We've kind of fallen into a love/hate relationship with The Bruery and Brew Dog. They make some really great beers and some not so great beers. The problem is you never know which you'll get anymore. The Bruery's Peaches en Ruegalia is a Black Tuesday variant. They took their flagship stout Black Tuesday and added caramelized peaches, vanilla beans, cinnamon, brown sugar and graham crackers. There's a reason more peach stouts aren't on the market. Overworks is the sour beer label from Brew Dog. They have been putting out interesting sour beers for a few years now. Krampus Nicht promises a sour red beer aged in cognac barrels for half a year and then blended with "winter spices" (cinnamon, cloves, orange zest, star anise). Despite the strong flavor profile, it feels like Krampus pulled a mean joke on us. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #thebruery #brewdog #blacktuesday #sourale #sourbeer #imperialstout #stouts
Last weekend in New Hampshire, amid the revelry of the Schilling Beer Co. Oktoberfest – a festival I'll say should be on your radar for next year – I got together with some brewer owners from around the country to record this conversation. There is a lot of uncertainty in the industry these days and folks are trying to figure out the path forward in real time. Talking with and listening to smart people offers up a lot of perspective. Guests Peter Kiley is Brewmaster and Co-Owner of Monday Night Brewing, and is an award winning brewmaster, winemaker and distiller from Atlanta, Georgia. From Monday Night's inception, Kiley's creative vision, recipe development and multifaceted approach to alcohol production have set the groundwork for the brewery's worldwide notoriety. Kiley is a founding member of the MBAA Georgia chapter, a member of The Hop Quality Group, a published scientific author and has presented at both The World Brewing Congress and The Craft Brewers Conference. Tom Beckmann is the Owner and Head Brewer of Goldfinger Brewing Company in Downers Grove, Il. Upon graduating from the World Brewing Academy Master Brewer's Diploma program through Siebel Institute of Technology and Doemens Akademie in Munich, Germany, Tom became a production brewer at Lagunitas Brewing and later worked several years as a pub brewer at Emmett's Brewing Company. He established Goldfinger Brewing, an exclusively lager beer producer, in the summer of 2020 and has acute experience with lager brewing as well as what it is like to scale up a small, lager-centric, craft brewery. Jeremy Grinkey, co-founder at Everywhere Beer Co has spent 20 years in the alcohol industry. Having spent half of that time making wine on the Central Coast of California and the remainder of that time managing beer production. Before co-founding Everywhere with a few industry colleagues, he was the Director of Production at The Bruery. Everywhere Beer Co was founded in 2022 and is focused on growing its community and delivering fresh beer as well as esoteric offerings to its dedicated fans. Episode 103: The Big Heat, with Ruekeller Helles, provided by Placentia's The Bruery. This is one tight, vicious little picture about a good cop pushed to the edge when gangsters blow up his life. Big thanks to The Bruery for giving me their Helles, a light, full flavored beer that pairs great with this intense, fantastic picture starring Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame and Lee Marvin.
It's a choose your adventure tale! Rob and Drew let ChatGPT determine their fate in two harrowing tales! What will happen when they discover a murder? Who will meet their end in the woods? Rob drink The Bruery's Back to School, Drew drinks Blue Moon.
At least there's beer after Total Nuclear AnnihilationBrian and Nate have disappointed deeply with their lack of excitement for the Fallout TV series. I've played the games for 20ish years and am a huge fan. When the show was announced I was skeptical, like any video game fan when their fav game is "adapted." But they killed it with Fallout. Such an awesome series, and there's plenty of beer. The State of Craft BeerThe Craft Brewers Conference was this week and Brewers Association chief economist gave us the scoop on the current state of craft beer. Overall, it's not great, but it could be worse. One ray of hope, 2023 ended with more net breweries that we had in 2022. So people are still opening, despite all the closures we're seeing. The Top 50 largest craft breweries were also announced. An interesting list for sure.Oh yeah, we did something we haven't done in a long time, had a bottle share! It was great to get the crew together and open some bottles that have been collecting dust. A variety of IPAs, stouts, and sours were enjoyed, and an interesting wine-beer hybrid from the Bruery.BrewDog does not have a green thumbAny time I see BrewDog mentioned I assume the worst. Maybe I shouldn't, but they have been tied up in a lot of scandals. This time it sounds like they tried to do a good thing, and failed. After planting 10s of 1000s of trees to regrow a forest, most of them died. They say the harsh weather the past year did them in, and they're going to go back and try again. Good luck, Dogs. This week market the 508th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot. A lot of jokes are made about these laws, but they had good reason to enact them back in the day. Brewers were putting all kinds of questionable things in their beer, just like folks in America with your steak sauce. Check out the show for the full story. Advanced Cicerone® Scott Fielder whips Certified Cicerones into shape to crush the Advanced exam as the teacher of the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program. As of this interview, the