In the 1990s, filmmakers and audiences seemed obsessed with “magic men” who caused chaos in their communities while teaching everyone an important lesson. Some of these men were angels; some of them were just weird little freaks who made a big difference. Some examples of this: POWDER, MEET JOE BLACK, PHENOMENON, and another John Travolta starring film called MICHAEL. MICHAEL is an interesting hybrid magic man/religious film where this “magic man” archetype is also the archangel Michael from the Bible. This device allows the film to be safe-religious while not directly invoking Jesus, a storytelling technique also used by popular Y2K-era television show TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. In the film, Michael is an angel discovered living in Iowa by tabloid reporters who specialize on documenting unexplained phenomena. When they travel to meet Michael, they find out he is indeed a real angel, but not in the way that most of us would expect to experience one. He is sweet, but with bad manners, and prone to seducing earth women because he's very interested in sex with them. Michael also introduces new rules of angel encounters on earth: for instance, angels are only allowed to visit earth 26 times and they can only perform small miracles. Inventing fake angel tropes outside of the Bible is a very common device of these safe religious 90s films, usually used to tie up plot continuity issues. In the end, Michael's secret mission is to unite the characters Frank (played by William Hurt) and Dorothy (played by Andie MacDowell) in a romantic love they will treasure forever. Although it's a sweet but ultimately quite stupid film that uses half-baked angel powers as a cop out, MICHAEL is an extremely interesting study in trends of biblical imagery in mainstream pop culture of the recent past. When it comes to supporters of the show, Tony Farina is the OG. And when it comes to stitch ups, the same could be said! Back when Chris and Dave were still finding their way with Comics In Motion, Tony found the podcast and suggested both Speed Racer and Tank Girl. And at the time, Chris believed these were the worst movies he'd ever seen. Fast forward to 2025, Tony has chosen a favourite of his. The much maligned, Hudson Hawk.Hudson Hawk was an infamously chaotic and overblown affair, marked by creative clashes, ballooning costs, and a shifting tone that left even the filmmakers unsure of what they were making. Conceived as a pet project for Bruce Willis, who co-wrote the story, the film was meant to be a stylish, fast-paced heist comedy with a quirky sense of humor. However, as production went on, the film became a strange hybrid of slapstick, action, and self-aware absurdity. Director Michael Lehmann, best known for Heathers, struggled to balance the various tones, while Willis—at the peak of his Hollywood power—reportedly had significant influence over creative decisions, leading to constant rewrites and improvisation on set.Adding to the mayhem, Hudson Hawk had a bloated budget of around $65 million, due in part to its globe-trotting locations, elaborate stunts, and extensive reshoots. The film was primarily shot in Italy, making use of grand European backdrops for its bizarre plot about an art heist intertwined with Leonardo da Vinci's inventions. Despite its high production values and an ensemble cast including Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell, and Richard E. Grant, the film flopped spectacularly at the box office and was widely panned by critics. Over time, however, Hudson Hawk has developed a cult following, appreciated for its sheer audacity, oddball humor, and the sheer spectacle of witnessing Hollywood excess at its most baffling. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where stealing priceless artefacts is just another day at the office, legendary cat burglar Hudson Hawk is fresh out of prison and ready to go straight, until he's blackmailed into pulling off the heist of a lifetime. With his loyal partner Tommy Five-Tone by his side, Hawk must dodge ruthless criminals, corrupt CIA agents, and a deranged billionaire couple who want him to steal Leonardo da Vinci's secret alchemy machine. From the rooftops of Rome to high-speed chases and over-the-top action, Hudson Hawk sings, cracks wise, and fights for his life in a high-stakes adventure where the only thing more dangerous than the mission... is surviving it.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
Petra van Bremen is one of the most beautiful and elegant women I've ever met. We were introduced at the Venice Film Festival, and sat next to one other during the gala dinner honoring Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon. That's where I got to know her, and I've been a fan ever since. Petra was born a beauty and has been modeling since she was a young girl in Europe. Last year, she was featured in Vogue, and it seems the older she gets, the more work she gets, too. It's no longer taboo to tell your age or let your hair go gray or white. Look at Andie MacDowell or Maye Musk. They're fashion icons, owning this time in life and feeling more empowered than ever, inspiring the rest of us to do the same. And that's what Petra is doing, too. Working the clothes from top fashion designers, showing the world that there's beauty in aging. And we talk about that, about her book on beauty, which is currently published only in German, and how we can all feel empowered at any age or size. We just have to believe there's no rules but our own. Please find my full interview with Petra on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE and please invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to have you join us.

