Cheers to the spirit drinkers! This week Greg is on a road trip in Mammoth, CA and he's stopped by Shelter Distilling to talk with Matt Hammer and Jason Senior, two of the founders. Matt is a former professional snowboarder turned coffee-roaster who met Jason (and Karl) while they were heading up the brewing operations at Mammoth Brewing Company. The guys discuss opening up a distillery in California, the laws that have allowed that to take place, and what physical labor went into opening their distillery and tasting room. We also talk about Matt's background as a snowboarder, what got him into coffee, and the transition into distilling. On Jason's side, we talk about his start in brewing, his impressive career (and awards) as the head brewer at Mammoth Brewing, and the learning curve involved when he moved to distilling. We also talk about the new laws that have allowed Shelter to open up, how spirits are distilled, differences between different spirits and terminology (such as single malt and batch), and so much more. On top of all that, we sampled 15 of their amazing spirits and beers as a guided tasting for anyone that comes into the tasting room.A huge thank you to Jason, Matt, and Gena from Shelter Distilling for an amazing time and some great drinks. This week on High-Dere we give the world something everyone wants out of a weekly show. Enough episodes to fill a full year!!!! Today Joe brings to the table an article about a particular pesticide present and engineered into BT crops by Monsanto that is actually causing new allergies in people (like gluten intolerance) and literally eating away at our intestines. Dr. Jaydee Hanson’s words walk us through the complex science of GMOs which, like it or not, are already on your plate every day! Then, after a commercial break, Ian reads a tale he ran across about Olivia Mabel, a woman in Texas who was found mysteriously dead in her house. Local legend has morphed the story into one of potential Tulpa creation, so it definitely caught our attention. All this and an Epic IPA by Mammoth Brewing Company on this week’s episode of High-Dere. If you want to read more on this week’s topics, click the links below!
