From a song about dirty little religions to a song about Joanie the Jehovah Witness Stripper, we'll be going all out from up and down with genre celebrations from the past century where music reflects the inspiration from church on Sunday mornings following the barroom sinners of Saturday night. This week's Deeper Roots takes a bit of a free form shuffle featuring Bo Diddley, The Ramones, Johnny Mercer, and a whole host of rhythm makers. Performances this morning will span some covers from Chris Smither, David Lindley and an answer song from Barbara Lewis. KOWS radio wants to thank all of you who came out to the Comedy fundraiser at Barrel Proof Lounge last week. It was a great success for us and also a validation of community radio here in the North Bay. KOWS is free form, free speech, no bull community radio; just the kind of thing we need in a country gone mad with lies, deceit and hate. There is always hope. Tune into your radio voice, any time of the day or night. We'll always welcome you.!

On this episode of One Symphony, Devin Patrick Hughes sat down with Peter Drew, a symphonist and jazz composer, to discuss his diverse life journey and his debut symphony, Reminiscence. Drew, born in Europe and later a refugee in the United States, recounted his early musical awakenings. He was first intrigued by the sound of the harmonica his stepbrother gave him. However, his musical trajectory truly shifted when, around the age of eleven, he heard Toscanini conducting Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on the radio. This experience deeply resonated with him, particularly the Ode to Joy, which became the first tune he learned on the harmonica, despite not being able to read music. Although initially captivated by classical music and Beethoven, Drew's path to becoming a composer was far from traditional. He pursued various careers, including working in film distribution, catering, teaching film studies, and being a social studies teacher. Throughout these experiences, music remained a constant presence in his life; he would often "noodle around" on the clarinet. It wasn't until later in life that he began to seriously study music, taking lessons from clarinet players and exploring jazz. He eventually started arranging music and studying composers like Sibelius. When the conversation turned to his symphony, "Reminiscence," Drew emphasized the amalgamation of his varied musical tastes and life experiences. He described his influences as a "mélange" or "stew" ranging from the American Songbook to Carl Orff, Villa-Lobos, Beethoven, Brahms, Artie Shaw, and even global music like Songs of the Auvergne, Tuvan throat singing, and Raga. He explained that his compositional process often begins with a melody he likes, perhaps played on his clarinet. He then develops this initial phrase, ensuring a natural flow between musical ideas without dissonance, remaining within the realm of Romantic Classical music. Hughes inquired about the technical aspects of translating these diverse elements into a cohesive symphony, including orchestration. Drew admitted that while he can conceive melodies, he needed assistance with the intricate instrumentation for a large symphony orchestra. He collaborated with an orchestrator to achieve the desired sonic textures, ensuring that all the instrumental parts complemented each other. Regarding the upcoming performance and recording of Reminiscence by the Boulder Symphony, Drew expressed his hope that listeners would simply "enjoy yourself" and "have fun". He doesn't expect the audience to be intimately familiar with all his diverse musical influences, but rather to connect with the music on an emotional level in the same way he was first drawn to Beethoven. Drew believes that if the music sounds and feels good, it will be enjoyable to listen to. When asked about his late entry into composing a symphony, Drew, who is approaching 90, reflected that all his life experiences, both musical and non-musical, have informed his writing. He feels that composing, rather than performing, is his true strength and passion, representing an accomplishment after a lifetime of diverse pursuits. He finds satisfaction in creating music that others enjoy listening to and playing. When pressed for a favorite movement, Drew chose the third movement for its energy and the way all the musical elements come together. While acknowledging the profound impact of Beethoven on his early musical life, he noted that Reminiscence incorporates a wider range of influences, creating a unique sonic landscape.   Thank you for joining us on One Symphony. Special thanks to Peter Drew for sharing his music and story. The Week in Westminster

Sonia Sodha of The Observer assesses the latest developments at Westminster. This week the Prime Minister kickstarted a mission to remake the state which he describes as "overstretched" and "flabby". He started by announcing he would abolish the arms-length body, NHS England. But there was ongoing disquiet in the Labour party about possible cuts to welfare spending which could be coming down the track. Sonia discusses all of this with former Conservative minister, Lord Willetts, who now chairs the Resolution Foundation, and Claire Ainsley, former director of policy for Keir Starmer. After a week of intense diplomatic manoeuvring, could a ceasefire in Ukraine be on the horizon? Sonia brings together Bronwen Maddox, director of the foreign policy think tank Chatham House, and Johnny Mercer, former Conservative MP and Minister for Veterans, who has just returned from a trip to Ukraine.Splits within Reform UK deepened this week following the party's suspension of one of its five MPs, Rupert Lowe, after allegations of bullying and threatening violence. Professor Jane Green of Oxford University analyses whether the ongoing row will halt Reform's surge in support. And, MPs who like to use TikTok are regularly flouting parliamentary rules on filming videos for social media. So do the rules need to change? Former Deputy Speaker, Nigel Evans, and Daily Mail political sketchwriter, Quentin Letts, discuss whether it's really a good idea.

