This week, we're spending time with Melvin James Kaminsky, better known to the universe as comedy icon and director Mel Brooks! After lampooning westerns, monster movies, and world history, Brooks turned his signature sense of humor to the cinematic sci-fi outings of Star Wars, Alien, 2001, and Planet of the Apes. With an all-star cast including Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, the film was born from a gentleman's agreement between Brooks and Star Wars creator George Lucas. In return for certain concessions (rule number one: no merchandising) from Brooks, Lucas agreed to handle some of the more technical aspects of the film through his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic. The result was a cult hit, almost as beloved as the properties it parodies. With a long-promised sequel finally on the way in 2027 (colon The New One, not colon The Search for More Money), we're visiting a galaxy very, very, very, very far away to see if the Schwartz is still with Spaceballs! We hope you don't get lost on the highway to this episode because we're taking a detour into the obtuse, dreamlike world of 90s cinema with David Lynch's 1997 head-scratcher, Lost Highway. As the fourth entry in our Liminal Spaces season, we're trying to figure out if we're on a road to nowhere or just stuck in a psychogenic fugue state. To help us navigate this noir nightmare. We've bought back Jamie from the Final Transmission podcast! You might remember Jamie from his debut in our Season 4 episode about The Blair Witch Project, and he's returned to help us solve a movie that even the director refuses to explain. We tackle the ethereal dualities of Patricia Arquette, wonder why Bill Pullman is so committed to strobe jazz sax solos, and witness the final, heartbreaking performance of Richard Pryor. We also dive into the horror of the Mystery Man played by Robert Blake, discuss the 90s movies trend of circular plagiarism, and finally address why Balthazar Getty has been a rising star since the Filofax era. Plus, Dan reveals his theory that the script was written by Barry Gibb and we explore the cinema of industrial soundtracks featuring Rammstein, Marilyn Manson and David Bowie. What to expect from the episode: We debate whether Fred Madison is the alpha or just a gut with a very overactive imagination. Jamie explains why this is his favourite Lynch film while Dan struggles to find any evidence of someone being kicked from the head or jumping onto a helicopter. We explore the theory that the entire movie was subconsciously inspired by the O.J. Simpson trial. Discussion around David Lynch's big hat and megaphone approach to on-set social distancing. We investigate the vampiric makeup choices and the quintessentially noir lighting of Peter Deming. Cathy and Todd discuss Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs for Zen Pop's space month, a 1987 Star Wars parody following Lone Starr and his half-man half-dog sidekick Barf as they rescue Princess Vespa from Dark Helmet and the incompetent President Skroob (whose name is literally an anagram of Brooks). The cast includes Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Joan Rivers, and Dom DeLuise as Pizza the Hutt. They discuss the WTF moments, the lines they quote at home, and the news that a sequel, Spaceballs: The New One, arrives April 23, 2027 with most of the original cast returning.
