1974 was a landmark year for film, a convergence of exciting international cinema and the original voices of New Hollywood that still resonates 50 years later. In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. Despite the domination of Coppolas, Polanskis and Cassaveteses, 1974 really belonged to Mel Brooks. Nearly 50 at the time, the legendary comedy writer had risen from his Borscht Belt origins to release two classic films in one year, 1974's #1 box office smash Blazing Saddles and trailing all the way back at #4 highest grossing picture Young Frankenstein. While both films became instant perennial favorite parodies of then out-of-style genres, Young Frankenstein is a true love letter to the Universal Monster movies of yore and a masterfully-made horror flick that just happens to have jokes in it. We welcome back Pink Smoke favorite and wig expert Kate Wilkinson to join our chorus of praise for co-writer Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (sorry, Fronk-en-steen), Marty Feldman as Eye-gor, Teri Garr as Inga, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blücher, Madeline Kahn as Elizabeth, Kenneth Mars as Inspector Kemp, recent Oscar-winner Gene Hackman as the Blind Man and true 70's superstar Peter Boyle as The Monster - each performer at the absolute top of of their game. We discuss the film's origins being deeper than the iconic 1931 James Whale movie, whether this is more a triumph for Brooks (who was banned from casting himself) or Wilder (it was his baby) and how it fit into the comedy mindset of the mid-70's. Non-binary neurodivergent counsellor Katie Harrison LPC, based in Misouri is a total ledge! Their unique perpective as all of the above enables Katie to identify neurodvergence in clients the world over. Please note, that identification is not the same as diagnosis! Once identified, Katie helps clients navigate the adult ADHD diagnosis process in their country. Which comes with added difficulties when you are non-cisgendered.It's been said that ADHDers are highly intuitive, Katie argues that the so called ‘intuition' of people who are Assigned Female At Birth; especially those with late diagnosed ADHD is actually due to hyper-vigilance; a trauma response. Gender is a social construct, and in this insightful episode Katie shares a link between the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodivergence that their work has uncovered.Katie was pushed outside of the classroom, which made them feel unacceptable to society. This lead to not being defined by social constructs… existing on the parameters of society. THANK YOU to the AMAZING Katie Harrison LPC for educating us and sharing their late ADHD diagnosis journey! After last week's tear jerker, be prepared to cry again, but this time with laughter! LA based Comedian/Actor Merril Davis, originally from Miami, is one of the funniest people we have had the absolute pleasure to interview! Like us, Merrill basically has a neon flashing ADHDAF sign on her forehead, and is as perplexed as we are as to how they all went unnoticed. Alongside the words that haunt our dreams such as 'could try harder', or 'you're too much'; we discovered Merrill through another one of 'those phrases'... Merril 'means well'. This was the title of her incredible standup show at The Edinburgh Fringe last year, in which she shared her experiences of undiagnosed ADHD in 19 shows to rave reviews. She connected with many late diagnosed ADHDers who felt validated by her humour and unapologetic unmasking. Merrill was labelled 'slow' in convent school, but unstructured college life was when her struggles really surfaced. Back to back job sackings, twice by her own father! Her ADHD symptoms even led to a one night stay in jail. She discovered a therapist who immediately pointed out the obvious in 2016 and was diagnosed with Combined Type ADHD. Merrill is happy to finally have 'the magic potion' to help her manage life better. At times she even feels positive about having ADHD; but then come low moments when she feels heartbroken by the time and friendships lost to ADHD tax. This interview is the perfect episode for Blue Monday week; Merrill made our faces hurt with laughter whilst helping heal our wounds with validation! THANK YOU SO MUCH MERRILL, YOU ABSOLUTE LEGEND! ENJOY! xxIf you've found this podcast helpful & are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. In this episode we explore where Laura is up to on the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster and reflect on a monumental year since her diagnosis; that saw the start of a brand new chapter of her life.At dawn, the day after being diagnosed with ADHD, Laura realised that her lifelong