S3E4 Kaiju Unite w/ Son of Godzilla (1967) and Destroy All Monsters (1968) With GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE upon us, we salute the Big G himself, GODZILLA, with a pair of his movies made a year apart from each other, that show his tremendous range. First, the radioactive mutant dinosaur tackles family comedy in SON OF GODZILLA (1967), the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" of kaiju movies. But unlike so many movie and TV single dads, Godzilla has to rear young Minya while battling overgrown mantises and a freaky-assed spider called Kumonga. I'd like to see Dustin Hoffman do that in "Kramer vs. Kramer!" Then, Godzilla shows his serious side in the greatest monster mash of them all, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS! All the kaiju are here--Godzilla! Rodan! Mother! Gorosaurus! Anguirus! Ghidorah!--and they are smashing cities! This was supposed to be the final Godzilla film, so GOJIRA (1954) director and OMFYS GOAT Ishiro Honda directs it with a poignant tone. Movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz was booked for this episode but he had to reschedule. We hope to have him back soon. Greg Franklin and Philena Franklin also couldn't make it so it's just Bob and Cory this time, and they still managed to gab for over an hour. AMAZING! Besides the Kaiju Classics, Bob and Cory discuss the new remake of ROAD HOUSE with Jake Gyllenhaal. One host is Yeh, and the other is Meh on Prime's big streaming release, so it's like Siskel and Ebert for people who smoked too much Super Silver Haze. Alan K. Rode is a noted biographer and film scholar. He is the executive producer and host of the long-running Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival. Alan is also the co-programmer and co-host of the Noir City Hollywood and Chicago film festivals. He's a charter director and treasurer of the Film Noir Foundation, which is dedicated to resurrecting lost films from the classic noir era.  He's also a frequent presenter at the TCM Classic Film Festival and other events.Alan's book, Michael Curtiz: A Life in Film, was published in 2017 to rave reviews.  In April 2018, Alan co-hosted an in-depth Michael Curtiz spotlight series on Turner Classic Movies with TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. He also authored Charles McGraw: Film Noir Tough Guy. And he's published essays and profiles for a variety of publications including his blog, One Way Street. Alan writes and narrates track commentaries while producing and appearing in documentaries on numerous Blu ray releases of classic films, including the Michael Curtiz documentary featurette on The Mystery of the Wax Museum and Doctor X. He has co-produced such Film Noir Foundation film restorations to Blu-ray as Too Late for Tears, Trapped, Los Tallos Amargos, and Repeat Performance, which includes a documentary feature on the history of Eagle Lion Films that he wrote and narrated.  Scheduled for 2022 is Flicker Alley's release of The Guilty and High Tide.Alan's latest book about the classic noir western Blood on the Moon will be published in 2022. Alan K. Today on FilmWeek, Larry Mantle and KPCC film critics Lael Loewenstein and Wade Major review this weekend’s new movie releases. We also discuss the fun and fascinating history behind film noir, with Eddie Muller the host of the Noir City: Hollywood film festival.

NOIR CITY Hollywood showrunner Brian Light joins us to discuss the festival's 20th edition, as well as some of his articles for the NOIR CITY e-magazine. We start with some behind-the-scenes details of how the festival is organized, and we delve into some of this year's screenings: James Ellroy appearing with LA Confidential to receive the FNF's "Modern Noir Master" award; a triple bill from director Joseph Losey; and a pair of 1950s rarities, The Turning Point and The Scarlet Hour, in newly restored presentations courtesy of Paramount Pictures (1:50). Brian's numerous "Book vs Film" articles for NOIR CITY include "La Chienne vs Scarlet Street," a comparison of the 1920s French novel with two film versions, Jean Renoir's French adaptation and Fritz Lang's noir classic Scarlet Street. Brian details how hard it was to track down an English translation of the novel, as well as the differences between the two films in their overall tone and endings (17:30). "Scoring Evil: The Henry Mancini Touch" dives into one of classic noir's best soundtracks. We discuss Orson Welles' unique concept for scoring the 1958 film Touch Of Evil, plus Henry Mancini assembling top jazz musicians to record his ground-breaking compositions.
