Helicopters are such an Auckland issue. I love helicopters. I have flown in a lot of helicopters. Our place is on a flight path north. People who go to the Bay of Islands and to the flash golf courses north of Auckland fly over our place. On a sunny Saturday they start 6.30am-ish in summer. On a still day you hear them coming maybe 30 seconds before you might see them. Because I like them, I have never understood the Waiheke moaners who can't stand them and want them banned on their island. To me a helicopter is full of people going places, i.e. tourists and golfers. These are people we like and want. If you haven't followed the story, Ali Williams, once an All Black, and Anna Mowbray, part of the Zuru clan, are a couple and they have a house in Westmere, which is an inner-city suburb in Auckland. They applied to land their chopper at their place. Cue the horror. Far too much money and time has been spent on this – over 1400 submissions. That's right, 1400. And what was mad about it was a number of submissions submitted that they had no view. You can't make this up. The number of people who are clearly bored out of their minds is unreal. Many a submission against their use of a chopper in suburbia came from people who don't even live in Auckland. Not only were they not close to the landing pad, but they're not even in the same city, i.e. it's got nothing to do with you. Lawyers, council staff, submissions, hearings, and Lord knows how many hours and dollars and, as you will have heard, Williams and Mowbray win. They can land at their place two times a day for no more than 10 times a month. There is nothing, said the Commissioners, untoward, unacceptable, or significantly out of character with helicopter noise, which I think is fair enough. But two questions; 1) How many got exercised out of petty jealousy, i.e. rich folks doing stuff we don't like? 2) How unpopular does it make them? And do they care? Nutty, irrational policy, that is costing a New Zealand toy company billions of dollars a year in trade tariffs. That's how Zuru Toys co-founder Nick Mowbray describes US import taxes and said President Trump needs more adults in the decision making room. Mowbray spoke to Lisa Owen.

Zuru Toys co-founder Nick Mowbray speaks on the impacts of United States tariffs on China. He said businesses were “in a holding pattern” as they grappled with the uncertainty of changeable policy. US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on April 2. Kiwi billionaire Nick Mowbray says “it's hard to say we're not worried” about US President Donald Trump's tariffs and his administration's “chaotic” policy decisions. “We'll ship about $2 billion worth of goods to the US this year. So, at that run rate, that makes our tariffs worth about $3 billion at the moment.” Speaking from Los Angeles this morning (New Zealand time), the toy mogul said it was difficult to read the mood on the ground there. New Zealand businessman Nick Mowbray could not say he wasn't worried about the impact of tariffs. Photo / Alex Burton The co-founder of Zuru Toys told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast it was impossible to plan around the tariffs. He also said it would be “obviously impossible” to shift manufacturing of his products from China to the United States to skirt the 145% tariff rate. His business, along with retailers, were “in a holding pattern”. “It's hard to say we're not worried. Everything seems to change each day. We're in a state of stopping everything at the moment because it's impossible to plan,” said Mowbray. “We're all hoping it doesn't continue for very long, but the [US] administration is definitely very chaotic.” He believed it was possible the tariffs would ultimately be negotiated down. Mowbray said he was in the US, at his office, trying to work through the impact of the tariffs. The US has become Zuru's main export market, supplying the likes of Walmart, Target, Costco and Amazon. An escalating trade war ensued after the US imposed tariffs on China, seeing Beijing put in a retaliatory 125% rate on US imports. Trump announced huge tariffs on different countries on April 2. In a whiplash change of tune a week later, he said all targeted countries but China would face a 10% rate for 90 days. The trade war has created fears of an economic downturn as the dollar drops and investors part with US government bonds, normally considered a safe investment, Agence France-Presse reported. The impact on New Zealand remains uncertain. Kiwibank economists have outlined three possible scenarios for the country: Quick negotiations of tariff deals and little relative economic damage, longer dealmaking and prolonged economic insecurity, and the least likely scenario, recession. Gee, we've gone stadium mad here in Auckland. We already have seven pretty substantial stadiums ranging from 4000-person capacity to 50,000, spread across the city from the North Shore to Mt Eden, Penrose to Manukau, not including other sporting and event spaces. But we can't stop suggesting we build more. While we wait for Auckland's Councilors to ponder feasibility studies done by Eden Park and the proposed new waterfront stadium in Quay Park and announce who will go on to win the title of Auckland's main stadium – another stadium is being pitched, this time for Western Springs. So, Western Springs Speedway has its final event on Saturday night —although we've heard