What's your biggest fear when it comes to money? I recently came across an article titled The Most Common Money Fears, written by someone I know well—Melanie Lockert, a Brooklyn-based freelance personal finance writer and the author of Dear Debt. Melanie has been on the show before, and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to invite her back to discuss her article and how our fears can hold us back from reaching our financial goals. Lindsay uses a shame-free approach to help people get their minds and money in balance by focusing on the intersection of money and mental health using financial therapy.  We dig deep into when do we help people and when do we harm them by giving money, how to know if we are being taken advantage of and what to consider before giving someone money.   “Being an enabler prevents the person from having the natural consequences of their actions.” - Lindsay Bryan-Podvin “When you continue to save people and prevent them from experiencing consequences, it's a way to postpone making a decision” - Melanie Lockert “When we think about enabling, we also think about removing a person's natural ability to learn how to function a bit more independently.” - Lindsay Bryan-Podvin “Financial abuse is the next level, above and beyond just enabling or some dysfunction or some tension. It is really making it so the person cannot financially escape a relationship or situation.” - Lindsay Bryan-Podvin    What You Will Learn From This Episode  ●     The relationship between financial enabling and codependency ●     The difference between financial enabling and financial generosity ●     How enabling can be a part of a dysfunctional dynamic ●     How to set boundaries when you're from a culture that expects you to support your parents ●     How to set boundaries/expectations on sending money to your family in another country  ●     What to do if your boundaries are met with anger or resentment ●     When is the appropriate time to help out a loved one and what to do if you're being taken advantage of ●     How can you tell if you're being truly financially generous   About Lindsay Bryan-Podvin: Lindsay Bryan-Podvin (she/her) is a biracial financial wellness expert, speaker, and author of the book "The Financial Anxiety Solution." 7 years ago, I attended a financial bloggers conference and it was while I was at this conference that I was dared by friends of mine to start a podcast of my own. At this point, I had only been a guest on one podcast, Stacking Benjamins, to talk about my book, Train Your Way to Financial Fitness, and other than listening to myself on that show, I had never even listened to another podcast. At the time, I had no idea what I would talk about on a show, but I knew I liked to drink and I knew I loved talking about money, and a few months later, Martinis and Your Money the podcast debuted. And today's episode represents my 400th episode.  What started as a dare, has turned into a 7-year and 400 episode adventure that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. To take this trip down memory lane with me, I invited my good friend, and the person who's appeared on the podcast the most, after me, Melanie Lockert, from the Mental Health and Wealth show and previously from Dear Debt. I had such a great time sharing some of my favorite memories of these first 400 episodes and I hope you enjoy hearing them as well. And now here's my dear friend Melanie.  For more information, visit the show notes at https://www.martinisandyourmoney.com/show-notes/episode400

Money and mental health, have you ever wondered if there is a connection? Because there absolutely is. And surprisingly, even though this is something I’ve known for a while, and even experienced in my personal life, I’ve never had anyone on the podcast to talk about it with me. Luckily, I know people. Like Melanie Lockert, who was on episode 21 of the podcast all the way back in 2015. A lot has happened since we recorded that episode. She published a book called Dear Debt, moved from Portland to L.A., and founded a women’s financial literacy event called Lola Retreat. She’s also become very well known as not only a debt expert, but also a money and mental health advocate. And that’s what we’re talking about on the show, hopefully to shed some light on a topic not many people are talking about. This past year we have interviewed over 25 financial authorities on what they do with their personal income as well as how they advise their clients.  Generally these recommendations fall into three categories: savings, debt and relationships. Savings We all know we need to save for big things like retirement and kids college, but sometimes we get shiny object syndrome from something staring us right in the face. We interviewed Chris Hogan on Plaid Radio, Episode 60, Dave Ramsey personality and author of Retire Inspire.  Chris advises that we need to dream big for retirement.  We need to have big goals that are so worth the sacrifice of today we decide to invest for tomorrow.  If we have a spouse or partner he recommends a dream date.  What do you both see for the future? Dorethia Kelly also shared in Plaid Radio Episode 96 tactics on saving for college.  She recommended specialized savings accounts as well talking to your student so they understand their responsibility in the paying for college in addition to making the grade. And along with savings we cannot ignore investing and the need to make our money work just as had as we do.  We have few episodes that address investing (Terry Savage), markets (Bobbie Rebel, Episode 102) and your personal risk levels (John Wasik, Episode 99). Debt Honestly, debt keeps us back from our financial goals.  We had several guests knock out big levels of debt through side hustles (Lisa, Episode 86) and other just save, save, save. Bola from Clever Girl Finance shares her strategy in building up an emergency fund in Episode 119 and Melanie from Dear Debt helps clarify needs versus wants in Episode 106.  Both have different strategies, but are clear on their goals and working their way towards financial freedom.  They want to chose where their money goes not let debt tell them where they have to spend. Relationships As if having a personal relationship with money is not challenging enough, many times we have relationships with others that also involve money.  We are partners, married, parents and children which all come with their own set of money rules. Nick True from Mapped Out Money shares his relationship with love and money in Episode 109.  Following the episode he jumped in a tiny house and is touring the US with his bride so we need to check in on that. We also cover the tough topic of how to talk to your adult parents about money with Emily Stroud in Episode 121.  While we think the holidays can be a great time because the whole family, it's not.  Holidays are full of all kinds of emotions so plan this talk for another time. Plaid Radio also interview the Dr. Phil named "Cheapest Family in America," Steve and Annette from Money Smart Family (Episode 115).  These parents share how they economized with a big family, saved for college and instilled a work ethic in their own children. Check out these great episodes to learn more, get inspired and take control of your financial life.

