Claiming Citizenship: Race, Religion, and Political Mobilization Among New Americans (Oxford UP, 2025) looks at Indian Americans, currently the second-largest group of immigrants in the United States, and a group that has seen significant representation in the three most recent presidential administrations. Prema Kurien asks how Indian Americans have become a rising political force given that they have not followed the traditional, recommended model of political influence. She examines the dialectical process through which immigrants conform to the structures and cultures of the society to which they have immigrated, but also work to transform their adopted homelands to accommodate their unique needs. William Scott Sommerhof (we called him Scott) BRANCH AND PLATOON: Marines: First Battalion 8th (Battalion Landing Team) DATES OF SERVICE: August 1980 - October 1983 (KIA) AWARDS AND MEDALS: Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, United Nations Medal Scott wanted to be a Marine all his life. He looked up to his relatives who had served in the armed forces, including our uncle Earl Sommerhof, a Green Beret who was killed in Vietnam. Scott's parents were not crazy about him joining the Marines, but they understood how much it meant to him and supported him fully. Scott entered the Marines in 1980 and attained the rank of First Lieutenant, which was his rank when he was killed on October 23, 1983 when a Hezbollah-backed suicide bomber attacked our base in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 Marines. Scott's parents had gotten a letter from him 2 days before the bombing, in which he said he was looking forward to seeing them at Christmas. Scott believed in the mission and never wavered in his patriotism and pride to be a Marine. Tragically, Scott's 21-year-old brother, Eric, was killed in a motorcycle accident during Scott's deployment, in 1982. I interviewed Scott's other brother John and his mother Jo on the show I did at NewsTalk in 2023, Stories of New Americans, on the anniversary of the attack. I also interviewed Johnny Harper on that episode, who survived the attack and has worked to keep the memory of his brothers alive. Tim and Chris also interviewed him both in 2023 and 2024. Are you like me, struggling with the overwhelming urge to punch something about 25 times a day right now, for sure every time you read a news headline?!!? Time to put your foot down. Literally!Today I'm catching up with Serena Ryan of Summits in Solidarity, to learn about the latest iteration of the grassroots hiking initiative she co-founded that continues to break down barriers to outdoor access by raising critical funds for BIPOC-led organizations. The 2024 Summits in Solidarity Hike-a-Thon launched March 20th with an ambitious goal: collectively hiking 5,000 miles between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice to raise $50,000 for two remarkable organizations: MANA (Maine Association for New Americans), that supports immigrants in connecting with nature and community resources; and Unlikely Riders, that creates welcoming mountain sport spaces for BIPOC Vermonters in skiing, snowboarding, and beyond. My 2025 hike-a-thon is underway, and I hope you'll pop in @GuidesGoneWild on Instagram or Facebook to follow my progress this spring! There will be no talk of FKTs or thru hikes or 24 hour traverses, and I might not even go to the White Mountains, because I honestly don't have time for that right now! Instead, I'm going to be getting ALL of my 75 pledged miles on my local trail systems - a few of the hikes I intend to do are less than a mile long! Whether you support my hiking efforts, do your own thing solo or with a team, or donate to win some swank raffle items, it's all good! Why is American bread like that? Why did we swoon of "Old Fashioned Bread" during the pandemic?  What happened so that our bread is these nice neat rectangular loaves with close textured middles and soft crust perfect for sandwiches - while so much of the rest of bread world is more interesting? The answers - surprisingly enought lie in the start of the 19th century when the New Americans got itchy feet and started to head Out West.  Not that it's surprising - but such activities were not conducive to cultivating yeast and baking the slow rise, freeform breads of the community bake oven.  That took time, and skill and babued yeast.Instead, on the move, in a hurry, and going it alone, the quick bread, the Johhny cake, the pancake and the biscuit were all more practical (if not basically the same darn thing.)This isn't the entire reason American Bread is like "that", but it's about half of it.  Come along, and hear the roots of some  American habits and lore.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot com Threads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood
