LIFTS Episode 138 – ABC Fitness Mid Year Report: The Fitness Industry Has a Habit Problem

Escape Your Limits

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2026 50:12

Welcome to another episode of LIFTS, where we explore the future of fitness, wellness and human performance. In this episode, hosts Matthew Januszek and Mohammed Iqbal unpack the findings from the ABC Fitness Wellness Watch: Summer 2026 – The Reinforcement Shift report and explore what the latest consumer data tells us about the changing fitness industry. For years, the industry has focused on access, inspiration, new equipment, new workouts and attracting more members. But the latest data suggests the bigger opportunity isn't simply getting people to join; it's helping them keep going. With new gym joins down 9% year-on-year, but existing members showing greater consistency, Matthew and Mo discuss why accountability, reinforcement and habit formation could become increasingly important for operators. They explore why Gen Z now represents 46% of new gym joins, what fitness can learn from Duolingo's approach to creating long-term habits, and why the growing home fitness community could represent both an opportunity and a challenge for traditional gyms. The conversation also looks at Peloton's evolving business model, the role of personalisation, and how AI could give operators new ways to understand, communicate with and support members both inside and outside the gym. Ultimately, the question is shifting from who owns the member to who owns the habit? In this episode, we cover: Why the fitness industry has a habit problem Why 46% of new gym joins are Gen Z What fitness can learn from Duolingo about habit formation Why consumers are spending more on studio fitness The growing home fitness community Peloton, personalisation and connected fitness Why gyms need to think beyond what happens inside their four walls How AI could transform member engagement and retention Why the future could belong to the brands that own the habit

Come hang out in the Podcast Club, a free community that meets most Thursdays. You can join us at consciousedge.com/club.  Get full show notes at www.consciousedge.com/ep116 Instagram:@aleciastg In this episode, Alecia sits down with Jenn Baas, fractional CFO and facilitator of the Financial Leadership Lab at The Conscious Edge. Based on Jenn's experience working with entrepreneurs, a majority find themselves off-track from what they predicted back in January by mid-year.  But there's a fix. A mid-year audit gives you three things: visibility into what's actually working, two quarters to make corrections, and data to replace the guessing. Even if you're finding yourself in a windfall, you can still get blind-sided. This is the real conversation every entrepreneur needs to have mid-year so there are no surprises come December.

The value is real. The spend is real. And the gap between the companies getting one in exchange for the other and the companies getting neither has never been wider. Six months into 2026, the top one percent of firms spend $7,450 per employee per month on AI while the median firm spends $11 — a 680x gap. The question in every boardroom has sharpened from “does AI work?” to “show me the ROI.”In this special episode of Talking AI, host Matt Paige hands the mic to an AI. Hatchworks AI just released its State of AI 2026: Mid-Year Reality Check — a comprehensive look at what has fundamentally changed since January and where AI is headed in the second half of the year — and instead of publishing it only as a written report, the team used ElevenLabs to turn the full report into an audio experience. The voice is AI-generated. Most people only think about taxes twice a year: while filing, and while dreading filing next time. That gap is exactly where expensive surprises are born. Today's episode is a genuine mid-year tax tune-up, the kind of checkup that takes maybe twenty minutes and can quietly save you from an ugly bill, an unexpected penalty, or a refund that wasn't actually a win. No jargon-heavy lecture, just a clear walkthrough of what to check right now while there's still time to fix it.What You'll Walk Away WithWhy a big tax refund last year tells you almost nothing about whether you're on track this yearThe four numbers you actually need to know to build your own mini tax forecast in one sittingHow the IRS "safe harbor" rule works, and the two different percentage thresholds that keep you penalty-freeA common myth about side hustle income that trips up more people than you'd expectWhy switching to a Roth 401k without a plan can quietly blow a hole in your monthly cash flowThe real math behind donor-advised funds, and why writing a check to charity may be leaving money on the tableA simple gut-check for figuring out whether you need a professional or can handle a financial fix yourselfWhy This Matters NowIn your 40s, your financial life usually gets more complicated before it gets simpler: a raise here, a side hustle there, maybe two incomes in the household, maybe a bonus that shows up at an inconvenient time. Each of those changes quietly shifts what you owe, and waiting until April to notice means you've lost your best chance to do anything about it. A twenty-minute check now isn't about becoming a tax expert. It's about making sure next spring is boring instead of stressful, which, when it comes to taxes, is exactly the goal. From the BasementA home AC disaster turns into an unexpectedly useful lesson about getting a second opinion before writing a big check, whether it's for a repair, a service, or apparently, a $3,000 HVAC estimate that turned out to be a $300 fix. Consider it a bonus lesson in trusting your gut when something doesn't add up.Resources MentionedStacking Benjamins Tax Guide — free guide for organizing your mid-year tax reviewStacko Financial Action Month board — the interactive game with a money move for each dayField Kit Finance — track net worth, spending, and subscriptions in one placeDaffy — donor-advised fund platform referenced for charitable giving strategyIRS Estimated Tax Payments — where to make an estimated payment directlySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In the first episode of Can We Talk in Private?, the new podcast from Future Standard, hosts Alan Flannigan and Andrew Korz sit down with Future Standard Chief Investment Officer Mike Kelly to share their views on the major themes driving private markets. They explore how the changing macro regime is reshaping the role of asset allocators, driving the importance of portfolio construction higher. Defining trends from the start of the year remain in focus. Capital concentration and increased geopolitical uncertainty continue reshaping the opportunity set—driving value outside the large and mega-cap segments. And what happens when software, private equity and private credit's long-favored industry, now faces a constant threat from AI? Where does this money go instead? The obvious answer is AI, but the playbook for success looks very different. For the first time, they provide their outlook on digital infrastructure, a rapidly growing collective of themes supporting the AI build-out and more.As CIO Mike Kelly discusses, the path ahead in the second half is compelling but demanding. In a market focused on innovation and building the future, the discipline to remain focused on investor objectives and portfolio resilience are critical. As AI eats the world, truly differentiated sources of growth and income outside concentrated themes are increasingly valuable for investor portfolios. For actionable insights, enjoy the first episode of Can we talk in private?.Have a question for our experts? I will walk you through what alignment, fulfillment, and purpose mean at a high level, why they matter, and how becoming disconnected from them can leave you feeling restless, dissatisfied, or like something is missing, even when your life looks good on paper. Scott Rathbun is the President and Owner of Apartment Appraisers and Consultants (AA&C) . He discusses the current state of the housing market (both for sale and multifamily rentals) in the Denver Metro Area. This episode provides valuable insights and data-driven analysis for real estate professionals and decision-makers in the Denver Metro Area, as they navigate the current market conditions and plan for the future. Here are key takeaways: Vacancy decreased 115 basis points (bps), from 7.47% last quarter to 6.32%, down 7 bps YoY. Overall vacancy (including properties in lease-up) decreased 147 bps during the quarter to 9.46% and down 142 bps YoY. Absorption of conventional apartments increased from 2,783 units in 1Q 2026 to 6,760 units in 2Q 2026. The T12 absorption increased to 14,220 units, the highest T12 figure in the 22-year history of our survey. The demand for apartments remains high due to the increasing unaffordability of homeownership, leading to a delay in the transition from renting to owning.  The apartment market has been overbuilt in year's past, resulting in rising vacancy rates and the need for landlords to offer significant concessions to attract tenants. These concessions are showing to be improving absorption and vacancy rates, but concessions still remain high.  Check out our last episode with Scott HERE: http://bit.ly/4pJhYqS

