On paper, the set-up for this movie seems fairly conventional: a mild-mannered small-town diner owner named Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) is living an idyllic life in the Indiana countryside with his wife Edie (Maria Bello) and two children when suddenly one night just before closing....two thugs enter his diner and start threatening everyone, start to get violent...and Tom channels the hero inside him to dispatch them and save everyone, then becoming a local hero known all around which starts to attract some attention from the wrong people who go after him and his family. It almost sounds inspiring....or quirky....or maybe the setup for your typical Liam Neeson action vehicle post-2010. :/ But of course, it's ALL about the execution and thanks to director David Cronenberg (The Fly, Eastern Promises, Naked Lunch) adapting this story from a hyperviolent graphic novel, it's anything BUT conventional.  Also co-starring Ed Harris and William Hurt who received an Oscar nominaion for his performance, this is a tense psychological thriller about one man, his violent nature, and how it affects those around him.  WARNING: GRAPHIC VIOLENCE PORTRAYED VIA MOVIE CLIPSHost & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This week, the boys get trippy with the 1980 psychedelic sci-fi transformation drama “Altered States”, a film so divisive that writer Paddy Chayefsky put his three Oscars in a closet and penned his adaptation of his own novel under a pseudonym. The Ken Russell-directed film introduced the film world to William Hurt and let Bob Balaban keep his beard, and it also unleashed Bigfoot on major metropolises. This is the story of two cellmates in a Brazillian prison who form a unique bond despite coming form very different backgrounds - one is a political prisoner played by the late, great Raul Julia (The Addams Family, Presumed Innocent) and the other is a homosexual window dresser played by the late, great William Hurt (Broadcast News, Body Heat) in the role which won him his only Oscar.  Their story takes several unexpected turns as a poltiical thriller, prison drama, and even a tale of fantasy.  The titular Spider Woman (Sonia Braga) appears within the fantasy portion and what results is a very emotional tale of survival and compassion which ended up receving four Oscar nominations including for Best Picture that year.  It's helmed by Hector Babenco (Ironweed, At Play In the Fields of the Lord) who also received an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

In the 1990s, filmmakers and audiences seemed obsessed with “magic men” who caused chaos in their communities while teaching everyone an important lesson. Some of these men were angels; some of them were just weird little freaks who made a big difference. Some examples of this: POWDER, MEET JOE BLACK, PHENOMENON, and another John Travolta starring film called MICHAEL. MICHAEL is an interesting hybrid magic man/religious film where this “magic man” archetype is also the archangel Michael from the Bible. This device allows the film to be safe-religious while not directly invoking Jesus, a storytelling technique also used by popular Y2K-era television show TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL. In the film, Michael is an angel discovered living in Iowa by tabloid reporters who specialize on documenting unexplained phenomena. When they travel to meet Michael, they find out he is indeed a real angel, but not in the way that most of us would expect to experience one. He is sweet, but with bad manners, and prone to seducing earth women because he's very interested in sex with them. Michael also introduces new rules of angel encounters on earth: for instance, angels are only allowed to visit earth 26 times and they can only perform small miracles. Inventing fake angel tropes outside of the Bible is a very common device of these safe religious 90s films, usually used to tie up plot continuity issues. In the end, Michael's secret mission is to unite the characters Frank (played by William Hurt) and Dorothy (played by Andie MacDowell) in a romantic love they will treasure forever. Although it's a sweet but ultimately quite stupid film that uses half-baked angel powers as a cop out, MICHAEL is an extremely interesting study in trends of biblical imagery in mainstream pop culture of the recent past. Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator. We discuss Winger's stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There's also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette's documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. The motivation of the piece was partly motivated by Winger's exodus from the business for over half a decade in the mid-1990s. There's also conversation about Shirley MacLaine's 1984 Oscars speech, Tom Berenger being deeply proud of Betrayed and his performance in the film, and all those NBA players that appear in Forget Paris. Janet Maslin and Roger Ebert's superb reviews of Betrayed are mentioned, as is Debra's perfect laugh. Finally, we touch on when Raquel Welch sued MGM and won for being fired from Cannery Row (Winger replaced her in the role), Winger's dropping out of A League of Their Own after Madonna was cast (bonus Patti LuPone on Evita clip here!), Melanie Griffith and William Hurt being director Bernardo Bertolucci's first choices for the leads in The Sheltering Sky, and Debra Winger's infamous Watch What Happens Live episode.

