Writer and critic Matthew Specktor, author of the new novel The Golden Hour, joins hosts Harry and Daniel to discuss Joseph Losey's haunting 1976 film Mr. Klein. Set in Nazi-occupied France during the lead-up to the infamous Vel d'Hiv roundup of Jews, the film follows Alain Delon as an art dealer who becomes ensnared in a chilling case of mistaken identity with another man who may be Jewish—and may not even exist.Together, they first talk about real life cases of mistaken identities of their lives. Then the trio move on to explore the film's Kafkaesque tone, its eerie resonance with contemporary concerns about identity and complicity, and how Mr. Klein confronts France's legacy of antisemitism and historical erasure. With the episode's release coinciding with Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, we hope you'll find added connection to the day and think of those lost.Purchase Matthew's new book, The Golden HourFollow Matthew Specktor on InstagramMr Klein Movie TrailerMr Klein on IMDbConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpodRead less

This week we are celebrating the diva that was Elizabeth Taylor! Sakana joins us once again to celebrate the work of this prodigious star - with a close look at two of her most bizarre and off-kilter projects: the Italian psychosexual thriller, Identikit (1974), directed by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, and Tennessee Williams' Boom! (1968), directed by Joseph Losey. Macrobiotic orgasms, bomb attacks on the streets of Rome, Richard Burton getting attacked by dogs and then sulking about not being fed enough, plus cameo appearances by Andy Warhol and Noël Coward. It's a wild ride, folks. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for both films, so if you haven't seen them before you listen, you can nevertheless avoid spoilers for Identikit by skipping ahead to the 1:25:00 mark, and for Boom! by skipping ahead to 2:08:02. We discuss the films' historical context, as well as the non-political pleasures they have to offer.   Time Codes: 0h 00m 25s:      The RKO Story summary of 1948 at Radio-Keith-Orpheum 0h 05m 08s:      BERLIN EXPRESS [dir. Episode Description:Welcome back, Queernundrum listeners! Today, we're bringing you a special episode that highlights two incredible individuals from different eras, both of whom have left their marks on queer culture and art: Chappell Roan, the rising pop sensation with a flair for queer anthems, and Dirk Bogarde, a pioneering actor who used his career to challenge societal norms and expand LGBTQ+ representation in cinema. Though their stories come from different corners of the entertainment world, both are connected by their courage, creativity, and commitment to authenticity.Grab your favorite beverage, get comfy, and let's dive into the bold beats and boundary-breaking moments of Chappell Roan and Dirk Bogarde!Episode Highlights:Chappell Roan – Queer Pop Star in the Making:We explore Chappell Roan's rise as an independent queer pop artist and how she's used her platform to celebrate LGBTQ+ liberation. Her breakout single "Pink Pony Club" has become an anthem of queer joy and self-discovery, offering a safe space for young LGBTQ+ individuals to feel seen and accepted.Discuss her commitment to creating safe, inclusive environments at her concerts, where fans are encouraged to celebrate their identities and feel empowered.Highlight Chappell's activism and philanthropy, including her collaborations with LGBTQ+ organizations like The Trevor Project, focusing on mental health and queer youth support.Dirk Bogarde – The Original Boundary Breaker:We dive deep into Dirk Bogarde's extraordinary career, from his early roles in British comedies to his groundbreaking performances in socially conscious films like Victim (1961).Bogarde's portrayal of a barrister blackmailed for his homosexuality in Victim was revolutionary, as it tackled LGBTQ+ issues at a time when homosexuality was still illegal in the UK.Explore his later work with directors like Joseph Losey and Luchino Visconti in films such as The Servant and Death in Venice, where he continued to push boundaries around sexuality, class, and human desire.Discuss how Bogarde's private life, including his close relationship with Anthony Forwood, reflected the complexities of being a gay man in a less accepting era, and how his courage paved the way for more honest portrayals of LGBTQ+ lives in cinema.Call to Action:Engage with Us: What do Chappell Roan and Dirk Bogarde mean to you as trailblazers for queer representation in their respective fields? Vintage Sand Episode 54: Director's Cut: Joseph Losey

