Every company promotes its best people into leadership, then sets them adrift with zero tools to actually lead. Tess Fyalka has spent 25 years cleaning up that mess. She's the founder of Angle Coaching & Communication, author of Walking the Leadership Ledge, and spent nearly a decade building leadership development infrastructure inside a mid-size commercial construction company before going independent. Two thousand ghostwritten articles and white papers later, she pulled the patterns into a book.In this conversation, Bill and Tess take on the promotion trap that quietly wrecks teams, the lie new leaders tell themselves to avoid hard conversations, and what it actually takes for a star individual contributor to become a real leader of people. Tess walks through "Betsy" — the kind of high-performer companies promote because they assume excellence is transferable, then watch flame out when the wheels come off the bus. She names the Big Lie directly: when a leader avoids a difficult conversation to "protect" their team member, they're really protecting themselves. And the cost of that avoidance compounds. They get into the inside-out nature of leadership development: you can't lead others well until you know your own values, your triggers, and what you're choosing to be in the role. Tess shares her BRRR framework for difficult conversations and why the imaginary scenarios in your head are almost never how the conversation actually plays out. Bill brings his own moments of getting it wrong, including the time he caught himself reflexively defending micromanagement. They close on the metaphor that gives the book its title: when you step into a new leadership role, you're standing on a ledge, and you don't know yet whether the drop is ten inches or ten thousand feet.In This Episode:Why the skills that earn a promotion actively work against you as a managerThe "Big Lie" ineffective leaders tell themselves to avoid hard conversations"Delengaging" — Tess's framework for delegating through genuine engagementThe Betsy problem: what happens when companies promote excellence and expect it to transferHow nearly a decade in commercial construction proved leadership development works anywhereWhy most delegation is really just dumping — and how to tell the differenceAbout the Book:Walking the Leadership Ledge: The "New" Leaders' Guide to Building Resilience and Confidence at Every Step. Most parents want their athlete to play college basketball. The problem? Many athletes say they want it too—but their daily habits tell a different story. In this episode of It's Just Different, Ashley Roberts sits down with longtime grassroots basketball coach Ed Durham to discuss the realities of youth basketball, recruiting, and player development in today's game. From coaching elite talent and navigating the AAU landscape to helping families understand what it actually takes to play at the next level, Ed shares unfiltered insight on the challenges facing athletes and parents today. The conversation explores the growing gap between expectations and reality, why honesty is missing from many recruiting conversations, and how the explosion of AAU teams has impacted player development. Ed also shares his perspective on the current state of Texas girls basketball and why accountability, commitment, and realistic goal-setting are more important than ever. The truth? Not every athlete needs to be a Division I player to have a successful basketball journey—but every athlete needs a plan, honest feedback, and a willingness to put in the work. This conversation dives into:• Why parents and athletes often have different goals• The disconnect between recruiting dreams and work ethic• How the transfer portal has changed recruiting opportunities• The impact of AAU expansion on player development• Why honesty matters in recruiting conversations• Challenges facing Texas girls basketball today• How families can make smarter decisions about teams, camps, and trainingAbout the GuestEd Durham is a veteran grassroots basketball coach with decades of experience developing athletes at multiple levels of the game. What does it take to go from startup all the way to exit, multiple times, across different sectors? Mike Krupit has done it. He's been part of three IPOs, including CDNOW, where he served as COO and helped take the company public. He's also been through the harder side: building, growing, and winding down companies when the math stopped working. In this conversation, Bill and Mike dig into what 30 years of building companies actually teaches you. The most surprising lesson, in Mike's words: it's not about the idea, the product, or the timing. It's about having the right people in the right seats. And in the AI era, that hasn't changed; AI is a multiplier on top of people, not a replacement for them. They get into the founder-to-CEO transition Mike has lived multiple times, the four accountabilities a real CEO holds (vision, fiduciary, people, outside face) and why everything else needs to be someone else's job. Mike shares the CDNOW story straight: a planned merger with Columbia House that fell through at the last minute, the dot-com bust hitting at the same time, preparing for Chapter 11 while also running a sale process, and a late acquisition by Bertelsmann at $3 a share when the stock had once peaked near $39. He also opens up about his last startup, where he chose to return capital and shut it down rather than take more money and put a team in greater jeopardy. In This Episode:Why people — not ideas or products — are the real driver of company successThe four accountabilities that define a real CEOThe CDNOW story: from IPO to near-bankruptcy and a last-minute acquisitionWhat bankruptcy and shutting down a startup teach you that winning never willWhy most companies have a comfort problem, not a culture problemHow AI multiplies great people but doesn't replace the need for themConnect with Mike:Trajectify: trajectify.comLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/mkrupitYouTube: Building Better BusinessesConnect with Bill:Website: ScalingCoach.comLinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/billgallagherFree Q20 Growth Diagnostic: ScalingCoach.com/Q20Busy is Broken — Bill's new book, coming September 2026. ✨ Provision Before the Promise ✨God Was Working It Out Before I Realized It.Sometimes we become so focused on the big breakthrough that we overlook the little blessings happening right in front of us.A bill gets paid.Unexpected help shows up.The exact thing you needed somehow finds its way to you.And you realize…God has been moving the whole time. This episode is about recognizing provision before the promise fully arrives and understanding that just because you don't have the entire picture yet doesn't mean God isn't working behind the scenes on your behalf. The blessing may not always come all at once.Sometimes it comes in pieces. And if you don't learn to appreciate provision in the process, you may miss the evidence that your promise is already in motion.
