and Rhino was overcompensating for something?
