My guest today is the Ukrainian chef, food writer and activist Olia Hercules. Olia was born in the South of Ukraine and has lived in the UK since her late teens. After working in journalism she decided to follow her heart, her stomach and arguably her heritage, and become a chef.  She trained at Leith's School of Food and Wine, worked in kitchens, including as chef de partie for Yotam Ottolenghi and as a recipe developer.  But her mission is to make people rethink their attitude to eastern european - and particularly Ukrainian - food. She has written three cookbooks, including Mamushka, which won the fortnum's award for best debut.  When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, life changed forever for Olia and her family who lived in the Kherson region. As olia says, ‘They lost their homes and their livelihoods, but they are all still alive.”  Her brother signed up ti fight and Olia turned activist, launching Cook for Ukraine and raising over £1million for supplies for Ukrainians.  I was fortunate enough to visit Olia for lunch at home in East London to talk about her new book, Strong Roots, a moving portrait of the history of Ukraine through generations of her family, being descended from a long line of powerful women, making the decision to retrain as a chef and how it felt to discover she is a carrier of fragile X syndrome which meant that she was unexpectedly plunged into premature menopause (and everything that entails) at just 38. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Strong Roots by Olia Hercules as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. If you're the founder of a scaling brand, you've likely thought about selling your business. But when should you start preparing, and how do you find the right buyer? In this episode, we discuss mergers and acquisitions with Charles Lanceley, Managing Director of Alantra's consumer team. Alantra is a leading investment bank specialising in consumer brands. Charles has worked on major deals, including Fuel 10K, Strong Roots, and Grenade, and shares what makes a brand valuable—from strong financials to a compelling investment story. He explains why building a business solely to sell is a mistake and how focusing too much on an exit can hurt your chances of achieving a great one. You'll learn why being ‘for sale' is never ideal, how the best deals happen behind the scenes, and why top M&A advisors don't just find buyers—they already know who's in the market. We also cover common founder mistakes, like underestimating due diligence and not preparing for the workload of an exit. Charles highlights how an advisor can ease this process, letting founders stay focused on running their business—because if performance dips, so does the deal's value. Finally, we discuss how private equity and trade buyers view businesses differently, the impact of market cycles, and why the best way to maximise your exit is to build a brand buyers can't ignore. Whether you're considering selling soon or just want to create a lasting brand, this episode is packed with essential insights. Let's have some real talk today. Life can be a whirlwind sometimes, am I right? If we don't have strong roots and tough skin we will easily be pushed around like those blow up stick people at the car lots trying to attract customers. Completely unstable! I've been reminded recently of how important it is for us to develop a tough skin and strong roots. There will be battles we face, there will conflict within our souls, and conflicts that arise from those around us. We will experience ups and downs, it's inevitable. But we can either be swept under by the waves of life or learn to surf these waves that will in fact come. Being a christian women these days isn't just this pretty title, or a cute little lady, being a christian woman requires grit, fierceness, strength, resilience, it requires getting your hands dirty, standing firm, not buckling down, staying true to your convictions, loving those who hate you, being selfless and sacrificial, dying to self and living for Christ and like I said before, strong roots and tough skin! It's not easy, especially in our world and culture today. And let me tell you this unpopular opinion, people will not like you! Some may not like you because your simply a christian, some may not like you just for fun, some may not like you because of your appearance, your family dynamic, your morals, your parenting style and so on. You really never know. Nobody wants to be disliked, it sucks. But what I have realized more and more as I've been getting older and experiencing more life is this, you have to get use to people sometimes not liking you and sometimes there is no good reason for it. If you don't have strong roots and tough skin, this will eat you alive. It will cause you to doubt yourself, feel insecure and be swayed by the opinion and thoughts of others. But who here actually has time for that? All of you have a billion things you're juggling, motherhood, home life, work, errands and so on. And as a grown mature woman, you don't have time to be distracted by the whirlwinds of life and the random haters that may arise. Granted, we should always always have self reflection and look inwardly to ensure that our haters weren't created due to our actions but in some instances that isn't the case and you must learn to know the difference. Tom Crawford-Clarke, a London-based dentist, reflects on his journey with fake meat products, expressing his evolving relationship with them. In the past, he savored various options like Quorn, Linda McCartney, Beyond Burgers, and Moving Mountains, praising their relative tastiness. Yet, he's grown skeptical due to uncertainties about their composition. While these meat substitutes aim to emulate the texture and flavor of traditional meat, doubts about their ingredients linger. Fake meat has long been presented as a healthier choice, with offerings like plant-based burgers and sausages promising to satisfy both our taste buds and our desire for more ethical eating. Tom's concerns about the authenticity of these products are shared by others. The red liquid that oozes from Beyond Burgers, meant to mimic blood, is in fact beetroot juice. However, despite endorsements from figures like Leonardo DiCaprio and partnerships with fast-food giants like McDonald's and KFC, Beyond Meat has faced a 30% decline in sales. 