S3E4 Kaiju Unite w/ Son of Godzilla (1967) and Destroy All Monsters (1968) With GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE upon us, we salute the Big G himself, GODZILLA, with a pair of his movies made a year apart from each other, that show his tremendous range. First, the radioactive mutant dinosaur tackles family comedy in SON OF GODZILLA (1967), the "Courtship of Eddie's Father" of kaiju movies. But unlike so many movie and TV single dads, Godzilla has to rear young Minya while battling overgrown mantises and a freaky-assed spider called Kumonga. I'd like to see Dustin Hoffman do that in "Kramer vs. Kramer!" Then, Godzilla shows his serious side in the greatest monster mash of them all, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS! All the kaiju are here--Godzilla! Rodan! Mother! Gorosaurus! Anguirus! Ghidorah!--and they are smashing cities! This was supposed to be the final Godzilla film, so GOJIRA (1954) director and OMFYS GOAT Ishiro Honda directs it with a poignant tone. Movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz was booked for this episode but he had to reschedule. We hope to have him back soon. Greg Franklin and Philena Franklin also couldn't make it so it's just Bob and Cory this time, and they still managed to gab for over an hour. AMAZING! Besides the Kaiju Classics, Bob and Cory discuss the new remake of ROAD HOUSE with Jake Gyllenhaal. One host is Yeh, and the other is Meh on Prime's big streaming release, so it's like Siskel and Ebert for people who smoked too much Super Silver Haze. They also talk about the Netflix documentary AMERICAN CONSPIRACY: THE OCTOPUS MURDERS and what to see THIS SATURDAY at Noir City Hollywood. There's something for everyone here. SON OF GODZILLA and DESTROY ALL MONSTERS are streaming on Criterion Channel, Max, Tubi, and the Pluto Godzilla channel. There are lots of bonkers classics on Criterion Channel right now and we wanted to pair pot with them before they show up on that "Leaving Criterion Channel" list in an episode we call "WHAT THE FUCK CRITERION." First up is THE DEVILS (1971), Ken Russell's masterpiece of blasphemy, demonic possession and religious persecution in 17th Century France. Oliver Reed is Urbain Grandier, an impossibly hot Jesuit priest, and Vanessa Redgrave is Sister Jeanne des Anges, a delusional nun who claims that she is possessed by the devil, and that devil works with Grandier. It's a gut-wrenching work that may be Russell's best. Continuing with the theme, our second feature is THE UNKNOWN (1927), a bizarre circus tale from FREAKS director Tod Browning. Lon Chaney, Sr. is Alonso, an armless knife-thrower who longs for Nanon, his fetching assistant played by a very young Joan Crawford. Nanon can't bear to be held in men's arms, so she should be perfect for Alonso, right? Well, all is not what it seems in this carnie world of deception, which motivates Alonso to go to sadistic and even masochistic extremes. What the fuck Criterion??? Man, we could've added a third feature here because PEEPING TOM is on the channel as well. Hopefully we'll get to that one soon. In the opener, Cory asks if it's even possible to create a cult movie these days where streaming has flattened everything out. Greg, Bob, and Philena all hold out hope. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Neil Riebe makes a dangerous journey to Hong Kong to join Nate for another “Godzilla Redux” with Son of Godzilla. This film was made in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, and along with King Kong Escapes, was Toho's big contribution to it. The studio's “B team,” led by director Jun Fukuda, returned to helm this island adventure…that infamously introduced fans to “the Jar Jar Binks of the Godzilla franchise,” Minilla (aka Minya). But it also has some impressive insect kaiju. Believe it or not, this was made as a date movie…for very Japanese reasons! All this and more in the latest MIFV! This week, two exciting entrants in the monster canon join the fray. First, it's everyone's favorite crustacean Kaiju, the indomitable and very crabby Ebirah, the horror of the deep! It's a surf-rock camp fantasy in the 1966 monster movie, wherein Godzilla, Mothra, and Ebirah square off, and a lot of peculiar Kaiju hijinks ensue. The fun does not end here, as Godzilla's paternal instincts are given the spotlight with the inclusion of Minya, a debatably cute rapscallion who has won our hearts. Is Ebirah's sea-bound mettle enough to menace his way up the rankings? Is Minya's odd cuteness enough to secure a place among the Gods of Kaiju? Our team of experts have all the answers.
