In Part 2, we pick up where we left off in Part 1. Allegra was bartending at Second City in Chicago. The day of her graduation ceremony, at Columbia College Chicago, she packed up all her belongings and drove to LA with a friend. Allegra really wanted to be in California. Not yet totally sure about what she was gonna do, she took the plunge, so to speak. She'd realized that she wasn't going to pursue art. But she figured, correctly, that in addition to the warmer climate, there would be opportunities to seize in Los Angeles. But Allegra soon found that the challenges of a pre-smartphone Southern California were overwhelming. But she gave it a go. Allegra managed to get what she refers to today as "the worst job she's ever had in her life"—taking school photos of kids. On September 11, 2001, as planes hit the Twin Towers on the other side of the continent, Allegra was at a school in LA taking photos of schoolchildren. Later that day, she had a job interview that, of course, required driving. The freeways were empty, which is an eerie sight. But she got that job. And that's the story of how Allegra Madsen became an art handler. Following a couple of years hanging art (Warhol's Mao and Brillo Boxes among the art Allegra handled), she dabbled in freelance work, putting art up on walls in the homes of Los Angeles billionaires among them. Several years into that, Allegra started to feel that energy—this time, pushing her away from LA. She packed up her red sports car again (a 1988 Porsche, by the way) and headed to The Bay. Going back to the time in her life when she immersed herself in books, Beat writers caught Allegra's imagination. She recounts her first visit to San Francisco and her eventual move north. Like me, she had no idea that she'd still be here all these decades later. It took Allegra some time to "unpack," so to speak. She moved around The Bay a little, before eventually settling back a block from her first spot in Oakland, where she lives today. She went to school at CCA (then known as CCAC) and studied curatorial practice. It's where she discovered and got really into social art practices, which she goes into in our talk. "Using art to build community," essentially. Her thesis project took place on Third Street, just as the light rail was being built along that corridor. Her thesis exhibition took place at the Bayview Opera House. A few years after getting her Master's degree, Allegra opened a cafe in Temescal in Oakland. The neighborhood was rapidly gentrifying at the time, and she wanted to have a space where folks from many different walks of life could visit and have a good experience. Allegra sold the café after about five years. She pivoted back to art and event planning. Most of her work took the form of events in the Bayview. And part of that event planning involved movie programming. This led to a role at the BVOH, where she did more movie showings. During her time at the opera house, she began to partner with Frameline. In 2021, she joined the film fest org as programming director. It was the first year since the pandemic started, and Allegra believes part of why she was hired is that she had proven that she could program movies in "weird" places. They hosted a movie as part of Pride that summer at Oracle Park and did some drive-ins (remember those?). In late 2023, Allegra became interim executive director of Frameline. She assumed the permanent job this February. Follow Frameline on Instagram and other social media to stay up to date on everything they do. We end the podcast with Allegra's take on our theme this season: Keep it local. We recorded this podcast in the Frameline office in South of Market in November 2024. Photography by Dan Hernandez

Here is what we are going to work on to shift that perspective and be in this moment of your life: · Be more present. · Make more time for friends and loved ones. · Do more outdoor activities. · Do more activities that feed your soul and bring you joy. · Have more grace for yourself and others. · Be a better listener. · Be smarter by reading. · Be more successful at following your heart. · Practice is fun and practice makes better. · Practice self-care. · Practice having a home filled with beautiful memories and things that make you think of those beautiful memories, the memories that bloom from the trials and tribulations of your daily life. Make some notes about all these points. For example, to be more present I have allotted time to be on my phone and allotted time for one-on-one with my children. ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________ If you'd like a way to support us hit "like and subscribe". This week, I sit down with Tyler Podomik. Tyler is a painter and ceramicist from Pittsburgh who marches to the beat of his own drum. Tyler drops by the studio to talk to me about his work and how he came to be who he is today. Early on, he had no idea where his life would take him. Now, he spends his days creating. I was introduced to Tyler from a previous guest Stephen Jaskulski. Jazz told me “Tyler is going to be the greatest painter to come out of the city of Pittsburgh” so I had to have him on and find out why. We talk about everything from our previous shitty jobs at a local car dealership, his introduction to art, how CCAC changed his life, capitalizing on opportunities when they are presented to us, and so much more. I had a great time learning about who Tyler Podomik is and I think you will enjoy our talk. Thanks for listening. - Tyler Podomik is hosting his first Solo Exhibition ‘Love Letters' on April 14th at Studio 4. ICA San Diego director Andrew Utt talks about: Moving back to San Diego, where he grew up, after years away in the Bay Area and South America, and why he did; why San Diego's art community/culture isn't known as an art destination, and how he tries to address that deficiency; his route to becoming a curator, starting with his undergrad years at California College of the Arts, when he went to grad students' studios and had the conversations that would inform his prolific studio visits over the years; the importance of bringing in outside artists, sometimes to be shown alongside local artists, but at the same time, the ‘brain drain' of artists emerging from SD-based art schools and leaving for L.A. (or elsewhere) for more opportunities, the exodus of which becomes a generational loss over time; teaching artists, and the challenge of their retention; the ICA's 5-foot and 10-foot rules for interacting with new visitors outside the museum; and where art engagement is headed, in terms of infiltrating cities, and through the growth of VR, AI and other interactive platforms.

This week, I sit down with Todd Minoski of Goathead Knives. Todd and I have been friends for a long time. We bonded over heavy music and chain-smoking cigarettes outside of CCAC. Even after all these years, Todd and I always kept in touch. I feel like that tells you a lot about what type of guy he is. This week he stopped by the studio and we talk about everything from growing up working on cars, Aftermath AD, the origin of Goathead Knives, how he honed his craft, almost losing a toe, and so much more. It's a great one and I'm thankful to have him as a friend. I implore you to go and check out his work. Learn about the new Schell Games Apprenticeship Program! – Schell Games, the largest full-service educational and entertainment game development company in the United States, today announced a partnership with Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) to create the Schell Games Apprenticeship Program (SGAP), a hybrid training curriculum that will guide aspiring gaming professionals through a three-year Associate Degree in Multimedia Programming, Simulation, and Gaming. The program, which launches in the fall of 2022, is a blend of classroom study (20 hours per week) and paid on-the-job training (20 hours) at Schell Games' Station Square office, including professional training and development company-specific onboarding, and curriculum and project work. Schell Games will pay the full tuition of the apprentices, two of whom will make up the program's inaugural class. The company will also provide public transit or parking passes to cover students' commutes. “Game development companies today need to be as innovative in our recruitment and development of talent as we do in our games and applications,” said Schell Games CEO Jesse Schell. “This partnership with CCAC is the first degree-granting apprenticeship program in the games industry. It represents a grassroots effort for the greater Pittsburgh community but also a first step in the creation of a broader, deeper talent pipeline inclusive of students who can't or choose not to attend four-year universities.” Once reserved primarily for trade industries, apprenticeships are becoming more strategically important in sectors such as technology and games. A recent McKinsey & Company study stated that half of all work activities could become automated as soon as 2035, potentially creating a global shortage of skilled workers. Apprenticeship programs address these issues by closing skill gaps or reskilling those uprooted by automation. In the SGAP, participants will work side-by-side with game developers on actual projects to gain real-world experience in the games industry. They will have the opportunity to mentor under every discipline, which includes engineering, design, art, and production. At the end of their apprenticeship, they will have the skills and knowledge to confidently enter the games industry workforce. “The only way to keep up with the pace of automation and close the skills gap is for public education and private companies to come together in new ways,” said Rebecca Dupont, Department Head of Computer Information Technologies, North Campus and West Hills Center for CCAC. “We hope that this initiative with Schell Games is a template for business and academia alike.” CCAC students interested in applying for the SGAP can do so through the school's website. The application includes a 300-word essay indicating their desire and outlining their strengths and what they hope to gain from the program. A selection committee will interview finalists chosen from the application pool and select the final candidates no later than July 2022. # # # ABOUT SCHELL GAMES Schell Games is the largest full-service educational and entertainment game development