Next up on the Pearl Jam 2025 tour is a stop in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is a destination that hasn't been played since this show we're covering in 2003, but that was never originally planned to be the case. On the 2016 tour, a show in Raleigh was cancelled due to the band's opposition to the HB2 law that discriminated against transgender people. It was something that caused a bit of commotion within this fanbase, and we'll get into all of what happened nine years ago, but after the bill was overturned the band felt they needed to make it up to this Raleigh crowd. And if this 2003 show is any indication, they might be in for a good one. 2003 is a favorite tour year for many due to the band truly elevating their game to the next level. Setlists started to become very fan friendly and collector heavy, Mike McCready became the showman that we know of him today, and no two shows were even close to the same. If you like Riot Act heavy shows, this is a good one for you. The deeper cuts such as Help Help, Cropduster and You Are are brought out here and all sound fresh for the same. Save You, I Am Mine and Love Boat Captain are also major highlights from this show, and you can tell which ones are gonna stick around throughout the duration of this North American run. There's also a great run at this show featuring four straight Vitalogy era songs, and we'll get into why these songs together may feel like a mini rock opera. Check out the episode for the full rundown of the setlist, a little talk of what's been going on out on tour and a few stories from the Florida shows and the 2003 Evolution yips! Today I got to speak with Sarah Lariviere about her newest novel RIOT ACT, an alternate history dystopian thriller set in the year 1991. more about the book below: 'In an alternate 1991, the authoritarian US government keeps tabs on everybody and everything. It censors which books can be read, what music can be listened to, and which plays can be performed. When her best friend is killed by the authorities and her theater teacher disappears without a trace, Gigi decides to organize her fellow Champaign High School thespians to put on a production of Henry VI. A Klaus Schwab said in 2020, "Vee haf to prepare for an angry 'vorld". And here we are in 2024, reading the riot ACT. The Machiavellian parasites use the same script and screenplay everytime, whether its banging pots and pans on your doorstep, or throwing half charlies through shop windows the populous fall for it everytime. The Riot Act, The Combination ACT, and now we'll have the new ACT for 2024.The very same people who were marching together in 2020 are now lobbing bricks, and starting fires, the divide and conquer strategies by our supposed governments are working. Rick VenturaFeatured on Riot's seminal hard rock/heavy metal albums, “Fire Down Under” and “Restless Breed,” guitarist Rick Ventura was poised for stardom on the strength of high-profile tours with Rush, Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar and Rainbow. He also had the immense respect of his peers (Hello, Lars Ulrich!). So, what happened? Sharpen your swords and pour some tequila as we dig into Rick's storied past, his new music with Riot Act, the story behind Riot's oft-maligned album covers and the heartfelt humility of leaving his mark. Jason and Paul revisit their latest series called LP2EP whereby they make hard choices and carefully distill each album into an EP. For the second installment their Patrons have chosen Riot Act. The guys also discuss the state of the band as it regards to their health after three concerts were cancelled and address the theory by a segment of the Pearl Jam fanbase that has suggested the shows were cancelled over ticket sales. Lastly Jason and Paul address the disheartening news that touring member Josh Klinghoffer accidentally struck and killed a pedestrian in Los Angeles and what music/touring ramifications that could have on Pearl Jam.Please consider donating to our July 2024 fundraiser benefitting American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. There are countless Pearl Jam shows where all you need to do is mention a location by name and the majority of Pearl Jam fans know exactly what you're talking about. For one lone night at a chocolate factory, when you mention this Hershey show from 2003, everyone knows that it's remembered for one thing - mosquito bites! No, this outdoor venue wasn't invested with mosquitos. The band was greeted by a flasher at this show who had taken her top off in order for the band to recognize her. But what she didn't realize was that they were coming off of one of the longest shows in their history in Mansfield, MA, meaning a six hour drive to Pennsylvania in the same night potentially left Ed a little sleep deprived. It leads to an all-time rant where he comments on the size of her breasts, a quote that has gone down as one of the most memorable things he's ever said. With that being said, the band faced the challenge of following up the experiment by putting together