If you've been paying attention to points and miles this year and something has felt off, like the ground keeps shifting under the rules you thought you understood, you are not imagining it.   I'm joined again by my good friend and points expert, Kevin Zanes, to make sense of it all. We are hitting pause at the halfway mark of the year to ask what the biggest stories in points, miles, and award travel have really been so far, and more importantly, what those changes tell us about where this whole hobby is headed. This year hasn't just brought the usual devaluations we all expect. It has brought step changes big enough to make both of us reconsider strategies we've relied on for years.   Kevin and I each picked our top three stories and compared notes. We get into the Hyatt award chart overhaul and whether chasing Globalist status still makes sense, the new Qatar restrictions on booking award flights for family and friends, the three new Bilt cards and how they reshuffled where our everyday spend goes, and the way United is now tying its best award space and discounts to holding a co-branded card. I also walk through the Chase change I'm most worried about, a differential transfer ratio to Hyatt that depends on which card you hold, and why I think it could open a floodgate. Listen in as we spend just as much time looking forward as back, on super currencies, newer players like Symphony and Rove, and the rise of the co-branded airline card as a value multiplier.   Whether you've been collecting points for a decade or you just opened your first card, this one is less about the headlines and more about reading the trends underneath them, so you can decide where your own time and attention are actually worth spending for the rest of the year.   Earn up to 5,000 bonus points for opening and funding a new Symphony account here.   Get full show notes and transcript: https://pointmetofirstclass.com/2026-points-miles-mid-year-review    Eager to learn the secrets of award travel so that you can turn your expenses into unforgettable experiences? Today Anne is joined by our Patreon Community Manager, Shannan Malone for a third year as they dive into their reading lives for a midyear check-in. We know this is a conversation that many of you have come to look forward to every year. Anne has been reflecting and planning for this episode for a long time, and she's excited about what Shannan is bringing to share today. You'll hear about what's been happening so far in each of their reading lives and where recalibration or adjustment may be called for as they head into the second half of 2026. We'd love to hear your midyear reflections: please leave a comment on our show notes page to share an answer to any of the questions Shannan and Anne discuss today. You'll find that link along with the list of all of the titles discussed today at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/533. Our Patreon community features more conversations with Anne and our team. We rely on our Patreon community members to keep everything running: their financial support is a critical part of how we create our episodes and pay our team. A huge thank you to everyone who is already a paid supporter, and if you're interested in more conversations like today's or want to be part of making What Should I Read Next? happen each week, we would love it if you'd consider joining us as a monthly or annual member on Patreon.
