Helicopters are such an Auckland issue. I love helicopters. I have flown in a lot of helicopters. Our place is on a flight path north. People who go to the Bay of Islands and to the flash golf courses north of Auckland fly over our place. On a sunny Saturday they start 6.30am-ish in summer. On a still day you hear them coming maybe 30 seconds before you might see them. Because I like them, I have never understood the Waiheke moaners who can't stand them and want them banned on their island. To me a helicopter is full of people going places, i.e. tourists and golfers. These are people we like and want. If you haven't followed the story, Ali Williams, once an All Black, and Anna Mowbray, part of the Zuru clan, are a couple and they have a house in Westmere, which is an inner-city suburb in Auckland. They applied to land their chopper at their place. Cue the horror. Far too much money and time has been spent on this – over 1400 submissions. That's right, 1400. And what was mad about it was a number of submissions submitted that they had no view. You can't make this up. The number of people who are clearly bored out of their minds is unreal. Many a submission against their use of a chopper in suburbia came from people who don't even live in Auckland. Not only were they not close to the landing pad, but they're not even in the same city, i.e. it's got nothing to do with you. Lawyers, council staff, submissions, hearings, and Lord knows how many hours and dollars and, as you will have heard, Williams and Mowbray win. They can land at their place two times a day for no more than 10 times a month. There is nothing, said the Commissioners, untoward, unacceptable, or significantly out of character with helicopter noise, which I think is fair enough. But two questions; 1) How many got exercised out of petty jealousy, i.e. rich folks doing stuff we don't like? 2) How unpopular does it make them? And do they care? Nutty, irrational policy, that is costing a New Zealand toy company billions of dollars a year in trade tariffs. That's how Zuru Toys co-founder Nick Mowbray describes US import taxes and said President Trump needs more adults in the decision making room. Mowbray spoke to Lisa Owen.

Zuru Toys co-founder Nick Mowbray speaks on the impacts of United States tariffs on China. He said businesses were “in a holding pattern” as they grappled with the uncertainty of changeable policy. US President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on April 2. Kiwi billionaire Nick Mowbray says “it's hard to say we're not worried” about US President Donald Trump's tariffs and his administration's “chaotic” policy decisions. “We'll ship about $2 billion worth of goods to the US this year. So, at that run rate, that makes our tariffs worth about $3 billion at the moment.” Speaking from Los Angeles this morning (New Zealand time), the toy mogul said it was difficult to read the mood on the ground there. New Zealand businessman Nick Mowbray could not say he wasn't worried about the impact of tariffs. Photo / Alex Burton The co-founder of Zuru Toys told Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast it was impossible to plan around the tariffs. He also said it would be “obviously impossible” to shift manufacturing of his products from China to the United States to skirt the 145% tariff rate. His business, along with retailers, were “in a holding pattern”. “It's hard to say we're not worried. Everything seems to change each day. We're in a state of stopping everything at the moment because it's impossible to plan,” said Mowbray. “We're all hoping it doesn't continue for very long, but the [US] administration is definitely very chaotic.” He believed it was possible the tariffs would ultimately be negotiated down. Trump announced huge tariffs on different countries on April 2. In a whiplash change of tune a week later, he said all targeted countries but China would face a 10% rate for 90 days. Mowbray said he was in the US, at his office, trying to work through the impact of the tariffs. The US has become Zuru's main export market, supplying the likes of Walmart, Target, Costco and Amazon. An escalating trade war ensued after the US imposed tariffs on China, seeing Beijing put in a retaliatory 125% rate on US imports. Trump announced huge tariffs on different countries on April 2. In a whiplash change of tune a week later, he said all targeted countries but China would face a 10% rate for 90 days. The trade war has created fears of an economic downturn as the dollar drops and investors part with US government bonds, normally considered a safe investment, Agence France-Presse reported. The impact on New Zealand remains uncertain. Kiwibank economists have outlined three possible scenarios for the country: Quick negotiations of tariff deals and little relative economic damage, longer dealmaking and prolonged economic insecurity, and the least likely scenario, recession. Jamf Threat Labs has detected a series of pirated macOS applications that have been modified to communicate to attacker infrastructure. The research states "These applications are being hosted on Chinese pirating websites in order to gain victims." The discovery marks new and advanced malware, similar to the ZuRu malware, first discovered by Objective-See in 2021 within the iTerm2 application. Mowbray is the co-founder of ZURU Toy Co., ZURU Edge, ZURU Tech, and Rhodes Pet Science. In 2018, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year in his home country, New Zealand, and he's listed in the World Entrepreneur Hall of Fame. He and his siblings, co-founders Mat and Anna, are worth more than $3 billion, while the company revenue was north of $2 billion AUD in 2022. Despite their success, the siblings didn't go into the toy business with a deep knowledge of business or manufacturing. In fact, they didn't even know much about toys. They just had one hot air balloon model, a lot of hustle, and a willingness to learn from their mistakes.