Could you pass the turkey, and slather it with some kaiju please? Thanksgiving means monster mayhem here at TMI, and this year we keep it in the family with Son of Godzilla, followed by Son of Kong! Nick, Andrew, Evan, and Parker discuss the sometimes-maligned, sometimes-beloved showa classic Son of Godzilla! Plus the perils of international communication, kaiju as both characters and natural disasters, the most Minilla-relevant grocery chain, The Three Godzillas (move over, DC comics!), and a surprising number of comparisons to the original Mothra, and vs. SpaceGodzilla!
Christine Krawczyk joins Jeremy for SON OF GODZILLA and Jeremy gets a lesson from a lifelong Godzilla fan, while hardly being able to contain himself over the joy that Mini-zilla brings him.
Joel and Andy find a silver lining in Son of Godzilla, the 1967 Japanese kaiju film that sees Godzilla forgo smashing tall buildings in order to focus on raising his son, Minilla, who has a knack for getting into life-threatening situations.
There comes a time, when you have to stop being a giant monster rampaging through Tokyo and become a family man. Godzilla has fully shifted from symbolism of destruction to father figure, as Manilla makes their debut. Ben and Tyler find themselves on another mysterious jungle that is trying to solve climate change?! Also arachnophobes beware! This movie aint for the faint of heart.

It's the movie Chris has been waiting for: Son of Godzilla, Minilla's infamous introduction into the Godzilla universe. The apostles find a lot to discuss this time around, between Godzilla's parenting skills, creation care and eschatology, along with the philosophical concept of contractualism. Time to go back to the island, Jack Shephard!Watch Son of Godzilla on Archive.org here.
Following the random selection and then explicit demand of AJ from the Cult Popture podcast, we’re dipping back into the Showa-era Godzilla films, with Jun Fukuda’s Son of Godzilla. We’re joined by longtime friend and Godzilla-expert Angie to help us make sense of this eighth(!) entry into the franchise. This time, there’s a baby Godzilla, a remote weather experiment station on a pacific island, a lady who has been hiding in a cave for some reason, and zero stakes. So it’s a pretty distant echo of the original 1954 masterpiece. Still, there’s something in it’s 60s color palette, modified environmental message, and Gilligan’s Island-like hijinks that make it a must-watch for the Godzilla completist. If you’d like to watch ahead for next week’s film, we will be discussing and reviewing Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (1940) with Kevin Allison (of Risk! The Podcast and The State).

Did Eric and Alex learn a thing or two about parenting from Godzilla? Or is he more like a drunk Uncle? Tune in to Monsters vs Men to find out. P.S. Ironically there's no Theometer this week, but I put a different bit up instead.
The Godzillavangelists really stick their neck out this time, when they go to bat against the fandom and defend Son of Godzilla! Or at least, Ryan does, while Sam has a love affair with a striped shed and Joanna questions Godzilla's parenting techniques. Ryan's own sister Lauren visits the podcast to share some childhood memories and organize a slash-and-burn offense to protect Minya's honor. If you wanted to know more about the weirdo Sargent household, you'll get your chance on this ep. Next episode is ACTUALLY a double feature of Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster! How it got mixed up is a complicated and boring story. It's a HEAT WAVE! Or perhaps a sudden SNOW STORM instead?! On this summertime episode of Earth Destruction Directive, we are heading out to the isolated tropical paradise (yeah right...) Solgell Island as we take a look at Son Of Godzilla! When weather experiments go awry on a Pacific island, the team there soon find themselves surrounded by monsters great and small, including Godzilla's never-before-mentioned kid! Then we shift from the South Seas to Midtown as Godzilla rampages through the American Museum of Natural History -- so somebody call the Fantastic Four! Did somebody say "It's Clobberin' Time"? For a special Father's Day episode, Byrd and Matt are joined by guest host Tom to watch 1967's Son of Godzilla! Its time to visit yet another island, filled with mutated Mantis, dreams of Weather Machines, and an egg that will hatch a face only a Godzilla could love in "Son of Godzilla."
