Along the way, Syd attracts the attention of The Founders Society, a group of people with murky intentions who trace their lineage back to colonial times.

There’s a term in psychology that also applies to marketing. It’s called “The Halo Effect.” It refers to how we can make sometimes incorrect assumptions based on a collection of pieces of information. For a business case study let’s take a look at a lighting company that was founded in the UK in 2015, called Tala. Tala designs and sells lighting fixtures that are elegant, environmentally friendly, focused on sustainability - they’re able to be repaired, and if they have to be discarded they’re recyclable – and they’ve been featured in Architectural Digest. The company has an international reach, is widely admired, and is financially successful. The Halo Effect would have us believe their lighting fixtures must be exclusive and expensive, and the company must have its eye firmly on profit. Well, the truth is somewhat different. Tala is what’s called a B-Corp – it’s a registration given to companies that focus on using business as a force for good, striving for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable economic practices. And Tala’s lighting fixtures are inexpensive – you can find them online at Wayfair. And, to complete the expect-the-unexpected list of circumstances at Tala, the Chairman of the Board of this innovative and progressive company is New Orleanian, Anthony Robins. We can make incorrect Halo Effect type generalizations about other businesses too. For example, when we hear “Wedding Reception Venue” we typically picture a high-school-gym kind of vibe, with a stage for a band or DJ. When we hear “Hotel,” we expect it to be something between a Holiday Inn and the Ritz Carlton – the only difference being the amenities and the cost. A local company called Workshop WDXL (pronounced in speech, "W.D 40") is challenging all of these assumptions. The W.D. part of the name is the initials of the team’s principals, Jessica Walker and David Demsey, and XL is forty is in Roman numerals. Some of the Halo-Effect-busting, non-traditional, New Orleans businesses Workshop WD 40 have created are, the wedding venue, Felicity Church, and the hotels and villas, The Syd and The Mitzie. All of these projects have won prestigious architecture and design awards. When we talk about the environmental impact of human activities, we’re generally talking about burning fossil fuel, the use of plastics, pollution from factories and farms, and even the use of AC systems and aerosols. The one thing that does not seem to show up on these lists is lighting. And yet, every single home on Earth that has electricity has multiple light fixtures and lightbulbs. And we know that inefficient bulbs burn more fossil fuels, light pollution reshapes ecosystems, and discarded light fixtures add to the world’s growing mountain of e-waste. One of the core values of Tala is to address these issues - and to package the solutions as elegant, attractive, and affordable light fixtures. Most architects dream about designing cool, quirky, inventive buildings. Most commercial property developers are focused on budgets – bringing projects in on time and as cheaply as possible. Most real estate developers are looking for bells and whistles that will pitch a property as high up the price range as a market will bear. These three goals are often at odds with each other but Workshop WDXL, is juggling all 3 of these balls. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. They're using a lot more 12 personnel and splitbacks this year as well so it's not just your standard Lincoln Riley spread. It's still Lincoln Riley though, and it's been murder on a mostly bad offense. A big reason is the All-American slot/flanker Makai Lemon. There aren't as many outside guys as last year but they kept their two favorites; Ja'Kobi Lane is back and huge, but freshman Tanook Hines is getting most of the snaps at the other side. You do have to be wary of tight end Lake McRee and JUCO RB Waymond Jordan. OL might be better than they were against Illinois, when they had some significant injuries; we expect LT Elijah Paige to be back but not center Killian O'Connor, so they'll have to play 7th year senior J'Onre Reed. 2. USC Preview: Defense starts at 19:15 Not the offense. D'Anton Lynn is on the Ravens tree but he's not having the same success, mostly because they can't seem to get the defensive line up to size. Devan Thompkins is 290, Jide Abasiri is 295. Edges were highly ranked (Anthony Lucas was a pre-Elston Michigan target) but sophomore Kameryn Crawford isn't panning out like a top-100 is supposed to. They added Portal #25 Keeshawn Silver from Kentucky and a 5-star freshman, but they haven't changed that math, and are getting pushed around. We do still like Kamari Ramsey, who came with Lynn from UCLA and has been playing nickel this year. Cornerbacks are tall. 3. Wisconsin After Review starts at 36:56 Underwood is coming along, the RBs are elite, and Andrew Marsh is happening. Still have McCulley the #1 with a bullet, and it's nice to see they're giving him leapy chances now. Not sure where PFF (and Sam apparently) are getting the bad pass protection grades for the tackles, because we thought they were fine. The young OL have mistakes but they fix them, and they all have the talent. Fire blitzes were the order of the day. Weird seeing this defense spill but that's what they do sometimes I guess. Rod Moore's return was a bigger deal than you think. Seth's not as mad at Wink as you think.  