Send us a textIn this episode, Yvonne and Rafael chat with Joseph Sousa, Workers' Compensation Program Manager for the City of San Diego. In our conversation, we learn from the perspective of a self-insured, self-administered workers' compensation program administrator, and what is important to that stakeholder perspective. One thing that stands out is the numerous benefits of operating a self-insured, self-administered program for both the employer and employees. The employer gains total control over various aspects, especially compared to purchasing an insurance policy from an external insurer. Since all employees work for the same entity, there is a strong sense of pride and compassion when it comes to supporting colleagues. The City of San Diego is regarded as a gold standard in workers' compensation programs. Some key elements of San Diego's program include:- An established culture of wellness and safety- Early intervention- Peer support and compassion for fellow employees- Effective communication- Self-efficacy, where injured employees take ownership of their recovery- Quality partnerships with medical providersJoin us as we delve deeper into Joseph's insights and learn more about the City of San Diego's workers' compensation program.More about City of San Diego: https://www.sandiego.gov/Council of Self-Insured Public Agencies (COSIPA): https://cosipa.org/Public Agency Risk Management Association (PARMA): https://parma.com/¡Muchas Gracias! Juice (1992) Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba and Coy Jandreau dive into Juice, the 1992 crime thriller directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. This film captures the raw energy of Harlem through the lives of four teenagers—Q (Omar Epps, Love & Basketball, Higher Learning), Bishop (Tupac Shakur, Poetic Justice, Above the Rim), Raheem (Khalil Kain, Love Jones, Girlfriends), and Steel (Jermaine Hopkins, Lean on Me, Phat Beach)—as they grapple with friendship, loyalty, and the dangerous pursuit of respect, or "juice." The film's iconic moments include the tense convenience store robbery that sets the plot in motion, Bishop's chilling descent into violence and power obsession, and Q's internal conflict between his DJ dreams and his loyalty to his friends. With unforgettable lines like Bishop's cold declaration, “I am crazy... but you know what else? I don't give a f**,”* the film delivers a deep exploration of power, control, and identity. Supporting cast members include Cindy Herron (En Vogue, Witch Hunt) as Yolanda, Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Avengers) as Trip, and Queen Latifah (Chicago, Living Single) as Ruffhouse M.C. Juice remains a cornerstone in hip-hop cinema, blending gritty storytelling with a cultural backdrop that highlights the pressures of inner-city life. Tupac Shakur's breakout performance in the film only cemented his legacy, both as an actor and as a voice of his generation. To celebrate Tupac's influence, here are some of his most iconic songs: “California Love,” “Changes,” “Hit ‘Em Up,” “Dear Mama,” “Hail Mary,” “Keep Ya Head Up,” “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” “Ambitionz Az a Ridah,” “Me Against the World,” and “I Ain't Mad at Cha.” Follow Coy Jandreau: Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@coyjandreau?l... My guest re joins the podcast after almost 3 years. Leonard was the star of Season 1 Episode 10. We catch up with him. He was injured on the job and now is involved in investigating work comp claims. He gives his insight and some advice on how to handle work place injuries. It sounds dry but it is really interesting. The episode goes into a few really good topics and rants - Unions, craigslist, promotions, girl bosses, and so much more. This in my opinion will go down as one of the classics. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticMustard & Travis Scott: Parking Lot Paves the Way for "Faith of a Mustard Seed"Earlier this week, Mustard officially confirmed a fiery collaboration with none other than Travis Scott on the aptly titled "Parking Lot." This single serves as a taste of Mustard's forthcoming album, "Faith of a Mustard Seed," dropping July 26, 2024. With his last album, "Perfect Ten," debuting at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, anticipation is high for Mustard's next project.Travis Scott's Arrest and Social Media ShenanigansBeyond the studio, Travis Scott found himself in the headlines for a recent arrest in Florida for disorderly intoxication and trespassing. True to his form, Scott took a lighthearted approach, sharing a humorous mugshot edit on social media, even capitalizing on the situation with merchandise featuring the altered mugshot.Kendrick Lamar's Juneteenth Concert: A Celebration of West Coast Hip-HopThe hip-hop world witnessed a powerful moment of unity at Kendrick Lamar's Juneteenth concert at the Forum in Inglewood, California. The star-studded event featured fellow West Coast giants like Tyler, The Creator, Steve Lacy, YG, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, and a surprise appearance by Dr. Dre himself. The highlight? A rousing performance of "Still D.R.E." and "California Love" with Dr. Dre joining Kendrick on stage. This concert further solidified Kendrick's commitment to West Coast unity, bringing together a diverse range of LA artists for a historic night.Lamar vs. Drake: The Feud Heats UpThe simmering feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake reached a boiling point with Lamar's final verse on his recent hit "Not Like Us." This verse critiques Drake for inauthenticity and even uses the term "colonizer." The longstanding beef, originating from Lamar's verse on Big Sean's "Control" in 2013, highlights the contrasting styles of these two hip-hop titans. Drake is known for his focus on wealth, memes, and constant collaborations, while Lamar is celebrated for his introspective concept albums and minimal social media presence.Join us as we unpack these stories and analyze their impact on the ever-evolving landscape of hip-hop.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

History provides the opportunity to study the past through the lens of the present, but what makes history so exciting for many of us is those moments when we truly feel transported back to those earlier days to see the world through the eyes of our predecessors–pioneers who laid the foundation for the lives we experience now. And the stories of the past become even more rich and vivid when they involve our own ancestors. I'm excited to share my conversation with an author who transports us back nearly 100 years–to a time when the promise of southern California was just beginning. It was a time when the California coastline was still wild and uncharted, the beaches were pristine, and there was no traffic! And my guest allows us to experience the remarkable sights and sounds of these different times through a beautiful love story. Whether you're interested in the history of California, romance, or how individuals can shape the course of history, you're going to enjoy my conversation with author John Thill. About the Guest John Wilcox Thill is the author of A California Love Story. It's the romantic story of Ray and Dora, John's grandparents recreated through a series of forgotten love letters from his grandparents' courtship. Within their worn folds, John found a story that was both timeless and filled with emotion, all happening in an era in American history when the future of California was still taking shape. John is a graduate of San Diego State University and spent much of his career in managing and producing video content for large organizations. Later, he transitioned to corporate learning and development, and became a partner in a global talent development company. On this, the 100th episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson interviews James Beard Award–winning author, chef, and Netflix star Samin Nosrat. The San Diego native and Oakland resident shares how she began her culinary career in Alice Water's kitchen at Chez Panisse: “I started, and I was pretty much immediately just enchanted by this place,” Nosrat recalls. “I'd never worked anywhere like that, where everybody cared so much and was just such a perfectionist.” It was there that she came up with the idea for her New York Times bestselling cookbook Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, which would later become a hit Netflix series. “I saw that it was really these four elements, salt, fat, acid, and heat, that were kind of the points on the compass. And I even went up to one of the chefs at one point, and I said, ‘I think I understand now.'” Throughout the interview, Nosrat highlights recipes from her cookbook, names some of her go-to East Bay eateries, and celebrates the state's vibrant food culture, from local farmers' markets to ethnically diverse restaurants to her favorite spot for a bean-and-cheese burrito. Finally, Nosrat takes the California Questionnaire, offering insights into her culinary and travel favorites across the Golden State.
