What's your biggest fear when it comes to money? I recently came across an article titled The Most Common Money Fears, written by someone I know well—Melanie Lockert, a Brooklyn-based freelance personal finance writer and the author of Dear Debt. Melanie has been on the show before, and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to invite her back to discuss her article and how our fears can hold us back from reaching our financial goals. Research shows money stress can make people up to 20 times more likely to make a suicide attempt. We saw this issue come to light recently with the popular TV show 'Squid Games'. Financial hardship is a common problem. The average American is $52,930 in debt. This includes money owed for mortgages and leases as well as student loans; it also includes credit card debts that many of us are very aware can have physiological effects on our lives - like stomach issues or headaches. But did you know financial hardship is a major risk factor for suicide? In this episode, we talk with Melanie Lockert, author of the blog and book 'Dear Debt' and host of the Mental Health and Wealth Show. Her blog and podcast highlight the intersection of money and mental health and provide content and resources for those struggling. The site and the podcast aim to support those who are struggling with debt and depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and more. This episode is so needed for anyone who struggles with debt and/or mental health.

7 years ago, I attended a financial bloggers conference and it was while I was at this conference that I was dared by friends of mine to start a podcast of my own. At this point, I had only been a guest on one podcast, Stacking Benjamins, to talk about my book, Train Your Way to Financial Fitness, and other than listening to myself on that show, I had never even listened to another podcast. At the time, I had no idea what I would talk about on a show, but I knew I liked to drink and I knew I loved talking about money, and a few months later, Martinis and Your Money the podcast debuted. And today's episode represents my 400th episode. What started as a dare, has turned into a 7-year and 400 episode adventure that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. To take this trip down memory lane with me, I invited my good friend, and the person who's appeared on the podcast the most, after me, Melanie Lockert, from the Mental Health and Wealth show and previously from Dear Debt. I had such a great time sharing some of my favorite memories of these first 400 episodes and I hope you enjoy hearing them as well. And now here's my dear friend Melanie. Student debt, financial literacy, and mental health are all intertwined. However, striking the correct balance between these three components is not as simple as it sounds. In today's episode of the Pursuit of Learning, we are having a mind-blowing conversation with someone who has mastered the art of balancing above three elements mentioned above through the complex and long journey she had. Melanie Lockert, a freelance personal finance writer, podcaster, event organizer at Lola Retreat, and a mental health advocate, joins us today to talk about how she reached her debt-free life after years of hard work. We started the conversation with her story behind her first blog post to her first book, Dear Debt: A Story About Breaking Up with Debt. Interestingly her first blog happened to be a result of her depression about debts, and she documented her path out of $81,000 in student loan debt on her blog. Since then, she has been aspiring to write relatable, sympathetic, and helpful material, hoping to make a difference with her words. As of now, she has her work featured on Allure, Vice, Credit Karma, and Business Insider.Aside from that, she is the host of the podcast The Mental Health and Wealth Show and the organizer of the Lola Retreat, a women's money-focused gathering. We talk about her experience in arts education and nonprofits, where she worked before entering the finance industry. On the other hand, five years ago, by the age of 31 years, she could pay off all her debt. However, until that, she had not invested at all. She broadly explains the sacrifice she had to become a debt-free person today. Wrapping up the discussion, she emphasizes the necessity of changing our minds to become the person we want to be. The more women I talk to, the more I realize that almost all of us have “issues” with money. We either aren't earning enough, are living beyond our means, are caught in the trap of student loan and/ or credit card debt, or are terrified to ask for what we actually need to float our boat. And this doesn't even begin to cover the fact that most of us grew up hearing all manner of money nonsense from our parents that virtually guarantees we won't be improving our relationship with money any time soon. Oh, yeah, it's complicated all right. So, I invited speaker and writer, Melanie Lockert, author of the best-selling book ‘Dear Debt”, host of the Mental Health & Wealth Podcast, and a woman who has learned a thing or two about money, the hard way. She is also co-founder of the Lola Retreat which helps bold women face their fears, own their dreams, and be in control of their finances. One of the things that is so frustrating about the human brain is how often it cranks out negative self-talk, no matter how smart, capable, or successful we are. In this solo episode of The Driven Woman Podcast, I spill the tea on how the brain actually works, why there is nothing wrong with you just because you have negative thoughts about yourself (spoiler alert, just about everyone does….) but how simple it actually is to change them and think better thoughts. With this episode this week, we're doing something a little different. Back in 2016 and ‘17 I had a little podcast called Monday Morning Mimosas. This is a podcast I did completely on my own and really enjoyed doing. My focus was on interviewing up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the personal finance space and beyond. There was one conversation I had with one of my online friends, Melanie Lockert, that really resonates today. So I'm going to be sharing this episode in honor of women's history month, and Melanie and I are going to talk about becoming an entrepreneur as a woman and women's equal pay.Topics covered in this episode: Women and the fear of asking for a raiseWomen's right to equal payThe personal feelings and uncomfortable conversations around moneyThe realizations we have as young professionals transitioning into entrepreneurshipCheck us out here: https://instagram.com/sarahalpotterhttps://instagram.com/letsgetsocialofficialhttps://www.instagram.com/mentalhealthandwealth https://www.instagram.com/melanielockert

Money and mental health, have you ever wondered if there is a connection? Because there absolutely is. And surprisingly, even though this is something I’ve known for a while, and even experienced in my personal life, I’ve never had anyone on the podcast to talk about it with me. Luckily, I know people. Like Melanie Lockert, who was on episode 21 of the podcast all the way back in 2015. A lot has happened since we recorded that episode. She published a book called Dear Debt, moved from Portland to L.A., and founded a women’s financial literacy event called Lola Retreat. She’s also become very well known as not only a debt expert, but also a money and mental health advocate. And that’s what we’re talking about on the show, hopefully to shed some light on a topic not many people are talking about. Student debt, or debt of any kind, is a weight that impacts your entire life. The weight of debt carries a range of emotions from shame, anxiety, and depression to feelings of isolation and inadequacy. Many women struggle to find peace with that debt, let alone financial freedom. Typical debt solutions are often oversimplified—extreme budgeting, cutting back on lattes…there has to be more we can do. There has to be someone we can turn to! For a while, there wasn’t. That is exactly where my guest Melanie Lockert saw a need, and why she created a community as a response to that need Join us for the conversation! http://bit.ly/2Awr0PD
Needs versus Wants is a life lesson we all learned and need to revisit almost daily. It’s something we try to explain to our children at the grocery store check out next to all the gum and candy. It’s something we say in our heads right before we purchase that additional piece of clothing online that looks exactly like something in hanging in our closet. Melanie Lockert paid off $81,000 in student loans. She is a freelance writer and all-around side hustler currently living in Los Angeles, California. She runs a blog DearDebt.com where she shares her financial inspiration.
