Fantasia International Film Festival mercifully brings UNHOLY NIGHT to us, likely to get our minds off of this 100-degree (37-degree, for you Celsius-users) weather.At an Italian family's Christmas Eve dinner, festivities are interrupted when the grandmother, deceased for a few years, returns, with an undead look and feral rage. It's then up to the awkward 30-something Gino (Marc BenDavid) to muster up some cojones and save not only his family, but his ex-girlfriend Rene (Shailene Garnett), who lives next door and may be confronted by some other undead elders...The movie seems like it'll be a goofy, zombie-splaterring time and, in some ways, it is. But what I loved about Gabriele's screenplay and direction is how it uses the concept to pursue questions of familial expectations, managing a set of regrets, acquiring the bravery needed to stand up for oneself. Sarah and I are still at it for the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. Healing is pain, as Sarah keeps reminding me, but we're still getting out to movies. On July 29th we actually split up because two interesting films were screening at the same time. Sarah decided to go full intellectual and catch the documentary. I went for the zombies-in-a-mall option. Both were worth talking about. First up is Colony, the latest from Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan). A bioterrorist unleashes a fungal-style zombie virus inside a big Seoul office-mall complex that gets locked down. The infected have a hive mind and keep evolving, which gives the usual siege setup some fresh wrinkles. Gianna Jun plays a sharp professor who's basically the Ripley of the piece — competent, figuring things out on the fly, holding it together. It's action-packed, loaded with practical effects, and looks more expensive than it likely was. At just over two hours it does throw in a few extra speed bumps that maybe weren't needed, but if you like high-octane zombie movies in the 28 Days Later vein, this is an easy recommendation. Sarah, meanwhile, saw Black Zombie, a Canadian-Haitian co-production documentary about the actual origins of the zombie. It starts with Haitian voodoo culture and the plantation history, then tracks how the concept mutated through early cinema (White Zombie), Romero, and into the modern biochemical versions we know today. It also digs into how Western pop culture has pretty thoroughly misrepresented and vilified voodoo along the way. Slash from Guns N' Roses even shows up as one of the talking heads. Educational, well-made, and especially interesting if you've ever wondered why “zombie” can mean so many different things depending on the movie. Bilingual and an easy watch for anyone who likes docs about horror genres. Two very different films about zombies, both solid. We'll keep going as long as the festival (and Sarah's leg) allows. Sarah and I are still grinding deep within the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. We're not getting to as many screenings as we'd like (broken leg will do that), but we're still hitting a solid mix of the classic Fantasia checkboxes. Fresh episode of 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia is up, and this one covers two strong ones. First is The Mouths, the North American premiere from Takashi Shimizu. Classic Japanese horror setup: a cursed tree outside a cemetery, a group of teens daring each other to touch it for a courage test, and then the usual (and very well-executed) fallout. Hollow eyes, streaky hair, excellent practical makeup and effects. The film is framed as a series of first-person accounts given to an investigating officer, which lets it play with both the supernatural side and the interpersonal drama between the characters. It leans into that familiar “you kind of brought this on yourself” Japanese horror energy. If you like the original Ju-On or Ringu, this is an easy recommendation. Short, breezy, and does the genre proud. Then we get to the one that might be my favorite film of the festival so far (and one of my favorites of the year): I Love Paris. World premiere. It's an underground music-scene mockumentary that happens to have vampires in it. Think What We Do in the Shadows energy, but less cartoonish and more grounded in the actual Parisian music world. Paris (played by Aminata Thiboult, who is fantastic) is an up-and-coming French artist who becomes a vampire mostly by accident and then has to figure out how to still chase a festival slot when she can only work at night. The vampire lore is kept deliberately light — no super strength, no fancy