Vintage Sand

Elegant. That was the adjective used by Team Vintage Sand's own Michael Edmund to describe why the films of Joseph Losey are so important to him, and why he has been such a huge fan of Losey's for nearly all of his film-going life. Losey's was a name that seemed to keep popping up in a wide variety of contexts over the course of the podcast, so, after many delays, we are proud to present Episode 54—Director's Cut: Joseph Losey. Losey's is a unique career in the sense that it really was two distinct careers. After growing up in a life of privilege in Wisconsin (where he was a high school classmate of another pretty good director, Nicholas Ray) and an education at Harvard and Dartmouth, Losey made his way to Hollywood and directed a couple of interesting, low-budget films. Among these were the stilted but prescient "The Boy with Green Hair" (1948), and the rather senseless remake of Lang's "M" (1951), the latter replete with awful soundtrack music and LA sunshine. One possible reason that Losey might have gotten involved with this misguided effort might have been to give actors (Luther Adler, Martin Gabel) and other creatives (screenwriter Waldo Salt), who had been or were about to be blacklisted, a shot at getting some work. Losey himself, an unapologetic member of the Communist Party and an important creative associate of Bertolt Brecht, knew that when Brecht was called before HUAC, it was only a matter of time before he would meet the same fate. So before he could be summoned, he fled to London, and never again worked in the United States for the remaining three decades of his life. He began his English period with some low budget films, some of which, like 1954's "The Sleeping Tiger", still hold some interest. It was during this period, however, that he met two men who were going to help him create the reputation that he still carries to this day, that of a director of great style whose films, not surprisingly given his own life experience, were always political without ever dealing directly with politics: the actor Dirk Bogarde, and the legendary playwright Harold Pinter. Their first work together, 1963's "The Servant", is generally regarded as Losey's masterpiece. It is an absolute evisceration of a rotting class system that has yet to realize its time has passed and that the empire on which it was founded has disintegrated. The complex, ever-changing relationship between upper class twit Tony (the wonderful James Fox) and Barrett, the manservant Tony hires (Bogarde), is cold, chilling and surprising right to the very end. Losey continued his obsession with social class in the World War I drama "King and Country" (1964), a film with a setup similar to "Paths of Glory" that in some ways is an even more powerful anti-war statement than Kubrick's film. Losey teamed up again, somewhat less successfully, with Pinter and Bogarde for 1967's "Accident", and with Pinter for one more masterpiece, 1971's "The Go-Between", a gorgeous period piece featuring pitch-perfect performances by Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, newcomer Dominic Guard as the titular young man, and especially by the never-more-luminous Julie Christie. There are no easy answers when it comes to Losey, but two things come to mind. As John notes in the episode, had Losey not fled persecution and stayed in America, he probably would have been nothing more than a more-talented-than-average studio hack. Exile turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to him, and it may be a direct result of his outsider status that Losey was able to cast an even sharper eye on the follies and perils of the dying English class system more effectively even than the great native British directors of the 1960's. Whatever your thoughts on his work, in the end, it is that aforementioned elegance and intelligence that make Losey's best films worth watching today.

It's time for another Eurospy spoof. This movie, based on the 'Modesty Blaise' comics by Peter O'Donnell, was written and directed by Joseph Losey to be 'A pop-art inspired spoof, with over-the-top set design, """Avante-garde editing""", and deliberate continuity problems'. It was nominated for a Palme d'Or at Cannes. He made a bad movie on purpose, as a joke.   Join hosts Jason, Anthony, and Tim as they discuss Joseph Losey's 1950 crime film The Lawless, an underseen and somewhat uneven example of what the filmmaker and critic Thom Andersen calls film gris, or socially conscious crime cinema during the film noir years (1940s through the 1950s). Losey was blacklisted in 1952, after his name was mentioned during the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) hearings. He subsequently relocated to London, where he had a second (and admittedly more artistically accomplished) life as a film director, collaborating, mostly notably, with the Nobel Prize–winning playwright and screenwriter, Harold Pinter.

Random movie 101 on Metacritic's all time movie list was The Servant. Directed by Joseph Losey and starring Dirk Bogarde and James Fox, this film weaves a tantalizing tale of power dynamics, class struggle, and personal obsession. A layered character study wrapped in brilliant performances, 'The Servant' remains as poignant today as it was six decades ago. On this episode of Death By DVD we've gone on holiday by mistake. The 1987 British black comedy WITHNAIL & I is discussed at length! Possibly the quintessential British movie, join THE Linus Fitness-Centre & Harry-Scott as they pour a shot of lighter fluid and get into the politics of WITHNAIL & I. Two out-of-work actors -- the anxious, luckless Marwood (Paul McGann) and his acerbic, alcoholic friend, Withnail (Richard E. Grant) -- spend their days drifting between their squalid flat, the unemployment office and the pub. When they take a holiday "by mistake" at the country house of Withnail's flamboyantly gay uncle, Monty (Richard Griffiths), they encounter the unpleasant side of the English countryside: tedium, terrifying locals and torrential rain. This is an episode you DON'T wanna miss! And remember all hairdressers are in the employment of the government. Hair are your aerials. They pick up signals from the cosmos and transmit them directly into the brain. This is the reason bald-headed men are uptight.HEY, while you're still here.. have you heard...DEATH BY DVD PRESENTS : WHO SHOT HANK? The first of its kind (On this show, at least) an all original narrative audio drama exploring the murder of this shows very host, HANK THE WORLDS GREATEST!
