Francis Galluppi is the writer/director of The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024). After years of touring in various punk bands and an accident that led to a broken wrist, Francis decided it was time for a career shift. During a six month healing process, he picked up his camera and began shooting videos around the house with his wife. Almost immediately, he fell in love with the creative process and started to gather his friends to make his first short film, High Desert Hell (2019). Utilizing locations from local sources and keeping budget costs to a minimum, he completed his film for around $1,000. After this first successful outing that was on a learn-as-you-go basis and with a new script penned, Francis packed his gear and headed to Oregon to shoot his second short, The Gemini Project (2020). While neither of the shorts gathered major industry attention, they certainly sparked some interest. After a lengthy process of optioning and failing to gather necessary funds, a house was sold in favor of the budget for The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024). Before long, a stacked cast of genre-film crowd favorites were attached to the project including Jim Cummings (Thunder Road, The Wolf of Snow Hollow), Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, From Beyond), Alex Essoe (Starry Eyes, Doctor Sleep), Sam Huntington (Detroit Rock City, Not Another Teen Movie), Jocelin Donahue (The House of the Devil, Insidious: Chapter 2) and Richard Brake (Mandy, Batman Begins). The film premiered to a packed audience at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas and received rave reviews from moviegoers. Sam Raimi was so impressed with the film that he hand selected Francis to direct the latter of two upcoming Evil Dead installments. Aside from all the film work, he has also shot a handful of music videos for indie rock band, Mt. Joy including "Strangers", "Bathroom Light" and "Evergreen". He's also an avid collector of physical media and screen-used movie props including a piece of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) house. Stay tuned for many exciting updates on his Evil Dead installment and pick up The Last Stop in Yuma County (2024), available on blu ray and streaming everywhere now! Watch This Episode On YouTubeThis is as close as I've ever been to going Joe Rogan style, four hour interview.I've never talked with someone so willing to discuss the history of cinema (in this case, Taiwanese) than my guest today, Birdy Wei-Ting Hung. She directed the brilliant film, A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY FOR THE LADY AVENGERS (2024), which screened at Slamdance. In order to make the film, she drew on years of reading history and watching cinema. If you loved school, or even if you didn't, prepare for the best class ever with Birdy. In this episode, we discuss:how she became a subject matter expert on Taiwanese cinema and learned to love horror films;how Edward Young and other filmmakers influenced her film;if a critic can take their own biases out of their judgment on a particular film and whether students of film can see that in others' works;Sean Baker's influence on her type of filmmaking and the bravery to take on subjects like sexual awakening, which is a theme of her film;who she thinks are female directors taking similar steps and her thoughts on labels;what her first screening at Fantastic Fest and in Taiwan was like;why Slamdance? it's her first time at the festival;does she consider herself a California filmmmaker?her work on music videos and what her first feature looks like -- "I'm not one of those people that has to be working on a feature"Birdy's Indie Film Highlights: MAULED BY A DOG (2024) dir. by Sion Owens; THE STAG (2023) dir. by An ChuLinks:Follow Birdy Wei-Ting Hung On InstagramVideo Essay For A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY FOR THE LADY AVENGERS (2024)Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/first-time-go/exclusive-content
Editors - Brett W. Bachman, ACE and Josh Ethier, ACE Long time friends, but first time co-editors, Brett and Josh are no strangers to working in the horror/thriller genre. The same can't be said for COMPANION director Drew Hancock. Not only was this film Hancock's first feature as a director, but it was also his first real foray into genre filmmaking. But that didn't stop either Brett or Josh from seeing how good this film was going to be right from the script. What they couldn't predict, was how great a working experience the whole thing would be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, COMPANION stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin that unravels into violence amid revelations that one of the guests is what's known as a companion robot. BRETT W. BACHMAN, ACE Brett W. Bachman, ACE, is an editor of film & television with acclaimed titles such as Mandy, Pig, & The Fall of the House of Usher. He has worked with leading voices in genre film, such as Panos Cosmatos, Mike Flanagan, Josh Ruben, and Elijah Wood. He's also brought his talents to the small screen with numerous television and commercial projects. Recent & upcoming titles include: Companion, a thriller from writer/director Drew Hancock and New Line