courts, just the inconvenience of living forever and needing blood. The music-scene side is so strong it could almost stand alone as a comedy about trying to make it. Bilingual, full of very French humor, and the main performance is a delight. Two very different vibes, both worth your time if you’re hunting down movies off the beaten path. We'll keep watching. You keep listening. Go see some Fantasia films. Fantasia International Film Festival 2026, the 30th edition. This is the annual film festival founded in 1996 and held primarily in Montreal, Canada. It specialises in genre films, including fantasy, horror, science fiction, and cult cinema, and draws over 100,000 attendees each year including Marc Canale and myself, old hand at this now, two years on the trot at A Year in Horror HQ. Once again we've been invited to take part in covering the big one and we can not wait to get stuck in. Sarah and I are well into the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal. The fest runs until August 2nd, and we're doing our best to catch as many films as possible while keeping these chats spoiler-light and pretty honest. This time around we covered three very different movies. Sarah still refers to them as “the baby one,” “the black and white one,” and “the indigenous one,” which somehow works. First up is Nightborn (Finnish title Yön lapsi), directed by Hanna Bergholm and starring Rupert Grint. A young couple moves into her grandmother's old cottage in the Finnish countryside, hoping to start a family. Things get tense fast. It's a folklore-flavored take on the “is the baby evil or is the mother losing it” setup, full of constant baby crying that acts like its own soundtrack. Super effective, really stressful, and a solid cozy-horror watch if you're into that vibe. Easy recommend, especially once it hits Shudder. Next is Godhead from Mark H. Rapaport (who brought HIPPO to Fantasia before). This one's a striking black-and-white film about two eccentric twins who show up claiming to be prophets and put a priest in a brutal moral bind. The cinematography is gorgeous — every frame looks intentional. Sarah watched this one solo and had mixed feelings. She liked the setup and the look, but the dialogue and performances felt a bit theatrical and didn't fully land for her. It's interesting, just not a slam dunk. Finally we get to Ancestral Beasts, the world premiere from Tim Riedel. An Indigenous woman leaves the city for her auntie's rural cabin, looking for some peace. What starts as a quiet character piece slowly builds into something much more unsettling. Think generational trauma and grief given a horror twist, with strong practical effects and a slow-burn “is this real or is this her mind?” tension that pays off really well. Solid Canadian horror with a clear point of view. Worth seeking out. More movies coming soon. Go see some Fantasia. In the 80's and 90's in the movie business it wasn't music or people that made the world go around, it was rubber....In advance of the film's world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal we got the opportunity to dive into the life and times of the masters of the practical VFX game.  It's time for 'Rubberhead: The Life & Monsters of Steve Johnson'.Steve Johnson was a child of the movies whose journey led to creature shop of Rick Baker all the way to big budget classics like 'Ghostbusters' and the indie gore darlings like "Night of the Demons'.  As the 90's came around he built his own  groundbreaking FX studio that would work with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro.However when the studios started to favour digital effects over practical ones, his success started to wain which led to being a man out of time, as divorce and the non-stop party like it's the 1980's started to see an actual end..While 'Rubberhead' doesn't skimp on the fan service which is well deserved and plentiful it's also a really interesting story of a mad creative genius being undone by his demons like many before him have gone through.  That being said, with Johnson serving as narrator he gives this time period the unabashed rock star treatment that it so richly deserved.  He created on a level like no other, and played in is excesses without regret.  Iconic geniuses never seem to fit anywhere, and that's exactly what Steve Johnson.A film seven years in the making, we had the pleasure of sitting down with director Nick Taylor about following this immensely interesting life,  paying homage to the time period and acknowledging unhinged brilliance when it stares us in the face.