The 1937 Flood Watch Podcast

We remember the night Joe Dobbs wandered into The Flood band room a couple of decades ago and said, “Hey, do you know the song ‘Satin Doll'?”Boy, was he asking the right guy. Charlie Bowen grew up in a home full of his dad's jazz records by Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington and Count Basie and his mom's Harry James and The Mills Brothers. In BowenWorld, “Satin Doll” was as much a part of the household soundtrack as anything on the radio right then.Joe didn't really know any of the tune's honored status in the jazz world. However, he was tickled by a folksy jazz rendition of it that was recorded live by fiddler Stephane Grappelli and David Grisman in 1981 and he was ready to tackle it himself. With that, the tune trotted into The Flood repertoire. Click the button below to transport back to 2011 and hear Joe with Flood Lite (Doug Chaffin on bass, Charlie on guitar) sampling the song at the start of a jam session at the Bowen House.About the SongIn 1953, Duke Ellington interrupted his long-time association with Columbia Records to sign with Capitol, thinking the upstart recording company might more effectively promote his music.Among the tunes waxed in the first Capitol session that spring was “Satin Doll,” a song Ellington had just written with his favorite collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. Duke wrote the riff sketch and Strayhorn fleshed it out with harmony and lyrics.Billy's lyrics, though, were not were not considered commercially viable, so Duke's 1953 recording was an instrumental. It was five years later when lyricist Johnny Mercer — a Capitol Records cofounder — wrote sassy new words that resulted in the song we know today. But Who WAS the Satin Doll?Strayhorn biographer David Hajdu famously advanced the notion that Billy named the song after his mother, Lillian, saying that the composer's pet name for his mom was “Satin Doll.”That's a charming story, but the Ellington family has a different take on the tale. Duke's son Mercer wrote in his 1978 memoir that he suspected the mystery woman was his dad's long-time companion, Beatrice “Evie” Ellis.Writing in Duke Ellington In Person: An Intimate Memoir, Mercer said Evie continued to believe the song was written for her. “Pop would always be leaving notes in the house addressing her affectionately as ‘Dearest Doll,' ‘Darling Doll' and so on.”Today's Flood Take on the Tune“Satin Doll” lately has started visiting the Flood band room again. It was the first tune of the evening at last week's rehearsal. Listen as Randy, Jack and Charlie start outlining the tune, laying down the rhythm and those cool chords while Danny is still setting up.You'll hear Charlie sing the first verse. By the second verse in comes Dan's beautiful guitar. In a minute, he's in full gear, and then he's soloing on two idea-filled choruses that define the entire outing.Got That SwingFinally, if you'd like to put a little more swing in your Friday thing, remember that the free Radio Floodango music streaming feature's gotcha cover. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

If we were playing television trivia and said "Sally Rogers" you would say "Rose Marie" -- this week's legend. But there was a whole lot more to Rose Marie than her role as a comedy writer on The Dick Van Dyke show. A child singing sensation, Rose Marie spent time on the vaudeville circuit, eventually making it to Broadway with a featured role in South Pacific. She frequently guested on early tv sitcoms before she landed the role of a lifetime and became part of television history along with Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Morey Amsterdam, Carl Reiner, and Richard Deacon. In particular, Rose Marie's Sally Rogers and Morey Amsterdam's Buddy Sorrell were fan favorites and appeared from time to time as a duo act. When Rose Marie died, Nell Scovell, creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, said that Rose Marie's Sally Rogers was the "patron saint of female comedy writers." Not a bad way to be remembered! As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Rose Marie? CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of alcoholism, child neglect, substance abuse, addiction. Every year at the Oscars there's a movie that stands out as the film that should be the Best Picture, just for the sheer raw power of its storytelling. This is that movie. Jack Lemmon is giving a performance for the ages, the supporting cast is rock solid, and the always contrarian Blake Edwards goes for broke. This could have