company in the United States. Let’s begin today with a Patreon-fueled shout-out. Charlottesville 350 is the local chapter of a national organization that seeks to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Charlottesville 350 uses online campaigns, grassroots organizing, and mass public actions to oppose new coal, oil and gas projects, and build 100% clean energy solutions that work for all. To learn more about their most active campaigns, including a petition drive to the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, visit their Facebook page at facebook.com/cville350 On today’s program:The CDC has approved booster shots for all adult AmericansThe city fills one position while another became vacant The Virginia Supreme Court appoints two Special Masters to complete the redistricting process Members of the Crozet Community Advisory Committee debrief after Supervisors adopt a master planCOVID updateAs the week ended, the percent positivity creeped up slightly to 5.8 percent as reported by the Virginia Department of Health and the seven day average rose to 1,518. Nearly a million Virginians have received a third dose or a booster shot. The seven day average for doses administered a day was 40,389 on Friday. Also on Friday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the use of the Moderna and Pfizer booster shots for all adults, and the Centers for Disease Control followed suit later in the day. Dr. Costi Sifri is director of hospital epidemiology at the University of Virginia Health System, and he said this means anyone who completed their two-dose cycle of Pfizer and Moderna can now get a booster dose. “We’re at a point right now where that is going to start including a fair number of people,” Dr. Sifri said. “It’s clear that boosters are really beneficial in boosting up the number of antibodies.”Dr. Sifri said there are an increasing number of “breakthrough-cases” in people who were vaccinated over six months ago. Some of these cases have resulted in hospitalizations and Dr. Sifri recommended those at higher risk should schedule their booster. “I really strongly encourage those people to get a booster especially as we head into the holiday season and as we are starting to see increasing rates of COVID in the nation as well as our community,” Dr. Sifri said. Dr. Sifri said others should consider getting the third dose, especially if they want to avoid contracting COVID. “There hasn’t been much of a rush,” Dr. Sifri said. “Right now we understand that about 16 percent of people in our health district who are eligible for a booster vaccine has received one.”Dr. Reid Adams is the Chief Medical Officer at UVA Health. His recommendation is a little more sharp.“I think the time is now,” Dr. Adams said. “We have gotten to a lower rate in Virginia but it’s certainly not low enough. If you look around the country, particularly in the midwest and the upper plains, we’re really seeing a surge so ideally folks would get their booster now before that happens here.” People who want to schedule a booster dose or get vaccinated for the first time can do so at vaccinate.virginia.gov. There are plenty of appointments and shots.“We have not seen long waits for booster doses here at the medical center,” Dr. Sifri said. “Those are available. In addition there is the availability of getting booster vaccines through local pharmacies and the Blue Ridge Health District.”Since November 6, over 4,674 children between the ages of 5 and 11 have been vaccinated, or around 25 percent of the eligible population. Sage Smith disappearanceToday marks nine years since Sage Smith disappeared, having last been seen in the 500 block of West Main Street. The Charlottesville Police Department put out a release this morning stating they are still seeking the whereabouts of Erik McFadden, calling him a critical person of interest in the case. The two had been expected to meet the night of November 20, 2012, but Smith has not been heard from since. McFadden is believed to have left town rather than speak to the police. “Smith was a beloved family member and friend to many in the Charlottesville and LGBTQ+ communities,” the release reads. “Although [nne] years have passed, CPD is hopeful with the help of the media and continued public interest, we can finally solve this case and bring closure to a family and community that continues to experience anguish.” A missing persons report was filed for McFadden in June 2019 but multiple leads have not turned up any further developments. For more information, take a look at the release. Charlottesville personnel updateThe city has hired a Minority Business Development Coordinator. Ajoni Wynn-Floyd will take the position within the city’s Economic Development Department. The Minority Business Program was created in 2018 to assist qualified businesses with one-on-one business consulting, start-up assistance, and help registering to be vendors for state and local government. “The program is focused on increasing the number of minority- and woman-owned businesses that are registered vendors with the City and to encourage more City spending with such businesses,” reads the intake form on the city’s website.Wynn-Floyd has worked with the Latino Student Alliance and the Diversity Awareness Program board. Earlier this month, the city’s Tree Commission learned of the resignation of Mike Ronayne, the city’s urban forester. He served in the position for five years. The position has not yet been advertised on the Charlottesville jobs board as of Friday afternoon. At that November 2 meeting, Tree Commission chair Brian Menard said the city must demonstrate support for urban forestry.