Student debt, financial literacy, and mental health are all intertwined. However, striking the correct balance between these three components is not as simple as it sounds. In today's episode of the Pursuit of Learning, we are having a mind-blowing conversation with someone who has mastered the art of balancing above three elements mentioned above through the complex and long journey she had. Melanie Lockert, a freelance personal finance writer, podcaster, event organizer at Lola Retreat, and a mental health advocate, joins us today to talk about how she reached her debt-free life after years of hard work. We started the conversation with her story behind her first blog post to her first book, Dear Debt: A Story About Breaking Up with Debt. Interestingly her first blog happened to be a result of her depression about debts, and she documented her path out of $81,000 in student loan debt on her blog. Since then, she has been aspiring to write relatable, sympathetic, and helpful material, hoping to make a difference with her words. As of now, she has her work featured on Allure, Vice, Credit Karma, and Business Insider.Aside from that, she is the host of the podcast The Mental Health and Wealth Show and the organizer of the Lola Retreat, a women's money-focused gathering. We talk about her experience in arts education and nonprofits, where she worked before entering the finance industry. On the other hand, five years ago, by the age of 31 years, she could pay off all her debt. However, until that, she had not invested at all. She broadly explains the sacrifice she had to become a debt-free person today. Wrapping up the discussion, she emphasizes the necessity of changing our minds to become the person we want to be. The more women I talk to, the more I realize that almost all of us have “issues” with money. We either aren't earning enough, are living beyond our means, are caught in the trap of student loan and/ or credit card debt, or are terrified to ask for what we actually need to float our boat. And this doesn't even begin to cover the fact that most of us grew up hearing all manner of money nonsense from our parents that virtually guarantees we won't be improving our relationship with money any time soon. Oh, yeah, it's complicated all right. So, I invited speaker and writer, Melanie Lockert, author of the best-selling book ‘Dear Debt”, host of the Mental Health & Wealth Podcast, and a woman who has learned a thing or two about money, the hard way. She is also co-founder of the Lola Retreat which helps bold women face their fears, own their dreams, and be in control of their finances. Melanie is passionate about empowering women, helping others get out of debt, and mental wellness. Money and mental health, have you ever wondered if there is a connection? Because there absolutely is. And surprisingly, even though this is something I’ve known for a while, and even experienced in my personal life, I’ve never had anyone on the podcast to talk about it with me. Luckily, I know people. Like Melanie Lockert, who was on episode 21 of the podcast all the way back in 2015. A lot has happened since we recorded that episode. She published a book called Dear Debt, moved from Portland to L.A., and founded a women’s financial literacy event called Lola Retreat. She’s also become very well known as not only a debt expert, but also a money and mental health advocate. And that’s what we’re talking about on the show, hopefully to shed some light on a topic not many people are talking about. If you or someone you know is struggling with financial issues, mental health issues, or both, here are some resources we mentioned on the show that you may want to look into for help: Crisis Text Line Open Path Collective The LifeLine Canada For full episode show notes visit https://jessicamoorhouse.com/212

When Melanie Lockert and her partner launched the Lola Retreat in 2017, profits were at the bottom of their list. So low they did not even try to go for sponsors until just a few weeks before the event. What happened then was shocking. Plus a money tip for the luxury lover.