Send us a textKatie and Bridget deal with six more weeks of winter as they re-watch the movie: Groundhog Day! That's right! There's apparently no apostrophe "s" when you say that title! We're confused by it too! Come along as we meet Phil, a cranky weatherman who gets stuck in a literal hell hole of reliving the same day over and over again, where he remembers its repeating but nobody else does. It sounds like it should be a horror movie (which it kind of is), but also it's really deep and moving and philosophical and funny and, and, and... Listen there's a lot of days happening here so ya kinda get all the emotions okay!? This movie brings fourth lots of deep questions such as: How long do groundhogs live for? Why is the groundhog put into air jail instead of actually getting to potentially see his shadow? WHERE is the groundhog's paternity leave!? ...Alright fine maybe this movie just really brought fourth a lot of questions about GROUNDHOGS! Released in 1993 (the best year for movies), it was written and directed by Harold Ramis and stars Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, as well as every character actor ever.

Send us a textKatie and Bridget give each other a swirly as they re-watch the 80's classic that helped to solidify the "Brat Pack": St. Elmo's Fire! It's a movie about how all those terrible people you went to college with continue to be terrible, even after college! Come along as we meet the weirdest friend group ever. First we've got Jules, a woman who may or may not have killed her step mother, that has a nervous breakdown and lies to all her friends for no reason. Next there's Kirby, a terrifying stalker who needs to be arrested, but instead gets to kiss the woman he stalks and then just walks away like nothing happened! Huh!? Then there's Kevin, an emotastic guy who steals quotes from prostitutes, complains about never getting laid, and then writes an article about The Meaning of Life that none of us get to read because it's probably trash. Speaking of trash - Here's Alec, a cheating boyfriend who went from Democrat to Republican (BARF) who's originally dating Leslie, an aloof girlfriend who should have just proposed to be in a throuple already because what the hell are we doing guys!? And last, but certainly not least... We have Billy, a sax playing maniac who needs an STD test STAT and Wendy, a girl who may wear Spanx but what she really needs to wear is some glasses, because wtf did she ever see in Billy!? Released in 1985, the movie stars Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, and Andie MacDowell.

Chosen by our random year generator, 1959 was a doozy for world and civil news, making a mistaken identity spy thriller the perfect film to highlight. We discuss a true touchstone of our childhood Halloweens: The Simpsons' inaugural Treehouse of Horror episode from 1990, then we preview Samantha's Spooktober pick: the 2019 horror/comedy Ready or Not! Stay spooky, friends. Stay Spooky. I Love This You Should Too is hosted by Samantha & Indy Randhawa "Treehouse of Horror" is the third episode of the second season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on Fox in the United States on October 25, 1990. The episode was inspired by 1950s horror comics, and begins with a disclaimer that it may be too scary for children. It is the first Treehouse of Horror episode. These episodes do not obey the show's rule of realism and are not treated as canon. The plot revolves around three scary stories told by the Simpson children in the family's treehouse. The first segment involves a haunted house that is based on various haunted house films, primarily The Amityville Horror (1979) and Poltergeist (1982). In the second segment, Kang and Kodos are introduced when the Simpsons are abducted by aliens. The third segment is an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem "The Raven". James Earl Jones guest starred in all three segments. The episode was received positively, being included in several critics' "best of" lists. Critics singled out The Raven for praise, although Simpsons creator Matt Groening was concerned that it would be seen as pretentious. It stars Samara Weaving, Adam Brody, Mark O'Brien, Elyse Levesque, Nicky Guadagni, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell. Join Alex and returning guest host Dr. Jordan Wagge as they wax poetic and deep on one of Bill Murray's best, Groundhog Day (1993). Written and directed by comedy ace Harold Ramis and also starring Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, and Stephen Tobolowsky, this movie has become timeless with the question: what would you do with a day that repeats over and over? The concepts explored in the episode