“We need to have more resources, not just financially, but we need more resources in terms of hands that can do this work and support this work,” Menard said. “We recognize that this has not been an ordinary 18 months but even before then it was clear that there’s just a lot that’s put on one person,” Menard said. Map-drawers selectedThe Virginia Supreme Court has appointed two special masters to complete the process of redistricting maps for the General Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives. Sean P. Trende and Bernard F. Grofman are the selected candidates. “Though each was nominated by legislative leaders of a particular political party, the Nominees… shall serve as officers of the Court in a quasi-judicial capacity,” reads the appointment order made Friday. The pair will work on a single map and have 30 days to complete their work. According to the order, Trende and Grofman must resolve differences in good-faith and are not permitted to consult with anyone except for designated staff at the Supreme Court and the Virginia Division of Legislative Services. They are directed to take into account the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Voting Rights Act. “In short, the Court expects to receive from its Special Masters redistricting maps that have been drafted using factors that are fully compliant with constitutional and statutory law applied in an apolitical and nonpartisan manner,” reads the order. Trende was nominated by Republicans and is a senior elections analyst with Real Clear Politics. Grofman is a political science professor at the University of California at Irvine. Crozet updateA month has passed since the Albemarle Board of Supervisors adopted an update of the Crozet Master Plan, with some land use aspects included over the wishes of some members of the Crozet Community Advisory Committee. For a good summary of what happened on October 20, read Allison Wrabel’s story in the October 21 Daily Progress. Or Lisa Martin’s story in the November 5 Crozet Gazette. On November 10, the Crozet CAC had the opportunity to talk about the plan. Chair Allie Pesch didn’t have anything prepared, and neither had Planning Manager Rachel Falkenstein. The Albemarle Planning Commission had recommended removing the Middle Density Residential designation from a portion of downtown Crozet, but there were four votes on the Board of Supervisors to move forward. White Hall District Supervisor Ann Mallek ended up voting with that majority on the eventual 5 to 1 vote in support of the plan’s update.“I should have done it differently,” Mallek said. “I should have made the motion I was going to make that adopted the Planning Commission’s route and if that had been voted down we would have been much more clear to the membership in the community what was going on.” Meetings in Albemarle are still virtual due to the pandemic and Mallek said the logistics of getting that motion moved forward were difficult to accomplish over Zoom. She acknowledged that many landowners in Crozet are concerned about the increased density. Many CAC members thought their concerns were too easily dismissed.“I found a fair amount of pretty serious community input ignored at points and I feel that ever since the state abolished the ability to negotiate proffers, developers kind of trump most of the decisions,” said Brian Day.Day referred to legislation in 2016 that rendered invalid an Albemarle policy that required a cash payment from developers for every new unit authorized by a rezoning. Proffers are still legal if they are deemed reasonable and contribute to the direct impact of a development. However, the 2016 legislation ushered a cooling off point where localities were hesitant to even discuss the issue. This past week, for instance, representatives of Greystar Development said they would pay a proportional amount toward upgrades on Old Ivy Road. Michael Monaco, a new member of the CAC, said he felt public input had to be broadened in range. He said Crozet needs more housing and more entry-level jobs so young people can stay.“I think any process that is guided mostly by homeowners is going to be guided mostly by the financial interests of homeowners, consciously or not,” Monaco said. “Any attempt to counter that would be wise.” Kostas Alibertis is on his second term on the CAC. “I think the struggle and the challenge that we had here was the vision of the county versus the vision of the community and I think we’ll always have that unless there is some delineation of where those lines are, and I think that’s what led to all of this frustration,” Alibertis said. Shawn Bird said the process was hurt by a lack of in-person community engagement meetings due to the pandemic.