In the summer of 2024, sports columnist Eamonn Sweeney set out to follow the All-Ireland championships around the country, retracing footsteps he'd first laid down in his 2004 bestseller The Road to Croker. But there was one big problem. For many years, he had struggled with a crippling travel phobia that left him largely confined to his hometown in West Cork. To fulfil his publishing contract, he had to face his deepest fears. The Last Ditch is a story about mental health, hidden shame and a life-changing moment in a remote train station.
Associate Conductor of The Sixteen, Eamonn Dougan has built a reputation as an inspirational communicator with a wide-ranging and adventurous repertoire. In addition to his work with The Sixteen, he is the founding director of Britten Sinfonia Voices and Music Director of the Thomas Tallis Society. The website Bachtrack perhaps sums him up best, praising his “remarkable knack for finding the perfect balance between allowing the emotion time to speak, while keeping everything moving.”In this conversation, Eamonn shares his passion for unearthing overlooked musical treasures, including the rich and rarely heard repertoire of the Polish Baroque. He speaks warmly about his educational work with emerging artists, advocating for ensemble singing as a distinct discipline deserving serious attention. We also discuss the origins and impact of his podcast Choral Chihuahua, created during the pandemic and now in its eighth season, as well as his approach to recording, and the lasting emotional power that music holds in his life.Eamonn Dougan is currently in Australia guest directing The Song Company for Love's Four Seasons, a compelling program exploring the cycle of human relationships through madrigals by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and Barbara Strozzi, alongside modern works. At the time of publication, performances have already taken place in Newcastle, Wollongong and Canberra, with further concerts at the Utzon Room of the Sydney Opera House on Saturday 14 June and at the Blackheath Uniting Church on Sunday 15 June.
This week, we finish up this crazy story, with Eamonn being beaten by local rivals, not in the ring, but in the street, with baseball bats. This causes him to nearly retire, as he wasn't even supposed to be able to walk again, but he beat the odds, earning a new nickname. He also continues his alcoholism, while being arrested several more times, for violent outbursts, often against women. A final tragedy leaves him depressed, and broken, but he keeps pushing on. Will he survive this story?? Have a local lottery winner beat your legs into retirement, be married to, and engaged to, several women at the same time, and try your hardest to not drink, for a week, so you can get a life saving operation with Eamonn "The Terminator" Magee - Part 5!! This week, this wild story continues with Eamonn, fighting for world titles. He trains "Rocky 4 style", with knee deep snow, and wood chopping, but supplements thsi regimen with several drunken nights, per week, and an unhealthy amount of cocaine. He pioneers the category of "step sister porn". He also smokes cigarettes, an hour before a 12 round bout, and decides that gambling & stealing works of art are a good way to pass the time! He's also banned from half the pubs in Belfast!! Have your training be half barbaric, half Studio 54, hang out with a CIS alum to cause havoc in the streets, and make sure your stepfather hears it, while you're having sex with your stepsister with Eamonn "The Terminator" Magee - Part 4!! Eamonn Flanagan is the Lead Strength & Conditioning Consultant at the Sport Ireland Institute, where he oversees strength and conditioning support for Ireland's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. He holds a Ph.D. in Sports Biomechanics and spent over a decade in professional rugby, working with the Scottish Rugby Union, Edinburgh Rugby, and the Irish Rugby Football Union. Eamonn appeared on episode #250 and has just created a new course on plyometrics in conjunction with Sportsmith Training methods such as extensive plyometrics and reactive strength testing have become more common in training team sports. At the same time, it's easy to lose sight of the whole in athlete development when chasing plyometric variables too far. On today's show, Eamonn explores the application of plyometric training, including the impact of surface type on performance, the Reactive Strength Index's role in assessment, and strategies for optimizing reactive strength. We also cover plyometric intensity, using extensive plyometric methods, and tailoring programs to individual needs, concluding with balanced approaches to training and performance.
