J. Elvis Weinstein was a head writer on many shows so he knows a good joke while Jay just jokes often from character. On this show we sort out the differences. Also J. talks about his funny family. Hobbies like ice cream, bad jokes, bubble gum jokes, fortune cookies, losing money on documentaries, saving your marriage by wasting less money than your wife thinks, Mystery Science Theater, old credits, and how jokes ruin dramas, hack jokes, improvisations, the perfect punchline, and hating Seinfeld. Bio: J. Elvis Weinstein began his stand-up comedy career at age 15 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. At 17, he was one of the founding writer/performers of "Mystery Science Theater 3000” (MST3K) as the original voice/puppeteer of robots Tom Servo and Gypsy, and the role of Dr. Lawrence Erhardt.Since moving to Los Angeles, he has worked as a writer/producer on a wide range of network TV comedy, including "Freaks and Geeks", "Malcolm and Eddie", "Dead Last", and "My Guide to Becoming a Rock Star.” He was also the Head Writer on "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Later with Greg Kinnear". In 2008 he reunited with his MST3K co-stars to form “Cinematic Titanic” which toured U.S. Theaters as a live show and produced 12 DVDs, now available as a box set.J. Elvis has written and directed 3 films - 2 feature documentaries (“I Need You To Kill” & “Michael Des Barres: Who Do You Want Me To Be?”) and a comedy short (“The Mediocre Samaritan”). As a performer, he continues to perform as a stand-up (releasing the album “Chunks” in 2019), co-hosts the podcast “Thought Spiral” with comedian Andy Kindler, and recently co-starred in the feature film “The Fiddling Horse” (2020).

As a special holiday gift to The Film Stage podcast feed, listen to a new Box Office Bonanza! Here we talk about random box office weekends and where they fit into our lives. The movies, the memories! This episode features Dan Mecca, Conor O'Donnell, Mitchell Beaupre, Jordan Raup, and Cory Everett. The box office weekend in question is July 21, 2000. The number one movie in the country was the Robert Zemeckis-directed, Clark Gregg-scripted, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer-starring supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. The number three movie was the second Pokémon feature film, Pokémon 2000. Gladiator was still in theaters, so was U-571. But at the start, we mount a passionate defense of the new Zemeckis epic Here, which has now arrived digitally. After that, we talk about Martin Lawrence movies. We talk about how horrible Greg Kinnear's character is in Amy Heckerling's Loser. We talk about Al Pacino's new autobiography Sonny Boy. The sport doc Michael Jordan to the Max gets some discussion. An Office Space reference is completely ignored! There are too many 9/11 jokes! How many? You'll have to listen to find out. We remember that great bit with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise from the MTV Movie Awards (“He's Harmless”). There's an appreciation of Jesus' Son as well. There's a Saving Silverman reference, talk of yo-yos and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a remembrance of that time The Perfect Storm and The Patriot came out the same weekend. Finally, for a few moments I'm convinced that nobody has been recording the podcast! There's a lot here, people! We're thankful for you listening to us have fun! We hope you have some fun too! Check out The Film Stage's 2024 Holiday Gift Guide and Cory Everett's slew of Cinephile books and games! Enjoy this episode and we welcome other interesting box office weekends to cover in the future. Stay tuned in 2025 for more podcast news from The Film Stage!

We're taking a quick break from the spooky this week as we review Mystery Men, the 1999 super hero parody starring Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, and Paul Reubens. Champion City is once again in peril, mostly caused by it's greatest hero Captain Amazing. It's now up to a rag-tag team of lesser known super heroes to save the city they love.Support the showCatch new episodes of the Where to Stick It Podcast every Tuesday and Thursday. As Melanie and I prepared for this episode one question kept coming up ... Who is the protagonist? Melanie argues that the entire family is the protagonist, but I think that Olive (who is the Little Miss Sunshine contestant) is the protagonist. It's an interesting question and our discussion about it is even more interesting. Our exit today has us trying to hold a seat for our date at an Everclear concert. This week, we are talking about Loser, written and directed by Amy Heckerling. Along the way, we talk about the wonderful cast of the film (especially Mena Suvari and Greg Kinnear), Dora the Explorer, Simon Birch, New York movies, Andy Dick, confusing character ages, the legacy of American Pie, and the ever-growing Zak Orth is an Eccentric College Student Cinematic Universe. And both Tripp and Ross recommend some tonally opposite movies from this one. Thememusic by Jonworthymusic. Powered by RiversideFM. CFF Films with Ross and friends. Send us a textKatie and Bridget log onto AOL as they re-watch the 90's rom-com: You've Got Mail! Just when you thought that AshleyMadison was bad, we're reminded of how people were electronically cheating in their relationships well beforehand! Come along as we meet Kathleen Kelly, a woman who owns her dead mother's bookstore, a brownstone (somehow), and has a boyfriend who is really gonna love Twitter one day. Her world gets rocked when Joe Fox, a multimillionaire, decides to open up a mega bookstore across the street from her shop. What the two don't know is that they've been AOL emailing and falling for each other this entire time. That would be cute if it ended there wouldn't it? WRONG! Joe forces Kathleen's store to go out of business, everybody breaks up with their boyfriend/girlfriend, and Joe realizes he's been emailing Kathleen - keeps it a secret from her - and then does psychological warfare to force her to hang out with him/start to like him AND SOMEHOW IT WORKS! ...We know. It sounds like a horror movie. But nope! It's a rom-com! Yay! Released in 1998, it stars Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, Greg Kinnear, Parker Posey, Jean Stapleton, Steve Zahn, Heather Burns, and Dave Chappelle.