a fun show with a lot of energy. They made up for two songs that were left out of the experiment in Last Exit and Glorified G, dug into some of the deeper Riot Act cuts with Help Help and one of the last versions of Get Right to date, and we get a random appearance of a harmonica on... State Of Love And Trust? Yeah, you read that right. Also, we'll uncover the true story about a friend of Stone's who guested on Rockin In The Free World at this show. Where is he now? The answer may surprise you... really surprise you. Javier makes his return in this episode and will talk about the unique tuning of Daughter, and how that helps transforms the song to make it sound acoustic, even on an electric guitar. We've made it near the end of the first leg of the Dark Matter tour! With the last stop in Seattle happening as this episode airs, we thought it would obviously be appropriate to cover a show that took place in Pearl Jam's hometown. Since we've covered many of the well known Seattle shows in past episodes (check out the archive to listen, lots of good ones!) we're turning to a benefit show from 2001 in which the band didn't go out and tour on. The Groundwork Benefit was put together to help the Food and Agriculture Organization to solve world hunger. This night featured acts like Alanis Morrisette and R.E.M. as the headliners alongside Pearl Jam. It's only a 10-song set, and since it's still in the shadow of Binaural, the album has a heavy presence at this show. No Ten or Vs. songs were played, but we do get an early version of a Riot Act song over a year before the album release. We'll talk about John Lennon song Gimme Some Truth and how Ed initially wanted to play that during the Tribute To Heroes performance after 9/11, but it became a staple of Pearl Jam's touring circuit during the Iraq War. But the song that's going to resonate the most is a rare closing set performance of Long Road. It's a ten minute version that features Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, the nephew of Nusrat who recorded a version of Long Road with Ed for the Dead Man Walking soundtrack. One of the most heartfelt versions of Long Road that you'll ever hear. Along with that, we'll talk about Ed making a guest appearance during R.E.M.'s set to sing People Have The Power and It's The End Of The World As We Know It, and also a little bit of the Athens alternative legends teasing Better Man. Javier joins in for this one, and we'll spend a lot of time talking about our upcoming trip to see the band in Seattle! Just to note, in this episode I may have made some small but rare mistakes regarding facts that I do apologize for. We'll also mention the audio from the YouTube video mixing the guitars really low, but the bootleg that we play in the episode sounds completely normal. A lot of 4am bedtimes in the last month, I'm sure you all understand! The Dark Matter tour keeps trucking along as we now have four shows under our belt and are looking forward to a big weekend in Las Vegas where anything can happen! To get you even more excited for that, this week's episode goes back to the Vegas show during the mighty 2003 Riot Act tour! Coming off of an absolutely legendary performance for their 10th anniversary show in 2000, this crowd came in with a ton of excitement and never let down all night. This show will feature two guests who are vital to the existence of Pearl Jam - Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart. They'll join the band for a fun rendition of Rockin' In The Free World, but before that we'll get into a conversation about why if it wasn't for Nancy, Pearl Jam may not have been able to fund Ten following the death of Andy Wood. It's a story that doesn't get told often and it never got a mention in PJ20, but we'll share how it all went down for you here in the episode. This show should be recognized as a Mike McCready explosion! Mike was on fire the entire night putting on a clinic during such songs as Even Flow, Go, Love Boat Captain, Breath, Crazy Mary, Fuckin' Up and that just scratches the surface. Javier will join us for two segments to gush over the tone of Even Flow and Crazy Mary for this one! Damian, a NYC native currently residing in Germany, is promoting his new YouTube series covering the long history of the legendary NYC hard rock band, Riot: IMMORTAL SOUL: A RIOT TRIBUTE & CONCERT FILM. His 4-part documentary mini-series explores the history and archives of the different eras of the band, spotlighting specific live performances from each era. Now on YouTube is the live music video of Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius' cover of King Crimson's “Frame By Frame.”View it at https://youtu.be/3niTH8OlkFEJoe says, the song always spoke to him with its simple lyrics and dramatic theme. Co-written by Robert Fripp, Bill Bruford, Tony Levin, and Adrian Belew, whose voice, Joe says, “is right in my range and we've been playing this live a lot. I also thought I'd inject it with a lot of staccato violins to give it more of an edge and put my own spin on it.” A studio version will appear on Joe's upcoming album, “Imposter,” slated for late spring 2024 on Melodic Revolution Records.