Andrew Mercado and James Manning review three new TV series this episode: Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed (AppleTV, 10 episodes)Paula (Tatiana Maslany) is a magazine fact-checker in the midst of a messy divorce from her ex-husband Karl which centres around the custody arrangements of their daughter Hazel. She begins paying Trevor, a webcam boy, for his time, during which she vents about her life and enjoys sexual experiences with him. One night, during one of their sessions, Paula witnesses Trevor being brutally attacked in his home. Reporting it to the Police, Detective Sofia Gonzalez believes it to be a scam. Co-starring are Murray Bartlett and Dolly De Leon. The Boroughs (Netflix, 8 episodes)The Boroughs is a Netflix sci-fi series executive-produced by the Duffer Brothers. It follows a quirky, resilient crew of retirees in a seemingly idyllic retirement community. The story kicks off in a picturesque retirement community, where a grieving newcomer experiences a bizarre and monstrous encounter. Super cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis and Bill Pullman. Kylie (Netflix, 3 episodes)Believe the hype, this really is an unfiltered look at the singer life including the major hits and plenty of revealing insights about and from her family and lovers. It doesn’t cover everything which would be a huge undertaking beyond the scope of this doco. There aren’t a lot of interviews but the director has secured the best with contributions from Pete Waterman, Jason Donovan, Nick Cave and sister Dannii – in addition to several sessions with Kylie on the couch. Plus: Andrew also talks about a new Crawford Productions YouTube channel which is home to some classic Australian TV series. James sounds a bit excited about watching Keeley Hawes playing a nun in the forthcoming series Falling.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The first Star Wars film in seven years just hit cinemas—and it works as a complete standalone. Pedro Pascal is the gruff dad bounty hunter, but the animatronic creature steals every scene. It's packed with action, hilarious moments, and surprisingly emotional beats. Netflix just dropped a three-part documentary about one of pop culture's biggest icons. It covers her early life in Australia, her rise to fame, past relationships, cancer diagnoses (including one she kept secret), and failed IVF journeys. It's glossy, emotional, and genuinely riveting—even if you're not already a superfan, you'll be by the end. Plus, the Duffer Brothers have executive produced an eight-episode gem about retirees in a desert retirement community discovering a sinister entity attacking residents. The cast is absolutely stacked, and it's genuinely creepy, chaotic, and emotional. Completely binge-worthy. We've officially crossed the halfway mark of our Space MAYhem marathon, and the fatigue is real, but the energy is high! We are still pushing through our single-day recording marathon, and for movie number three, we are throwing it back to the absolute gold standard of 90s summer blockbusters: Roland Emmerich's 1996 explosive spectacle, Independence Day.To survive this round of the marathon, we are shaking up a cocktail as on fire as the movie itself: Mackenzie's "Victory Cigar Old Fashioned"- a sweet and smoked take on a classic, that smells exactly like an alien mothership going down in flames. This week, we bask in the peak-90s charisma of Will Smith punching aliens in the face, Jeff Goldblum using a 1995 PowerBook to take down a technologically superior civilization with a literal computer virus, and Bill Pullman delivering one of the greatest cinematic speeches of all time. We laugh at the glorious absurdity of the science, marvel at the practical effects that still look better than most modern CGI, and debate whether there is a single better scene in cinema history than Judd Hirsch complaining about his lawyer while the world ends.If you want to hear us get deeply nostalgic about the peak era of popcorn cinema while we slowly lose our minds on hour six-ish of our recording day, this is the episode for you. We're blending our childhood love for this blockbuster giant with our usual vibes, making this the most explosive stop yet on our Space MAYhem itinerary. Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming up.

