What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Martha Baillie. Martha is the author of multiple works of fiction, including the novel The Incident Report, published by Coach House Books in 2009 and longlisted for the Giller Prize. Darkest Miriam, a feature film based on that novel, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival this year and had its Canadian premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where it won the DGC Best Director prize. Her most recent book is the memoir There Is No Blue, which was published in 2023, yet again by Coach House, and recently won the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize For Nonfiction. The Guardian called the book “tough, tender, and compelling." Martha and I talk about her continuing post-award high, about strangers sharing with her their stories of mental health struggles, and about the oddity—but also delight!—of relatively late-career success. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

Without Your Head Horror Podcast with Kirsten Carthew director of Fantasia Fest favorite POLARIS The All-Female Led, Sophomore Feature From Celebrated Canadian Writer/Director KC Carthew premiered as Opening Night Film of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Quebec Set in 2144 against the harsh backdrop of a frozen wasteland, Sumi, a human child raised by Mama Polar Bear, narrowly escapes capture from a brutal Morad hunting party and sets out across the vast winter landscape. When Sumi stumbles across Frozen Girl, an unlikely friendship is forged and together they race ahead of the vindictive hunters towards the only guiding light Sumi knows, the Polaris star. A winter-set, post-apocalyptic fantasy fable set in the year 2144, POLARIS takes place in an unspecified part of the world reeling from the consequences of ecological fallout, uniquely conceived in a wholly new language and presented without subtitles. The all-female cast is impressively led by 13-year-old — who was only 11 at the time of filming — Korean-Canadian actress Viva Lee (Syfy's Deadly Class) alongside Khamisa Wilsher (Netflix's The Hollow, CW's Charmed) and veteran stage, television, and film actress Muriel Dutil (Curling, Ressac). Expanded from her award-winning short film FISH OUT OF WATER, which premiered at Fantasia in 2015, Carthew has set the stage with a magical world inspired by Greek mythology with themes incited by the urgency of the current environmental crisis and built upon the activist movement and ideology of ecofeminism. Recognized for spectacular world-building in her visual storytelling, POLARIS is Carthew's second feature following her celebrated debut THE SUN AT MIDNIGHT, which starred Kawannáhere Devery Jacobs (Reservation Dogs, Blood Quantum). --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/withoutyourhead/support

Trick 'r Treat is a 2007 American anthology horror comedy film written and directed by Michael Dougherty and produced by Bryan Singer. The film stars Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox. It relates four Halloween horror stories with a common element in them: Sam, a trick-or-treating demon wearing orange footie pajamas with a burlap sack over his head. The character makes an appearance in each of the stories whenever one of the other characters breaks a Halloween tradition.   Despite being delayed for two years and having only a limited number of screenings at film festivals, the film received much critical acclaim and has since garnered a strong cult following.   Tales of Halloween is a 2015 American comedy horror anthology film consisting of ten interlocking segments, each revolving around the titular holiday. Segments were directed by Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Lucky McKee, Andrew Kasch, Paul Solet, John Skipp, Adam Gierasch, Jace Anderson, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, Dave Parker and, in his film debut, Jack Dylan Grazer.   The film premiered on July 24, 2015, at the Fantasia International Film Festival, before receiving a limited theatrical release and through video on demand on October 16, 2015, by Epic Pictures.   Opening Credits; Introduction (1.00); Background History (43.50); Trick ‘R Treat (2009) Film Trailer (45.33); Featuring the Presentation (48.07); Let's Rate (1:19.42); Introducing a Film (1:26.34); Tales of Halloween (2015) Film Trailer (1:26.57); Lights, Camera, Action (1:29.02); How Many Stars (2:08.17); End Credits (2:18.01); Closing Credits (2:20.35)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . I was able to watch this film as part of the Fantasia International Film Festival. I knew nothing going in, picked the film solely on the title. According to IMDb Hippo, a peculiar adolescent, and his Hungarian step-sister Buttercup struggle to come of age in late 1990s America, under the roof of a mother who has been institutionalized at least once. The film was directed by Mark H. Rapaport, who co-wrote