In this episode of the Launch Your Box Podcast, I'm welcoming back Lauren Jacobs of The Cheerful Baker. You might remember Lauren as the incredibly talented cookie decorator who leveraged her appearance on the Christmas Cookie Challenge on Food Network to launch a cookie cutter subscription box. For years, she wondered whether her box was best suited for hobby bakers, business owners, or casual decorators. Instead of continuing to guess, she sent a short survey to her subscribers and gathered real feedback. Then she took that survey data, along with her subscriber list and demographic information, and uploaded it into ChatGPT to help her analyze it. What she received back was surprisingly detailed. It identified patterns in age, location, business ownership, and behavior that she had never clearly articulated before. For the first time, she felt confident that she understood who she was actually serving. The results didn't explode overnight, but they built steadily. She monitored her campaigns inside Ads Manager, allowed them time to optimize, and then made adjustments based on performance. One variation - a chicken-themed design - began outperforming everything else. She turned off the weaker ads and allowed Facebook to allocate the budget toward the winning creative. That single campaign brought in more than 80 new subscribers and nearly doubled her box. What changed was her understanding of acquisition cost and lifetime value. Once she understood how much it cost her to acquire a subscriber and how long that subscriber typically stayed, she stopped viewing ad spend as loss and began seeing it as investment. That shift in mindset removed a tremendous amount of fear. Then she exported four years of Shopify sales data and used ChatGPT to help her identify patterns in growth, seasonality, and subscriber behavior. The analysis revealed something powerful: her subscription had grown an average of 26% every year. It also showed clear seasonal trends in acquisition and cancellations. With that information, she built a subscriber growth forecast for the year. She matched her strongest themes with historically strong acquisition months. She set realistic monthly goals instead of vague annual hopes. And for the first time, she could see the year mapped out in front of her. Lauren's subscription box has paid for both of her sons' college tuition and living expenses. Her oldest is graduating this year. Her youngest is halfway through. Her goal was never to build a million-dollar business. It was to send her children into adulthood debt-free. And she has done exactly that. She has also grown into a confident, data-informed business owner along the way. What I love most about Lauren's journey is that she did not start out organized or analytical. She started by being creative, hopeful, and willing. Over time, she layered in systems, strategy, and data. That progression is available to anyone who is willing to implement what they learn. Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - In this morning's interview Manda Aufochs Gillespie, Executive Director of the Cortes Island Community Foundation, discusses a fund called Communitas and explains how the Cortes Foundation doubled the money for this year's Grant in Aid. The Cortes Island Community Foundation's roots go back to 2018 when, operating under the charitable umbrella of the Cortes Island Seniors Society, it raised $1.2 million for the downpayment on the 51 acre parcel in Mansons Landing now owned by the Cortes Housing Society. The Foundation obtained charitable status in 2021. Unlike more traditional foundations, it does not rely on a long-standing endowment to fund its work. Manda Aufochs Gillespie: “As some people know, because I like to say it a lot, we've only been around (as a charity) for four years and we're from a new breed of foundation that does not have money sitting in an endowment. We're a new foundation and we don't want to wait to help the community organizations and groups and volunteers and neighbours that are doing good things. There's so much to be done now.” They've been fortunate in that, over the past four years, the government and Community Foundations of Canada have provided funding to distribute directly through community foundations to local groups. So the Cortes Foundation was able to distribute $100,000 to different Cortes organizations doing COVID recovery and between $200,000 and $300,000 to issues related to gender equity. "We also have been practicing community granting by helping adjudicate and advise what we thought the Grant in Aid should be used for. Mark Vonesch, our Regional Director, has taken those recommendations to the Strathcona Regional District (SRD) Board for final decision making. But every year there are projects that come forward that we are not able to fund because they're not eligible for Grant in Aid, or there's just not enough money. The Grant in Aid has more or less stayed the same for years, and $25,000 does not go that far." “We were really lucky this year because a donor came to us and said, ‘Hey, we want to direct some funds into the community for our greatest need.' And we said, ‘Well, if you would trust us, what we would love to do is put this into a new fund called Communitas, where we would use it to do community granting and to engage in the process where we get community input and look at needs.'” “So when Grant in Aid came around this year, we were so excited because, for the first time ever, we had our own funds! We could give out as we wanted and leverage the Grant in Aid funds that the SRD was giving out. We used that process that we were going through anyway, and we were able to make more with what was already there. It wasn't just having more money. We could fund organizations such as the Cortes Island School Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), which had not been eligible for our Grant in Aid funding.” “The total pot we were able to give away this year was $25,000 that came from the Community Foundation via the Communitas Fund and $25,000 that came via the SRD through the Grant in Aid process, which is taxpayer dollars coming back to your community.”

AI Assisted Coding: How Spending 4x More on Code Quality Doubled Development Speed What happens when you combine nearly 30 years of engineering experience with AI-assisted coding? In this episode, Eduardo Ferro shares his experiments showing that AI doesn't replace good practices—it amplifies them. The result: doubled productivity while spending four times more on code quality. Vibe Coding vs Production-Grade AI Development "Vibe coding is flow-driven, curiosity-based way of building software with AI. It's less about meticulously reviewing each line of code, and more about letting the AI steer the process—perfect for quick experiments, side projects, MVPs, and prototypes."   Edu draws a clear distinction between vibe coding and production AI development. Vibe coding is exploration-focused, where you let AI drive while you learn and discover. Production AI coding is goal-focused, with careful planning, spec definition, and identification of edge cases before implementation. Both use small, safe steps and continuous conversation with the AI, but production code demands architectural thinking, security analysis, and sustainability practices. The key insight is that even vibe coding benefits from engineering discipline—as experiments grow, you need sustainable practices to maintain flexibility. How AI Doubled My Productivity "I was investing four times more in refactoring, cleanup, deleting code, introducing new tests, improving testability, and security analysis than in generating new features. And at the same time, globally, I think I more or less doubled my pace of work."   Edu's two-month experiment with production code revealed a counterintuitive finding: by spending 4x more time on code quality activities—refactoring, cleanup, test improvement, and security analysis—he actually doubled his overall delivery speed. The secret lies in fast feedback loops. With AI, you can implement a feature, run automated code review, analyze security, prioritize improvements, and iterate—all within an hour. What used to be a day's work happens in a single focused session, and the quality improvements compound over time. The Positive Spiral of Code Removal "We removed code, so we removed all the features that were not being used. And whenever I remove this code, the next step is to automatically try to see, okay, can I simplify the architecture."   One of the most powerful practices Edu discovered is using AI to accelerate code removal. By connecting product analytics to identify unused features, then using AI to quickly remove them, you trigger a positive spiral: removing code makes architecture changes easier, easier architecture changes enable faster feature development, which leads to more opportunities for simplification. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle that humans historically have been reluctant to pursue because removal was as expensive as creation. Preparing the System Before Introducing Change "What I want to generate is this new functionality—how should I change my system to make it super easy to introduce this one? It's not about making the change, it's about making the change easy."   Edu describes a practice that was previously too expensive: preparing the system before introducing changes. By analyzing architecture decision records, understanding the existing design, and adapting the codebase first, new features become trivial to implement. AI makes this preparation cheap enough to do routinely. The result is systems that evolve cleanly rather than accumulating technical debt with each new feature. AI as an Amplifier: The Double-Edged Sword "AI is an amplifier. People who already know how to develop software well will continue to develop it well and faster. People who did not know how to develop software well will probably get in trouble much faster than they would otherwise."   Edu's central metaphor is AI as an amplifier—it doesn't replace engineering judgment, it magnifies its presence or absence. Teams with strong practices will see accelerated improvement; teams without them will generate technical debt faster than ever. A smarter Siri? You'll be waiting a little longer.. Apple initially launched - or should that be teased? - the launch of Apple Intelligence in June, 2024. It was thought that March might be the month, but there have been further delays. Bloomberg is reporting it could be May before the start of the launch that is now though to be spread over several releases. iOS27 might see the bulk when it comes out in September. The issue is apparently that Siri doesn't always properly process queries or can take too long to handle requests. The ability for Siri to access personal data - like text messages or emails, the key selling point of Apple Intelligence - are the most likely to slip. Anthropic has raised a fresh round of funding The new round has more than DOUBLED its value from September. They've got an additional $30 billion in cash, which takes their post-money valuation to $380 billion. It's the second largest private tech funding round on record second only to OpenAI. Anthropic's Super Bowl ad which mocked Open AI's plan to add ads to their free tiers pushed Claude into the App Store's top 10 apps. Sent his FBI and Tulsi Gabbard to investigate the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, a continuation of his b.s. claims of fraud costing him a win over Joe Biden, and  Had his FBI raid the home of a reporter in violation of federal law; and, Arrested reporter Don Lemon for covering a peaceful Minneapolis protest because it “disrupted” a religious service Trump’s war on Minneapolis inspired a powerful anthem from “The Boss.” Bruce Springsteen's “The Streets of Minneapolis” pulls no punches in denouncing Trump, ICE Barbie and Stephen Miller. Trump has reportedly inserted himself in the battle for the party's gubernatorial nomination, torpedoing frontrunner John James and encouraging 78-year-old rich guy Perry Johnson's newly announced campaign.  Michigan Democrats have launched their first attack ad on independent gubernatorial candidate Mike Duggan even as the party's contests for Attorney General and Secretary of State are all but over.  A Republican dark money group is promoting one of the Democrats in next week's primary to fill a state Senate primary … with the belief that State Board of Education President Pamela Pugh would be easier to beat in the April general election. Democrats, including Saginaw Dem chair Jennifer Austin and Saginaw state Representative Amos O'Neal, are crying “foul.” Senator Elissa Slotkin says Kristi Noem has to go. In a Senate speech, Michigan's junior senator noted she had voted to confirm Noem … but the cabinet member derided as “ICE Barbie” has betrayed fundamental American values. We’re joined this week by political science guru Norm Ornstein, emeritus scholar at the conservative think-tank American Enterprise Institute with his assessment of congressional dysfunction and Trump's drive for one-person government. He is the co-author, with Thomas E. Mann, of It’s Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism. Norm is a Minnesota native. He was a child prodigy, graduating from high school when he was fourteen and from college when he was eighteen. He received his BA from the University of Minnesota and PhD in political science from the University of Michigan.  By the mid-1970s, he had become a professor of political science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., establishing a reputation as an expert on the United States Congress. Ornstein is a frequent contributor to The Washington Post, The Atlantic and the National Journal. He wrote a weekly column for Roll Call for 11 years, and was co-director of the AEI-Brookings Election Reform Project. He helped draft key parts of the 2002 Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act, also known as the McCain–Feingold Act.
