Is church just a place to think about God—or are we wired to worship together? In this groundbreaking episode, theologian Dr. Josh Cockayne and developmental psychologist Dr. Gideon Salter join Dru Johnson to explore how human beings are made for joint attention, and why gathering for worship is a deeply embodied, social necessity. Drawing from their book Why We Gather, the conversation unfolds how infants develop the skill of “joint attention”—the ability to notice something with someone else—and how this same capacity is essential to biblical worship, from Genesis to Revelation. They argue that worship isn't merely cognitive or emotional—it's communal, embodied, and neurologically formative. Togetherness isn't a nice-to-have; it's the foundation of how we know God and the world. From communion rituals and infant behavior to liturgical design and online church, the episode provides a practical, psychologically grounded, and theologically rich vision of church that challenges both individualism and shallow expressions of “community.” For their book "Why We Gather," see the publisher's website here: https://www.baylorpress.com/9781481322911/why-we-gather/ We are listener supported. In Part 2 of Episode 21, I'm joined by a truly fascinating first-time guest—certified hypnotherapist Paul Salter. Paul helps us explore the power of the mind and how hypnotherapy can free us from the fear of judgment on the golf course—especially when standing on the first tee with eyes all around. Whether it's your buddies, a crowd at the club championship, or groups waiting to tee off behind you, we've all felt that pressure. Paul breaks down where that fear comes from and how he works with golfers to eliminate it for good. Then, one of my favorite people on the planet, PGA Tour legend Hal Sutton returns to the show to share updates on his latest course design, the Darmor Club outside Houston, and why—for the first time ever—he's endorsing a putter. It's not because of a paycheck. Hal explains what impressed him about Makefield Putters, their precision fitting process, and how they get the ball rolling faster and truer than nearly anything else out there. If it's good enough to go in Hal's bag, you'll want to hear why.

Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back onto the program to break down the 2019 sci-fi thriller movie Synchronic, which follows a couple New Orleans paramedics as they get caught up in the mystery surrounding a new designer drug and the reality-altering impact it's having on its users. Anthony Mackie's flair for dark comedy, puzzling out the stylistic choices for elements like nonlinear storytelling and color grading, and the theory that perhaps this film should have ran along a Steins;Gate-esque road comprise a few of the topics for this episode.Directed by Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, Synchronic stars Anthony Mackie, Jamie Dornan, Alexia Ioannides, Katie Aselton, Ramiz Monsef, Bill Oberst Jr., Carl Palmer, Betsy Holt, and Shane Brady.Spoilers start at 20:20Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastrHere's how you can learn more about Palestine and IsraelHere's how you can keep up-to-date on this genocideHere's how you can send eSIM cards to Palestinians in order to help them stay connected onlineGood Word:• Brett: Into the Badlands• Arthur: Things Will Be DifferentReach out at email2centscritic@yahoo.com if you want to recommend things to watch and read, share anecdotes, or just say hello!Be sure to subscribe, rate, and review on iTunes or any of your preferred podcasting platforms!Follow Arthur on Twitter, Goodpods, StoryGraph, Letterboxd, and TikTok: @arthur_ant18Follow Arthur on Bluesky: @arthur-ant18Follow the podcast on Twitter: @two_centscriticFollow the podcast on Instagram: @twocentscriticpodFollow Arthur on GoodreadsCheck out 2 Cents Critic Linktree

I'm not sure about you, but I did not get a lot of training in self-management when I was a graduate student (but cut me some slack... I was in an EAB program!). If you're in the same boat as I am, then you're in luck. In Session 288, I'm joined by Katie Croce and Jamie Salter, and in our conversation, they provided their unique strategies for fostering self-management using the Self and Match system. With Australia's commitment to end gender-based violence within a generation, yet concerning increases in sexual violence and domestic homicides, this timely discussion explores why traditional prevention strategies focused on changing social norms and attitudes have fallen short.Key points discussed include:The limitations of measuring prevention success through attitude surveys rather than actual reductions in violenceWhy structural interventions and accountability are essential alongside education effortsThe need to focus resources on high-risk scenarios and populations, particularly traumatized youthHow systems often fail to provide practical help when survivors, especially young people, disclose abuseThe importance of shifting from "calling out" to "calling in" approaches when addressing harmful behaviorsWhy prevention efforts must acknowledge the reality that most people have been impacted by violence rather than assuming a "clean slate"Related episodes:Season 2 Episode 12: How Coercive Control Harms Child Safety & Wellbeing: An Interview With Jess HillAdditional Resources:See What You Made Me Do: Power, Control and Domestic Abuse by Jess HillChildlight Research Centre - University of New South WalesJoin us in-person or online 18-20 March 2025 for the Safe & Together Institute Coercive Control and Children Conference. Tune in as Brett Salter (Irish Salt) jumps back into his guest chair for a breakdown of Reminiscence, the 2021 tech noir movie that feels strongly evocative of predecessors like Strange Days, Inception, and Chinatown while presenting the ways in which humanity has sunk back into old memories as an escape from the flooding and the climate change that's plaguing its near-future dystopia. The humid and melancholy atmosphere that drips off of this film, debunking a myth about the Titanic, and Hugh Jackman knowing just how to sink his teeth into characters with intense and obsessive souls stand out as a few of the topics that the hosts cover on this episode. Written and directed by Lisa Joy, Reminiscence stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson, Thandiwe Newton, Cliff Curtis, Daniel Wu, Marina de Tavira, Brett Cullen, Mojean Aria, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan, Javier Molina, Sam Medina, and Nico Parker. Today I'm sitting down with mindset coach and hypnotherapist, Paul Salter, to get his unique insights on using hypnosis to elevate your golf game. Paul defines hypnosis as “a state of deep relaxation with the intention to make positive change”. A skilled hypnotherapist can help anyone silence their inner critic, and directly connect with their subconscious mind to unlearn limiting beliefs and. This, in turn, allows new, more productive beliefs to take their place. Asked how golfers can harness the power of hypnosis to take their game to the next level, Paul reminds us that “there is no shortage of mental and emotional hazards on the course.” Coming up against those hazards triggers negative self-talk, which naturally nurtures self-destructive behaviors that ruin your chances at a great, fun round. To golfers struggling with emotional control, Paul demonstrates how hypnosis can significantly boost performance and align you with your best self. Paul goes on to explain how to cultivate a winning mindset, create confidence on demand, enhance emotional resiliency, and effortlessly find flow and fun out on the course. As a bonus, we also touch on finding success both as a golfer and as a parent–at the same time! About Paul SalterHaving personally coached over 2,500 clients, Paul Salter is an expert in helping you get out of your own way by stopping self-sabotage at the source. With an extensive background working with elite Collegiate, Professional, and Olympic athletes as a Sports Dietitian, his unique coaching system leverages 15 years of coaching with an emphasis on hypnosis, subconscious reprogramming, mindset shift training, and proven strategies to help you unstuck yourself.