We first grew to love Lew Temple for his work in such films as The Devil's Rejects and on The Walking Dead...but we finally met him, we found out that he was a giant baseball fan and a truly nice person...so we were excited to find out that he's co-starring in a new baseball movie alongside Luke Wilson and Greg Kinnear, titled "You Gotta Believe"...and we found out all about it this morning!!
A great movie that is very difficult movie to recommend because of its subject matter, Paul Schrader's Auto Focus (2002), the story of TV-star Bob Crane, is another of Schrader's portraits of a man whose self-destruction we watch with admiration for the writing and unease at what we're seeing. It's a combination of The Lost Weekend, Reefer Madness, and Sunset Blvd. with Willem Defoe at his creepiest. But it's much more than perfect recreations of Hogan's Heroes or Greg Kinnear's incredible performance: it's a movie about the power of movies and images and of how nothing seems real until it is filmed—an idea we see all the time as people hold up their phones to record their vacations, kids' sporting events, or office birthday parties. It's a shocking film, but Schrader seems to have been as shocked to make it as we are to see it. Auto Focus is based on Robert Graysmith's The Murder of Bob Crane. If you are interested in the details of Crane's murder—which remains a cold case—you may want to read John Hook's Who Killed Bob Crane? The Final Close-Up. A more traditional biography of Crane that seeks to tell more than what Schrader does in Auto Focus was published in 2015. Follow us on X and Letterboxd–and let us know what you'd like us to watch! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the final episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we have been pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. We skip ahead to the year 2003 for the final bout, where the Coen Brothers took a crack at directing a writer-for-hire script, the rom-com INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, and the Farrelly Brothers got stuck on brotherhood with the conjoined twin comedy STUCK ON YOU. With Intolerable Cruelty the Coens teamed back up with George Clooney, who plays hot shot divorce attorney Miles Massey. Massey is known for his patented pre-nuptial agreement, that is known to be impenetrable. After assisting a cheating husband, millionaire Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), in preventing his wife Marilynn (Catherine Zeta Jones) from getting any of her husband's wealth in their divorce, Miles finds himself a victim of a sophisticated revenge plot orchestrated by Marilynn. The only problem is, Miles falls for Marilynn, clouding his vision, and opening him up to her wrath. It's not quite the cutting film that we're used to from the Coens, but it has some sweet moments, great chemistry from the leads, and some really great and shocking moments. Is it enough to take down the Farrellys? It's a tough order this month, as the Farrellys churned out one of their low-key best films in 2003 with Stuck On You. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as conjoined twins Bob and Walt Tenor, who live in Martha's Vineyard. Bob is into sports and loves the simple life of cooking food at their restaurant in Massachusetts. Walt on the other hand is hoping to become a big time actor. The brothers venture out to Hollywood to allow Walt a chance at fame, when they are discovered by Cher (you know, Cher), who casts Walt to be the co-star in her new TV show – hoping that the network will pull the plug on the show. However, Walt turns out to be a huge hit, causing the brothers to consider their future stuck together. The film is riddled with cameos, such as Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Luke Wilson Frankie Muniz and even JESSE VENTURA!!! You may think we are joking when saying it's one of their best films, but this truly is a sweet, funny, and underrated film from the Farrellys. Give it a go if you don't believe us. To embrace the present you need to make peace with your past. Dr. Ming Wang learned this first hand when the challenges of bringing a blind child from darkness to light made him come face to face with his own darkness. SIGHT, starring Greg Kinnear and Terry Chen, follows the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese American who defies all odds to become a world-renowned eye surgeon. Drawing on the grit he gained growing up in the Chinese cultural revolution of the 70’s, Dr. Wang sets out to restore the sight of a blind orphan. Dr. Wang shares how his heart was moved from atheist to Jesus follower, how faith works with science (not against it), and the incredible advances in technology and their impact on eye surgeries today. Also, in this episode Shawna shares how God is showing her through Proverbs and personal reflection the idolatry of self-worship. And Perry shares, “If my life was always easy, I don’t think my desire for Jesus would be that deep.” From Perry’s life and the apostle Paul, we have a conversation about the transformational power of hardship.