Needs versus Wants is a life lesson we all learned and need to revisit almost daily.  It’s something we try to explain to our children at the grocery store check out next to all the gum and candy.  It’s something we say in our heads right before we purchase that additional piece of clothing online that looks exactly like something in hanging in our closet.  Melanie Lockert paid off $81,000 in student loans. September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month. Lesbian, trans, bi and gay suicide and suicide attempts happen disproportionally more than the general population, and people who die by suicide are eight times more likely to have debt. Lesbian, Trans, Bi and Gay Suicide and Queer Money We partner with our friend, Melanie Lockert of Dear Debt, who’s bringing more attention to Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and highlighting the effects that debt has on those who become or are severely depressed. As suicide disproportionally affects the LGBT community and queer people have more financial struggles than the general population, we think it’s important to cover these important topics this month. Queer suicide September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. People who die by suicide are eight times more likely to be in debt. LGBTQ people disproportionately attempt suicide relative to the general population. The fifth leading cause of death of all men, queer or straight, is suicide. The problem is so severe that the rate of suicide among men is currently three and a half times that of women. Middle-aged, white men account for seven out of 10 suicides. Suicide rates for men over the age of 75 are nine to 12 times higher than women.  Suicide and suicide attempts are higher in the queer community than the general population. Queer teens and young adults have the highest rate of suicide attempts. Many lesbian, trans, bi and gay suicides happen because the victims feel they have nowhere else to turn or that they have no other options, whether they struggle with their sexual orientation, their finances or both. The more we become aware of the signs and risks of suicides the better we can help prevent them. Substance abuse and the queer community The Advocate announced in 2015 that “gay men have a drinking problem” because the CDC reported that “[queer] people are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, have higher rates of substance abuse, and are more liable to continue drinking into later life.” The CDC further said the reasons for increased stress and depression among queer people are the same reasons they turn to drugs and alcohol. Another reason is that to self-medicate, many queer people find refuge with drugs and alcohol. That refuge is only temporary at best and most drugs, including alcohol, are depressants. Therefore, the self-medication only exacerbates their depression, and the cost of drugs and alcohol add to their financial troubles. Resources to prevent lesbian, trans, bi and gay suicide: Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Blog Tour Debt Drop #EndTheStigma on Twitter #DebtDrop on Twitter The Crisis Text Line, Text 741741 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline Project Semicolon Well Kept Wallet His & Her Money The Center for Disease Control: 800-232-4636 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: 877-696-6775 Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders: 888-234-SAGE National LGBTQ Task Force: 800.528.6257 While we’re talking about being healthier and living better lives this month, we can’t forget about those who feel their lives have no worth. We can’t forget about those who struggle to get out of bed in the morning, let alone make it to the gym. We can’t forget about those who have been conditioned to feel inadequate, disappointed or worthless.  If you or someone you know suffers from depression, substance abuse or thoughts of suicide, talk about it and know that others care.

I talk to Plutus Award winner and debt blogger Melanie Lockert about her experience tackling $81,000 in student loan debt and becoming a full-time freelancer and debt crusher advocate. Long episode description: It was such a pleasure interviewing Melanie Lockert from Dear Debt. I’m an uber nerd and couldn’t contain how much I love Portland (where she currently lives) as you may have gathered from me blurting it out at the beginning of this episode. But in addition to secretly wishing I lived on the West Coast again, I’m also a huge fan of her blog and have been for many years, so it was a huge treat to be able to record this episode with the ultimate debt crusher.  Melanie’s story is one that I’m sure many of you can relate to. She took out a loan to do her bachelor’s degree, then got into her dream school of NYU to do her master’s degree. That meant she had to take on even more student debt. The grand total tallied up to $81,000 in student loan debt. That’s basically a down-payment on a house in Toronto or several very lavish tropical vacations. Melanie ended up leaving New York after graduating to move to Portland to be with her partner. Although Portland is way more affordable to live in than New York, the economy isn’t great and she struggled to find work. But Melanie didn’t let that get her down. She hustled and worked her butt off to find work and eventually turned her blog into a full-time job. And this year she even won a Plutus Award for Best Debt-Focused Personal Finance Blog and was nominated for Best Contributor/Freelancer for Personal Finance. You go girl!