problems were not her fault. It suddenly dawned on her that she no longer needed to hate and chastise herself. This was the dawn of a new era; which saw her start this podcast... with Dawn :) But what was the motivation behind becoming an ADHD activist? Sadly, a tragic chain of events which have impacted how Laura views the world and her place in it. Whilst navigating the grief cycle of late ADHD diagnosis, she has also been dealing with bereavement and devastating news. She questions if perhaps some of the emotional dysregulation and RSD are just sadness due to bereavement. Grief hits different for neurodivergents; and for someone finally aware of their serious time blindness; is it any wonder that she constantly hears the clock ticking? BUT it isn't all gloom and doom! Armed with the answers to her struggles and having responded very well to ADHD medication; Laura has had an INCREDIBLE year! She has overcome the anger that she feared would never shift and is hopeful that ADHD coaching and therapy will improve her life further...meaning that she might actually be able to rest at some point! :)If you are suffering with grief, you are not alone. Happy New Year! New year, new you? Us neither! ;)We are so excited to share this incredible blether with a legendary lady for our first episode of 2023! If you haven't already heard of Single Parent Pessimist Blogger, Claire or listened to her incredible Mind Vox Podcast, you need to remedy that… but not until you've listened to her story here first of course! :)Claire was diagnosed (albeit rather vaguely?!) in 2022, she also identifies strongly with autism. Having blogged for a decade about her experiences as a single parent, the pandemic inspired Claire to create Mind Vox Podcast to raise mental health awareness. Claire's ADHD, paired with her experiences have led to injustice sensitivity coursing through her veins. A self proclaimed chronic pain warrior, we are in absolute awe of this warrior woman! Don't let the name fool you, this pessimist blew us away with her positive reflections on ADHD! As informative as it is inspirational, we are sure you'll love this blether! THANK YOU SO MUCH CLAIRE! Siobhan O'Connor - @notsosecretlysober was diagnosed with ADHD in May of this year, at 32 in Manchester. In this inspirational blether, she shares her battles to overcome the ADHD comorbidities of alchohol and drug abuse; and concludes with her top tips for a Sober Christmas! Historically, Siobhan felt pride in being 'the last person standing' at parties. Though she didn't drink everyday, when she did, her binge drinking was so extreme that she ended up being hospitalised on multiple occasions! Getting blackout drunk exacerbated her ADHD trait of risk taking behaviour. The terrifying situations Siobhan found herself in, in the name of 'fun', were no laughing matter! Prior to four years ago, Siobhan LOVED drinking! It was her whole identity(!) and led her to taking recreational drugs, and in turn into dangerous situations and debt. Reading Russell Brand's Recovery, inspired a year off the sauce... she has never looked back! Siobhan has a BRILLIANTLY names Social Media Management company: @ousaucedmedia - get it! :) Dawn felt so inspired by Siobhan's story, she has decided this will be her first ever sober Christmas... and who knows what 2023 will bring! Don't feel pressured to drink alcohol at Christmas! We are so excited to share this very special bonus blether with a very special person in Laura's life; who has become a very special person to ADHDAF! Introducing the legendary Steph Thompson, creator of All The Discos handmade accessories; including our collaborative ADHDAF X All The Discos Bolt Earrings, Leopard Print Tree Decorations and Disco Party Capes. Laura & Steph were thick as thieves from aged 11, until that wrecking ball of ADHD swung in and destroyed 20 years of friendship! Laura's masking caused serious miscommunication and conflict to devastating consequences. The once best friends didn't speak for over two years! Despite masking to protect herself, hiding who she was and all that she was suffering was the very thing that kept her from safety. Even with the very best of intentions, lying can cause great pain. After finally reuniting and being brave enough to tell the whole horrible truth behind the facade, the foes were friends once more. This is a story of hope for the great many ADHDers who struggle to maintain friendships and often find themselves in conflict. With honest communication and compassion, even the deepest of wounds can be healed. Two women who thought they would never be in the same room together now work together on two businesses, speaking every single day, and are