You know that giant bin at Best Buy that carries all those DVDs? Think of this latest episode of the Happy Half Hour podcast like that bin. There's a little bit of everything. So, prepare for a lesson on machaca and Vietnam trivia. After finally being removed by Petco Park security, hosts Troy and David are back at the SDM office catching listeners up on all the food happenings around America's Finest City. The duo discuss the splashiest move yet from Consortium Holdings, the re-opening of the storied Lafayette Hotel on Monday, complete with bowling lanes, an even sexier pool, and Instagram-worthy restrooms. Zebra-prints, chandeliers, fringe, velvets, gaudy trinkets, reds, blues, greens—the new $31M hotel is straight out of a Moulin Rouge set. In food news, after starting out as a farmers market vendor, Smokin' J's has opened another location in the Gaslamp Quarter. Similar to their Poway location, the joint is providing customers with brisket, pulled pork, chicken, St. Louis ribs and enough TVs to satisfy Troy and David. Now that Michelin is finally paying attention to San Diego (thank you, Addison), North Park's Mabel's Gone Fishing received a Bib Gourmand and Troy shows his psychic abilities by predicting another star coming to town soon. (Days later, we learned of Valle being awarded its first Michelin star.) Saigon Coffee has opened their first brick-and-mortar in North Park, and just like Smokin' J's, it started as a farmers market vendor. Vietnamese coffee traditionally takes a long time to make, but Saigon uses special filters to speed up the process. “It's so damn delicious,” Troy says. Brine Box also recently opened in Oceanside as a little stand on the pier dedicated to great British food and zero-waste. And it's not all fried fare: shoutout to the seared albacore and Korean barbecue prawns. Other openings include SoiPB from Khwanta Osanai and Truffle in North Park. With a name like that, David says you can even expect the fungi to come shaved on ice cream. Finally, Phil Esteban has opened another White Rice, this time in Linda Vista. David and Troy end by discussing the closing of Sapporo's Anchor Steam in San Francisco. It feels a little too close to home now that Sapporo acquired Stone Brewing Co. Finally, in “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David recommends the wings at The Regal Beagle. “Their blue cheese dressing was very obviously homemade,” he says. Troy praises National City's Mujer Divina and their excellent machaca. Stay tuned for next week's episode of Happy Half Hour and keep up with David and Troy by following them on Instagram. David can be followed @davidelimartin. Troy can be followed @heytroyjohnson.

Doom carries on the proud tradition of terrible video game movies. It's bad, folks. Real bad. Most offensive, it basically does nothing to harness the insanity of the property that inspired it. This is a Doom movie in name only. Sure, the BFG is in it, sort of; and there are hellacious creatures. They are just mostly uninspired fare. Well, maybe they're inspired, but you can't see them because the whole film is so damn dark. Outside of the first-person shooter scene, which channels the spirit of the game excellently, this thing is as boring as they come. With a poor script, trope-tastic characters, and aimless direction, Doom opened the portal to hell for anyone dumb enough to pay to see it. Anecdotally, McCheese and I were two of the dolts who did. Worse than offending your average moviegoer, it grossed a dismal $58.7 million on a budget of $65 million; and it was battered by critics. It took such a beating—18% on Rotten Tomatoes with 138 reviews—not even "God Mode" could save it. Anyway, sit back, use your chainsaw to open a Liquid Poem Double IPA from Stone Brewing Co., and don't get stuck in the nano-wall! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, and Mayor McCheese are priming the BFG (to shoot absolutely nothing)! An avid craft beer enthusiast and world traveler, he can often be found among imbibers across the planet, enjoying and extolling the virtues of great beer. Since Greg started the company with President and co-founder Steve Wagner in 1996, Stone has become one of the fastest-growing and highest-rated breweries in the world, thanks to dedicated fans and a determination to brew nothing but truly remarkable beer. New Year's Eve sucks. I'm sorry, but it's the truth. Like the holiday itself, it's an exercise in excess—boasting an A-list cast, yet giving them nothing to do. It's mind-numbingly stupid and obscenely scripted. The fact that it expects you to like these characters is, in itself, anger-inducing. You will hate these people. All of them, but especially Bon Jovi—who inexplicably doesn't play himself. Instead, he's a sappy musician named Jensen. Honestly, the only way to get through it is to drink. Heavily. Drink like it's the countdown to the ball dropping, only it lasts two hours. Drink so much that you make out with a total stranger and forget that you ever watched it. And don't fear the hangover. Your headache from this movie's dialogue will be far worse. With that out of the way, sit back, quell your oncoming rage with a few Enjoy By 01.01.21 from Stone Brewing Co., and toast to the end of 2020! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Welcome back to the Happy Half Hour! While San Diego may be the craft beer capital of the US, we also have a less-talked-about but flourishing wine scene. We’re learning all about it from Denise Clarke, owner of Altipiano Vineyard in Escondido. Altipiano is also the only Black- and female-owned winery in San Diego, and we ran a profile on Denise in the current issue. Denise shares her journey in becoming a boutique winemaker. She worked in human resources for many years, and her family owned an old avocado grove in Escondido. In 2007 a fire destroyed the grove, and in its place Denise decided to pursue her passion for wine and take the leap of starting her own vineyard. She explains how the microclimate in the hills of Escondido is similar to Tuscany, and is the perfect place to grow the Italian varietals she specializes in. The process of becoming a winemaker without classical training was a difficult one, and we learned it can take three years of production for a wine to become commercially viable. Denise says she found mentors along the way, including the group of 15–20 female winemakers in the county who lean on one another for support. There have been challenges, especially with the lack of inclusivity in the wine industry—Denise says people assume her husband is the winemaker at Altipiano, and at times she hasn’t been taken seriously. Over the years, her wines have won awards, and she’s known for producing bold reds like sangiovese and barbera. She also shares that she comes from a family of farmers, and she discovered that one of her relatives was also a winemaker. Tune in to find out more! In Hot Plates, we had a lot to discuss. First, the big news that restaurants in San Diego are allowed to have indoor dining at 25 percent capacity. New eateries recently opened at Westfield UTC: Rice Goban, Wushiland Boba, and Happy Lemon, which has Taiwanese cheese tea. The owners of Puesto bought the former Whisknlade space in La Jolla and are turning it into an Italian restaurant, and Stone Brewing Co. has named Maria Stipp their new CEO. In Two People for Takeout/Two People for $50, Denise said she likes the tournedos Oscar and outdoor dining setup at Carvers Steaks and Chops in Rancho Bernardo. Troy’s pick (which he jokes is more like Two People, $300) is the wagyu beef and caviar bump at Born & Raised. David talked about re-creating the experience of going to a ballgame at Petco Park by getting takeout from Hodad’s. My pick is the fish and shrimp tacos at La Reyna del Sur Mariscos truck in University Heights. Thank you for listening! As always, we want to hear from our listeners. Do you have a question for Troy? The Ghost and the Darkness is an account of the Tsavo man-eaters—a pair of lions who terrorized a Kenyan-Ugandan railway construction camp from March to December of 1898. The history of the British presence in that region is complicated; and it is one, we will not touch on here. The movie barely does either. Despite that, its issues lie elsewhere. From poor Irish accents to Michael Douglas hamming it up as big-game hunter Charles Remington, The Ghost and the Darkness doesn't quite know what it wants to be. Is it a historical drama? An animal attack-infused thriller? Or, more simply, some sort of bizarre piece of Michael Douglas performance art that is meant to boggle the mind? Point of fact, it's all three. Those elements don't necessarily mesh well together. It's a shame, really, because this historical tale of killer cats run amok seems ripe for big screen adaptation. And there are things here that do work well. It's wonderfully shot, used real-life lions, and does a more than adequate job of transporting you to 1890s Africa. At the end of the day, unfortunately, the 30 minutes of Douglas mugging for the lens kill the picture—just as John Henry Patterson (Val Kilmer) did his feline foes. But that absurd turn is also why you need to see it. So sit back, tap a couple of Fear. Movie. Lions Double IPAs from Stone Brewing Co., and try your best to avoid the malaria slaughter hospital! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla, are torching the brush to lure out the fearsome beasts. This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – How do you effectively romanticize colonialism? Well, you attempt to make "Jaws with paws." (00:00) Lingering Questions and the Reality Wasn't Real Enough Challenge – After fielding a few more questions from Capt. Cash, he challenges us to identify which elements of historical dramas were embellished to make the movie seem more realistic. (48:01) Recommendations – A couple of Kilmer-centric recommendations are joined by an animated favorite. And next up: It's a podcast Royal Rumble! The boys from The Double Turn join us to break down Lethal Weapon 4! After a bit of a break, it's time again for Whatcha Readin'? Round 9! Jeff, Christie and their favorite guests discuss transformational, thought provoking books about sales and life. Joining us this week is the always amiable DeJaun Brown, VP of Sales for Fringe. He introduces the book, All You Have To Do Is Ask, by Wayne Baker. It's an indispensable guide to offering up help, and being ready to freely ask for help. And more importantly, how to do each of these things the right way. Christie