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness month. Lesbian, trans, bi and gay suicide and suicide attempts happen disproportionally more than the general population, and people who die by suicide are eight times more likely to have debt. Lesbian, Trans, Bi and Gay Suicide and Queer Money We partner with our friend, Melanie Lockert of Dear Debt, who’s bringing more attention to Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and highlighting the effects that debt has on those who become or are severely depressed. As suicide disproportionally affects the LGBT community and queer people have more financial struggles than the general population, we think it’s important to cover these important topics this month. Queer suicide September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. People who die by suicide are eight times more likely to be in debt. LGBTQ people disproportionately attempt suicide relative to the general population. The fifth leading cause of death of all men, queer or straight, is suicide. The problem is so severe that the rate of suicide among men is currently three and a half times that of women. Middle-aged, white men account for seven out of 10 suicides. Suicide rates for men over the age of 75 are nine to 12 times higher than women. Suicide and suicide attempts are higher in the queer community than the general population. Queer teens and young adults have the highest rate of suicide attempts. Many lesbian, trans, bi and gay suicides happen because the victims feel they have nowhere else to turn or that they have no other options, whether they struggle with their sexual orientation, their finances or both. The more we become aware of the signs and risks of suicides the better we can help prevent them. Substance abuse and the queer community The Advocate announced in 2015 that “gay men have a drinking problem” because the CDC reported that “[queer] people are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, have higher rates of substance abuse, and are more liable to continue drinking into later life.” The CDC further said the reasons for increased stress and depression among queer people are the same reasons they turn to drugs and alcohol. Another reason is that to self-medicate, many queer people find refuge with drugs and alcohol. That refuge is only temporary at best and most drugs, including alcohol, are depressants. Therefore, the self-medication only exacerbates their depression, and the cost of drugs and alcohol add to their financial troubles. When you think of debt, numbers and interest rates probably come to mind. But debt isn't always about the numbers. Our guest today is Melanie Lockert, a blogger at Dear Debt and someone who recently paid off $81,000 in student loan debt. Melanie explains that the reason we go into debt and have a hard time getting out of it, is emotional. She points out that: “If it really was just about spend less, earn more, all of us would be rich and never face debt. And we'd all be successful, but a lot of us aren't and that's because we're dealing with these money issues, these emotional issues that come out through debt and finances and a scarcity mindset and there's so much to deal with.” During our conversation, she uses words like panicked, anxious, ;stressed, overwhelmed and depressed to describe how she felt about her debt. As trustees, we hear these kind of emotional descriptions from clients daily, so Melanie offers listeners a few strategies for facing debt head-on.
I talk to Plutus Award winner and debt blogger Melanie Lockert about her experience tackling $81,000 in student loan debt and becoming a full-time freelancer and debt crusher advocate. Long episode description: It was such a pleasure interviewing Melanie Lockert from Dear Debt. I’m an uber nerd and couldn’t contain how much I love Portland (where she currently lives) as you may have gathered from me blurting it out at the beginning of this episode. But in addition to secretly wishing I lived on the West Coast again, I’m also a huge fan of her blog and have been for many years, so it was a huge treat to be able to record this episode with the ultimate debt crusher. Melanie’s story is one that I’m sure many of you can relate to. She took out a loan to do her bachelor’s degree, then got into her dream school of NYU to do her master’s degree. That meant she had to take on even more student debt. The grand total tallied up to $81,000 in student loan debt. That’s basically a down-payment on a house in Toronto or several very lavish tropical vacations. Melanie ended up leaving New York after graduating to move to Portland to be with her partner. Although Portland is way more affordable to live in than New York, the economy isn’t great and she struggled to find work. But Melanie didn’t let that get her down. She hustled and worked her butt off to find work and eventually turned her blog into a full-time job. And this year she even won a Plutus Award for Best Debt-Focused Personal Finance Blog and was nominated for Best Contributor/Freelancer for Personal Finance. You go girl! If you’re looking for a podcast episode to inspire you to break up with debt or just conquer something that seems completely impossible, you’ll definitely want to listen to this episode.