In this bonus episode we are tying into our month-long discussions about 80s sci-fi comedies we are turning our attention to the revered cult classic directed and written by the spoof legend Mel Brooks, Spaceballs. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about how this movie connected with audiences and alienated critics, and why that might have been the case, how Brooks who was one of the pioneers of the spoof comedy ended up overshadowed by more raunchy comedians together with edgier spoofs like Airplane! and The Naked Gun and how Spaceballs remains quite unique because even though it is there to parody one of the biggest movies of all time, it has cultivated its own footprint as well. Finally, we talk about Rick Moranis in his iconic role, we squabble over Bill Pullman and also note that Elon Musk has potentially done some cultural damage by including associations to Spaceballs in his products. For Father's Day, the Randomizer decided to troll dads everywhere with a tale of woe and trauma that sure makes one father look AWFUL. We watched "Redemption In Her Corner" (S21E13) this week. Don't worry though because plenty of other people get some stink on them too because this is Law & Order: SVU, after all. As per usual, Adam and Josh go down innumerable rabbit holes—trying to figure out just what Liv's birthday actually is, wondering what Barba was doing in Iowa investigating election fraud for primaries that don't exist, the origins of the boxing for fitness craze, and the origins of Italian soups. Fathers everywhere should listen to remind them that there are a lot of bad dads out there, and they should work to make sure they're not one of them.We also talk Munch My Benson Movie Club pick Brain Dead, an existential brainmelter featuring Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton. Zo ends up in yet another galaxy far, far, far, far away. By his reconning he's at the furthest galaxy, yet. Here there are no galaxy spanning empires, but their is a planet with a failing atmosphere and a massive military. Instead of putting forward policies that would save the environment of his world President Skroob would rather steal the atmosphere from a planet with a weaker military. The power disparity between his planet and the planet that he plans to attack is so great that it doesn't even matter that his troops are mostly Assholes. Fortunately, a spoiled princess, a loyal droid, a scruffy pilot and his half-man/half-dog best friend stand in the way to thwart the President and all the dastardly forces of planet Spaceballs. Joanna began her career in action fare such as Steve McQueen's thriller Bullitt, the Jason Robards drama Fools, The Laughing Policeman starring Walter Matthau and The Outfit with Robert Duvall. Her first co-starring role came opposite George C. Scott in the offbeat comedy caper The Bank Shot. Television became an important medium for her in the late 1970s, with guest parts on all the popular shows of the time, including Dallas. Trapper John, M.D., Taxi, Starsky and Hutch, Charlie's Angels, Lou Grant and a recurring role on Falcon Crest. Joanna languished in three failed series attempts--The Roller Girls, 240-Robert and The Family Tree--before hitting the jackpot with the sitcom Buffalo Bill opposite Dabney Coleman. The 1980s also brought about positive, critical reception for Joanna on film as well, especially in a number of showy portrayals, notably her snake-dancing replicant in the futuristic sci-fi thriller Blade Runner, her radio journalist involved with Nick Nolte and Ed Harris in the political drama Under Fire and her co-starring role in a wacky triangle with Bob Hoskins and a hyperkinetic hare in the highly ambitious part toon/part fantasy film Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Back on the TV front she was seen in recurring roles on L.A. Law, Diagnosis Murder, The District and Boston Legal. Since then Joanna has juggled a number of quality film and TV assignments, including her Emmy-nominated recurring role as a quirky, capricious mother/psychiatrist in Six Feet Under. Joanna currently stars in the movie Killing Faith opposite Guy Pierce and Bill Pullman. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

On season 10, episode 9 of Paid in Puke, we're falling for John Dahl's 1993 neo-noir The Last Seduction, starring Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, and Bill Pullman. Fiorentino commands the screen as a femme fatale who is as brilliant and sexy as she is cold, and calculating. She steals the whole pot from a joint drug deal devised with her husband (Pullman), and hides out in small town in upstate NY. There, she passes the time with a naive townie (Berg), who eventually proves himself to be useful in ways other than sex. Dahl directed this film as a black comedy, but the script is also extremely smart and tight, making it a standout of the 90's neo-noir genre. We have a lot of fun dissecting Bridget's schemes, appreciating her fashion and quick wit, marveling at the range of Bill Pullman, the ahead-of its time race and homophobia commentary (including a non-problematic trans character played by an actual trans woman!) and the surprising connections to Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar. On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal the aliases we would adopt if we were ever to go on the lam.