Sarah and I are still deep in the 30th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival here in Montreal. It’s time for the second episode of 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia. As usual, we're keeping it loose, chatting about the movies we've seen, and trying not to spoil anything big. Our dog Clementine made us do a few extra takes again, but we got there. In this episode we talk about two very different Canadian premieres. First up is After School (also known as Straf), a Dutch dark comedy directed by Merijn Scholte Albers and Tobias Smeets. It follows Edwin (Rutger de Bekker), a music teacher who's a total pushover and gets himself into deeper and deeper trouble after a bad decision with a nightmare student. It's super tense, cringe-inducing in the best way, and genuinely one of the funniest straight comedies we've seen in a while. There’s a second screening on July 25th so you still have a chance to see it at Fantasia. Then we get into Dance Freak, from Alan Resnick and Robby Rackleff. This one's a lot weirder — high-contrast black-and-white surreal absurdity with a ton of practical effects. Underground internet comedy vibes from the 2010s turned into a feature length film. If you're into the wild late-night Adult Swim shorts (think Unedited Footage of a Bear, Too Many Cooks, etc), Mike Diva stuff, or Sarah Sherman's SNL sketches, this might be your jam. I was cracking up; Sarah was mostly just staring at me wondering what the hell I was laughing at. It's definitely not for everybody, but I had a great time with its pure absurdity. Jo Gaffney is saving movies. The 24-year-old Vancouver director is to premiere their new short THE LAST DIY SHOW at Fantasia International Film Festival in...35 minutes, as I type this. Shot on 16mm, the punk rock zombie comedy exemplifies the scrappy, go-for-broke, collaborative attitude that acts as a salve to an era increasingly plagued with AI slop.It's not anti-AI, per say. Gaffney's not wagging their finger at a tech bro crowd. Their argument's made in the smorgasbord of art laying around THE LAST DIY SHOW's set, repurposed from that of a local punk venue. I'm talking homemade posters, flyers, fake merch. A cross-section showcasing the inside of someone's body sees organs bedazzled in sparkles via stop-motion animation in order to reveal what happens to the human body when it goes full zombie. Each frame of 16mm film is revealed with tatters intact, hinting at the frame preceding it, just out of sight.The medium is the message: analog is not only king, but also vital to human expression. There's joy to discover through paint-stained fingers and cardboard props, foley sessions made of squashed fruit, nights spent alongside friends and partners, packed like sardines at a parent's house. The textures, the imperfections stick to the brain like graffiti to a wall, lipstick to a mirror. And these tokens of well-spent time survive, long beyond what a human body can hold.Movies are tokens of experience, communicating the desires and troubles we struggle to put to words. To leave these feelings to mere prompts is ephemeral and misses the point. Instead, try shooting 3,000 feet of film over four days to tell a story about a punk-rock breakup while surviving the first hour of the zombie apocalypse. We have turned our usual post-movie rambling once again into a podcast this year, so welcome to 9to5.cc Goes to Fantasia 2026. Each episode we'll chat about the films we catch, share what we thought and give you honest reviews and opinions of the films we saw. We kick things off with You Are the Film, the North American premiere from Makoto Ueda (the screenwriter of Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes). It's a short, super breezy time-bendy movie that plays with reality in clever ways. We both loved the small-cast energy, the quirky humor, and how it keeps surprising you even after you think you've figured out the rules. Sarah's takeaway about the weird cafe order may be the best part of her review. Sarah checked out Tight Lettuce, a world premiere she caught solo. It's a raw, funny, and sometimes heavy look at a grown son and his dad's complicated relationship, with addiction in the mix. Really strong performances, especially the dad played by Emmanuel Bilodeau. An amazing standout of Quebecois cinema. We recorded the whole thing in our usual back-and-forth style (complete with Clementine barking and forcing a second take). It's loose, honest, and exactly how we talk about movies in real life. Joseph Perry and I have remote press credentials for the festival and decided to let you know the five films we are each looking forward to the most. Of course, we couldn't stop at just five. Fantasia International Film Festival 2026, the 30th edition. This is the annual film festival founded in 1996 and held in Montreal, Canada. It specialises in genre films, including fantasy, horror, science fiction, and cult cinema, and draws over 100,000 attendees each year including Marc Canale and myself, old hand at this now, two years on the trot for A Year in Horror. Once again we've been invited to take part in covering the big one and we can not wait to get stuck in. Today we both offer up our top 5 picks that we can not wait to see during the festival run. Plus a stack of potential greats in our also ran choices.