“Frame by Frame” appears on the boxset (2 CDs/DVD/Blu-Ray) “Behind the Curtain (Live at ProgStock)” on Melodic Revolution Records/Amplified Distribution. The box set is three years in the making; the collection is made up of Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius' 2019 and 2021 live performances at the ultimate Northeast progressive rock festival, ProgStock. Joe is the new violinist with legendary rockers Kansas, now on tour celebrating their 50th anniversary. He has played violin for the Who, Bruce Springsteen, 50Cent, Sheryl Crow, and as the concertmaster for Renaissance. The other Stratospheerius bandmembers have a great heritage, as well: Jason Gianni-drums (The Ultimate Queen Celebration, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Rock of Ages, Neal Morse Band), Michelangelo Quirinale-guitar (Thrilldriver), and Paul Ranieri-bass (Mark Wood, Riot Act).
With the 2023 tour in our rearviewmirror, we're pushing forward back as this episode features a great show from Prague at the end of the Lightning Bolt tour run. Seeing as we are now officially finished with the Gigaton run, we thought it would be a good idea to take both of these tour years and see how they compared before embarking on a new era. It's interesting to look at side by side because at the show in Prague, the crowd was treated to many crowd favorite rarities such as Tremor Christ, Brain Of J., Love Boat Captain and Help Help. That's not far off from what we were just treated to! Of course the sets were a little longer in 2018, but we're going to get into why certain things have needed to be adjusted as the band gets older. While people may remember 2018 for the Home/Away shows, the massive show in Rome or even the London make-up show, this Prague show should be right up there when people discuss the best of this year. The crowd was lively on big time favorites such as Corduroy and Do The Evolution, which means they were treated to some well deserved surprises later in the set. Two big highlights of this show include a version of Love Boat Captain that features an incredible jam/improv intro, and a tandem of The Beatles Help! transitioning into Riot Act deep cut Help Help. We'll also have a little Prague history for you that we'll discuss! Thanks go out to Ross Strothers for requesting this episode, you'll get to hear his story told. And the Gear Guru segments this week feature a discussion on Stone's tone during Tremor Christ and other songs, and Mike using a very unique pedal that created a sound in songs like Even Flow and Black that we didn't get to see presented in 2023. We've done extensive coverage of the 2003 Riot Act tour celebrating the 20th anniversary this year. Now it's time to celebrate the anniversary of another major tour in Pearl Jam history - 1998! We kick off a 3-episode Yield tour stretch with an outdoor festival show that took place in Barrie, right outside of Toronto. With Cheap Trick as the supporting act on tour at this time, there are multiple instances where the band gives a subtle nod to their rock heroes, including Mike using Rick Nielson's guitar for State Of Love And Trust. Our Patron Alex Sink joins us for this episode to tell his story of what went down that day. For a bootleg that had a tough time capturing the identity of the show and with no visual aides available, Alex is able to take us back to what that scene was like. A rowdy crowd of over 30,000 created dirt clouds and mud as the mosh pits were in full force on this one. And the band was clearly in a good mood after watching Cheap Trick on the side stage. Ed makes multiple mentions of how great this crowd was, and even addressed some of the craziest fans he had ever seen in the parking lot during an extended version of Leatherman. We also have the world debut of the Do The Evolution music video that happens at this show with the band performing while the images are shown on a screen behind them. If you love Matt Cameron, this may be the episode for you! Get ready for five moments that we've dubbed the 'filthy fills' that will be featured throughout this show! Our Gear Guru segments will featured Javier talking about the lack of overdrive pedal from this tour and how Mike would make adjustments on Even Flow and Yellow Ledbetter, and he'll also discuss Mike's using Rick Nielson's guitar during State Of Love And Trust. As we say goodbye to reliving the 20th anniversary of the Riot Act tour, there are so many other Pearl Jam anniversaries that need to be celebrated this year. Believe it or not, it's been a full decade since the 2013 Lightning Bolt tour, as well as the release of the record. In July of that year, the band revealed their plans for their 10th studio album release nearly days before the two big North American summer shows - Wrigley Field and London, Ontario. We all know how big of a deal that Wrigley show was. It was the first ballpark show of it's kind, heavy storms caused a two and a half hour