Episode 65 checks in with your kind hosts after a snowy break. Jolyon kicked off the New Year with Bruce Lee, while Richard watched Citizen Kane, which is the Citizen Kane of movies. Will hung out with Turkish soap operas, as you might expect. He’s the same guy who wants to edit the shark out of Jaws 2. Then, the episode takes you across time and space, traveling to Monster Island in 1967. You know who else is traveling there? Godzilla, that’s who! He’s been telepathically summoned by his as-yet unhatched son(?) called Minya. Or Minilla. But not Godzooky. THAT was Godzilla’s nephew and was only in cartoons. You know, like Scrappy Doo! Anyhoo, Godzilla teaches that little smoke ring puffing lizard to breathe fire in the same way John Wayne teaches kids to swim. This is an important life lesson when you soon have giant insects to fight! The people in Godzilla movies may be less surprised to see Godzilla than Richard is to see a cardinal, but they usually have scientists around to explain things. Still, no one could explain the crate full of missing monster suits back in the 50’s! Even though this entry into the pantheon of Godzilla movies is more light-hearted than previous ones, it still took three different Godzilla suits and a lot of puppeteers to pull it off, so respect! Newcomers to films about the big guy be warned- he only gets cuter after this one! And though a cute Godzilla is easier to find than a Nirvana/Blue Oyster Cult mashup, stay with the episode past sign-off for a little treat! Oh, and... Happiness to you, Sentimental Boy! Ross is back on the podcast as he and Steven navigate their way to Solgell Island, following the signal of a mysterious brainwave. What awaits them? Extreme weather, giant invertebrates, and the heir to the King of the Monsters - it can only be Son of Godzilla on the Kaijusaurus Podcast. Show Notes - Thanks to @nuclear-warrior, @bretlowski, @mekagojira3k, and @bluskreem for submitting their thoughts and opinions on the film. - …and apologies to @blackeye15, whose comments I forgot to read pout on the episode. Their submission follows: Son of Godzilla is on the lower end of Godzilla movies for me. Like Ebirah I appreciate a few things it does better as an adult but I think it’s still a weaker film. I have never been a big fan of Minya, I think we should keep him out, I do love Godzilla Jr. to be clear. I will admit I love the fire-breathing lesson scene and the final shot of Godzilla holding Minya. Other than that can’t really stand the little creature. I always figured Godzilla was adopting the little radioactive toad so I wondered why everyone was arguing about it over the internet when I was a kid. Apparently Nakajima considers Godzilla female which I’m totally okay with to be honest A creature named Godzilla is most certainly one of the few beefs I have with 1998’s Godzilla. Here’s the bits I’ve always loved as a kid: Kamacuras. It was super fun giving Godzilla a bunch of mook monsters he can easily tear apart rather than one equally strong monster. I keep hoping some day Toho has Godzilla fighting a swarm of them. I now appreciate the complicated marionette systems used for Kamacuras and Kumonga. None the less I think the end fight just drags on far too long at a poor pace. Kumonga shoots web! Godzilla shoots fire! Not very effective. Now Kumonga is on Godzilla! Now…nothing is happening until Minya shows up, though combo-attack was cool. It’s not really a bad Godzilla movie, it really isn’t ,it’s just kind of middle of the road and I’m very Minya biased. My favorite shot is when the Kamacuras are marching past the tower and two people are hiding, fantastic shot! I think Ebirah was more my ideal Godzilla on a jungle island adventure. - Due to the increasing length of the episodes, we will be curbing the length of listener submissions from here on out. More information on this will follow soon.