feature heavily in behaviorist and learning principles, as well as a discussion of research methods and hypothesis testing. Of course Phil needs to learn how to be a better human, and what better way to learn than testing his hypotheses about death, skills, and love? There's surely no better way than to repeat the same day over and over! "Groundhog Day," released in 1993 and directed by Harold Ramis, is more than just a comedy; it's a timeless exploration of human nature, personal growth, and the possibility of redemption. At the heart of this film is Bill Murray's iconic portrayal of Phil Connors, a cynical and egotistical weatherman who finds himself inexplicably trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day repeatedly. This seemingly simple premise blossoms into a rich narrative that balances humour with profound philosophical questions, making "Groundhog Day" a film that resonates on multiple levels and remains relevant more than three decades after its release.CinematographyThe cinematography by John Bailey is subtle yet effective, capturing the small-town charm of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, while enhancing the film's repetitive structure. The film cleverly uses visual cues to signify the passage of the same day, such as the recurring shot of the alarm clock flipping to 6:00 AM, accompanied by Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe." This repetitive visual motif reinforces the loop and creates a sense of claustrophobia and familiarity, making Phil's frustration palpable to the audience. Tight framing and repetitive angles help to convey Phil's initial sense of entrapment, while the gradual introduction of more dynamic shots mirrors his evolving perspective on his predicament.StorytellingAt its core, "Groundhog Day" is a masterclass in storytelling. The script, co-written by Ramis and Danny Rubin, expertly balances the comedic and the existential. The film begins with a focus on Phil's narcissism and the comedic potential of his situation. His initial attempts to exploit the time loop for personal gain provide some of the film's most humorous moments, from binge-eating and reckless driving to seducing women. However, as the days continue to repeat, the narrative shifts to a deeper exploration of Phil's character. One of the most compelling aspects of "Groundhog Day" is its structure. The repetitive nature of the plot allows for a unique form of character development. Phil's journey from cynicism to enlightenment is not a straightforward path but a series of trials and errors, successes and failures. This cyclical progression mirrors real-life growth, where change occurs incrementally and through repeated effort. The film's pacing is meticulously crafted, ensuring the repetitive sequences remain engaging and progressively reveal more about Phil's inner transformation.Character DevelopmentBill Murray's performance as Phil Connors is nothing short of brilliant. He brings a nuanced blend of sarcasm, vulnerability, and, eventually, sincerity to the role. Initially, Phil is the epitome of a self-centred jerk, treating those around him with disdain and seeing Punxsutawney as a backwater trap. However, as the loop forces him to confront his own flaws and the impact of his actions on others, we witness a profound change. Murray's portrayal of this transformation is both believable and moving. His comedic timing is impeccable, but his ability to convey the subtler moments of despair and introspection truly anchors the film.Supporting Murray is Andie MacDowell as Rita, Phil's producer and the object of his initially superficial affections. MacDowell's performance adds a layer of warmth and earnestness to the film. Rita serves as a moral compass for Phil, embodying the virtues of kindness, patience, and genuine human connection that he initially lacks. As the bumbling cameraman Larry, Chris Elliott provides additional comic relief while also serving as a foil to Phil's arrogance.Historical and Cultural Significance"Groundhog Day" has achieved a rare status in popular culture, becoming a reference point for discussions about time loops and repetitive experiences. The film's impact extends beyond its comedic roots, influencing various genres and spawning countless homages and parodies. Its humour and existential inquiry blend has resonated with audiences and critics alike, cementing its place as a modern classic. The film also taps into universal themes of self-improvement and the search for meaning. Phil's journey is emblematic of the human condition—the struggle to overcome one's flaws, find purpose, and connect authentically with others. This timeless message ensures that "Groundhog Day" remains relevant across