delay leading to a show that didn't end until 2 am, and Bugs was played. Because of the hype leading up to Wrigley, the London show that preceded it became a bit of an after thought. For those unfamiliar, we'll tackle why this show deserves more love and appreciation from this fanbase that may have forgotten about it in the wake of Wrigley. Like Wrigley, this is a show that was never released as an official bootleg. So most of the stories and moments that are relived come directly from the less than 10,000 fans who were there in attendance in this intimate venue. We're lucky to be joined by two in this episode as Patron, Tim Fortescue, hops on to discuss why he requested this show, and filling in for John this week is Hallucinogenic Recipe co-host, Patrick Boegel, who also has great memories from this. A lot of the discussion here will come from this being the true kickoff to the new era, with a brand new rig, stage and lighting set up, setlist structure and new takes on old songs. It was the beginning of the nightly three song slow burn openers that came off as a massive surprise when the rarely opened with Present Tense kicked off this night. It was also the start of the slowburn encore in a way too, which was the most anticipated part of the set featuring some of the rarest songs in the catalog, IE: Parachutes and Man Of The Hour at this show. We'll also get to talking about the live debut of Mind Your Manners, a London Calling tease, amazing transitions between songs such as Modern Girl into Black, Dundas hookers on crack and experimental takes on two fan favorites - one that worked in Corduroy, and one that didn't in Daughter. As a bonus, we'll also ponder why Canadian hotels only have Garfield cartoons featured on their TVs. Our Gear Guru segments this week focus on the brand new rig set-up for 2013, the defining sound of Mind Your Manners and Alone featuring Mike's usage of a slide pick. It's time to play Pearl Jam Deprogrammed: Championship Edition! In this two part episode, we take six incredibly passionate fans of the band and see how they agree and disagree on their favorite songs. The way we do that is by playing a game called Deprogrammed, a podcast that collaboratively comes up with a starter kit for an artist. In this instance, we will be deciding on the Top 10 songs in Pearl Jam's catalog until we get down to selecting the song chosen as number one with a bullet. Since this is an expanded version of the podcast, we've taken songs from each of Pearl Jam's albums and grouped them together. There are 4 groups, each group contains 42-44 songs. From that selection, every member of the panel will pick their 15 favorites with the ultimate goal of creating a Top 10 in each group. If all 6 agree unanimously on a song, it automatically reaches the top 10 of its group. Anywhere from 5-3 votes will put a song in the conversation to advance to the top 10 and 2 or less votes will prevent a song from entering that conversation. Here are the album groups that we will be debating on: Group 1: Ten, Riot Act, Gigaton, Merkin Ball, 4 Lost Dog disc 1 tracks Group 2: Vs., Binaural, Avocado, Singles Soundtrack, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 3: Vitalogy, Lost Dogs disc 2, Backspacer, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Group 4: No Code, Yield, Lightning Bolt, 4 Lost Dogs disc 1 tracks Stay tuned for the next episode where we'll take the 40 selected in this show and whittle it down to the final ten! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deprogrammedva/message
Ladies and gentlemen of the Pearl Jam universe, it's here! Since the beginning of the year, we've been teasing this 10-episode recap of the 20th anniversary of the 2003 Riot Act tour, featuring the ultimate finale - all three shows from the Mansfield Experiment! To anyone who has never heard of this before, The Experiment was the band's opportunity with three nights scheduled just outside Boston to play nearly every song they knew without repeating anything. This led to three monster sets with the unpredictability of a normal Pearl Jam set heightened to a new extreme. We're gonna focus on the first night's setlist in this episode and spend time talking about how the idea for the experiment all came to be. The challenge of playing 97 different songs in the span of three nights might seem exciting to all of us, but for the band, it was a herculean task that came with some uncertainty. While some of the big setlist staples are tossed into this show like Go, Save You, I Am Mine, Even Flow and Porch, they had to balance all of that out with the lesser played material with songs like Get Right, Help Help, Evacuation and for the time, Smile injected into the set. All three shows have different identities, but all of the excitement from the fans who had heard the rumors gives this show an air of something special that would eventually turn into one of the most legendary runs in the history of Pearl Jam. Thank you to everyone for writing in these past few weeks and sharing your stories. We'll tell a few of