the film with Kimball Farley, who was the lead actor in the film. It also stars Lilla Kizlinger, Eliza Roberts, Jesse Pimentel, Vann Barrett and is narrated by Eric Roberts. Hippo's Drink: Ingredients 1 part Milk 1 part Gin 2 parts Mountain Dew Directions Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Pour into a nice cold highball glass. Drinking Game: Drink when... someone says “Hippo” every time Buttercup gets angry or frustrated with her brother anytime someone mentions anythng extraterrestrial something you aren't expecting happens As always, drink responsibly and with friends. This is our 40th episode of Spill your guts and the final episode of season 2. We will be taking a few weeks to recharge our batteries and prepare season 3. Also, we'll be catching up with folks and checking out some new movies at the amazing Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal this week and next week so we'll be taking you with us. Thanks to my incredibly hard-working team for a fantastic season and to all of you for sitting down with us. Much more guts to be spilled in season 3 and once again, thank you for joining us. Our guest today is one of the genres great showmen. His films are whacky, funny, boundary pushing, musically charged, sexual, gruesome, occasionally satirical but never mean spirited but most of all, a hell of a lot of fun. There is no one else like him and no other films like his. Today we are joined by the hilarious, thoughtful and wonderful…  Richard Elfman. Richard is very much an auteur. His 1980 cult classic “Forbidden Zone” is an upside-down topsy-turvy musical adventure of madness. It is basically impossible to classify. Not really a horror film, nor musical, nor fantasy… it's a Richard Elfman film and that means you're in for a good time. With masterful scores by his brother and frequent collaborator, the legendary Danny Elfman, Richard has a filmography of impossible to classify movies that all carry his distinct signature as filmmaker. Richard's films also have a strong DIY quality that speaks to his determination to get his films made the way he wants to make them. I can only imagine what a pitch meeting with studio execs for “Aliens, clowns & geeks” would be like. Actually, that would be awesome. I'd love to be in that meeting.  Richard discusses his approach to filmmaking including the joys of bringing your family and friends onboard, his two personas, finding his tribe as the director of San Francisco transvestite performance group “The Cockettes” and founding the beloved “Mystics Knights of the Oingo Boingo”. As an added bit of awesomeness, Richard has provided us with musical tracks by Danny Elfman, Ego Plum and Radioactive Chicken Heads from his new film “Bloody Bridget”. “Bloody Bridget” is absolutely insane and a total blast. See it with an audience if you can and keep an eye out for a kick ass performance by Richard's wife Anastasia Elfman in the titular role. Let's take a trip into the forbidden so with the maestro of madness, Richard Elfman! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Don't wig out, but prepare for a whiter-- *ahem* WIDER audience, because we're discussing Justin Simien's horror comedy Bad Hair (2020)! Weaving her way into this discussion is Fantasia International Film Festival programmer and horror journalist Carolyn Mauricette! Join us as we try to figure out the many, many things this film is trying to do, praising the intent behind most of the creative decisions while lamenting the confused execution. Is it self-aware camp? Is it self-serious horror? Is it wasting Vanessa Williams? ....Yes? Questions? Comments? Snark? Franklin Ritch is an independent filmmaker, writing, directing, and editing with a passion for unique ideas and sharp storytelling. Since high school, Franklin has developed a vast filmography of short films, web series, and features. Collaborating with Emmy-winning cinematographer, Britt McTammany, Franklin's early short, BEDRIDDEN (Fantastic Fest, 2018), kicked off a marathon of short film productions that included STILL LIFE (Sleeping Giant Fest 2019), POWERFUL (SERFF 2019), THE 27 DEATHS (Fantastic Fest 2021), and many more. In 2022, Franklin premiered his debut feature film, THE ARTIFICE GIRL (XYZ), starring sci-fi legend Lance Henriksen, at Fantasia International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Audience Award for Best International Feature and later took top prize at its European premiere in Trieste, Italy. Franklin has since been named one of the “25 New Faces of Independent Film” by Filmmaker Magazine, and his work continues to be recognized and revered in outlets such as Screen Anarchy, Movie Maker Magazine, and The Film Stage. THE ARTIFICE GIRL had its US premiere at SXSW in March and currently holds a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Franklin is now developing an ambitious follow-up feature film, with several more screenplays and a rumored TV series on the horizon.