✨ The Process Revealed What the Promise Couldn't ✨The Revelation Inside the Process. Some lessons could only be learned in the middle of the process. Not after the breakthrough. Not after the shift. Not after everything finally came together.Right here… in the uncertainty. This episode is about the revelation that comes during transition — the people, patterns, habits, and truths that become visible only when life stretches you. And while some revelations may be uncomfortable, clarity is still a blessing.Because sometimes the process is not just preparing you…it's revealing what you needed to see before the promise arrives.

Drawing on his work across major film and television projects, Yocum discusses how much of what audiences hear is created in post production, how he approaches mixing for the LFE channel using SVS subwoofers, including the SB 4000, and why he often relies on dual subwoofer setups instead of one. But this conversation goes far beyond aesthetics, we also unpack the explosive role of AI in healthcare, the concept of longevity “escape velocity,” and what it really means to preserve your body so you can take advantage of what's coming next in medicine. For more on Dr. Terry Dubrow, follow him on:Dr. & Mrs. Guinea Pig on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@heatherdubrow Listen to The Between Us Podcast: https://www.instagram.com/betweenusthepodcast/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drdubrow/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrDubrow Thanks to my Sponsors:Save 25% on your first month at Ritual.com/OVER50Use code OVER50 for 15% off the Premium Starter Kit at BranchBasics.comGet 10% off your first order sitewide with code FLOURISHING at OSEAMalibu.comGo to Leesa.com for 20% off mattresses PLUS get an extra $50 off with promo code OVER50, exclusive for my listeners.Head to Manukora.com/FLOURISHING to save up to 31% plus $25 worth of free gifts with the Starter Kit, which comes with an MGO 850+ Manuka Honey jar, 5 honey travel sticks, a wooden spoon, and a guidebook! For a limited time, Hollow Socks is having a Buy 2, Get 2 Free Sale. Join Chord Electronics' digital audio consultant Rob Watts as he dives deep into the challenges of reproducing lifelike sound from 16-bit/44.1kHz PCM. From his groundbreaking DAC designs—spanning $650 to $20,000—to why off-the-shelf chips can't compete, Rob explains how his unique approach goes beyond conventional measurement-based audio engineering. He also previews Chord's next flagship product, the Quartet M Scaler, which will build on the Hugo M Scaler, and shares his thoughts on DSD, the importance of cables, and hidden sonic factors like RF and power supply issues. What happens when you take ceremonial magic out of the ritual room and into the fields? This week I sat down once again with Todd Elliott, author of the newly released The Cunning Farmer: Agrarian Magical Practices, Mythology, and Folklore, to explore the rich intersection of esoteric tradition and working the land.Todd shares his journey from urban life to farming in Kentucky, where over nearly three decades he has woven together Western ceremonial magic, astrology, animism, and shamanic practice into a living, breathing spiritual path rooted in the soil. Drawing on the cunning folk of 17th-century Britain, the folklore collected by James Frazer and Alexander Carmichael, and the philosophical traditions of Hermeticism and Neoplatonism, Todd has developed a uniquely eclectic approach to land-based magic that is both historically grounded and deeply personal.Together we dig into how astrology and magic actually work, the role of spirits and consciousness in the natural world, and why restoring a sense of the sacred to agriculture matters more than ever. Todd also shares stories of ancient Adena mounds and Paleo-Indian arrowheads found on his own land, and reflects on what it means to work with the spirits of a place with respect and reverence.Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or simply curious about the magical traditions woven into our relationship with nature, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.Show notes:The Cunning Farmer is available now.https://thecunningfarmer.substack.comKeep in touch?https://linktr.ee/darraghmason

Problemistas! Welcome back to another banter-filled episode where we prove that problem-solving is what we do best, even if it takes us a solid chunk of time to actually get to the problems. Problem Solving is what we're good at, and this week we confront some real thinkers. We also confirm that it's not a great idea to kick pipes whilst they're lodged up your arse. We're introduced to the AI chat bots taking over people's computers, and holding their own meetings about their "owners" behavior. Providing the best insight available on the interweb, we discuss the difference between an ick and a phobia, prompted by Heated Rivalry, we hear how a massage therapist navigates the ups and downs of "boner guy", and provide some great advice to a lovely gentleman who feels he's overthinking his relationship. Most families don't have a money problem. They have a leadership problem. In this powerful episode of Mindset Mastery Moments, Dr. Alisa Whyte sits down with Wealth Manager LaVaisha Davis to break down why wealth starts—and often stops—with the same generation. If you're a first-generation wealth builder, entrepreneur, or high-income professional, this conversation will shift how you think about financial leadership.LaVaisha introduces the concept of the Virtual Family Office (VFO) — a strategic wealth framework used by ultra-high-net-worth families to centralize advisors, eliminate financial leaks, reduce taxes, protect assets, and build true multi-generational systems. This isn't about buying financial products. It's about becoming the Family CEO of your financial legacy.Inside this episode:• Why traditional financial planning fails first-generation wealth creators• The leadership gap sabotaging generational wealth• How scattered CPAs, attorneys, and advisors create costly misalignment• Why family dynamics—not markets—are often the greatest wealth risk• The strategic structure wealthy families use to preserve and multiply assets• How one family member can break generational financial cyclesIf you've been earning more but still feel financially fragmented, this episode will challenge and equip you to think, plan, and grow like the 1%.Connect with LaVaisha Davis
"Mystic Alex" nailed her prediction for the Super Bowl result. Jeff also nails his two clearly not so favorite podcasters Jay Shetty and Mel Robbins on social, calling out BS double standards.