30%。 Recent survey results from Strong Roots, a vegan company, reveal an intriguing shift in consumer behavior. While 61% of participants reported increasing their plant-based consumption, 40% have started to cut down on fake meat. Taste emerged as the primary factor driving this shift, followed closely by concerns about artificial additives and the highly processed nature of these products. Economic pressures on households have also contributed to the decreased demand for meat alternatives. This decline arrives at a challenging juncture for the meat substitute industry, following the closure of companies like Meatless Farm and the shelving of vegan ranges by Heck. The trajectory of the fake meat market showcases both its rise and some growing pains. With the term "plant-based" gaining prominence in the 2010s, supermarket shelves began featuring an array of meat substitutes alongside established brands like Linda McCartney. The market boomed, and in 2019, a significant portion of new UK food products were labeled vegan. However, setbacks like Beyond Meat's sales slump have exposed challenges around taste, health perceptions, and pricing. This cooling trend is apparent in supermarket adjustments to meat-free selections and a 7% volume sales decrease over a year, as reported by research company Kantar. In conclusion, the journey of fake meat in the market exemplifies its evolution from hype to a more nuanced reality. While Beyond Meat and similar brands face sales declines, others like THIS continue to flourish due to affordability and the prevailing concern for environmental and ethical impacts. Consumers are reevaluating their preferences, seeking healthier and cleaner options while considering nutritional content. The shift represents a kink in the graph rather than a market failure, paralleling the evolution seen in other industries. As individuals like Tom Crawford-Clarke emphasize, the motivation for adopting plant-based diets extends beyond mere imitation, reflecting a broader lifestyle shift toward sustainability and ethical considerations. Reference article: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66438807

There is something about Mary Marantz's story and writing that I just connect so deeply with. Her memoir DIRT was one of my favorite reads of 2021 (listen to our conversation about it here) and she is back on the show to talk about her newest book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots, which came out last fall. In this episode, Mary and I talk about striving to be the most put together person in the room in the pursuit of perfection and acceptance, feeling like we need to prove that we deserve whatever success or opportunity we have, and how our little girl selves would be so happy with who we have become. (And how even still we wonder what it would be like if our lives were different.) “That's not a real job”. As entrepreneurs it's a thought that simmers underneath the surface that many of us have to battle against. When “replace corporate salary” becomes the goal less out of financial need and more to prove to ourselves (or a family member) that it's “ok” to pursue our dreams. It's far too easy to find our identity in our resume and believe we have to do something important, social proof our way to Forbes magazine, and have a list of metrics a mile long before others will take us seriously—let alone take our own selves seriously.Owning our story, believing our worth, pursuing dreams and overcoming limiting beliefs. Well. That's a storyline today's guest, Mary Marantz, knows all too well. From a trailer in rural West Virginia to graduating from Yale Law School, her story is captivating and will help us all find more comfort in our own skin. WILDFLOWER SHOWNOTES : shannaskidmore.com/mary-marantz

Author and podcast host Mary Marantz recognizes the beauty in her story and the gifts it has provided. But like many of us, it took time for her to see that beauty especially because she saw it as so different than what the “norm” is. Her journey starts modestly from her family's trailer in West Virginia where she learned life lessons from her father, dealt with an absent working mother, and found blessings in her relationships with her grandmother as well as the occasional stray cat. She found a place excelling in the classroom and her brightness led her all the way to Yale Law School. As Mary traveled and explored the world outside of West Virginia, her experiences nourished her strong roots and helped her blossom into the resource she is today for so many others. She shares her wisdom on her podcast (The Mary Marantz Show which debuted in the iTunes top 200) and in her 2 books Dirt and the newly released Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots: Finding Grace, Freedom, and Purpose in an Overachieving World. Her writing has also been featured in many other publications, including Business Insider, Thrive Global, MSN, Bustle, and Brit+Co. You know her. Maybe you are her. The woman who feels like she must always be "on." The one who is always performing. She walks into every room relentlessly hard on herself, always attempting to deliver an A+ performance, because she believes this is the bare minimum standard she has to achieve just to be invited to most tables. You would never know by looking at her the hard things she's had to overcome. She succeeds, almost compulsively, in this urgent attempt to outrun her own muddy story. But she is walking around now, reduced to this burned-out, brittle, fragile, ashes-to-ashes version of herself. She is, at last . . .exhausted. When gold stars, highlight reels, and seeking approval from strangers on the internet are not enough, Mary Marantz is on the show giving us permission to stop running. Join us as she shares how to move from achieving, striving, and performing for your worth to the grace, freedom, and purpose that come from knowing your identity and calling are determined by God. You know her. Maybe you are her. The woman who is always performing. Is this you? That's right, Mary's dear friend, author, and fellow ‘slow growth avenger', Jennifer Dukes Lee takes the role of host today to talk to Mary about her highly anticipated new book that hits shelves TODAY - “Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots: Finding Grace, Freedom, and Purpose in an Over Achieving World.”   