now closer than ever. ADHD AWARENESS CHANGES LIVES! Steph is neurotypical, and believes EVERYONE should listen to this podcast in order to understand the neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1 in 40 adults and to help the fight for systemic change! ALL HAIL THE QUEEN OF KARAOKE AND ALL THE DISCOS! Thank you so much Steph for all of your support and for your incredible creations! Adele, of This Might Help ADHD creates such incredible social media posts that we share so much of her work, it's bordering on plagiarism! :) This Melbourne based writer got diagnosed at the start of the year; here she jumps onboard the late ADHD diagnosis roller coaster with us all the way from down under. Adele shares her content to spark conversation, to raise ADHD Awareness and to be a voice for those that can struggle to articulate the ADHD experience. Her words perfectly encapsulate what it feels like to have ADHD, and she uses @this_might_help_adhd to defend and support ADHDers with her informative and validating posts. This legendary lady literally hits the nail on the head every single time! WE BLOODY LOVE HER!!!Alongside sharing her experiences, Adele talks about the validation that diagnosis brings. Though Adele can appreciate that the process was a lot more straightforward for her in Australia than for many in the UK, (ourselves included) her message is that ADHD Diagnosis at any age is life changing, invaluable and in many cases life saving! Just like us, a late ADHD diagnosis, and discovering how the neurodevelopmental condition can be viewed in society, and the systems around it, hasn't just changed her life... raising ADHD awareness has become her life purpose! As a Mother, Adele carries guilt and concerns about passing on ADHD to her children. She has created her incredible platform to make the world a better place for ADHDers of future generations. We absolutely adore her concept of creating an ADHD statement available on thismighthelpadhd.com: Including firm, confident and clear statements that can help get your point across in the workplace, to the Dr and to ADHD deniers. To arm ADHDers with meaningful ways to calmly defend ADHD when it's spoken about in a hurtful or misinformed way. Seriously, the woman is a LEGEND; THANK YOU SO MUCH ADELE! Thunder bolts and lightning, very very…frustrating! This episode is proof that three women failed by the system uniting really can cause a storm! Alongside being an award-winning Documentary Maker, Creative Director, Author, and Yoga Instructor, Hana Walker- Brown also has the patience of a Saint! This legendary lady persevered with this absolutely chaotic episode in which we battled the elements. A terrible storm caused internet problems, with Dawn getting booted off Zoom multiple times! There are a lot of stops and starts (hence slightly longer length) and a fair few really irritating Discord notification noises - too quiet for Laura to notice with her hearing problems, but loud enough to be picked up on the recording - APOLOGIES! At least it shows that our ‘We are ADHDAF' Community Platform is popping! :DNever has there been such a catastrophic and brilliant interview! As contradictory as the traits of ADHD and Autism; both of which Hana signified in her neurodivergent screening process. Diagnosed with ADHD at 31; she may pursue an Autism assessment in the future once the first diagnosis has sunk in. Like so many of us, Hana is extremely hard on herself. At university, she had such extreme burnout, she was hospitalised! Misdiagnosed and prescribed anxiety and depression meds time and time again. Through raised awareness, she finally recognised her struggles as ADHD symptoms, only to be dismissed by her GP who stated, ‘a lot of women think they have this!' If you are listening lady - SHAME ON YOU! Hana has been waiting two years for NHS ADHD therapy. This episode is rammed full of insight, pearls, camaraderie, compassion and validation. So do follow the wonderful Hana's lead and persevere with this slightly disjointed conversation. It truly is a special one! From at first viewing ADHD as her Superpower to then her kryptonite and now finding self forgiveness. This is one hell of a ride... Enjoy! THANK YOU SO MUCH HANA! We hope to join forces again and cause more storms very soon! If you've found this podcast helpful and you are in a position to do so, please help us continue to help others by joining our Community. Drawing from multiple Scriptures that refer to the mind of Christ, but primarily Philippians 2:5, Kate Wilkinson builds a strong foundation with each stanza. "May the mind of Christ my Savior live in me from day to day; By His love and power controlling all I do and say."