4. Around the Big Ten starts at 52:45 There are some pretty big games this weekend (and that's more interesting than hockey vs Mercyhurst) so we previewed each of them. Indiana at Oregon: "…is a top-ten matchup" means Okay grandpa let's get you back to a home. Oregon by 7. If IU's OL is legit they can win and if they can beat Oregon there's no ceiling on this team. I can't believe in Indiana! Ohio State at Illinois: They'll lean. UCLA at Michigan State: What's funnier: MSU losing at home to UCLA or UCLA immediately losing by like 60 after beating Penn State? MSU fans are already saying Jonathan Smith doesn't have That Dawg in him. He seems like a normal human being, not an angry little dwarf. Nebraska at Maryland: Interesting game with what happened with Maryland last week. They are throwing many screens. Rutgers at Washington: Expect a high-scoring game. Would like this game on the opposite coast but Rutgers's offense is hit or miss and three time zones suggests miss. Northwestern at Penn State: PSU fans are already salty after the Eagles and Gavin McKenna/PSU hockey just lost to Clarkston. If you have one punt there could be a riot; OTOH Penn State fans respect Northwestern's big win over a tough UCLA team. Iowa at Wisconsin: euugh. Special teams malfeasance by Wisconsin will ruin them. Purdue at Minnesota: Vaguely watchable? She made an impact with her debut EP "The Yellow Album," at the age of 16, followed by her album "Timeline" at 19. It's a birthday celebration on the podcast this week, and Syd joins B~Love to get real about everything from birthday etiquette to work travel drama. They kick things off with Birthday + Relationship Vibes, diving into the contentious topic of birthday beef. Is forgetting your spouse's birthday ever forgivable? They also tackle the age-old "Birthday Wars," questioning why women's birthdays often feel like a national holiday while men's are a simple text and a Cash App. The conversation continues with the ultimate "Birthday Test": If your partner planned it all, would they actually get it right? They also debate the merits of surprise parties and whether they're a thoughtful gesture or a low-key selfish act. And for those who celebrate a "birthday month," they ask the hard-hitting question: Are you really celebrating or just holding the house hostage for 30 days?

It's hard to imagine being in Pink Floyd in 1975. 1973's Dark Side of the Moon had not only achieved high praise from the critics but had sold better than most any album ever recorded. Nick Mason, Rick Wright, Roger Waters and David Gilmour had soared to extraordinary heights thanks to their balance of technological experimentation, their examination of modern capitalistic life and Waters' biting lyrics. They had plenty of money and adoring fans. The only worry was what to do next. For months they noodled around Abbey Road Studios (EMI Studio at the time) trying to find new inspiration; apparently while they drank each other under the table. Engineers and producers were sacked in an attempt to capture their greatness and harness all the capabilities of the latest available technology. Out of that came Wish You Were Here - an album that may not receive the praise (or sales) of Dark Side or The Wall but is perhaps their most listenable effort of the 1970s and a favorite among Gilmour and Wright. The very progressive and Floydian suite Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5 start the album by creating an atmosphere of awe and wonder. Waters lyrics describe their former bandmate Syd Barrett; their former leader who had lost a battle with his own schizophrenia which led to the boys not encountering him for 7 years. However, in an odd twist of fate Syd made it to EMI during the mixing of the album with a shaved head, shaved eyebrows and weighing more than double than when they'd last seen him. It all adds to the mystery and legacy of Syd and Pink Floyd. Before the 6-9 suite of Crazy Diamond, we are treated to some wonderful Pink Floyd classics. Welcome to the Machine offers mechanical noises and dismal lyrics to not only warn of but welcome the new entries into the military industrial complex. The acoustic Wish You Were Here is a sweet yet remorseful song about lost friendship and the unfortunate changes that come with growing up and growing old. Have A Cigar is a very cheeky view of the music business but as neither Waters or Gilmour could quite pull off the right tone, they employed old friend Roy Harper to provide the vocals. All three are classic rock staples and songs the band would perform together and as solo artists throughout their careers. Often overlooked compared to the other Floyd output of the 1970s, we find this has aged well, is still very listenable and is as poignant as ever 50 years later.