that before— and now Auckland Council is interested in what to do with this valuable inner-city site. This is a really exciting opportunity, especially after years of kafuffle around the speedway. Auckland might not need another entertainment or sporting venue, but they are really nice to have, especially when someone else is coughing up the money for them. So, Auckland has to ask itself: what facilities do we need? What would the inner city benefit from, and can these new facilities be used by as many teams, and individuals as possible. Real estate this valuable needs to be well utilised, year-round. That's why I like the proposal from the team behind Auckland FC. The proposal for their new facility features a 12,500 seated stadium, covered basketball courts and padel courts. It's championed and backed by NBA star Steven Adams, All Blacks rugby legend Ali Williams, Anna Mowbray of ZURU fame, and Billionaire football club owners Bill Foley and Bennett Rosenthal. The group have targeted football, basketball and padel because they are the fastest-growing sports in the world but lack infrastructure in Auckland. They aren't just meeting a community need, it would also be the home of Auckland FC, signalling this team is a long-term commitment. These are all good things. I would observe things have gone pretty well at Go Media Stadium for Auckland FC this season, but maybe not everyone likes traveling to Penrose. Maybe it's felt an inner-city location near hospo hubs will help sustain interest in the team. According to those who have seen the proposal, this sporting facility would be built “at zero cost to the ratepayer”. The only downside is existing occupants Ponsonby Rugby Club would need to move – and they would need to be supported to do this. There are two more proposals. The Ponsonby Rugby Club wants to turn it into a bigger venue, and an entertainment group wants to turn it into a multi-purpose entertainment and community sports venue, but we're yet to hear details for these proposals. In fact, there is a lot of information we're yet see, but fingers crossed this process will move faster than the decision around the Speedway. Der Buddha hat den Weg zur Erleuchtung einfach beschrieben und uns gezeigt, dass das klare Verständnis für das vollständige Erwachen durch die vollständige Entwicklung der sieben Schlüsselfaktoren der Erleuchtung ermöglicht wird. Alle Bemühungen auf diesem Weg zielen darauf ab, einen oder mehrere dieser Faktoren zu entwickeln. Die Faktoren lauten wie folgt: 1. Achtsamkeit: Im gegenwärtigen Moment bewusst und gegenwärtig zu sein, ohne abgelenkt oder beurteilt zu werden. Durch achtsames Wahrnehmen lernst du, die Wirklichkeit in dir und um dich herum besser zu verstehen. In Bezug auf die Lehren Buddhas bezieht sich der zweite Faktor auf eine genaue Auseinandersetzung mit den Grundprinzipien des Buddhismus. Indem du diese Prinzipien erforschst und in deinem Leben anwendest, wirst du ein tieferes Verständnis erlangen. 3. Energie: Um Fortschritte auf dem Weg zur Erleuchtung zu machen, benötigst du Kraft und Entschlossenheit. Du musst dich anstrengen und Hindernisse überwinden, um deine spirituelle Praxis zu vertiefen. 4. Entrückung: Diese Stufe beschreibt den Zustand der inneren Ruhe und Freiheit von weltlichen Verlangen und Ablenkungen. In der Entrückung findest du inneren Frieden und Freiheit. 5. Entspannung: Entspannung bedeutet, den Geist zu beruhigen und sich auf einen Punkt der Konzentration zu fokussieren. Dadurch kann man tiefe Meditation praktizieren und den Geist klären. 6. Konzentration: Eine konzentrierte Aufmerksamkeit auf ein Objekt, sei es der Atem, ein Mantra oder ein anderes Meditationsobjekt, ist entscheidend, um den Geist zu schulen und die Gedanken zur Ruhe zu bringen. 7. Gleichmut: Dieser Faktor bedeutet, dass man in der Lage ist, alle positiven oder negativen Erfahrungen ohne Festhalten oder Zurückweisen zu betrachten. Gleichmut kann dir inneren Frieden und Ausgeglichenheit schenken. Diese sieben Faktoren bilden das Grundgerüst deines spirituellen Weges im Buddhismus. Durch die Entwicklung und Vertiefung dieser Faktoren kannst du nach und nach das klare Sehen erlangen, das zur Erleuchtung führt. Sie sind wie Schritte auf deiner Reise zur Erleuchtung und helfen dir, ein besseres Verständnis von dir selbst und deiner Welt zu erlangen. Diese Aspekte sind nicht nur theoretische Konzepte, sondern auch praktische Werkzeuge auf deinem Weg zum Erwachen. Wenn du sie verinnerlichst und vertiefst, wird es dir dabei helfen, dein eigenes Bewusstsein zu klären und ein tieferes Verständnis von dir selbst und der Welt zu erlangen. Sie sind wie Sterne am Himmel des Erwachens, die dich auf deiner spirituellen Reise führen. Es ist wichtig zu bedenken, dass der Weg zur Erleuchtung für jeden anders sein kann und nicht jeder danach strebt. Mowbray is the co-founder of ZURU Toy Co., ZURU Edge, ZURU Tech, and Rhodes Pet Science. In 2018, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year in his home country, New Zealand, and he's listed in the World Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. He and his siblings, co-founders Mat and Anna, are worth more than $3 billion, while the company revenue was north of $2 billion AUD in 2022. Despite their success, the siblings didn't go into the toy business with a deep knowledge of business or manufacturing. In fact, they didn't even know much about toys.