easily been a melodrama, but you get the sense very quickly that everyone making this movie got the impact of what they were doing here. And that's incredible, considering there's movies that come out in 2025 that can't capture the truth of addiction like this movie. Often the first notes of the evening set the pace, the mood and the tone for the entire rehearsal. As you'll hear on this track, Danny Cox walked into last week's session ready to set the Floodometer on sizzle. And it certainly worked. The Flood has been doing this great old 1920s jazz standard for only a couple of years now, but it's already become one of the band's go-to tunes for a good time, especially whenever Danny has new musical ideas to explore.About the SongThis week's featured tune — “Am I Blue?” — has a special place at the intersection of jazz and movie histories. That's because in 1944 a sassy performance of the 1929 classic marked songwriter Hoagy Carmichael's big break in Hollywood.Hoagy is best known, of course, for performing his own compositions (“Stardust” and “Georgia on My Mind,” “Up a Lazy River,” “Memphis in June” and so many others). However, when Carmichael was cast to play the character “Cricket” in Humphrey Bogart's To Have and Have Not, director Howard Hawks wanted a scene in which Hoagy — as a honky tonk piano player in a Martinique dive — is doing the Harry Akst-Grant Clarke tune when a 19-year-old Lauren Bacall makes her film debut.“My first scene required me to sing ‘Am I Blue,'” Carmichael wrote in his 1965 autobiography Sometimes I Wonder. “‘Am I Nervous' would have been a more appropriate title. I chewed a match to help my jitters…. The match was a good decision, it turned out, because it became a definite part of the character.”With some comic results. One morning during the shooting, Carmichael had a scene with Bogart, who walked onto the set chewing on a match. “My heart sank,” Hoagy wrote. “What can you say to the star of the picture when he's apparently intent on stealing your stuff?”Only the next day did Carmichael learn it had all been a gag. “Bogey let me go on thinking they had actually shot the scene that way.”Meanwhile…Elsewhere in the film, Hoagy is seen playing an accompaniment for the very nervous young Bacall as her character, “Slim,” sings his and Johnny Mercer's song, "How Little We Know,” which they wrote specifically for the movie.A 16-year-old Andy Williams recorded the song as a possible alternative track to dub Bacall's low voice; however, Bacall always maintained that the producers ended up using her singing in the film rather the dub.“I'm not sure what the truth of it was,” Williams later wrote in his own autobiography, “but I'm not going to argue about it with the formidable Ms. Bacall!”Meanwhile, more films awaited Hoagy Carmichael. As he wrote, he was cast in "every picture in which a world-weary character in bad repair sat around and sang or leaned over a piano.… It was usually the part of the hound-dog-faced old musical philosopher noodling on the honky-tonk piano, saying to a tart with a heart of gold: 'He'll be back, honey. He's all man'."Song HistoriesIf you would like to read more about the history of “Am I Blue?” check out this earlier Flood Watch report on the song. And for the backstories on other songs in The Flood's repertoire, peruse the newsletter's Song Stories section. What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2024 50:16

What The Riff?!? makes another scary trip down the Halloween rabbit hole with these theme songs, movie and TV music, and rock songs with a bent towards the macabre.  We hope you enjoy this third edition of "Halloween" from What the Riff?!? Highway to Hell by AC/DC  The opening track to the 1979 album of the same name features Bon Scott on his last album as lead singer of the group before his untimely death.  The name of the song was inspired by the group's gruesome touring schedule.Shout at the Devil by Motley Crue  The Crue's 1983 breakthrough album of the same name would establish them as one of the most successful metal bands of the 80's.  The song was controversial, with many believing that it encouraged devil worship, though the lyrics themselves do not explicitly do so.Disarm by The Smashing Pumpkins  Off their breakout album "Siamese Dream," this song references "the killer in me is the killer in you" is inspired by Billy Corgan's contemplation of his negligent parents and suicide.  The lyrics "cut that little child" caused the song to be banned by the BBC.Demons by Imagine Dragons  This song off Imagine Dragons' major label debut studio album became their second top 10 single.  