them in this episode and spread the rest throughout the following two. Three Gear Guru segments this week will dig into a chaotic ending on Go, the 2003 alternate rendition of In My Tree and the rarely played Evacuation. When you think about some of the more memorable performances in the history of Pearl Jam, a lot of them have a key factor in common. They develop from spontaneous moments that happen within the song. Fan interactions especially can help turn a performance of a song played over 500 times into an unforgettable moment. One of the other spontaneous facets that happens at Bonner Springs in 2003 is how the weather impacts the show. To open this night, the band gets acquainted with the crowd by playing Release under a sky of a torrential downpour of rain. Quickly after the "oh dear dad..." lyric, there is a bolt of lightning in the background in which the crowd audibly reacts to. As Ed is singing one of his autobiographical masterpieces, he looks up to the sky and says "hi dad". It's a moment forever etched into this band's legacy, and we'll talk about it in full detail during the rundown of this show. This show was an easy decision to cover during our continued run of 2003 show, but it was made easier due to the request sent in from our Patron, Chris Bigelow. Check out his story in the episode. After the big moment, we'll go over how the rest of the set fared and talk about a few Riot Act songs we have yet to cover on this run - Get Right and Help Help. There is a big what-if in this set - a written encore setlist of 16 song choices with two songs that could've potentially made their return after almost a decade of not being played. Listen in to find out what those songs were! We'll read your answers for question of the week which asked about some of your favorite concert memories in the rain, and our Gear Guru segment will focus on Mike's pedals from Immortality and how the country twang sound from Off He Goes is created. We're back to our 20th anniversary celebration of Pearl Jam's Riot Act tour! Due to upcoming events in September, we have selected to cover the Dallas show from 2003 to give all of you headed there a little bit of history on what's happened there in the past. This show is mostly known for being the first official time that Alive was used as an opener, and we'll spend a lot of time discussing this version in contrast to the only other time they've opened with it in Newcastle, Australia. Speaking of firsts, there is a tag of an original song that we hear off of Daughter that hasn't happened since this date! On the second leg of this tour, Pearl Jam was starting to get a little creative in their setlists. We all know about the Mansfield Experiment and how the trio of shows featured nearly every song in their catalog. There's also the tour closer in Holmdel which utilized two songs from every album in chronological order. John brings up a theory about this setlist that he thought may have been Ed's original idea for this set, but was obviously aborted somewhere down the line. Do you agree with his theory? The other big conversation here will be about how Blood was being utilized back on this tour. We'll discuss whether it makes any sense to play Blood in the middle of the set and how that factor may have done a little harm to this show. The question of the week this week focuses on the Daughter moment. We'll read your answers on what you'd think would be great songs to use as tags off of it. And our Gear Guru segments this week will focus on 1/2 Full, Green Disease and Jeremy. Continuing on our run of Riot Act shows, this week takes us to the home of the Fighting Illini in Champaign, IL. For this show being on a college campus and therefore not allowing the sale of alcohol, the crowd did an excellent job bringing in the same kind of energy that you'd see from their in-state big city counterpart in Chicago. There are a handful of interesting things from this one. Do The Evolution is opened with for only the 4th time to this point, The Police cover, Driven To Tears, is played for the first time in 404 shows, and the first with a full band, and Ed will break out a ukulele for The Who song Blue Red Grey that Ed admits he stole for Soon Forget. Those two covers are part of this show's major theme which is a total of six covers played on this night. We'll discuss this in full detail and bring to the table how many covers are enough or too much to play in a set. You guys weighed in on that on social media and answered that exact question, so we'll read some of the answers that we got in the episode. Randy will talk a little bit about his upcoming Seattle trip for the last week of the MoPop exhibit and Record Store Day at Easy Street, and Javier's Gear Guru segment will focus on the juxtaposition of tones from Given To Fly and Nothingman played back to back on this night. As is the theme for this year, we're back to celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Riot Act tour for the next few weeks looking into some of Pearl Jam's most notable shows from April of 2003. We're talking about a show from West Palm Beach in this episode, which may not stand out to you on paper, but it features significant moments that define some of the themes for this entire tour year. Three themes are prominent from this era - 1) is of course the political aspect as the country had just gone to war with Iraq and Ed had put President Bush under scrutiny every night. 