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There have been so many stories over the years about someone defying the odds to achieve some level of greatness in their lifetime. So many that experts have dug quite deeply in a pursuit to find the common threads that define why someone is driven to seek high-performance and uncommon results. While the research is sometimes conflicting, all can agree that a person who defies the odds has developed a range of coping skills, personality traits and supports, in home, school, and community that help them overcome adversity.Dr. Ming Wang is one such person. A poor Chinese immigrant who grew up in 1970s rural China, Dr. Wang faced persecution and despair at every turn. But with the support of his family and his own unwavering determination, somehow, some way, he found his way to America to attend Harvard and MIT. And through his research, Dr. Wang developed an innovative technology that subsequently restored sight to millions of people.Dr. Wang is the subject of a new movie from Angel Studios called ‘Sight'. Starring Oscar-nominated actor Greg Kinnear and Terry Chin, the film explores Dr. Wang's traumatic past and celebrates his ability to not only defy the odds but to go beyond his natural abilities to find solutions that would make the world a better place.Andrew Hyatt not only directed this movie but also co-wrote the script. His award-winning resume also includes films like “The Blind”, “Paul, Apostle of Christ”, and “Full of Grace”. It is Andrew's desire to inspire others to persevere and to follow their dreams.Andrew joins us on the Crossmap Podcast to talk about Dr. Wang's relentless pursuit of excellence when everything seemed to be working against him. Listen as he explains why, in our desperate need for heroes, we should look no further than to those who have dedicated their lives to helping others in humble, non-attention seeking ways.Links to CrossmapCrossmap WebsiteCrossmap Facebook

It's the Little Movie That Could of 2006, “Little Miss Sunshine”! It shined at the Oscars, including a frankly totally deserved Best Supporting Actress nomination for Abigail Breslin and equally wholly deserved wins for Michael Arndt's screenplay and Alan Arkin as dirty grandpa. But there's also the way Toni Collette eats that popsicle and Greg Kinnear dealing with a kinky cop and Steve Carell and Paul Dano's misanthropic uncle and son making a connection on a pier before Olive's truly iconic dance routine. The movie is also riddled with featured ensemble standouts, from Linda to Kirby to Pam, and that score that just makes us want to do what we love and fuck the rest. We are back with another adventure in our Capes 'N Cowards season! Last week we brought you the adventures of The Venture Bros. but this week we return fully to the worlds of superheroes. On today's episode, we are covering one of the weirder superhero films, we are talking about Mystery Men. Mystery Men is a film loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics. It follows a group of misfits, weirdos, and outcasts from the superhero world of Champion City. The team is "lead" by Mr. Furious and features the Shoveler and the Blue Raja. As the world turns quickly turmoil, this group of weirdos has to find more like them to make a team to save the world. These aren't the cream of the crop but more like the heroes you call when everyone else is busy but they've got the heart to save the world. The film has one of the most impressive cast lists including Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Claire Forlani, Kel Mitchell, Paul Reubens, Janeane Garofalo, Wes Studi, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Suzy Izzard, and Tom Waits. The cast is stacked with absolutely incredible talent and features a handful of cameos that still blow me away. Who decided Michael Bay would play a frat boy supervillain? I just want to shake their hands. Cid and Dan talk about the film at length. Cid gives their thoughts on what the film is trying to capture. They also get into how the film has aged but more so how it was ahead of it's time. As the superhero film craze gets closer and closer to bursting, it's the best time to take a look back at Mystery Men which satirized these films before they even existed. If there was any film that was released before its time, it is Mystery Men. It sits in a place before the superhero craze changed film forever. Make sure to check out our past episodes including the first episode of the season which covers The Boys which you can see a lot of inspiration from this film in.