Alright Scary is back this month with a movie your parents probably rented in the 90s, “Malice”! Its ingredients alone make it a cut above the domestic thrillers of the era, with Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman and Alec Baldwin in a triangle full of twists, a fourth billed Bebe Neuwirth doing her best Columbo, Ann Bancroft devouring an entire set without getting out of her chair, Jerry Goldsmith at his usual bombastic, Shirley Baker as a waitress, Peter Gallagher's eyebrows, Blythe Danner's daughter, nurse drag, a beautiful hairy chest and a final showdown in a blind kid's bedroom. We also get into some spooky and not so spooky recommendations and wrap things up by finally talking about this season of Dragula: Titans!00:00 Malice56:00 October Recommendations01:07:27 DragulaBecome a Matreon at the Sister Mary level to get full access to Season 7 of Drag Race UK, plus brackets, movie reviews and past seasons of US Drag Race, UK, Canada, Down Under, Espana, Global All Stars, Philippines and more.Join us at our OnlyMary's level for our current recap of Season 4 of Drag Race plus even more movie reviews, brackets, and deep dives into our personal lives!Patreon: www.patreon.com/alrightmaryEmail: alrightmarypodcast@gmail.comInstagram: @alrightmarypodJohnny: @johnnyalso (Instagram)Colin: @colindrucker_ (Instagram)Web: www.alrightmary.com

One of the year's best films opens in theaters this weekend, and today Ian sits down with Killing Faith star DeWanda Wise and writer/director Ned Crowley for a look at the making of this twisty, twisted, and powerful supernatural horror western! The film centers on Sarah (Wise), a freed slave living on the outskirts of a desert town in 1849. She is determined to get to her daughter to a faith healer (Bill Pullman) in a neighboring territory, in the hopes that he can exorcise whatever evil causes instantaneous death in anyone (or anything) the little girl touches. Along the way, Sarah collects a group of troubled outcasts, including a disgraced ether junky/doctor named Steelbender (Guy Pearce), whose atheism is put to the test with every bizarre encounter besetting their caravan. In the following two interviews, Ian digs into Killing Faith's characters, the conditions under which this top-notch indie was pulled together, and how the film connects to Crowley's first feature, Middle Man--which he and Ian discussed nearly a decade ago. Plus: You'll learn about Ned's surprise endorsement from the Master of Horror! Though you may not have heard of Killing Faith, it has Kicking the Seat's highest possible recommendation as a big screen experience if it's playing near you.Support Kicking the Seat on Patreon, subscribe to us on YouTube, and follow us at:XLetterboxdInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Killing Faith trailer.Bonus! A CLASSIC ROCKER FINDS OUT HE HAS A LOVE CHILD FROM THE 80's, some insane Movies announced and A wild list of celebrities and how they caught their significant others cheating… it's like celebs are just like us guys!CRAP ON FRIDAY Rick Moranis has been gone way too long. Even those new "Ghostbusters" movies didn't lure him back to Hollywood. But I am quite excited to announce that he WILL return to once again play Dark Helmet in "Spaceballs 2"!!! Bill Pullman will return as the hero Lone Starr, too. And Mel Brooks will be back as Yogurt . . . and, presumably . . . President Skroob. (He played both characters in the original.) Josh Gad co-wrote the script, and he's expected to be in it, too. Pullman's son Lewis Pullman has also been cast, along with Keke Palmer . . . but there's no word who they're playing. There's also no word on any other returning cast members. Obviously, John Candy, Joan Rivers, and Dick Van Patten won't be back, since they're no longer with us. Mel released the first teaser yesterday. There's no footage, since filming hasn't begun yet. It starts with a text crawl that makes fun of all the "Star Wars" prequels, sequels, sequels to the prequels, prequels to the sequels, and TV spin-offs. Then it lists all the "Dune", "Jurassic Park", "Avatar", and Marvel movies, plus DC's TWO attempts to start a cinematic universe . . . and just about every other overdone franchise you can name. Then, after a quick appearance from Mel, we get a shot of Rick Moranis' cracked helmet, and the tagline: "The Schwartz Awakens in 2027." Which sounds like a possible title but it's spaceballs and mel brooks so it could be anything. Here is Mel making his announcement. Jerry Seinfeld Proposes ‘Live-Action Sequel' to 'Bee Movie'Jerry Seinfeld has people buzzin' with this idea! The comedic genius posted about the possibility of a “live-action sequel” to his 2007 animated hit Bee Movie.