The Entrepreneurial Podcast - Celebrating Entrepreneurial Success
Karl LaPan, President & CEO of The Northeast Indiana Innovation Center is no stranger to the world of company building. As the first president and CEO of the NIIC, Karl has been able to shape the organization with his core values surrounding entrepreneurship, helping it grow into one of the top entrepreneurial resource centers in the country. The center is built with advising at its heart; from unique business building resources, the Women's Entrepreneurial Opportunity Center (WEOC), the connected health lab, and programs that reach deep into the community. I recently sat down with Karl at the entrepreneurial table. The great thing about chatting with Karl is you can cover a wide range of topics – and we did. From his thoughts on global entrepreneurship trends, to his latest book Guard Rails, his perspectives on advising and coaching entrepreneurs and of course, his deep passion for creating inclusive communities. Sprinkled throughout our conversation are dozens of tips, insights and advice for those of us who support and inspire entrepreneurs.
Tammy Allen, the Marketing Director of The NIIC, talks about the obstacles that go along with crowdfunding campaigns and how to manage a crowdfunding campaign successfully.
Porter comes to the Pilots with nearly 30 years of collegiate coaching experience with stops at West Texas A&M, Aurora (Ill.), Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), North Central (Ill.), and most recently at Wheaton (Ill.) In 16 years as a head coach, Porter has amassed 312 wins and won seven regular season conference titles and has made five postseason national tournament appearances. In his two years at Aurora, he led his teams to 36 wins and two NIIC conference championships and made an appearance in the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen in 1995. He established AU records for most wins in a season (22), most points scored in a season (2,137), and most points scored in a single game (111). He was named the NIIC Coach of the Year each season. As the head man at Olivet Nazarene for 14 seasons, Porter led the Tigers to five CCAC regular season titles and three CCAC tournament championships. He set ONU records for consecutive home court wins (29) and went undefeated in CCAC play at 17-0 in 2012. His up-tempo offense led the NAIA in scoring seven times in a span of eight seasons and he was named the CCAC Coach of the Year five times. He was inducted into the Olivet Nazarene Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. In all, Porter has coached 35 All-Conference players, six Conference MVPs, and 38 Academic All-Americans. His teams hold 16 national statistical records, leading the nation in scoring 11 times and setting college basketball's single season records at any level in both steals (735) and scoring average (104.1). doug.porter@betheluniversity.edu https://www.roundball.net/ dporter837@gmail.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support
In this episode of Power Station, Josh Hoyt explains that the way you make democracy work is by organizing the people who are left out. This is the proposition that guides his leadership of the National Partnership for New Americans, a multi-ethnic and multi-racial organization comprised of the nation’s largest immigrant-serving coalitions, 37 nonprofits in 31 states. These immigrant led organizations serve both traditional hubs of immigration, such as California and New York, and emerging communities in Minnesota, Alabama, Idaho and Nebraska. Those they serve, Latinos, Asians, and Africans, have been marginalized by a lack of public resources, corrosive rhetoric and the politics of fear. But they are powerful organizations that, through the collective power the NPNA, are shaping the immigrant integration sector. Their collective voices are heard through the National Immigrant Integration Conference (NIIC), a dynamic and singular gathering of those who serve their communities every day and advocate for policy reforms at the city, state and federal levels. A hallmark of the NIIC is the New American Dreams Platform, whose planks includes Full Citizenship For All and America As A Refuge. As Josh says, an organizer listens and brings people together. In this case, coming together is changing the face of America and the composition of Congress.

This week the guys talk about the work of writer/director Nora Ephron. Ephron first came into the limelight for writing the screenplays for films such as SILKWOOD and WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, before jumping into the director's chair. She is known for directing romantic comedies like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL and MICHAEL, and pairing up Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in two films. Nora only directed 8 films before her untimely death, but they were films that brought a lot of joy to the world. The films under discussion are SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, MICHAEL, YOU'VE GOT MAIL AND BEWITCHED. There you go! Now you know! In this very swallowy episode (Roo apologizes...for some reason his mouth was very watery this episode) we hear a wide variety of music from some great furry artists including newcomers Palm Village and DJ Limination, and returning alum PartyWolf17, NIIC and ODIN's Disciple. Oh...and Roo plays one of his old band's tracks...randomly in the episode... Also, you get to hear Roo go FULL TIME MACHINE at one point. See if you can catch it...he seems to think he's in high school again o.O Fuzzy Notes is a podcast featuring the music made by members of the furry fandom, with chatter and rambles from it's host Potoroo (or Roo for short!) It started in 2012 and has featured over a hundred artists and nearly three hundred songs. Currently, Fuzzy Notes is being moved to a new home where you will be able to hear the entire series from Episode One. Please keep an eye and ear out for the big move in early 2015. She was just nominated for two Juno Awards: 'Country Album of the Year' and 'Breakthrough Artist of the Year' Brillohead - Bamboo Shoots **Not very well recorded, but compare this song to 'Duct Tape' played earlier in the episode. Roo included 'Duct Tape' as an example of why you should hold off releasing a song right after you record it, especially early in your songwriting/recording life. Some of your early work may sound awesome at the time, but sound rough when compared to your later songs. 'Bamboo Shoots' is EXACTLY the same band - Roo and his high school band Brillohead. This song was written and recorded about two years later. Unlike 'Duct Tape,' 'Bamboo Shoots' is a song being played by a tight band, the chords progression and instrumentation is far more complicated, and if you ignore the fact that Roo wrecked his voice recording the vocals are fare more interesting. Yet, in that last moment where you hear the whole band screaming out the names of canned food, the same silly-goofy nature from 'Duct Tape' carried through even as the band improved. ...I guess what I'm saying is, love your early stuff and learn from it, but give yourself the chance to decide what you share with the world and what you keep to yourself. And if you want to share something with the world you don't have to do it right away: once you have that finished product in your hands you now have all the power in the world to decide how to share it, when to share it. If I didn't play 'Duct Tape' on this show, it quite literally would have only sat as an MP3 on two people's computers (unless the other person had deleted it). I chose to release it here, now, about 22 years later. But if 'then was now' I might have put it up on my Bandcamp two years ago when I first wrote it, and now when I'm releasing my 'Bamboo Shoots' songs it would be out in the world. ...damn, 'Bloggy Show Notes'! --- HOUSEKEEPING: FIND ROO TO GIVE HIM MUSIC! * Twitter: http://twitter.com/Potoroo * Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/FuzzyNotes * Fuzzy Notes Dropbox: http://soundcloud.com/fuzzy-notes/dropbox HEY!