Hey there, my gorgeous listener, welcome to episode 73 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. Thank you for lending me your ears today – I know you have lots of choices, so I sincerely appreciate me being one of them! If you’re a first time listener, super super welcome, I am so pleased to have you here. I am your host Jenn Donovan, and, it’s my job, via this podcast, social media and everywhere else actually, to make your business life simpler. Business can be lonely and hard and complicated and it’s hardly ever easy, but it should be simple or at least simpler, so that’s my commitment you to on the Small Business Made Simple podcast! One way I help to make your life simpler is by having a group of like-minded business owners all in one stop. To ask questions, get answers and enjoy the journey of business! If you haven’t joined the Like Minded Business Owners Facebook Group, then hope over there after this episode and join! Simply search Like Minded Business Owners in Facebook or come to the show notes for the like. Show notes are at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/73 www.facebook.com/groups/LikeMindedBusinessOwners One thing that I love to do inside my business, and in life, if I’m being honest is analyse things! People, things, ideas, thoughts – just love listening, observing and analysing – not in a bad way – but in a “always learning” way. I’m the first to admit, I’m a lifelong learner. Also reading (*ahem listening) to a good book, mostly business related, sometimes not, a podcast or reading articles, blogs etc. So now I’ve set the scene, I wanted to share with you 3 things I learnt from a single LinkedIn post I did other day. I’m sharing this with you because there’s lessons in what I learnt – lessons for me and perhaps for you. Some are “eye-rolling” “yes, I’ve heard that before Jenn” lessons – but I’m going to tell you anyway – because as the saying goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. I know that’s true from experience, from hearing the same thing over and over and over again, but finally hearing it for the first time with “that” mindset – and it being a game changer. So, off track I go …. 3 things I learnt from a single LinkedIn post. Firstly, let me tell you why, this particular post is what I want to tell you about. It was by far my most popular recent post – not the best ever, but the best in Covid-19 with over 3000 views, 50 comments and many likes and reactions. I did it on a whim – not really thinking too much about what I was putting up there – just thought it was a good question to ask and I thought perhaps I might get one or two potential guests from the responses for my podcast! So, the post read “If someone were to interview you, what topic would it be about?” So, what did I learn from that post: People’s favourite subjects is themselves That’s not meant to be a derogatory thing, it’s just a reality. Ask people what they do, and they will tell you. Ask people what they are best at, and they will tell you. Lesson: If you’re short on engagement or content, think about how you can ask a question to engage people by asking someone about them – again, everyone’s favourite subject is themselves. Some don’t know the answer. Some people who commented did not know what they could be interviewed about. This is a professional platform, LinkedIn, and therefore about business doing business with business. Some people didn’t know what their elevator pitch was. An elevator pitch is being able to tell someone what you do, why you do it and who you do it for, in the time taken to ride an elevator. Very scientific timeline! It’s totally fine that people don’t know their elevator pitch – I so get that – and I’m not looking at it from that perspective – I looking at it from a content perspective – perhaps I need to put out some content to help people articulate what their interview topic/elevator pitch is. See marketing hat on – there’s content right there for me in the future – listening to what the market is telling me. But if you couldn’t answer that question – or you have 100 different answers to that question – what would your topic be – then perhaps your USP or unique selling proposition is something you need to do some work on. Episode 4 – yep that long ago – we all about knowing and owning your expertise – it’s worth a listen and there’s a great little unique selling proposition exercise in that podcast too! Link is in the show notes or go to: www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/4 LinkedIn is still my favourite (and best) platform If you’re following along my journey, you’ll know that I am putting in a big effort into Pinterest this year – it’s the platform I am conquering in 2020 – well not me exactly, I am paying the super wonderful Kate Wilkinson to do it for me. I have also been trying hard to turn up more often in Instagram stories and feed. It’s a battle – it’s just not my favourite platform – but I am powering through! Instagram is definitely building and giving me leads. But I put this same post up on Instagram stories and didn’t get the same result. Yes, there’s lots of factors that would contribute to that, but the fact that my posts do better on LinkedIn, consistently, and the result of this post reinforcing that, clearly, my people are hanging out on LinkedIn. So although I won’t stop putting my energy into any other platform, that would be silly, they are serving different purposes and goals within my business, but this post just reinforced what’s best for my business, when it comes to the goal of building network connections, building expertise and having social serve it’s purpose inside my business. Oh and a little side note, of the 50 odd who commented, about 60% were already connections – so that gave me the opportunity to start a conversation with people who didn’t know me or weren’t connected to me prior to this post – that’s a win for me – new connections – new conversations. So, my questions to you after my 3 little discoveries: Do you know your elevator pitch? Do you know what you would love to be interviewed about? Of all the people who do what you do, why should someone choose you – choose to spend their money with you – that’s the big question at the end of the day. What social media platform is best for your business? Do your social media platforms help you reach the goals you set for them? Do you have goals around your social presence? If not, why not? Short sharp ep today! But hopefully still some gold in there for you – there was certainly some for me when I took time to analyse that post – something I thought was worth sharing with you. So, that’s all for episode 73, I’ll be back next Thursday with another great episode to help you simplify your business in 2020. If you’re enjoying this podcast, which if you have listened to here – you hopefully are, don’t forget to subscribe, share this episode with another superstar business owner who’s doing the daily grind and would appreciate someone making their business simpler, and leave a rating or review to show how much you are loving this free weekly content. Massive love coming your way if you do! See you next week on the podcast for episode 74. But in the meantime, let’s hang out on social and get social on social – you’ll find me on Instagram, Facebook and my fav LinkedIn. But whatever you do, ……..remember small business peeps, as my opening song says, there’s no point in dreaming small!