“If you remember those meetings we had at the high school, I thought there was really strong turn out, I thought there were people energized by the process, we had a certain momentum behind it,” Bird said. “I saw new people coming out to those things and then COVID hit and we all had to jump on our computers and it just changed the whole dynamic.”During the process, the CAC took votes indicating a majority were not in favor of the middle density residential category. Those votes are not binding and are only symbolic, but Bird defended the practice as well a 2017 survey (as published in the Crozet Gazette),“I think the powers that be need to know was this issue 13 to 2, or 8 to 7, by the CCAC?” Bird said. “I think you need to quantify to some degree where the citizens fall on particular issues. In my mind, that’s what makes a survey much more powerful to some degree than anecdotal one-offs by people who have the time to jump on these cools and may have the loudest voices.”Allie Pesch said the master plan update was revision and not a rewrite. She said an analysis of the update should look at whether existing goals are being met.“We’ve wanted to increase affordable housing for a while and the solution seemed to be just to increase density and not really look at how that has or hasn’t worked in the existing plan,” Pesch said. Marc McKenney is in his first term on the CAC and he said many are concerned that Albemarle has not made the investments to support that density. “There’s been massive growth in Crozet in the past two decades,” McKenney said. “Population went from 2,200 in 2000, to 5,500 in 2010, to 9,500 or 9,200 a decade later. (TRIM) If we cannot show citizens what’s actually been delivered from an infrastructure perspective, I guarantee you there will be a complete loss in faith by citizens to the county that they have their best interest in providing sidewalks, and road repairs, and bridges.”Some of the current projects in the planning process are:$1.5 million in improvement to the Square anticipated to be completed in May 2023 (page 26 here), $21.25 million expansion of Crozet Elementary School expected to be completed in August 2022 (page 28 here)Sidewalk improvements on U.S. 250 West from Cory Farms to Cloverlawn (page 44)A revenue-sharing application was submitted to the Virginia Department of Transportation on October 1 to complete Eastern Avenue across Lickinghole Creek to Cory Farms Road (Albemarle transportation priority #8)Improvements at Crozet Avenue and U.S. 250 West are being considered for Smart Scale recommendations in 2022 (Albemarle transportation priority #21) The adoption of the Crozet Master Plan happened just before the first phase of the county’s Comprehensive Plan review got underway. A public kickoff meeting will take place in January. Supervisor Mallek urged members of the CAC to become engaged in that process to ensure that Crozet’s voice can be heard.“While people may feel discouraged about particular outcomes in our process, we all need to be keeping our eyes on this other prize going forward because from natural resource planning to historic preservation to climate change to all slews of things, that is the core book that the Board and the staff refer to and this is our chance to make sure that our local words are maintained,” Mallek said. One of the items to be discussed during the Comp Plan review will be the county’s growth management policy. Thanks to Ting for their support in helping this program be produced each day. Alex was raised by his mom in San Francisco. She was a fine art painter and art has always been a part of his family. So he's always drawn since his was a little kid. He watched late night monster movies and scoured the local news stand for every magazine on movies he could find. In school he and a friend made stop motion animated films of their own inspired by Ray Harryhausen. He saw a presentation by Linwood Dunn at the SFMOMA and it set his trajectory for the future. Alex attended CCAC in Oakland for college and focused on illustration and graphic design. He freelanced for several years after school working as a graphic designer just as things were moving from analog techniques to digital. A gig working for a company in the South Bay doing multimedia presentations led to work doing a kind of story boarding and animation combining several of his skills and connecting him to working in the digital space. Alex moved onto another company and became and art director and eventually a manager/team leader working on multi-media “edu-tainment” projects. He was leaning new things everyday and building a set of skills that he'd use for years to come. A chance meeting at an art supply store with another art director Michael Brumsfeld from Colossal Pictures eventually led to a job at ILM. Alex worked as designer and visual effects art director on multiple films at ILM including; Star Wars: Special Editions, Saving Private Ryan, The Mummy, Mission to Mars, Minority Report, among others. After eight years Alex left in 2004 to work in games at Electronic Arts in London. Today he continues to work in games. Alex is a great artist, a kind human, and thoughtfully shares his journey. It was great fun to catch up with him and hear his story.