When gold stars, highlight reels, and seeking the approval of strangers on the internet are not enough, podcast host and bestselling author Mary Marantz gives the woman who feels like she must always be “on” permission to finally stop striving. “Slow Growth” is a love letter to every woman who has tried to run so hard from failure that she stumbled into success. But now, as Mary writes, “she is doubled over at the pain of a lifetime spent proving, this one truth dawning on her with each new day: no matter how hard you run, you can't outrun you.” In her signature lyrical and powerful prose paired with her own stunning photography, Mary combines heartfelt memoir with thoughtful reflection to help women reshape their understanding of worthiness.    On today's episode, Mary and Jennifer dive into the heartbeat mantra behind “Slow Growth” – you cannot achieve your way into worth - as they tackle:   Why giving up achieving for you worth actually frees you up to go after even bigger goals Why “I'll be happy when ______” is a death sentence to living a life with purpose The importance of implementing a habit of celebration on the way to the goals we set Why we have to part ways with the stories that previously helped us to survive How the Girl in the Red Cape can make peace with the Wolf If you are ready to stop running, realize that you are not in a race with anyone, and truly believe that good things take time - real things take time, and that Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots, then make sure to tune in to today's episode!   Grab a copy of Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots here! https://www.christianbook.com/equals-strong-finding-freedom-purpose-overachieving/mary-marantz/9780800738464/pd/738461?event=ESRCG Take my Achiever-Type quiz here! https://marymarantz.com/quiz

Together, Sharon and Mary touch on important topics like perseverance, education, and extending gentleness to each other and our own selves. Our egos want to keep us safe, but when we continuously operate from a place of safety, taking risks can feel too scary. Ultimately, slow growth equals strong roots means that, when a tipping point day comes in our lives, we have worked hard to grow our character and foundation to meet new challenges with strength and success. Growth and hard work doesn't happen like a movie montage with a good soundtrack, it takes a lifetime. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest this week is my dear friend and incredible human being, Mary Marantz. Mary grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia. The first of her immediate family to go to college, she went on to earn a master's degree in moral philosophy and a law degree from Yale. After turning down six-figure-salary law firm offers in London and New York and starting a photography business with her husband, Justin—where they were later named one of the prestigious Profoto Legends of Light—they have since gone on to build a successful online education platform for thousands of creative entrepreneurs worldwide. She is the bestselling author of Dirt (Revell, 2020), which was a finalist for the 2020 ECPA Memoir of the Year, and Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots (Revell, 2022). Mary is the host of the highly ranked podcast The Mary Marantz Show, which debuted in the iTunes Top 200, and her work has been featured on CNN, MSN, Business Insider, Bustle, Thrive Global, Southern Living, Hallmark Home & Family, and more. Mary and Justin live in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut, with their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed and Atticus. 6:09 – Mary 201 Mary is a return guest to the show, so she gets to give the Mary 201. She is busy creating the work she was created to do and trying to be obedient to the work God asked her to do. 9:12 – Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots Mary released her latest book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots. This mantra has been the story of her life, because she was often overlooked. 14:02 – Growing roots When you experience frustration and feel like you're making no progress, just know that you are growing strong roots. 20:33 – Pruning vines in your life I shared a personal story with Mary about my struggles and pruning vines in my life, and it gives her chills. 28:49 – The fruit of hard work Push through the struggles and hard times, and you will enjoy the fruit of your hard work. 33:33 – Trenches and mountaintops Mary wrote her latest book from the trenches, not the mountaintop. We're all chasing other people. We all want approval. 45:34 – Wanting more What if success is where all the trouble begins? If you have all you want, why do you want more? You're probably walking around something you've prayed for your whole life. 1:00 – Get to know you Guilty pleasure? Yellowstone and true crime episodes New career? Interior design FEATURED QUOTES If we choose to be a tree, we not only get to grow up to these dizzying heights over the long haul, but we actually get to last for generations. We don't get to walk among the giants if we're not willing to take our time. This book was written from the trenches, not the mountaintop. We're all chasing other people. We all want approval.