Kate Wilkinson is the pastor of youth & young adults at Heritage Alliance Church. Kate grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, studied in Geneva, Switzerland and now resides in Abbotsford, BC, with her husband and their daughter. Today at Chapel, Kate offers a perspective of discipline that is uncommon in most media. In short, God desires to finish the work which he started in each of us: this life-long journey of perfection requires intimate discipline of both our character and our habits. This kind of discipline challenges, but does not destroy. God's discipline makes us whole, rather than tearing us down.

" Adene and Kate join host Steve Boland to talk about capacity building (and defining external capacity in movements), the responsibility of philanthropy in our changed times, defining a process of change rather than a specific outcome, and much more! The conversation also mentions another Open/Impact report, The Giving Code, which was the topic of a previous Next in Nonprofits podcast interview.
The podcast lets Jason off the hook in this episode by focusing on the movies and TV that aren't just shot in Toronto, but actually use the city as their setting. Steffan Browning, Green Party Member of Parliament. Spokesperson on:Organics, GMOs, Fisheries, Agriculture, Bio-security, Customs, Forestry, Security and Intelligence. Steffan has been a member of the select committee on the Food Bill and has been instrumental in promoting changes to the original document.A new law, replacing the Food Act 1981, was passed in Parliament on May 27th 2014. The bill introduces substantial reforms to the regulatory regime for the safety and suitability of food. This bill has been ten years in the making and has been sent to the select committee twice. It has just passed its third reading in the house and is to become law. This bill is about food that is for consumption. It sets a new risk based bureaucratic structure that growers and producers will have to face but as consumers that may be a plus for us. Food Safety Minister Nikki Kaye says it will reduce compliance costs. There will be exemptions for small growers. How much bureaucracy should a small grower have to comply with however?Laws governing the selling of seeds for growing have been changed and are no longer included in the bill. The bill is strictly about the safety of food that we are going to eat.Steffan Browning and Labour’s Damien O’Connor have both put up amendments to the bill on Country of Origin labelling but the government voted these down. The Green Party has still got Country of Origin labelling in the parliamentary ballot, as that now seems the only way to get the issue addressed. In January 2012, when Steffan was supposed to be on holiday, many people flooded him with letters concerned about this bill. One concern was, where did genetic engineering fit in all of this. After all, it is a food safety issue, since genetically engineered foods are not safe. If you doubt that statement is correct watch the movie that Steffan recommends,http://vimeo.com/68422959 'Genetic Roulette’. One concern was that genetic engineering had been removed from the draft bill. Steffan worked with the then food safety minister Kate Wilkinson, and more recently with minister Nikki Kaye and has managed to include wording says that genetically engineered foods MAY be considered a food issue. This means that GE can be included under the umbrella of this food safety regulation, which would ultimately be beneficial, one would hope. The words are in the bill but the actions of this government are not supporting it.Minister Nikki Kaye has allowed into New Zealand a new Soyabean that has been genetically altered to make it tolerant to the herbicides glufosinate ammonium and 2,4-D (an ingredient in agent orange) as well as roundup. This will undoubtedly create a health issue in the not so distant future. While each of the herbicides are not shown by industry’s own science to cause problems in the human body, there have been no tests on how all three work together. Independent science has shown some very concerning effects from herbicide resistant GE soy. This latest soy has not been approved by the FDA in the United States yet, which is saying something! Currently in New Zealand no GE food is grown but Steffan talks about the importing of GE food into this country and how we are unknowingly eating it, as our labelling laws have not been monitored or enforced since 2003. He explains why you are probably eating GE in your dairy and meat products via the animals’ food, that may include GE soy, cotton seed and canola. One of the concerns in this country is the lack of independent, not industry based, science. It appears that even our regulatory body FSANZ has some conflicts of interest amongst its advisors, so how do we ensure we actually are eating safe food?Steffan says the whole system needs an overhaul. If FSANZ – Food Safety Australia New Zealand – can’t do better than this then we need to bring control back into this country, again.Steffan is a tireless worker for a variety of food issues and is a major protector in Parliament of the integrity of our food. He is also quick to acknowledge the work of Claire Bleakley, Jon Carapiet, Suzie Lees, and others from http://www.gefree.org.nz GE Free NZ.This programme was sponsored by The Awareness Party.http://www.theawarenessparty.com