It is really not about demons in the Halloween sense, but more the tragedies of life like abuse, PTSD, and mental illness.Voodoo by Godsmack  The third single from Godsmack's self-titled debut album was inspired by Wes Craven's film “The Serpent and the Rainbow.”  This song became Dave Bautista's theme song as Leviathan when he was in the WWE.  Mommy's Little Monster by Social Distortion  The title track from Social Distortion's debut album tells a horror tale of a kid becoming a punk rocker.  It is another song about dealing with personal demons rather than the supernatural. Witch Wolf by Styx  Early in their career Styx put out this song to lead off their third album, “The Serpent is Rising.”  James Young takes lead vocal duties on this song that tells about a person accursed by a creature called the witch wolf, and night rider.Dragula by Rob Zombie  The lead single from Rob Zombie's debut album may be his biggest hit.  The audio clip at the beginning of the song is taken from the 1960 horror film “The City of the Dead.”  The name comes from the TV sitcom "The Munsters," where Grandpa Munster has a dragster called "Drag-u-la."The theme to the TV series "Twilight Zone" This menagerie of bizarre tales from the early days of TV still has staying power in our sci-fi culture. Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones  Mick Jagger walks us through a discussion with Old Scratch himself in this well-known classic from the Stones' catalogue.  The idea is a narrative from Satan's point of view as he reviews historical events. That Old Black Magic by Frank Sinatra  Old Blue Eyes gave us this romantic song with a Halloween bent.  It was a jazz classic originally written in 1942 with lyrics penned by Johnny Mercer.  Love is "that old black magic" in this tune.Night of the Vampire by Roky Erickson  From this cult classic album "The Evil One," this song is one of a plethora of horror-oriented tracks on the album.  Erickson spent a significant amount of time in mental institutions. The Kill (Bury Me) by Thirty Seconds to Mars  Jared Leto, front man for the group (and perhaps better known as an actor today), has said this song is about the relationship you have with yourself, and confronting the dark side of who you are.Take Me to Church by Hozier  This haunting hit song compares falling in love with a kind of death, and compares the lover to a kind of religion. This episode kicks off with a look at how Starmer and Sunak did on the recent Question Time. We're not saying it went badly for Sunak but the PM was booed very loudly at the end so...And then Jemma and Marina decide to have a flutter. They bet that the Tories will cheat and lie their way right up to the election and it looks like they're both set to win because the latest scandal to hit the beleaguered party is 'fluttergate'. Wrongdoing has been admitted by AI generated Tory, Craig Williams, and yet Sunak chose to do nothing apart from put on an 'I'm angry face' for days on end. Still, he got there in the end. And then it's off to Plymouth to trawl through what Johnny Mercer has accused his Labour opponent, Fred Thomas, of. Warning - it's not dignified. Irving Berlin, Dorothy Fields, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein. These, along with many others, are the sorts of songwriters we associate with the Great American Songbook, the amorphous canon of important 20th-century pop songs, jazz standards, and show tunes from Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, and movie musicals. But there's another important detail here. The songs we think of as the Songbook are from, more specifically, the 1920s through the 1950s. With some simple arithmetic, you can see that they're, uh, getting on in years — which might (must?) mean that their devotees are, too. The Nose is off this week. In its place this hour, a look at and a listen to — and some concern for the future of — the Great American Songbook. We all saw the story about the weird A.I.-generated Wonka-themed event in Glasgow. But we also think it's a harbinger of other things to come re: the only things that make it endearing at all are the difficult-despite-it-all attempts to work with terrible material—attempts that humans have to make!—when the computer says to do something stupid. We also talk about Johnny Mercer's strange quantum state of admitting to knowledge of but also refusing to disclose information about UK military war crimes in Afghanistan. Also we talk about November's predictions for 2024: King dead; Saudi economic collapse.