Eddie Colla is a street artist, curator and photographer based in Oakland, Ca. However, given his love and need for travel, you could possibly say he’s based out of anywhere. His work is a synthesis of street art, collage, assemblage and video that crosses and transcends the barriers between the gallery walls and the public space. Mixing photography, paint, wheatpaste and other materials he picked up working odd jobs in his beginnings, Eddie’s work is a foreboding exploration, and reminder, of possible futures...even more so today. In this episode, we talk about his beginnings in New Jersey and eventually enrolling in SVA. His then move from to California to attend CCAC in Oakland. We also touch upon his work in the advertising world as a photographer, the transition into his iconic work “Atavisms”, the inexplicable life changes that lead to his love for Paris and much more In closing we talk about the upcoming online group show he organized with the help of Frederic Steimer, ‘Carpe Diem.’ On Saturday, June 20th. Eddie attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and graduated from the California College of Arts with a BFA in photography/interdisciplinary fine arts in 1991. He began his artistic career as a photographer, working first for the New York Times and later countless magazines, record labels and ad agencies. 15 years later he has morphed into one who counters the all-pervasive nature of commercialism in public spaces. Since 2005, his wheat-pastes and stencils can be found throughout public spaces in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Miami. Eddie's work first began to garner national recognition when his street art began incorporating images of Barack Obama throughout the 2008 Presidential election. His growing popularity landed him attention on internet blogs, features in six published books, and participation in the "Manifest Hope Art Gallery" shows at the 2008 Democratic National Convention and at the Presidential Inauguration in Washington D.C. His designs have been transformed many times over, from stickers, album and magazine covers. Heidi Wastweet is an award-winning medallic artist. Over the course of her 30-year career, she has designed more than 1,000 coins, medals, and tokens, mostly for private mints. From 2010 to 2018, Heidi sat on the CCAC, where she, along with other members of the art community and general public, deliberated on the direction of American coin and medal design. If you have bought a coin or medal from the U.S. Mint made within the past eight years, odds are that Heidi had a role to play in the design process. What is the state of coin and medal design in America and what can be done to improve upon it? I ask these questions and more, this week on the CoinWeek Podcast. *** The CoinWeek podcast has a new sponsor! If you have paid attention to the rare coin market or read our analysis of major coin sales in recent years, you know how CAC has changed the landscape for certified coins. Folks, its true that he grading services do fantastic service for our hobby... but in a market where originality, quality, and strict grading standards matters you need to know that the coins you by meet a higher standard. And coins certified by CAC have consistently brought more money at auction than coins without. So before you buy, do your homework and look for the green bean on the holder. It could make all of the difference between buying a coin that will hold its value, or even make you money, and buying a coin that might have problems not immediately evident with the grade. In this episode I interview Myofascial Specialist, David Lesondak about the mysterious organ of structure called fascia and its relation to human performance. This is a must listen to interview for athletes: David talks about integrating fourth pillar into any, three pillar, sports science training program, for any type of sport. The current three pillars are cardiovascular training, strength training, neuromuscular training, and the fourth pillar- fascial fitness training- for greater resiliency, and greater movement economy with less effort by way of improving the elastic rebounding capability of the fascial system. Resource links below the bio. A brief bio: David Lesondak, KMI,CSI, LMT, David is the CIO (Chief Instigation Officer) of fascialconnections.com. He is a member of the Allied Health Professional Staff in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. David is a Myofascial Specialist and Structural Integrator at UPMC’s Center for Integrative