2) is the aftermath of Roskilde still in ways effecting this band three years later. And 3) is the return of old songs into the setlist that had been missing since the mid-90s. Thanks to our Patron Jared Schaffer for requesting this under the radar show. To hit all three of these topics specifically, one thing we'll discuss is a version of I Am A Patriot that was re-constructed strictly for this era and talk about the political nature involved, as well as Ed's invigorated speech that followed. We'll get deep into the topic of Love Boat Captain, which is featured as our brand new Evolution Series episode that will be out to Patreon very soon, to talk about how the incident at Roskilde helped them create music through the process of grieving. And on the subject of returning songs, this show's Glorified G performance was the first in 188 shows since November of 1996. We know that Ed sang a glorified version of I hate this song, but what band member here didn't seem to take it as seriously as the others on it's return? Other big highlights we'll discuss are Ed singing into a fan's cellphone during State Of Love And Trust, and an excellent call and response section of Daughter that led to a rare tag of Sleater-Kinney's Dig Me Out. We'll also answer this episode's question of the week which asked you all on social media what your favorite moments from the 2003 tour were, and our Gear Guru segments will discuss Stone's gear during this tour year and some of the effects that came from his guitar and Ed's vocals on Daughter. It feels like whenever a band embarks out on a 'world tour', you can't coin that phrase unless you make a pitstop in Japan. While Pearl Jam has never done a true official world tour, they've had the opportunity to visit Japan twice. The first time was in 1995, and then they went back for five shows in 2003. This episode focuses on the Sendai show from the Riot Act tour. These shows are always interesting because the crowd is a lot more reserved than your every day average concert crowd. This factor mixed in with a venue that maxed out at 1,000 seats meant that the band could create more of an experimental setlist, moving songs around in parts of the set that stray from normal scenarios. The best example of this show going through the experimental route happens at the very beginning. It starts with Of The Girl, which seems normal, but the performance in itself sets up for the unconventional trio that follow - Immortality, Insignificance and 1/2 Full. The rest of the show maintains weird spurts of momentum with not many radio hits mixed in the main set. As for the hits go, this isn't the crowd that's going to follow the same kind of cues we're familiar with. We'll concentrate mostly on Better Man and how strange it was without any participation from the crowd. We'll answer our question of the week this week which stems off of the first four songs of the setlist, and our Gear Guru segment features Javier breaking down the juxtaposition between Mike and Stone's solo on the show closer, Porch. This is our first episode of a year long series featuring coverage of some of Pearl Jam's milestone tour anniversary dates, and we're gonna kick it off with the tour that will be dissected the most - the 20-year anniversary of the 2003 Riot Act tour. The pacific rim was their first stop as they visited Australia and Japan, and this episode will cover the third night in Sydney. This was a little bit of a strange time for the band live. The Iraq war was on their minds and they had no problems being outspoken about it. Every show had a hint of it somewhere, whether it be the stage spectacle performance of Bu$hleaguer or even War tagged onto Daughter, it was pretty much guaranteed to be a nightly theme during this time. Another thing that looms heavily over the first leg is the Roskilde tragedy. Riot Act songs such as I Am Mine, Love Boat Captain and Thumbing My Way that were specifically written in the aftermath draw raw, emotional power as the incident was still fresh in their heads. There is a section in this show that will exhibit the pain and sorrow they were working through. We also get Can't Keep as the opener of this show, which led to our question of the week that you answered - what song that's never been opened with before would you like to hear begin a show? Also our Gear Guru segments will discuss Mike's octave pedal and how effective it was on the song Ghost, and the implementation of Boom's presence and Stone's guitar that make performances of Black stand out from this era. Oh, and McCready is a highlight on that too! Visit the Concertpedia - http://liveon4legs Donate to the Show - http://patreon.com/liveon4legs