“Bee Movie, which came out nearly 20 years ago, is #4 on Netflix,” he wrote on Instagram showing a hand holding a tennis ball with a honey bee on it. The next slide was the movie's poster, an image of Seinfeld's character Barry B. Benson similarly straddling a tennis ball.“Today, my friend Spike Feresten, one of the writers on the film, was playing tennis and this happened."He continued, “Clearly a sign. Time for a live-action sequel..?" DreamWorks' Bee Movie, which Seinfeld produced, co-wrote, and starred in along with Renée Zellweger, has become a cult favorite since its release.Bee Movie also featured the voices of Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Chris Rock, Kathy Bates, Megan Mullally, Oprah Winfrey, and several celebrities appearing as animated versions of themselves, including Larry King, Ray Liotta, and Sting.Saint Louis' own Nelly and Ashanti are putting their lives on TV for all to see. They announced an upcoming reality show called Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together.A show synopsis says Nelly and Ashanti "rekindle their love, navigate the ups and downs of being newlyweds and new parents, and juggle their careers."The eight-episode series will air on Peacock starting June 26th.A DNA Test Connects Billy Idol To A Son He Didn't Know He HadDetails on the lovechild Billy Idol didn't know he had until a few years ago have surfaced.Idol's daughter, Bonnie, shared in the new doc, 'Billy Idol Should Be Dead', "My husband just surprised me with a DNA test as a Christmas present [a few years ago]. Then a few weeks later, I get the results back on the app and open it and I'm like, who is this? This Brant. His info reads, 'New York, 1985, looking for my biological dad.' I was like, ‘What?'"Brant, Idol's lovechild, grew up believing his dad was someone else until a different DNA questioned his mother's claims about his father. After confronting his mom, she told Brant, "Well, it's pretty crazy, but back in the day, we broke up and I actually spent a weekend with Billy Idol."Fans have done the math and calculate that Brant was conceived during Idol's wildly successful 1984 'Rebel Yell' tour.Idol has whole-heartedly accepted Brant as family, saying, "I really enjoyed being a dad. I always wanted a boy and a girl, and I finagled my way into a boy and a girl. I actually had a son that I didn't realize, who I fathered on the Rebel Yell tour without knowing it. So I somehow finagled this as well."Brant was at Idol's Walk of Fame ceremony back in 2023.Prime Video Will Soon Show Double The AdsAmazon Prime Video is about to double the number of commercials shown per hour on its ad-supported membership level. An Adweek report got the news from an Amazon spokesperson about the amount of commercials going to "four to six minutes per hour" from the two to three minutes that Prime users are used to. In 2024, subscribers who had ad-free access were forced to pay an extra $3 a month to maintain the status. Jay-Z Loses $1 Million NBA Finals Bet Jay-Z is out $1 million after losing a bet on the NBA Finals. Jay placed a bet prior to the series, banking on the Oklahoma City Thunder to win the championship in five games. After Wednesday night's Thunder loss to the Indiana Pacers, OKC can't win the series unless they do it in six or seven games. Jay-Z would have won $3.5 million if the bet had cashed in. With a net worth of $2.5 billion, we're sure Jay-Z will be alright. Ok you guys remember Spinal Tap? The Album cover debate with the label and why it became an all black cover or as Nigel would say NONE MORE BLACK? It was because the original had a woman on all fours with a dog leash on and it was deemed sexist…. To which Nigel replies “Whats wrong with being sexy? Well get this, Sabrina Carpenter announced her new album yesterday, and it's causing a lot of controversy. It's called "Man's Best Friend", and the cover has Sabrina on all fours, in front of a man who's pulling a handful of her hair. A women's advocacy group in Scotland called it "regressive", saying it reduces women to, quote, "pets, props, and possessions," and promotes "an element of violence and control." Sabrina's fans are defending it as SATIRE, and a commentary on how badly women are treated. And some are pointing out that the first single, "Manchild", actually makes FUN of men. HERE IS A CLIP OF THATMeanwhile, in the new "Rolling Stone" cover story, Sabrina talks about being criticized for the sexual imagery in her stage show. She says, quote "It's always so funny to me when people complain. They're like, 'All she does is sing about this.' But those are the songs that you've made popular. Clearly you love sex. You're obsessed with it." She adds, quote, "I truly feel like I've never lived in a time where women have been picked apart more, and scrutinized in every capacity. I'm not just talking about me. I'm talking about every female