Cinema, Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel, and Heart Eyes, a romcom-slasher hybrid from director Josh Ruben. Additional titles include Werewolves Within, Color Out of Space, The Toxic Avenger, The Vigil, Cooties, and many more. Bachman found his love of editing in his formative years, developing a passion for storytelling through three self-produced documentaries when he was just 19. At 22 years old, he was one of the youngest members of his AFI Conservatory editing program. Since then, he's nurtured his love of filmmaking with an array of eclectic projects as an Editor, Associate Producer, and Executive Producer JOSH ETHIER, ACE Josh Ethier is a renowned Los Angeles based film editor who has left a lasting mark on the horror, thriller and action genres; he literally wears his passion for the genres on his sleeve. Ethier is most well known for his frequent collaborations with director Joe Begos, with whom he has crafted a unique, LOUD and impactful cinematic style. Their partnership has resulted in several acclaimed films, including "Bliss," a psychedelic horror film that explores the descent of an artist into madness; "VFW," a gritty, action-packed thriller about war veterans defending their local VFW post from a drug-addled gang; and most recently, "Christmas Bloody Christmas," a festive yet terrifying holiday horror film that's streaming on Shudder. These collaborations have resonated with audiences and critics alike, showcasing Ethier's ability to enhance Begos' visionary storytelling through his editing. Robbie Williams is a hugely popular singer and songwriter. He set a record by winning 18 Brit Awards and has two Grammy nominations to his name. Williams has churned out six of the top 100 best-selling albums in British history, amassed an audience of 375,000 fans over three nights performing at Knebworth, setting a record that's yet to be surpassed, and has sold 85 million album worldwide. The list of achievements and accolades goes on and on, but he insists, “I didn't derive any joy from all the success that I had.” However, at 50, things have changed. “I am experiencing joy and I'm experiencing happiness. I'm also experiencing gratitude, a great deal of gratitude where I didn't have gratitude before. So, these are my golden years.”Williams has been enjoying a different kind of spotlight since August 2024. That's when his film, Better Man, premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival before moving on to the Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, and more. Based on Williams' true rise, fall and resurgence, Better Man chronicles his journey from finding fame as a teenager with the boy band Take That, to parting ways with the group and mounting a solo career. While Williams did find great success on that path, it was one that also came with a significant number of struggles that, as Williams himself lists, included, “childhood trauma, fame too early, mental illness, addiction, [and] rehab.” Better Man shows how he powered through those challenges as Williams sees himself, as a “performing monkey.”With Better Man gearing up to celebrate its nationwide release on January 10th, Williams took the time to join me for a Collider Forces conversation to revisit the early days of his music career, explain how his definition of having “it” has evolved over the years, discuss why he trusted Gracey with his story, and so much more. WITTE WIEVEN, directed by Didier Konings, brings my Fantastic Fest 2024 coverage to a belated end. Frieda (Anneke Sluiters) is a pious woman struggling to conceive a child. In her medieval Dutch village, help only comes through God and the Church, via archaic fertility rituals. One day, the local butcher Gelo (Leon van Wass) assaults Frieda, threatening to rape her in the forbidden woods just outside the village. Legend says no one leaves those woods alive, but this day, something stops Gelo and saves Frieda. She makes it out of the woods. Once the villagers see this, the murmurs start. Frieda's cursed. She conspires with the Devil to conceive. She's a witch. Normally, these accusations wouldn't bear any weight, but given the voices and presences Frieda feels next to her in the coming days, including the feeling something beckons her to re-enter those mythical woods, she can't shake the feeling there's a grander design at work. Konings' movie brings to mind the best Robert Eggers movies: THE NORTHMAN and THE WITCH. This is folk horror with roots firmly planted in an anti-patriarchal worldview, one decrying religious corruption - its unwillingness to prune the festering, fallacious branches of humans committing abuses in the name of otherwise nurturing principles. In this film, as evidenced through grand wide shots firmly establishing this world's perspective: nature is king. Humans pale against the might of a forest hundreds of years old. Sluiters plays a woman whose stillness is a survival tactic. She keeps her mouth shut against her husband's cowardice, the town's baseless accusations. The performance is not one of a meek woman discovering her anger, but rather an angry woman finally failing to hold back righteous fury. Sluiters' screams make for some of the movie's most rewarding and intense scenes. And all of this comes in at just 60 minutes? What a bargain!