In this episode of Comic Stripped, Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich take a deep dive into A History of Violence, comparing the 1997 graphic novel written by John Wagner (Judge Dredd) and illustrated by Vince Locke (Deadworld), with the 2005 film adaptation directed by David Cronenberg. Originally published by Paradox Press, an imprint of DC Comics, the graphic novel is a gritty, pulp-inspired crime thriller following Tom McKenna, a small-town diner owner whose violent past resurfaces after he thwarts a robbery and is outed as a former mob hitman. Wagner and Locke craft a tense, noir narrative grounded in bloody realism and identity crisis. The film adaptation stars Viggo Mortensen as Tom Stall, with Maria Bello, Ed Harris, and William Hurt rounding out a powerhouse cast. Screenwriter Josh Olson reworks the core premise, shifting the story's focus from pulpy crime fiction to psychological drama. Cronenberg transforms Wagner's narrative into a meditation on suppressed violence and the duality of human nature, anchored by Mortensen's haunting performance. The panel discusses how Cronenberg stripped down the original's mob-heavy plotting to explore more intimate moral dilemmas — particularly the effect of Tom's hidden past on his family and his sense of self.Evan and Mark also examine how both versions tackle themes of redemption, guilt, and identity, as well as the differing narrative choices — from Locke's visceral, sketchy art style to Cronenberg's cold, calculated visuals. They consider the cultural contexts of both releases, the adaptation's critical acclaim (including Academy Award nominations for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for William Hurt), and whether either version offers a more definitive take on the cost of violence. Tune in for an in-depth comic-to-screen breakdown with sharp analysis, biting humor, and a respect for storytelling craft across mediums.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Master '80's auteur Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Silverado, Body Heat) kicked off the '90's with this dark comedy based upon the bizarre true story of a philandering husband whose wife conspired to murder him....and yet he wouldn't die. :o The husband is Joey played by Oscar-Winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda, Dave), the wife is Rosalie played by Emmy-Winner Tracey Ullman (Tracey Takes On) and the cast just gets more interesting from there including Oscar-nominee Joan Plowright as Rosalie's mother, Oscar-nominated River Phoenix as Rosalie's friend, PLUS Oscar-Winner William Hurt and Keanu Reeves playing two drug-using cousins.  And believe it or not....each of these characters are involved in this murder plot....AND they're ALL funny no less?? :) This film was pretty much forgotten almost as soon as it was released back in the Spring of 1990, let's find out if it should have been. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Captain America: Brave New World carries on the distressing trend of underachieving and subpar MCU movies. Worse, like much of Phase 4 and 5, there still seems to be no clear direction for what is coming next or why. Brave New World is not a terrible film, but it is one that is clearly stitched together. Plagued by behind-the-scenes drama and frequent reshoots, the whole is clearly made from disparate parts. Thus, despite game efforts from Anthony Mackie as the titular Captain and Harrison Ford, replacing William Hurt, as Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, it can never overcome its issues. That said, there is fun to be had. The height of which never should have been spoiled in the film's trailers. We present our Captain America - Brave New World Review!Captain America: Brave New World is a 2025 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Sam Wilson / Captain America. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the fourth installment in the Captain America film series, a continuation of the television miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), and the 35th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Julius Onah from a screenplay by Rob Edwards and the writing teams of Malcolm Spellman & Dalan Musson and Onah & Peter Glanz. It stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Captain America alongside Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Xosha Roquemore, Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson, and Harrison Ford. In the film, Wilson investigates a conspiracy involving President Thaddeus Ross (Ford).Captain America: Civil War (2016) ended the Captain America trilogy starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and Wilson becomes the new Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Series writers Spellman and Musson were writing a new Captain America film by April 2021. Mackie signed on in August, Onah joined in July 2022, and the title Captain America: New World Order was announced later that month. Additional cast members joined later in 2022. Nelson and Tyler returned from the second MCU film, The Incredible Hulk (2008), while Ford replaced William Hurt as Ross following Hurt's death in March 2022; Ross becomes the superpowered Red Hulk in the film. Captain America: Brave New World is a 2025 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Sam Wilson / Captain America. Filming took place from March to June 2023 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional filming in Washington, D.C. The subtitle was changed to Brave New World during filming. There's a new Captain America in town and he's facing a brand new Hulk, but does that mean CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD earns it's title? Anthony Mackie returns as Sam Wilson to carry the shield in place of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, and he faces Harrison Ford who replaces William Hurt as General Thunderbolt Ross, but where does this movie fit in the larger Marvel landscape? Are there any mid or post-credit teases? And does this connect to THUNDERBOLTS* in any way? DJ and Roxy answer all those questions and more! Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1998 visionary cyberpunk film DARK CITY – directed by Alex Proyas; written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, and David Goyer; starring Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, & William Hurt.A man struggles with memories of his past, which include a wife he cannot remember and a nightmarish world no one else ever seems to wake up from.Dark City was a film that cemented Alex Proyas, a music video director, as a talent to watch in the late-90s and beyond. His debut film, The Crow, became an instant cult classic and his follow-up film Dark City was deeply impressive. In ways, Dark City was like a spiritual sister film to The Matrix – both films shared similar themes, both used some of the same sets, and both expounded upon the late-millennia craze of simulacra and simulation which were based upon the haunting principles that the world around you might not be real. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.

The frantic holiday season is upon us, but we are breaking from our seasonality trend for this special episode to celebrate our favorite soon-to-be college graduate. Broadcast News has long been a favorite film of ours, and it's a great feeling when a film can be handed down to the next generation and they love it as much as we do. Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Albert Brooks, Joan Cusack present a believable and engaging ensemble (supported by a deft cameo performance by Jack Nicholson). Written and directed by James L. Brooks, the film won critical praise and 7 Oscar noms, and was designated for preservation by United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, as well as making several of AFIs top lists since it's 1987 release. As our Information Age moves into uncharted territory with multiple social media platforms, streaming services, and the increased use of AI for media production, we think it's a film well worth revisiting, if only to remind ourselves (and hopefully our listeners) of the standards that constitute ethical, well sourced, and reliable journalism. “Vincit Omnia Veritas”

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode.