artist that is making art right now." Pope Leo isn't even the most famous guy in his family. The "New York Times" researched his family tree, and found out that he's related to a bunch of celebrities. The link is an ancestor from about six generations back. He name was Louis Boucher de Grandpre, and he was born in Quebec. And because of him, Leo is distant cousins with Justin Bieber, Justin Trudeau, Angelina Jolie, Hillary Clinton, Jack Kerouac, and Madonna. It's interesting that Leo would be related to Madonna, given that the Catholic Church has condemned her several times . . . most famously when she released her "Like a Prayer" video in 1989. A few years ago, Madonna reached out to Pope Francis, asking to meet with him to discuss "important matters." She told him, quote, "I've been ex-communicated 3 times. It doesn't seem fair." If you've ever wondered how the creators of "Friends" came up with the character of Joey Tribbiani . . . we might just have the answer this morning. Joey Lawrence claims Matt LeBlanc's character was based on HIS character Joey Russo from "Blossom". Lawrence says, quote, "Joey Russo was so successful that when they were creating 'Friends', they wanted a 25-year-old version of that." Supposedly, Matt's character wasn't even originally called Joey, but they changed it because the "Blossom" character was so successful. Joey even claims that Matt was sent to tapings of "Blossom" where he would, quote, "sit up in the audience with a yellow notepad and take notes on how I portrayed Joey Russo." He says they wanted Matt to bring the "innocence" of Joey Russo to Joey Tribbiani, so the character could, quote, "get away with his womanizing." I guess the Grammys were sick of hearing about whether Beyoncé deserved to win Best Country Album for "Cowboy Carter". So, they just announced a major change. For next year's Grammys, the award formally known as Best Country Album will now be called Best Contemporary Country Album . . . and they will also be adding a new category: Best Traditional Country Album. There's a lot to unpack here. And one year after Beyoncé wins makes the timing of this all the more clickbait-y. According to the Grammy website, "traditional country music", quote, "adheres to the more traditional sound structures of the country genre, including rhythm and singing style, lyrical content, as well as traditional country instrumentation such as acoustic guitar, steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, piano, and live drums." Where "contemporary country music", quote, "remains reminiscent and relevant to the legacy of country music's culture, while also engaging in more contemporary music forms." Someone tweeted, "Morgan Wallen and Post Malone better not be in the traditional country category at the Grammys, because in what world are they traditional country?" Wait, hold up. When Morgan collaborated with Alvin and the Chipmunks, that wasn't traditional country??New in Theaters: "How to Train Your Dragon", "Materialists", and "The Life of Chuck" There's nothing like a good breakup story. Here are seven times a celebrity found out their partner was cheating in an unconventional way: 1. Demi Moore learned that Ashton Kutcher was having an affair in 2011, from a Google Alert. When she called him on it, he admitted it right away. Her response was, quote, "Are you [effing] kidding me?" 2. Britney Spears started dating lawyer David Lucado in 2012. But in 2014, her father found out there was paparazzi footage of David kissing another woman. He bought it to prevent it from being released, and Britney broke it off. 3. Kourtney Kardashian dumped Scott Disick in 2008, after finding texts on his phone from a contact called, quote, "my wife." They did the on-and-off thing until 2015, when photos emerged of Scott with another woman in France. 4. Elizabeth Hurley found out Hugh Grant was cheating on her in 1995, when he got arrested for GETTING IT ON with Sunset Boulevard prostitute Divine Brown in his car. They didn't break up until 2000, and they're still friends. 5. Laura Dern found out Billy Bob Thornton was being unfaithful when the news broke that he had ELOPED with Angelina Jolie in 2000. She was away making a movie, and she never saw it coming. 6. Eva Longoria's marriage to NBA star Tony Parker ended in 2010, after she found inappropriate texts with another woman on his phone. 7. This one's ancient history, but it was a HUGE tabloid story back in the day: In 1958, actress Debbie Reynolds was missing her husband, Eddie Fisher, because he was supposedly away on tour. So she decided to give her friend Elizabeth Taylor a call . . . and who answered Liz's phone? Eddie FREAKIN' Fisher. (!!!) Eddie left Debbie and married Liz, but that only lasted five years.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
