27-year-old Natasha Gianitti was working in retail and customer service when she decided to start her own subscription business selling office snack boxes. But then just a few months later, COVID hit and offices closed. Unsure whether to put the business into hibernation or to pivot, she talked to her customers and came up with a unique idea to keep the company moving. She's now on track to make over $1 million in her first year. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today spellbinding singer-songwriter-doctor Sophie Payten aka Gordi joins me to dive into the world of Bon Iver’s 2016 game changer ‘22, A Million’. We dig into how Sophie feels about frequent comparisons between her and Bon Iver, how this album upended what people thought of as Bon Iver’s sound, different interpretations of the album’s opening line ‘It might be over soon’, what it was like for Sophie to work with this album’s co-producer and mixer on her latest record, the unpronounceable track names and how she ended up singing with Bon Iver on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Plus, we chat about Sophie’s new single, a duet with friend of the show Alex Lahey about my favorite dive bar, Dinos in East Nashville.

This ‘team of 5 million’ response to Covid, is reliant on us actually all working as a team, which just has not, or is not happening. We had the gang funeral example yesterday, more than a hundred gathering for a Mongrel Mob tangihanga, Police doing nothing. And of course rightly so that upset all the New Zealanders who have been abiding the rules – the very upsetting and heartbreaking rules a lot of the time, to observe correct protocols for funerals and tangihanga based on level restrictions. So I made the point yesterday that it just undermines what the rest of us are doing when there are no consequences for it.And we’ve seen other examples too, not just funerals.. people gathering for protests in large numbers, people flouting mask rules, those who sneakily fled the Auckland border through the airport to avoid a second lockdown. There have been plenty of examples along the way, and now I see businessman Nick Mowbray from Zuru, is calling out businesses who’re not doing their bit to play ball and be a part of the team. Those who’ve taken the wage subsidy but don’t actually need it.Worse still, those who took it and have announced profits, and have no intention of paying the money back.$13.9 billion has been paid out in wage subsidies to pay struggling staff and keep struggling businesses afloat. We all assumed, and rightly so, that this was for companies truly doing it tough, who would not or could not, survive without it.But Mowbray says, and it’s a fair point which I doubt many could disagree with, if you took the subsidy, and you were profitable and now have a strong balance sheet or are able to pay dividends to shareholders, then don’t you have an obligation now to pay that subsidy back?Should you be profiting from it? Surely not.Surely there’s a moral obligation here?Mowbray says it’s ‘unethical’. And it is unethical that a lot of this money has in fact gone into ‘shareholders pockets’.This is partially the fault of these ‘high trust models’ that this government is so keen on.We saw how high trust didn’t really work with self isolation, we’ve seen how high trust hasn’t really worked with gatherings, tangihanga and funerals, the high trust model seems to go hand in hand with the ‘educational’ approach. It all amounts to the same thing – no consequences.I’m not advocating for some kind of police state by way of alternative, I’m just arguing that there needs to be some checks and balances around fairness, so that those of us who are playing ball within all the rules, those of us who are sacrificing so much, don’t end up getting penalised for it, or ripped off by all of those who aren’t.
I’m a tad worried about the Xenophobes. They’re out in force.Any mention of the ‘b’ word – ‘border’ and out they come. The annoying thing about this is the confusion, the misunderstanding that those coming in and being quarantined are ‘foreigners’. They’re not. They’re Kiwis coming home. There are a handful, less than 2 percent coming in who are not New Zealanders, they’re the people with exemptions, like the Avatar film crew. What is of concern though, are reports that some of these returning Kiwis include people who've gone away post-Covid, for a holiday, and have just factored in quarantine time. If that's the case, they're a drain on the taxpayer and that's the sort of stay we shouldn't be funding. If you decide to take a holiday during Covid, that's on you.But if you've been stuck overseas unable to get back since Covid began, then that's on us.We can't stop Kiwis coming home, we can't close our borders to returning citizens, it's not how the world works.Your home country doesn’t shut up shop on you – ever. Not even in a pandemic. So the reality is, with more airlines up and running, more countries open for business, more Kiwis are able to get on flights and come home. And come home they are – in their droves. The fact we can’t manage our borders or quarantine accommodation in a sustainable way is not their fault. It’s something the government professes to actively be working on, but then they said about the PPE gear too.Time and several ‘reports’ will eventually tell us the truth - but they’re adamant at the moment that they’re getting it under control. And isn't that the other issue at play at the moment – credibility. Our trust in this government’s response to Covid was built around flimsy slogans like ‘Be Kind’ and touchy feely gestures like teddy bears in windows. It underscored the seriousness of it, and it detracted from the hard work that needed to go into getting ourselves properly prepared and ready – for the border, for the quarantine procedures and protocols, for the inevitable return of the disease.. if in fact we ever eradicated it at all. Did we?Or did we just stop testing so much? But the fallout and anger – the subsequent feelings of betrayal by our team of 5 million, has left a bitter taste and when you lose the buy in, you lose the kindness. Anger's replaced it. Disappointment, mistrust, and now even with the border, flashes of racism.“Why are ‘they’ coming here?,” infers a false hierarchy or a superiority.. ‘they’ are your fellow New Zealanders, ‘they’ are entitled to come home. So we can pack up the Xenophobia, and pop it away for good. This is not about the borders and closing our country off to the world, this is about our government working harder to get the fundamentals right, so that those coming home, can do so without unwarranted backlash.