different generations and cultures.Relevance to Pop Culture"Groundhog Day" has left an indelible mark on pop culture, becoming a shorthand for any situation involving repetition or feeling stuck in a rut. Its influence can be seen in various films, TV shows, and even video games that explore similar themes of time loops and self-improvement. The concept of reliving the same day has been adapted in diverse genres, from the horror-thriller "Happy Death Day" to the action-packed "Edge of Tomorrow."The film's enduring popularity is also reflected in its continued relevance in discussions on personal growth and resilience. In a world where many people feel trapped by routines and unfulfilled aspirations, "Groundhog Day" offers hope and transformation. Phil's eventual realisation that he can change his circumstances by changing himself is a powerful reminder of the potential for personal redemption and the importance of empathy and kindness. In conclusion, "Groundhog Day" is a film that transcends its comedic premise to offer a profound exploration of human nature and the possibility of change. Its clever cinematography, masterful storytelling, and stellar performances combine to create an entertaining and thought-provoking narrative. As Phil Connors discovers the value of selflessness and genuine human connection, the audience is invited to reflect on their lives and how they can break free from their metaphorical time loops. For these reasons, "Groundhog Day" remains a beloved and culturally significant film that continues to inspire and entertain audiences worldwide.

A couple years back I had Ian and Eshom Nelms on the show to talk about their new Christmas classic, Fatman. We had a great talk, so I was thrilled when their people reached out to see if I'd like to discuss their new flick, a sort of southern revenge thriller/neo-noir by the name of Red Right Hand. We discussed getting Orlando Bloom and Andie MacDowell to play somewhat against type, how drone usage helps expand the scale and scope without blowing up the budget on a picture like this, and the unpredictable vibe of Jonathan Easley's script that attracted them to the project in the first place. You can watch Red Right Hand on Apple, Amazon, YouTube, and wherever else you might watch a video on demand. It's worth the price of admission just to watch Andie MacDowell play a vicious southern queenpin; trust me, you've never seen her quite like this before. If you enjoyed our chat, I hope you'll check it out. And please share this episode with a friend!
Sadie Laflamme-Snow shot out the gate and into Hollywood in a big way. Just a couple of years after graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada, Laflamme-Snow scored a lead role in a Hallmark series opposite two industry heavyweights, Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh. Since premiering in January 2023, The Way Home has amassed an adoring fanbase that spans generations, and is credited with opening many minds to Hallmark content. Laflamme-Snow plays Alice, a teenager whose parents are on the cusp of divorce. Even though her mother, Kat (Leigh), is estranged from her mother, Del (MacDowell), they move back into her childhood home together, a house in a small farm town called Port Haven. While exploring the property, Alice makes a game-changing discovery. By jumping into a pond in the woods, Alice can time travel. But, Alice isn't in control of where (when) she goes. That's up to the pond, and it opts to send her back to 1999, the year that drastically changed Kat and Del's lives and their connection to one another. While celebrating The Way Home's Season 2 run on Hallmark Channel, Laflamme-Snow took the time to join me for a Collider Ladies Night Pre-Party conversation to recap how she scored such a wonderful opportunity so soon after graduation, to dig into Alice's evolution on the show thus far, and to tease some challenges the character could face in the second half of Season 2. Shat The Movies takes its anglophilia to a new level with an English commissioner, an English guest host and a movie that epitomizes the English film renaissance: "Four Weddings and a Funeral." Rob Will Taylor joins Ash and Gene to discuss the reality of British weddings, why they start so early and why they suck for guests. The Shat Crew also explores the tragic tale of Charlotte Coleman, the charm of Hugh Grant and Ash's favorite sex scene ever. In this episode, Gene assumes Dick Ebert's mantle of Curious Average American Guy, asking about British phone habits, whether viewers are supposed to hate Andie MacDowell and how sleeping at pubs works. Ash applauds a powerful scene that still packs a punch. And Rob rails against That Fucking Song.