Medicine in Shadyside. He also maintains a private practice at AmeriFit in Greentree. He specializes in chronic pain, pre and post-surgical issues, physical performance enhancement and treatment for those suffering with cancer. David has been in private practice in the greater Pittsburgh area since 1992. He teaches and lectures internationally about all things fascia. David attended CCAC and accomplished his formative training in Structural Integration at Kinesis, under the tutelage of their director, Tom Myers. He went on to serve for 5 years as an associate faculty member and media consultant/producer for Kinesis. He continues to advance his craft through continuing education for advanced SI approaches and visceral manipulation at the Barral Institute. Leveraging his previous life in the video arts, in 2009 David released Anatomy Trains Revealed, a 3 DVD set that explores fascial anatomy and took 5 years to complete. The success of that project (co-produced with Tom Myers) led to a continuing collaboration with Robert Schleip and the Fascia Research Project at Ulm University, Germany – their most recent release being “Fascia & Sports Medicine”. He filmed and produced the proceedings of the Third International Fascia Research Congress in 2012 and has been invited to reprise his role at the next Congress in 2015. His educational programs can be found at fasciadvds.com. David’s video company, Singing Cowboy Productions, specializes in crafting educational videos for all things fascia but also produces music, promotional and public service spots. You can see some of that work here. Previously he enjoyed careers in television, advertising, the funeral arts and a 10 year stint on public radio with WYEP. Friday, February 1, 2013--The Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organized a briefing on international efforts to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) to provide near-term climate change mitigation and improve public health and food security. These pollutants - including black carbon (soot), methane, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) - have relatively short atmospheric lifetimes but a sizeable warming impact on the climate, particularly in the Arctic and other vulnerable regions. For example, a recent major study found black carbon to have a total warming impact roughly equal to two-thirds that of carbon dioxide. Paired with global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, action on SLCPs offers important opportunities to slow climate change over the next several decades. To coordinate a collective international effort to reduce emissions, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) was launched in February 2012 by UNEP and the governments of Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden and the United States. Twenty-one additional countries and 22 additional non-state partners have since joined the Coalition, and the G8 has pledged its support. The CCAC seeks to improve scientific understanding, promote best practices, and enhance and develop emissions reduction strategies at the national and regional levels (learn more at www.unep.org/ccac). The briefing described the primary sources of SLCP emissions, outlined the regional and global impacts of SLCPs on the climate and public health, and provided an update on the progress of the CCAC as it nears its one-year anniversary. The briefing also examined technologies and win-win policy opportunities to reduce SLCP emissions, discussed the vast and immediate benefits of doing so, and explored how the CCAC represents a new frontier for international cooperation on climate action.

The Grey Bruce Health Network began developing regional clinical pathways in 2002 (Meleskie and Wilson 2003). The Total Hip Replacement (THR) pathway was one of the first developed. A three-stage pathway, the THR pathway has an acute stage for the first five hospital days following surgery, a post-acute stage for convalescent care in hospital and a community-care stage for community physiotherapy after hospital discharge. Pilot results (119 patients) have shown an increase in information transfer, streamlining care and increasing efficiencies (capacity savings of over $92,000), increased usage of best practices, more consistent care across the continuum of care and decreased length of stay (by 1.55 days) at the regional hospital centre.
Lynn is starting off the show today talking to Marilyn Caye about her class 'How to Lose your Pittsburgh Accent' which will be taught in November at CCAC.