circles back to a book that has made a huge impact on her sales strategy, and her life. The One Thing, by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan. It lays out the power of focusing in on specific areas to reach big goals. And how persistence pays off exponentially. Jeff breaks with tradition, and with a little inspiration from The Copywriter's Handbook, by Robert Bly, shares some of the best branding he's seen from the remarkable Stone Brewing Co. You won't want to miss what's written on these bottles of handcrafted beer! We have a LinkedIn Community where we're posting clips and having discussions about the episodes. Join us! Join Dave and Chris as they discuss games that have been overhyped before release but then fell flat. Also, some games that maybe did live up to the hype that they're not big fans of. They do this while enjoying some Delicious IPA by Stone Brewing Co. Cheers!
[Photo by Matthew Curtis] Few breweries can represent the past, present, and future of American craft beer the way Stone Brewing can. And it’s co-founder, today’s guest, Greg Koch, has been known to speak authoritatively about the entire timeline of craft beer at times. And with good reason—he’s seen and participated in most of it himself. For some, though, his voice can sometimes seem anachronistic. It hearkens back to old, perhaps out-of-date realities of the business that can be jarring against new challenges and priorities for small, independent American brewers—and increasingly those inspired by American brewers overseas. How Stone has navigated the shifting priorities of craft beer has been varied over the years. Sometimes they seem to double down on their initial ethos. Other times, they seem to abandon it altogether. But looks can be deceiving. So this conversation—my first interview with Koch—was an opportunity to hear what some of those decisions have meant to him and Stone over the years. And why they may or may not be in conflict as he and the brand trek back and forth across the ocean in what might hopefully turn out to be a straight line toward some long-term goal. But as can so often happen in this business, it might eventually reveal itself to be a lost-at sea scenario just as easily. It’s almost impossible to tell when the waves are constantly crashing and the winds are constantly shifting and so many people want a hand on that wheel. In this interview, we talk about Stone’s place in the world then and now—growth and layoffs and private equity, breaking off brands like Arrogant Bastard, social media, sabbaticals, and finding the yin and yang with a co-founder. There’s a lot to cover. And I greatly appreciate Greg’s willingness to riff on so many different topics that are important to him, or me, and often both. This is Greg Koch of Stone Brewing. Listen in.
This week, we chatted with Mary Kay Waters, owner of Waters Fine Foods & Catering, which has been in business in San Diego for almost 30 years. Waters describes herself as a food perfectionist with very high standards who refuses to accept anything less than the best. She also has a café that sells “fine foods to go” on Morena Boulevard that you can visit (Troy likes the Coconut Magic Bar). Waters also just released a cookbook, which you can pick up at the café or on their website. Her pick for two people, $50 was DaoFu. In Hot Plates, we’ve got some North County news! My Yard Live is opening in San Marcos in the old Hometown Buffet space, and will have a restaurant, brewery and a patio with a dedicated kids’ play space all under one roof. The place will be huge — over 17,000 square feet — and is opening in June. Stone Brewing Co. is back in the pantry aisle at Whole Foods — they teamed up with Homegrown Meats to create two new beef jerkies that are marinated in Tangerine Express IPA and Arrogant Bastard Ale. One Paseo has officially opened! The mixed-use development project in Carmel Valley has been steadily building buzz over the past year, and curated a mix of local and national eateries: we can expect Michael Mina’s International Smoke, The Butchery, Ways & Means Oyster House, and the first San Diego location for Blue Bottle Coffee to open here. Juniper & Ivy is having its five-year anniversary this month and is celebrating by bringing back some classic dishes from the original menu, like the squid ink linguine and clams, beef cheek dumplings and grape toast. In news elsewhere, we talked about La Plaza Cocina, a museum devoted to Mexican food and culture that is set to open in downtown L.A. this spring. The Mexican food mecca will not only have exhibitions and lectures, but interactive programs and events. Are mail-order meal kits doomed? This is a Hot Topic in the food world right now, and headlines in a variety of news outlets recently asked this question. Companies like Blue Apron were all the rage when the concept first launched in 2012, but it seems the novelty has worn off. If you haven’t signed up yet for San Diego Magazine’s Insiders program, do it now for the chance to dine with food critic Troy Johnson and Claudette Zepeda-Wilkins, chef of El Jardin. Aside from exclusive events like this, our Insiders also get the benefits of a monthly hosted happy hour, free tickets to shows, and ongoing discounts at restaurants and bars around town.