AC Coaching Program is producing its first crop of new ACs from our initial cohort! Scott is also a Packaging Operator at The Bruery in Placentia, CA. On top of all that, he's a Certified BJCP beer judge, has completed the Aroxa Sensory Training Program taught by Dr. Bill Simpson, and with AC Chris Crowe he is one of the two Beer Enthusiasts on their fantastic YouTube channel. Scott is also currently preparing to take the insanely difficult Master Cicerone® exam later this year! It was either Jen Blair or Rachael Hudson who said, on their excellent False Bottomed Girls podcast, that preparing for the Master Cicerone exam is not simply a goal, it's a lifestyle. Scott is living the beer education lifestyle! Scott embodies a welcoming anti-gatekeeping passion for beer education like few others I've encountered in my decade of teaching beer. Besides that, he's my friend and business partner. Not long after he crushed the AC we began trying to figure out how to do a Beer Scholar program for the AC exam and came up with the AC Coaching Program. I've witnessed Scott's intense personal focus on leveling up to the Master level – he brings that same high level of dedication, focus, and care to preparing our Beer Scholar students for the AC exam. The “Meet a Cicerone” podcast is all about sitting down with folks who are “all in on beer.” I don't know many people who fit the bill more than AC Scott Fielder. P.S. If you're interested in joining the Beer Scholar Advanced Cicerone® Coaching Program, reach out to me or Scott right away so we can start getting you ready to join the next cohort! Thanks so much for listening! –Chris
BevPort, a self-described three-tier compliant digital distribution portal, launched in Florida earlier this year. Co-founder Phil Guana joins the Brewbound Podcast to explain how BevPort works, its focus on helping “the little guy” gain market access in the Sunshine State and the partnerships the startup has in the market. Guana also shares future expansion states for BevPort. But first, the Brewbound team reviews the latest news, including a sibling company of Bevana Partners filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the on-premise opportunities with 10,000 tap handles for the taking, increased efficiency at retail and The Bruery's plans for an Idaho outpost. This week's Another Round or Tabbing Out focuses on the future of sour houses following the announcement that Vermont's Hermit Thrush is ceasing operations.

Would you pay $250 for 25 ounces of beer? It's once again time for the semi-annual release of Sam Adams Utopias and with that, the slew of websites touting that it is illegal in 15 states. Technically a beer, but drinks more like a spirit, and hits a hefty 28%. Have you tried it? What did you think?Along with Utopias we recently saw the annual release of Bruery's Black Tuesday and Founders teased the return of their CBS (that's Canadian Breakfast Stout). We talked with Founders Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki about these big beers back in 2019.What's the deal with beer fests?Beer fests are a hot topic these days, too. People are divided on whether they're still cool, if they ever were, or if it's just a huge group of nerds getting drunk. We like beer fests. Well, some beer fests.NA beer and bacterial growth, a bit of pee in your TsingTao, Alcohol and Loose MoralsA recent report says NA beer is a "breeding ground" for bacteria. We get the point they're making, but the headlines make it sounds a bit more scarier than we think it actually is.An employee was caught on camera urinating into some malt at a TsingTao brewery in China. The brewery said they have secured the malt. They didn't say they tossed it, just that they secured it.A study shows "one drink" of just 7 oz of spirits can impact your moral compass and have you dancing nude on stage at concerts BUT your loyalty won't waiver. It's always a great episode when we get to review one of our favorite weird, beer styles. We to review another Lichtenhainer beer. To refresh your memory, image a lightly smoked gose or berliner wiesse. It's a bit of an aquired taste but once you try it, it's one you want try every time you find a brewery brave enough to create one. Belgium brewery Alvinne has Fumo Van Chile, an imperial Lichtenheiner with smoked pepper, salt and coriander seeds. It's a colaboration with Chilean brewers Granizo. After that we get to try a sparkling ale from The Bruery. Spritz This!: Terroir Project is a barrel-aged sparkling ale with Syrah grapes. It's kind of like a sparkling wine. It's an unusual beer as well and makes a great pairing with the Alvinne beer. #beer #drinks #craftbeer #alvinne #thebruery #lichtenheiner #sparklingale #syrahgrapes

Some things sound really good... until they aren't. Like when your kids say they're going to spend all of their money at the candy store and how they're going to eat ice cream every night of the week. Sure that sounds tempting now, but the reality isn't quite as rosy. As you grow older you realize that there are constraints that prevent you from a diet like that- namely the health issues that would arise! We think that something similar is happening to the Financial Independence Retire Early movement. An idea that sounds really compelling when the market is kicking butt doesn't feel the same once a bear market has ravaged those early retirement portfolios. Not to mention that with inflation on the rise, your dollars aren't getting you quite as far as they used to! So we offer a few alternatives to those who are striving after early retirement, how we would recommend that you think about your work and career, and then we highlight why we think the FIRE movement still has its merits.