Licenses 47:37: Another Taiyo Matsumoto manga has been licensed — but not by VIZ, by Manga Mavericks Books instead!; Aloha Comics announced they’ve licensed Ikuno Tajima’s After Märchen (Ever After in English) as their first ever manga license; K MANGA added a few new titles to its service; and so did Manga UP!; Kogattuo & Ichika Kino's World Wide Web MIKO! has been added to MANGA Plus. 51:21: Not new licenses, but might as well be considering some of these titles have been out of print for a long while! Look out for a couple Jiro Taniguchi titles, Hideo Azuma’s Disappearance Diary, and Kiriko Nananan’s Blue at some point this year; And with Otakon happening next month, Discotek announced a couple titles ahead of it, including the next entry of Digimon for them (Tamers) and the Hana Yori Dango anime. Streaming News 53:00: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights for Adolescence of Utena and will screen the movie in Japanese with English subtitles in US theaters June 21-22, which has Helen in a pickle; JUJUTSU KAISEN Hidden Inventory / Premature Death compilation film and English dubs for Given: Hiiragi mix and Given The Movie: To the Sea, and the Bean Counter OVA are now on Crunchyroll. 55:49: HIDIVE has announced their comings and goings from the service this month, from the Heavy Metal L-Gaim TV anime and OVAs to The Life of Budori Gusuko being added, while Get Backers, Humanity Has Declined, Mayo Chiki!, and Wasteful Days of High School Girl anime are leaving HIDIVE on June 30; premieres of the Cherry and Virgin film and the Sekiro: No Defeat anime will happen at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. 58:34: And yes, Conan Cinema Saturdays has returned this summer…which means Justin will just be vibing and getting these movies views instead of watching most of them properly this year! Weird News 1:00:25: Osaka's holding an exhibition of 17th Century Dutch masterpieces, and it's set to take place at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka between August 21 to September 27. Somehow, Frieren and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is a part of it as a crossover, and Helen had a great story to tell involving earrings and which one it needs to go on for this rabbit, but found out that those without a Bluesky account can’t see it. Guess who found this out mid-podcast? 1:03:43: We will now have Baki’s dad in Tekken 8, meaning these anime/manga characters appearing in fighting games has gone up somehow. 1:05:19: Usually we put a manga getting a US live action in this section because again, these normally don’t work out very well — somehow it’s that and weird because it’s one of most unlikeliest manga to get a US live-action series…it’s based off a Josei manga series! The much hyped Undertone is here so what did it get so right and so wrong?I'm here to take you through the entire plot, trailer, posters and all the missed opportunities.Undertone is a 2025 Canadian supernatural horror film written and directed by Ian Tuason, in his directorial debut.The film stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a woman who hosts a paranormal podcast with her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco), where she is the skeptic to his believer.After Evy moves back home to become the caregiver to her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), she and Justin are sent recordings of a married couple (Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung) experiencing paranormal noises in their home, drawing Evy into fear and paranoia.Evy and her mother are the only characters to be shown on-screen in the film. All other characters are heard as off-screen voices, thus conveying the film's horror through its sound design.Undertone premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27, 2025, and was theatrically released in the United States by A24 on March 13, 2026, and by VVS Films in Canada.The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing $20 million against a budget of $500,000.The film was inspired in part by Tuason caring for his parents in the early 2020s as they faced terminal cancer.It began as a radio play before evolving into a film screenplay that incorporated some of Tuason's own experiences, and was shot in his own childhood home.The film was shot in February 2025 with production taking place in Rexdale, a neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada. "Shelby Oaks" is a supernatural horror mystery film produced, written, and directed by former YouTuber turned filmmaker Chris Stuckmann in his feature directorial debut, with Mike Flanagan as an executive producer. It stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Keith David, Sarah Durn, Robin Bartlett, and Michael Beach. Expanding upon an online found-footage series centered on a paranormal investigation team called the Paranormal Paranoids, which also featured Durn, the film follows a woman (Sullivan) desperate to find her sister (Durn) after she vanishes while exploring the eerie, abandoned town of Shelby Oaks. The film premiered at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival in 2024, where it earned mostly positive reviews, with critics praising Stuckmann's direction, the film's haunting atmosphere, and Sullivan's standout performance.