Today we’re talking Metallica, John Resnick, and Jeune et Jolie. In Hot Plates, we’re discussing the new Farmer’s Table in Little Italy, RMD Group’s new project Lumi with Michelin-starred chef Akira Back, Powerhaus Pizza’s debut in Pacific Beach. A collaboration beer between Metallica and Stone Brewing Co., and more. In the guest seat is Resnick, here to chat about his East Coast roots and moving to San Diego to work at The Hard Rock Hotel then The Pearl before transitioning to the restaurant world. Resnick logged years at Craft & Commerce and Ironside Fish & Oyster for CH Projects, but in 2016 he broke out on his own, opening Campfire in Carlsbad. He shares why he picked North County and all the issues that came with building a restaurant in a former auto garage. At his latest concept Jeune et Jolie, he’s highlighting modern French cuisine, a raw bar, and elevated bistro style by Campfire designers Bells + Whistles. Our hot topic is all about the reinstated ban on foie gras, and how restauranteurs like Resnick feel about it. In Two People/$50, we’re recommending Kindred, ChiKo, Dija Mara, and Din Tai Fung.
Join Dave and Chris as they discuss the 2011 film, Drive while enjoying some Tangerine Express IPA by Stone Brewing Co. Cheers!
What horrors abound in this blind gross-out tasting challenge, wherein we try to inflict suffering on each other through liquid terrors? After the inaugural Beer Purge we did last year, Craig’s hungry for sweet and sickening revenge. We pour six of the worst beers we could find while challenging one another to guess what’s in the glass while trying to lessen the volume of our pours from the Cuveé of Doom finalé. Listen in as Craig cackles while committing an unspeakable evil, and Ryan warns that Stephen Malkmus could be coming for your identity and bank account. Don’t listen to this one alone. What’s better than one Buona Forchetta concept in South Park? Two! On today’s show we’re talking about the debut of the Neapolitan pizza pro’s new wine bar, a Cohn Restaurant Group (Coasterra, Island Prime) concept coming to Mission Valley, and the closing of a Vista brewery. In the guest seat, meet Lee Chase, co-owner of Blind Lady Ale House, Tiger! Tiger!, and Balboa Park’s Panama 66, as well as the force behind Automatic Brewing. The San Diego native tells us about his start in home brewing at age 17, what drew him to Stone Brewing Co. as one of its earliest employees, and we revisit our favorite subject, what is going on with the food scene in Balboa Park. Today’s first hot topic focuses on craft beer, specifically how the local industry now pulls in three times the revenue of the Padres. Then we’re asking the question: Will we ever stop eating animal meat? Factory farming counts for one-sixth of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions—but Americans don’t seem to care. We talk about going meatless (for at least one meal per week) and longtime vegan Chase chimes in, too. In Two People/$50, we’re recommending Plant Power, Jaynes Gastropub, and El Jardín. And did you hear? San Diego Magazine has launched its Insiders club, offering exclusive discounts at editor-selected restaurants, bars, spas, and more for just $10 per month. That’s right—it’ll cost you less than happy hour.

CC went to California earlier this year to explore the state were craft beer has exploded over the last decade. During his stay, he went on an ambitious tour visiting several breweries. He met amazing people and tried fantastic beer, and had such a good time that we had to edit the material to two episodes. Guests and breweries in this last episode are: Steve Gonzales from Stone Brewing Co., Jim Crooks from Firestone Walker Barrelworks, Josh Ellis from M Special Brewing Co.
